Abstract
BACKGROUND The EORTC Quality of Life Group has developed a questionnaire to evaluate cancer patients' perception of their communication with healthcare professionals (HCPs): the EORTC QLQ-COMU26. In this study we test the validity and reliability of this novel measure in an international and culturally diverse sample of cancer patients. METHODS Cancer patients completed the following EORTC questionnaires at two time points (before and during treatment): the QLQ-COMU26 (including a debriefing questionnaire), the QLQ-C30, and specific IN-PATSAT32 scales. These data were used to assess: the cross-cultural applicability, acceptability, scale structure, reliability, convergent/divergent validity, known-groups validity, and responsiveness to change of the QLQ-COMU26. RESULTS Data were collected from 498 patients with various cancer diagnoses in 10 European countries, Japan, Jordan and India (overall 5 cultural regions). At most, only 3% of patients identified an item as confusing and 0.6% as upsetting, which indicates that the questionnaire was clear and did not trigger negative emotional responses. Confirmatory factor analysis and multi-trait scaling confirmed the hypothesised QLQ-COMU26 scale structure comprising six multi-item scales and four single items (RMSEA = 0.025). Reliability was good for all scales (internal consistency > 0.70; test-retest reliability > 0.85). Convergent validity was supported by correlations of ≥ 0.50 with related scales of the IN-PATSAT32 and correlations < 0.30 with unrelated QLQ-C30 scales. Known-groups validity was shown according to sex, education, levels of anxiety and depression, satisfaction with communication, disease stage and treatment intention, professional evaluated, and having a companion during the visit. The QLQ-COMU26 captured changes over time in groups that were defined based on changes in the item of satisfaction with communication. CONCLUSION The EORTC QLQ-COMU26 is a reliable and valid measure of patients' perceptions of their communication with HCPs. The EORTC QLQ-COMU26 can be used in daily clinical practice and research and in various cancer patient groups from different cultures. This questionnaire can help to improve communication between patients and healthcare professionals.

Abstract
This study aims to (1) characterize healthcare professionals' (HCPs') experiences related to the prevention and management of pressure injuries (PIs) and (2) explore the educational needs of individuals with a past or current history of PIs and their caregivers from the perspective of HCPs. This is a qualitative descriptive study. HCPs (n = 18) were interviewed using a semi-structured interview guide. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim and coded using NVivo. Three overarching themes encompassing various dimensions were identified: (1) Facilitators related to PI prevention and management, (2) Challenges related to PI prevention and management and (3) Recommendations for improving patient and caregiver PI education. HCPs identified a greater number of challenges than facilitators related to PI care. This study emphasizes the importance of a patient-centred and interprofessional approach to patient education for PI prevention and management. Meaningful interventions focused on the patient may improve health literacy and empower patients and caregivers in PI care. Investing in preventive measures and raising awareness are crucial to reducing PI incidence. The findings have implications for HCPs and researchers seeking to enhance patient care and promote effective PI prevention strategies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Evidence suggests that damage to the frontal lobes can be associated with changes in cognitive and behavioral functioning and reduced awareness that such changes have occurred. In the current study, the Cognitive Awareness Model was used as a theoretical framework to explore knowledge of the self in people with acquired frontal lesions. METHODS Fifteen individuals with focal frontal lobe lesions (FFL) and their nominated informants were compared with fifteen healthy matched control-informant dyads on questionnaire measures designed to assess awareness of difficulties. Questionnaires were adapted to ensure all enabled pre- and post-injury perspectives to be gained from both patient and informant, and to allow novel exploration of awareness of deficits from a third person perspective. RESULTS Individuals with frontal lobe lesions showed adequate awareness of their post-surgery changes, which was substantiated by their informant report. Compared to the control group, the patient group was found to acknowledge more difficulties in current functioning. Perspective-taking ability was limited with both patients and controls being comparatively unreliable in assessing how they were perceived by others. CONCLUSION These results demonstrate that FLL patients are engaging in more atypical behaviors compared to healthy controls, but suggest that they are aware of and acknowledge these difficulties. The importance of obtaining multiple viewpoints when examining an individual's level of awareness and the clinical implications of this are discussed.

Abstract
Depression is common within the first year of relocation to residential care/assisted living (RC/AL). Yet, few studies investigate the relationship between depression and relocation factors that might help identify at-risk residents, such as previous location. This study analyzed cross-sectional resident data (n = 2651) from the National Survey of Residential Care Facilities to test: (1) group differences between residents relocating from acute/post-acute facilities (e.g., hospital, rehabilitation facility) and community-based residences, and (2) the relationship between previous location and depression within the first year of relocation. The 921 (35%) residents relocating directly from acute/post-acute facilities were more likely to have depression (p < .001) and poorer outcomes on select health and psychosocial variables. After controlling for covariates, relocating directly from an acute/post-acute facility significantly related to depression (OR = 1.22). Findings highlight opportunities to improve routine screening and transitional care for this subpopulation of RC/AL residents at heightened risk for depression.

Abstract
PURPOSE Professional interpreters can improve healthcare quality and outcomes when there is language discordance between patients and health care providers. Multidisciplinary rehabilitation relies on nuanced communication; however, the use of interpreters in rehabilitation is underexplored. This study aimed to examine patterns of health care interpreter use in an inpatient rehabilitation setting. METHODS A retrospective cohort study was conducted including patients admitted for subacute rehabilitation during 2019-2020 identified as having limited English proficiency. Patterns of interpreter use (professional and "ad hoc") and rehabilitation outcomes were evaluated via medical record review. RESULTS Eighty-five participants were included. During inpatient rehabilitation (median 17 [12-28] days), most clinical interactions (95%) occurred without an interpreter present. Patterns of interpreter use were variable; with greater use of ad hoc versus professional interpreters (received by 60% versus 49% of the cohort, respectively). Those who interacted with a professional interpreter had a longer length-of-stay, larger Functional Independence Measure (FIM) gain, and lower rate of hospital readmission six months post-discharge. The number of professional interpreter sessions correlated positively with FIM gain. CONCLUSIONS Access to professional interpreters in inpatient rehabilitation was variable, with some patients having no or minimal access. These findings provide preliminary evidence that professional interpreter use may be associated with clinical rehabilitation outcomes. Implications for rehabilitationProfessional health care interpreters can be used to overcome language barriers in rehabilitation.In an inpatient rehabilitation setting, professional interpreters appeared to be underutilized, with many patients having no or minimal access to interpreters.Use of ad hoc, untrained interpreters and informal communication strategies was common during rehabilitation.Use of professional interpreters appeared to be associated with favorable rehabilitation outcomes.

Abstract
Aims To acquire an in‐depth understanding of how older individuals diagnosed with acquired brain injury (ABI) experience their well‐being and care when undergoing physical rehabilitation. Design Systematic literature review. Data sources The electronic databases of PubMed, CINAHL, APA PsycInfo, ASSIA and SCOPUS were searched from 2005 to 2020. Extensive reference checking was also conducted. Review methods A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines, including predominantly qualitative studies. Studies’ quality was appraised using the critical apraisal skills programme (CASP) tool. Results Seventeen studies met the inclusion criteria. Following methods of thematic synthesis, four overarching interpretive themes were identified: (a) Rehabilitation processes and their impact on older individuals’ well‐being; (b) Identity and embodiment concerns of older individuals during rehabilitation; (c) Institutional factors affecting older individuals’ care and well‐being experiences; and (d) Older individuals’ participation in creative activities as part of rehabilitation. Conclusion Organizational and structural care deficiencies as well as health disparities can adversely impact older individuals’ autonomous decision‐making and goal‐setting potentials. The discrepancy between older individuals’ expectations and the reality of returning home along with the illusionary wish to return to a perceived normality, can further negatively affect older individuals’ sense of well‐being. Constructive communication, emotional support, family involvement in rehabilitation and creating a stimulating, enriching social environment can humanize and facilitate older individuals’ adjustment to their new reality following ABI. Impact There is a lack of qualitative research on older individuals’ ABI rehabilitation experiences, especially traumatic brain injury incidents. Further study should consider patients’ concerns over their involvement in decision‐making and goal setting about their care. Overall, this review reveals the need to examine further the significance of humanizing care and the factors that affect older individuals’ sense of well‐being.

Abstract
Background Socially assistive robots (SARs) have been proposed as a tool to help individuals who have had a stroke to perform their exercise during their rehabilitation process. Yet, to date, there are no data on the motivating benefit of SARs in a long-term interaction with post-stroke patients. Methods Here, we describe a robot-based gamified exercise platform, which we developed for long-term post-stroke rehabilitation. The platform uses the humanoid robot Pepper, and also has a computer-based configuration (with no robot). It includes seven gamified sets of exercises, which are based on functional tasks from the everyday life of the patients. The platform gives the patients instructions, as well as feedback on their performance, and can track their performance over time. We performed a long-term patient-usability study, where 24 post-stroke patients were randomly allocated to exercise with this platform—either with the robot or the computer configuration—over a 5–7 week period, 3 times per week, for a total of 306 sessions. Results The participants in both groups reported that this rehabilitation platform addressed their arm rehabilitation needs, and they expressed their desire to continue training with it even after the study ended. We found a trend for higher acceptance of the system by the participants in the robot group on all parameters; however, this difference was not significant. We found that system failures did not affect the long-term trust that users felt towards the system. Conclusions We demonstrated the usability of using this platform for a long-term rehabilitation with post-stroke patients in a clinical setting. We found high levels of acceptance of both platform configurations by patients following this interaction, with higher ratings given to the SAR configuration. We show that it is not the mere use of technology that increases the motivation of the person to practice, but rather it is the appreciation of the technology’s effectiveness and its perceived contribution to the rehabilitation process. In addition, we provide a list of guidelines that can be used when designing and implementing other technological tools for rehabilitation. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To develop a cross-professional model framing the concept and practice of Person-Centered Rehabilitation (PCR) in adult populations, based on a scoping review and thematic analysis of the literature. DATA SOURCES Key databases (PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL), snowballing searches, and experts' consultation were the data sources for English-language empirical or conceptual papers, published from January 2007 to February 2020. STUDY SELECTION Two independent reviewers selected adult-based papers addressing at least one of the six categories of PCR-related content, a priori specified in the published review protocol. From 6527 unique references, 147 were finally included in the analysis. Of those, 26 were exclusively conceptual papers. DATA EXTRACTION Two independent reviewers extracted textual data on what PCR entails conceptually or as a practice. No quality appraisals were performed as is typical in scoping reviews. DATA SYNTHESIS A thematic analysis produced thematic categories that were combined into an emergent model (the PCR Model), which was reviewed by five external experts. PCR was framed as a way of thinking about and providing rehabilitation services "with" the person. PCR is embedded in rehabilitation structures and practice across three levels: 1) the person-professional dyad, 2) the micro-system level (typically an interprofessional team, involving significant others) and 3) a macro-system level (organization within which rehabilitation is delivered). Thematic categories are articulated within each level, detailing both the conceptual and practice attributes of PCR. CONCLUSION The PCR model can inform both clinical and service organization practices. The PCR Model may benefit from further developments including obtaining wider stakeholders' input, determining relevance in different cultural and linguistic groups, and further operationalization and testing in implementation projects.

Abstract
Introduction Although person-centredness is a key principle of integrated care, successfully embedding and improving person-centred care for older people remains a challenge. In the context of a cross-European project on integrated care for older people living at home, the objective of this paper is to provide insight at an overarching level, into activities aimed at improving person-centredness within the participating integrated care sites. The paper describes experiences with these activities from the service providers' and service users' perspectives. Methods A multiple embedded case study design was conducted that included thirteen integrated care sites for older people living at home. Results Service providers were positive about the activities that aimed to promote person-centred care and thought that most activities (e.g. comprehensive needs assessment) positively influenced person-centredness. Experiences of service users were mixed. For some activities (e.g. enablement services), discrepancies were identified between the views of service providers and those of service users. Discussion and conclusion Evaluating activities aimed at promoting person-centredness from both the service providers' and service users' perspectives showed that not all efforts were successful or had the intended consequences for older people. Involvement of older people in designing improvement activities could ensure that care and support reflect their needs and preferences, and build positive experiences of care and support.

Abstract
Purpose: To describe and analyse social interactions among the users, partners and stakeholders involved in developing a rehabilitation park to determine a future approach to community-based rehabilitation.Materials and methods: The design was qualitative using the methodology interpretive description and symbolic interactionism as the theoretical framework. Data was generated through a two-year ethnographic fieldwork throughout the development of the SPARK (Sound Park Activities Rehabilitation and Climate) rehabilitation park. The participants were users, partners, and stakeholders of the park and data consisted of participant observations comprising observations, informal conversations, and field notes.Results: Three themes formed an understanding of the significance of involvement; A shared vision reflected the participants' joint overall idea for the rehabilitation park containing possibilities for health promotions for everyone. Perceived solidarity represented an experience of a project where everyone's opinion counted whilst Profound Acknowledgement signified a state of a deeper experience of being valued and heard.Conclusions: The findings suggest consistent and continuous involvement of users, partners, and stakeholders, creating possibilities for co-creation in rehabilitation in new settings. The development of rehabilitation parks like the SPARK park in a shared public arena may benefit people with disability, and everyone and further help reduce stigma around disability.Implications for RehabilitationThe rehabilitation definition forms the base for co-creation of rehabilitation initiatives among people in need of rehabilitation as such and professionals with different approaches and professions.Conducting rehabilitation practice in a shared outdoor arena may provide professional development and expansion towards interdisciplinary approaches across diagnoses and professions.Outdoor rehabilitation may (despite different target groups) function as a facilitator for professional and chance meetings in the park and thereby create a community for meeting across professional disciplines, founding, and enabling a practice that allows to reflect on and learn from different approaches within rehabilitation.Community-based rehabilitation in a public shared arena may generate possibilities for reducing stigma towards people with disability.

Abstract
There is limited evidence of the extent to which Healthcare professionals implement patient-centered care (PCC) and of the factors influencing their PCC practices in acute care organizations. This study aimed to (1) examine the practices reported by health professionals (physicians, nurses, social workers, other healthcare providers) in relation to three PCC components (holistic, collaborative, and responsive care), and (2) explore the association of professionals' characteristics (gender, work experience) and a contextual factor (caseload), with the professionals' PCC practices. Data were obtained from a large scale cross-sectional study, conducted in 18 hospitals in Ontario, Canada. Consenting professionals (n = 382) completed a self-report instrument assessing the three PCC components and responded to standard questions inquiring about their characteristics and workload. Small differences were found in the PCC practices across professional groups: (1) physicians reported higher levels of enacting the holistic care component; (2) physicians, other healthcare providers, and social workers reported implementing higher levels of the collaborative care component; and (3) physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers reported higher levels of providing responsive care. Caseload influenced holistic care practices. Interprofessional education and training strategies are needed to clarify and address professional differences in valuing and practicing PCC components. Clinical guidelines can be revised to enable professionals to engage patients in care-related decisions, customize patient care, and promote interprofessional collaboration in planning and implementing PCC. Additional research is warranted to determine the influence of professional, patient, and other contextual factors on professionals' PCC practices in acute care hospitals.
