The relationship between trait awe and procrastination: A mediated model with moderation

The current study aims to examine the effect of trait awe on college students’ procrastination with a focus on confirming the mediating role of stress and the moderating role of future time perspective (FTP). Measures of procrastination, trait awe, stress, and future time perspective were completed by 512 Chinese college students. The results indicate that trait awe had a negative effect on procrastination, that stress was a significant mediator between trait awe and procrastination, and that FTP moderated the mediation effect. These findings not only demonstrate the crucial role of awe in alleviating procrastination but also elucidate the underlying mechanisms and relevant populations. Limitations and directions for future research were also discussed.

The influence of humble leadership on employees’ work engagement: the mediating role of leader knowledge-sharing behaviour

Purpose

This paper empirically aims to investigate the mediating role of leader knowledge-sharing behaviour (LKSB) in the relationship between humble leadership (HL) and work engagement (WE).

Design/methodology/approach

The responses of 321 employees in hospitality organisations in Jordan were collected via an online survey. The study data was then analysed using structural equation modelling.

Findings

The study found that leaders showing humble behaviour were able to share knowledge that ultimately improved employees’ work engagement; thus, confirming that leaders sharing knowledge behaviour mediates the relationship between HL and all three dimensions of work engagement.

Originality/value

This study delves into and sheds further light on HL theory by proposing that LKSB serves as a motivational basis for the relationship between HL and employees’ work engagement. By bolstering the mediating mechanism of LKSB, the findings provide new, deeper insights into the influence of HL on all three dimensions of work engagement.

Future Time Perspective in the Work Context: A Systematic Review of Quantitative Studies

A core construct in the lifespan theory of socioemotional selectivity, future time perspective (FTP) refers to individuals’ perceptions of their remaining time in life. Its adaptation to the work context, occupational future time perspective (OFTP), entails workers’ perceptions of remaining time and opportunities in their careers. Over the past decade, several quantitative studies have investigated antecedents and consequences of general FTP and OFTP in the work context (i.e., FTP at work). We systematically review and critically discuss this literature on general FTP (k = 17 studies) and OFTP (k = 16 studies) and highlight implications for future research and practice. Results of our systematic review show that, in addition to its strong negative relationship with age, FTP at work is also associated with other individual (e.g., personality traits) and contextual variables (e.g., job characteristics). Moreover, FTP at work has been shown to mediate and moderate relationships of individual and contextual antecedents with occupational well-being, as well as motivational and behavioral outcomes. As a whole, findings suggest that FTP at work is an important variable in the field of work and aging, and that future research should improve the ways in which FTP at work is measured and results on FTP at work are reported.
