Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to explore potential differences in suprathreshold auditory function among native and nonnative speakers of English as a function of age. METHOD Retrospective analyses were performed on three large data sets containing suprathreshold auditory tests completed by 5,572 participants who were self-identified native and nonnative speakers of English between the ages of 18-65 years, including a binaural tone detection test, a digit identification test, and a sentence recognition test. RESULTS The analyses show a significant interaction between increasing age and participant group on tests involving speech-based stimuli (digit strings, sentences) but not on the binaural tone detection test. For both speech tests, differences in speech recognition emerged between groups during early adulthood, and increasing age had a more negative impact on word recognition for nonnative compared to native participants. Age-related declines in performance were 2.9 times faster for digit strings and 3.3 times faster for sentences for nonnative participants compared to native participants. CONCLUSIONS This set of analyses extends the existing literature by examining interactions between aging and self-identified native English speaker status in several auditory domains in a cohort of adults spanning young adulthood through middle age. The finding that older nonnative English speakers in this age cohort may have greater-than-expected deficits on speech-in-noise perception may have clinical implications on how these individuals should be diagnosed and treated for hearing difficulties.

Abstract
In speech audiometry, the speech-recognition threshold (SRT) is usually established by adjusting the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) until 50% of the words or sentences are repeated correctly. However, these conditions are rarely encountered in everyday situations. Therefore, for a group of 15 young participants with normal hearing and a group of 12 older participants with hearing impairment, speech-recognition scores were determined at SRT and at four higher SNRs using several stationary and fluctuating maskers. Participants' verbal responses were recorded, and participants were asked to self-report their listening effort on a categorical scale (self-reported listening effort, SR-LE). The responses were analyzed using an Automatic Speech Recognizer (ASR) and compared to the results of a human examiner. An intraclass correlation coefficient of r = .993 for the agreement between their corresponding speech-recognition scores was observed. As expected, speech-recognition scores increased with increasing SNR and decreased with increasing SR-LE. However, differences between speech-recognition scores for fluctuating and stationary maskers were observed as a function of SNR, but not as a function of SR-LE. The verbal response time (VRT) and the response speech rate (RSR) of the listeners' responses were measured using an ASR. The participants with hearing impairment showed significantly lower RSRs and higher VRTs compared to the participants with normal hearing. These differences may be attributed to differences in age, hearing, or both. With increasing SR-LE, VRT increased and RSR decreased. The results show the possibility of deriving a behavioral measure, VRT, measured directly from participants' verbal responses during speech audiometry, as a proxy for SR-LE.

Reverberation can have a strong detrimental effect on speech intelligibility in noise. Two main monaural effects were studied here: the temporal smearing of the target speech, which makes the speech less understandable, and the temporal smearing of the noise, which reduces the opportunity for listening in the masker dips. These phenomena have been shown to affect normal-hearing (NH) listeners. The aim of this study was to understand whether hearing-impaired (HI) listeners are more affected by reverberation, and if so to identify which of these two effects is responsible. They were investigated separately and in combination, by applying reverberation either on the target speech, on the noise masker, or on both sources. Binaural effects were not investigated here. Intelligibility scores in the presence of stationary and modulated noise were systematically compared for both NH and HI listeners in these situations. At the optimal signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) (that is to say, the SNRs with the least amount of floor and ceiling effects), the temporal smearing of both the speech and the noise had a similar effect for the HI and NH listeners, so that reverberation was not more detrimental for the HI listeners. There was only a very limited dip listening benefit at this SNR for either group. Some differences across group appeared at the SNR maximizing dip listening, but they could not be directly related to an effect of reverberation, and were rather due to floor effects or to the reduced ability of the HI listeners to benefit from dip listening, even in the absence of reverberation.

Abstract
Although the behavioral pure-tone threshold audiogram is considered the gold standard for quantifying hearing loss, assessment of speech understanding, especially in noise, is more relevant to quality of life but is only partly related to the audiogram. Metrics of speech understanding in noise are therefore an attractive target for assessing hearing over time. However, speech-in-noise assessments have more potential sources of variability than pure-tone threshold measures, making it a challenge to obtain results reliable enough to detect small changes in performance. This review examines the benefits and limitations of speech-understanding metrics and their application to longitudinal hearing assessment, and identifies potential sources of variability, including learning effects, differences in item difficulty, and between- and within-individual variations in effort and motivation. We conclude by recommending the integration of non-speech auditory tests, which provide information about aspects of auditory health that have reduced variability and fewer central influences than speech tests, in parallel with the traditional audiogram and speech-based assessments.

Abstract
A multi-talker paradigm is introduced that uses different attentional processes to adjust speech-recognition scores with the goal of conducting measurements at high signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). The basic idea is to simulate a group conversation with three talkers. Talkers alternately speak sentences of the German matrix test OLSA. Each time a sentence begins with the name “Kerstin” (call sign), the participant is addressed and instructed to repeat the last words of all sentences from that talker, until another talker begins a sentence with “Kerstin”. The alternation of the talkers is implemented with an adjustable overlap time that causes an overlap between the call sign “Kerstin” and the target words to be repeated. Thus, the two tasks of detecting “Kerstin” and repeating target words are to be done at the same time. The paradigm was tested with 22 young normal-hearing participants (YNH) for three overlap times (0.6 s, 0.8 s, 1.0 s). Results for these overlap times show significant differences, with median target word recognition scores of 88%, 82%, and 77%, respectively (including call-sign and dual-task effects). A comparison of the dual task with the corresponding single tasks suggests that the observed effects reflect an increased cognitive load.

Abstract
This study aimed at the evaluation of a simplified Italian matrix test (SiIMax) for speech-recognition measurements in noise for adults and children. Speech-recognition measurements with adults and children were conducted to examine the training effect and to establish reference speech-recognition thresholds of 50% (SRT50) and 80% (SRT80) correct responses. Test-list equivalency was evaluated only with adults. Twenty adults and 96 children—aged between 5 and 10 years—participated. Evaluation measurements with the adults confirmed the equivalence of the test lists, with a mean SRT50 of −8.0 dB and a standard deviation of 0.2 dB across the test lists. The test-specific slope (the average of the list-specific slopes) was 11.3%/dB, with a standard deviation of 0.6%/dB. For both adults and children, only one test list of 14 phrases needs to be presented to account for the training effect. For the adults, adaptive measurements of the SRT50 and SRT80 showed mean values of −7.0 ± 0.6 and −4.5 ± 1.1 dB, respectively. For children, a slight influence of age on the SRT was observed. The mean SRT50s were −5.6 ± 1.2, −5.8 ± 1.2 and −6.6 ± 1.3 dB for the children aged 5–6, 7–8 and 9–10 years, respectively. The corresponding SRT80s were −1.5 ± 2.7, −3.0 ± 1.7 and −3.7 ± 1.4 dB. High test–retest reliabilities of 1.0 and 1.1 dB for the SRT80 were obtained for the adults and children, respectively. This makes the test suitable for accurate and reliable speech-recognition measurements.

Abstract
Challenging listening situations (e.g., when speech is rapid or noisy) result in substantial individual differences in speech perception. We propose that rapid auditory perceptual learning is one of the factors contributing to those individual differences. To explore this proposal, we assessed rapid perceptual learning of time-compressed speech in young adults with normal hearing and in older adults with age-related hearing loss. We also assessed the contribution of this learning as well as that of hearing and cognition (vocabulary, working memory, and selective attention) to the recognition of natural-fast speech (NFS; both groups) and speech in noise (younger adults). In young adults, rapid learning and vocabulary were significant predictors of NFS and speech in noise recognition. In older adults, hearing thresholds, vocabulary, and rapid learning were significant predictors of NFS recognition. In both groups, models that included learning fitted the speech data better than models that did not include learning. Therefore, under adverse conditions, rapid learning may be one of the skills listeners could employ to support speech recognition.

Abstract
Objective: A simplified version of the Finnish matrix sentence test (FMST) was developed to improve the reliability of hearing diagnostic for children and for patients with limited working memory capacity and/or vocabulary.Design: Study 1 evaluated the word matrix of the Finnish simplified matrix sentence test (FINSIMAT) to rule out systematic differences between the new FINSIMAT test lists, and to provide reference values for normal-hearing (NH) young adults (YA). In Study 2, the FINSIMAT and the FMST were evaluated in elderly listeners with mild-to-moderate hearing impairment (HI).Study sample: Twenty NH YAs participated in Study 1, and 16 elderly HI adults participated in Study 2.Results: For NH YAs, the reference speech reception threshold (SRT50) estimate and the slope for the FINSIMAT were -11.2 ± 1.0 dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and 19.4 ± 1.9%/dB SNR. For the elderly HI listeners, the mean SRT50 estimates for the FINSIMAT and FMST were -4.1 and -3.6 dB SNR, respectively. The correlation between the FMST and FINSIMAT results was strong (r2 = 0.78, p < 0.001).Conclusion: The FINSIMAT showed comparable characteristics to the FMST and proved feasible for measurements in elderly HI listeners.

Abstract
PURPOSE Many bilaterally deaf adults are only able to receive one cochlear implant (CI), resulting in suboptimal listening performance, especially in challenging listening environments. Adding a contralateral routing of signal (CROS) device to a unilateral CI is one possibility to alleviate these challenges. This study examined the benefit of such a CROS device. METHODS Thirteen adult subjects with at least 6 months of CI use, and no or limited benefit of a hearing instrument in the contralateral ear were included in the study. The perceived benefit of a CROS device in everyday listening environments was evaluated up to 1 year after initial fitting using several questionnaires. Speech intelligibility performance was determined using the French matrix sentence test in quiet and in two speech-in-noise setups and was followed for 3 months after CROS fitting. RESULTS Subjects indicated high satisfaction with the practical usability of the CROS device and long-term device retention was high. Perceived benefits in everyday listening environments were reported. Formal speech intelligibility tests revealed statistically significant median improvements of 6.93 dB SPL (Wilcoxon Z = 2.380, p = 0.017) in quiet and up to 8.00 dB SNR (Wilcoxon Z = 2.366, p = 0.018) in noise. These benefits were accessible immediately without a need for prolonged acclimatization. CONCLUSIONS Subjective satisfaction and device retention as well as speech intelligibility benefits in quiet and in noise prove the CROS device to be a valuable addition to a unilateral CI in cases of bilateral deafness where bilateral implantation is not an option.

Abstract
An adaptive procedure for controlling the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) when rating the subjectively perceived listening effort (Adaptive Categorical Listening Effort Scaling) is described. For this, the listening effort is rated on a categorical scale with 14 steps after the presentation of three sentences in a background masker. In a first phase of the procedure, the individual SNR range for ratings from "no effort" to "extreme effort" is estimated. In the following phases, stimuli with randomly selected SNRs within this range are presented. One or two linear regression lines are fitted to the data describing subjective listening effort as a function of SNR. The results of the adaptive procedure are independent of the initial SNR. Although a static procedure using fixed, predefined SNRs produced similar results, the adaptive procedure avoided lengthy pretests for suitable SNRs and limited possible bias in the rating procedures. The adaptive procedure resolves individual differences, as well as differences between maskers. Inter-individual standard deviations are about three times as large as intra-individual standard deviations and the intra-class correlation coefficient for test-retest reliability is, on average, 0.9.
