Musculoskeletal Injury in American Football: A Bibliometric Analysis of the Most Cited Articles

Background

Textbook knowledge and clinical dogma are often insufficient for effective evidence-based decision making when treating musculoskeletal injuries in American football players, given the variability in presentation and outcomes across different sports and different levels of competition. Key evidence can be drawn directly from high-quality published articles to make the appropriate decisions and recommendations for each athlete's unique situation.

Purpose

To identify and analyze the 50 most cited articles related to football-related musculoskeletal injury to provide an efficient tool in the arsenal of trainees, researchers, and evidence-based practitioners alike.

Study Design

Cross-sectional study.

Methods

The ISI Web of Science and SCOPUS databases were queried for articles pertaining to musculoskeletal injury in American football. For each of the top 50 most cited articles, bibliometric elements were evaluated: citation count and density, decade of publication, journal, country, multiple publications by the same first author or senior author, article content (topic, injury area), and level of evidence (LOE).

Results

The mean ± SD number of citations was 102.76 ± 37.11; the most cited article, with 227 citations, was "Syndesmotic Ankle Sprains" published in 1991 by Boytim et al. Several authors served as a first or senior author on >1 publication, including J.S. Torg (n = 6), J.P. Bradley (n = 4), and J.W. Powell (n = 4). The American Journal of Sports Medicine published the majority of the 50 most cited articles (n = 31). A total of 29 articles discussed lower extremity injuries, while only 4 discussed upper extremity injuries. The majority of the articles (n = 28) had an LOE of 4, with only 1 article having an LOE of 1. The articles with an LOE of 3 had the highest mean citation number (133.67 ± 55.23; F = 4.02; P = .05).

Conclusion

The results of this study highlight the need for more prospective research surrounding the management of football-related injury. The low overall number of articles on upper extremity injury (n = 4) also highlights an area for further research.

The 50 Most Cited Articles in Knee Medial Collateral Ligament Injury Research

Background:

Medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury is a common orthopaedic knee injury with a plethora of published articles regarding evaluation, treatment, and outcome.

Purpose:

To perform a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of the 50 most cited articles in MCL research.

Study Design:

Cross-sectional study.

Methods:

We performed a keyword search of the Institute for Scientific Information’s Web of Knowledge database for the identification of articles published before September 2021 encompassing the MCL. The conducted search yielded 9534 articles. The results were then filtered using predetermined guidelines and criteria, and the 50 most cited articles were selected for analysis. Extracted data included title, authors, citation count, year of publication, topic, journal, article type, country of origin, and level of evidence.

Results:

The selected 50 articles ranged from 1976 to 2013. The largest proportion was classified as having level 4 evidence (n = 12; 24%). The majority of the articles were published in the decade from 2000 to 2009 (n = 17; 34%), followed by 1990 to 1999 (n = 16; 32%). The mean raw citation score per article was 133 (range, 74-422). The most popular topic discussed was surgical technique and outcome (n = 14; 28%), followed by anatomy and biomechanics (n = 13; 26%).

Conclusion:

This study provides a comprehensive and objective measure of the most cited articles on MCL research. Knowledge of the characteristics of these most influential articles improves the understanding of MCL injury and can guide discussion for future research.

Pediatric Minimally Invasive Surgery-A Bibliometric Study on 30 Years of Research Activity

Background: Pediatric minimally invasive surgery (MIS) is a standard technique worldwide. We aimed to analyze the research activity in this field. Methods: Articles on pediatric MIS (1991−2020) were analyzed from the Web of Science™ for the total number of publications, citations, journals, and impact factors (IF). Of these, the 50 most cited publications were evaluated in detail and classified according to the level of evidence (i.e., study design) and topic (i.e., surgical procedure). Results: In total, 4464 publications and 53,111 citations from 684 journals on pediatric MIS were identified. The 50 most cited papers were published from 32 institutions in the USA/Canada (n = 28), Europe (n = 19), and Asia (n = 3) in 12 journals. Four authors (USA/Europe) contributed to 26% of the 50 most cited papers as first/senior author. Hot topics were laparoscopic pyeloplasty (n = 9), inguinal hernia repair (n = 7), appendectomy, and pyloromyotomy (n = 4 each). The majority of publications were retrospective studies (n = 33) and case reports (n = 6) (IF 5.2 ± 3.2; impact index 16.5 ± 6.4; citations 125 ± 39.4). They were cited as often as articles with high evidence levels (meta-analyses, n = 2; randomized controlled trials, n = 7; prospective studies, n = 2) (IF 12.9 ± 22.5; impact index 14.0 ± 6.5; citations 125 ± 34.7; p > 0.05). Conclusions: Publications on laparoscopic pyeloplasty, inguinal hernia repair, appendectomy, and pyloromyotomy are cited most often in pediatric MIS. However, the relevant number of studies with strong evidence for the advantages of MIS in pediatric surgery is missing.

Background

This study aims to identify the most frequently cited articles published in the Journal of Arthroplasty (JOA) and to analyze the trends in the content and contributors of the literature within the journal.

Methods

The 100 most cited articles published in the JOA were accessed using the Scopus database. The number of citations, year of publication, level of evidence (LOE), article type, country of origin, and contributing institution were each recorded for each article.

Results

The United States (63%) was the most prolific publishing nation. The 1990s (30%) and 2000s (47%) were the most productive decades. The most common article category was clinical outcomes (33%), followed by technical note (16%) and biomechanics (14%). The plurality of the top 100 articles were well-designed case-control or cohort studies of LOE II (46%) followed by LOE V (32%) and LOE I (11%).

Conclusions

Using citation analysis, the most influential articles in the JOA were comprehensively and objectively analyzed. The most popular fields of research involved clinical outcomes (33%) and technical note (16%), both of which increase an article’s likelihood of being highly cited. Knowledge of the most influential articles in the JOA allows for appreciation of current and potential future areas of literature regarding diagnosis, management, and outcome of a patient undergoing arthroplasty.

Top 50 most cited articles in revision total hip arthroplasty research

Background

Bibliometric analysis is a useful tool for measuring the scholarly impact of a topic. To date, there is no such review analyzing the characteristics and trends of publications focused on revision total hip arthroplasty (rTHA). The purpose of this study is to use bibliometric analysis to comprehensively analyze the 50 most cited articles in rTHA research.

Methods

This is a cross-sectional study that used the ISI Web of Knowledge database to identify articles published before September 2021. Articles were sorted in descending order by number of citations and those with a focus of rTHA were identified. Of these, the top 50 most cited articles were carried forward for evaluation.

Results

The 2000s (50%) and the 1990s (32%) had the greatest volume of contribution. 9 of the top 10 most cited articles were published in the 2000s. The highest impact article had 4702 citations. The level of evidence (LOE) published with the greatest frequency was LOE II (40%) followed by LOE III and LOE IV both recording 24%. The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery-American Volume had the greatest productivity (46%) followed by The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery-British Volume (18%). The United States was the country with the highest number of contributions to this list with 56% followed by England (12%), and Sweden and Canada both with 8%.

Conclusion

The most impactful articles focusing on rTHA research were comprehensively and objectively analyzed. The most common article type was clinical outcomes (46%) followed by natural history/epidemiology (24%) and surgical technique (16%). While this topic is highly studied with significant level of evidence to support the studies, there is a lack of influential research regarding imaging and clinical guidelines. This analysis can be used by researchers to develop further discussions and build research questions.

The top 100 most impactful articles on the anterior cruciate ligament: An altmetric analysis of online media

Objectives:

To identify the top 100 most impactful anterior cruciate ligament articles in online media as measured by the Altmetric Attention Score and compare their characteristics to the most-cited anterior cruciate ligament articles in the scientific literature.

Methods:

The Altmetric database was queried to identify all published articles pertaining to the anterior cruciate ligament. The search yielded 9445 articles, which were stratified by highest to lowest Altmetric Attention Score. The top 100 articles were included. Collected data included article type, article topic, journal name, and online mentions in news, blogs, Twitter, Facebook, Wikipedia, and other sources. The geographic origin of each article was also determined based on the institutional affiliation of the first author.

Results:

Altmetric Attention Score of the top 100 anterior cruciate ligament articles ranged from 109 to 2193 (median 172.0, interquartile range 137.5–271.5). Of the 100 articles, 65 were published in three journals: American Journal of Sports Medicine, British Journal of Sports Medicine, and Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy. The most prevalent article type was original research (60%), followed by systematic review/meta-analysis (18%). The most prevalent article topic was rehabilitation and return to play after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (22%), followed by epidemiology/risk factors (16%), injury prevention (14%), and biomechanics of anterior cruciate ligament injuries (14%). Of the top 100 articles, 54% were American, 31% were European, and 15% were published in other countries outside of the United States and Europe.

Conclusion:

This study used Altmetric Attention Score to identify the 100 most engaged anterior cruciate ligament articles in online media. The characteristics of these articles differed substantially from the most-cited anterior cruciate ligament articles in the literature with regard to article type, article topic, geographic origin, and publication journal. These findings suggest that alternative metrics measure distinct components of anterior cruciate ligament article engagement and add an important dimension to understanding the overall impact of published research on the anterior cruciate ligament.

The 50 Top-Cited Articles on the Posterior Cruciate Ligament: A Bibliometric Analysis and Review

Background:

Limited attention has been paid to the natural history, management, and treatment outcomes related to the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL)–deficient knee joint.

Purpose:

To perform a comprehensive bibliometric analysis to evaluate the 50 top-cited articles in PCL research.

Study Design:

Cross-sectional study.

Methods:

We performed a keyword-based search in the Thomson Reuters Web of Science to generate a list of the 50 most cited articles relevant to the PCL. The included articles were analyzed according to journal, country of origin, publication year, total number of citations, citations per year, citation trends, and type of study (clinical vs basic science).

Results:

The 50 top-cited articles were published between 1975 and 2012, and the number of individual article citations ranged between 98 and 410. The listed articles were published in 7 journals, with the American Journal of Sports Medicine contributing to more than half of the articles and citations. The United States contributed the most articles (84%) and citations (n = 4873). There were 32 clinical studies and 18 basic science studies. All clinical studies had level 4 clinical evidence, and topics included the natural history of PCL tears, factors predicting the need for surgical intervention, and long-term outcomes of isolated PCL injuries and combined capsuloligamentous injuries. Most (77.8%) of the top-cited basic science articles consisted of experimental or biomechanical studies on human cadaveric knees.

Conclusion:

The current analysis suggests that PCL research is still evolving and needs high-quality prospective evidence to establish sound recommendations.
