A Mind-Body Skills Course Among Nursing and Medical Students: A Pathway for an Improved Perception of Self and the Surrounding World

Differential effects of guided imagery and progressive muscle relaxation on physical and emotional symptoms in nursing students taking initial clinical training: A randomized clinical trial

Background

The initial clinical training has been reported by nursing students as the most challenging component of the nursing programs. Although progressive muscle relaxation and guided imagery have been reported to improve emotional and physical health, the use of such approaches among nursing students rarely exist.

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to examine the deferential effects of progressive muscle relaxation [PMR] and guided imagery [GI] on physical and emotional symptoms in nursing students taking their initial clinical training.

Methods

Using a three-group, randomized, single blinded study conducted in a large Jordanian university, 156 nursing students were randomly allocated into one of three study groups (PMR group, GI group, and control group). The physical symptoms and emotional symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress were assessed at baseline and end of the intervention. The study protocol was registered in ClinicalTrail.gov, identifier: xxxxxx.

Results

Using one-way MANOVA and post-hoc comparisons, the results showed that PMR and GI significantly reduced more physical symptoms than control condition although PMR was more effective than GI in this regard. GI significantly decreased more emotional symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and stress than PMR and control condition. PMR decreased anxiety, depression, and stress but the results were not statistically significant.

Conclusion

The findings of this study support the ABC relaxation theory claiming that PMR im-proves better physical symptoms while GI improves better emotional symptoms. However, further studies using students from multiple settings are needed.

Mindfulness-Based Interventions for Undergraduate Nursing Students in a University Setting: A Narrative Review

(1) Introduction: Undergraduate (UG) nursing students are vulnerable to stress throughout their education, known to result in burnout, with high attrition rates of up to 33%. There is a growing body of evidence to suggest that mindfulness-based interventions are effective for the management of anxiety, depression and wellbeing, thereby reducing stress in healthcare provider populations. The aim of this narrative review was to synthesize and provide a critical overview of the current evidence in relation to mindfulness-based interventions for UG nursing students in a university setting. (2) Methods: A review of the literature was conducted in March 2020 and updated in May 2021, utilising the databases CINAHL, Medline and PsycINFO. (3) Results: Fifteen studies were included in the review, with three common themes identified: (i) the positive impact of mindfulness on holistic wellbeing, (ii) mindfulness-based techniques as a positive coping mechanism within academic and clinical practice, and (iii) approaches to the delivery of mindfulness-based interventions. (4) Conclusions: Mindfulness-based interventions are effective strategies for the management of stress, development of self-awareness and enhanced academic and clinical performance in undergraduate nursing students. No ideal approach to delivery or duration of these interventions was evident from the literature. Best practice in relation to delivery of mindfulness-based interventions for nursing students is recommended for future studies.

Patients' experiences of the caring encounter in health promotion practice: a qualitative study in Swedish primary health care

BACKGROUND

Previous studies have reported that organizational structures and cultures in primary health care are obstacles to district nurses doing successful work in health promotion practice (HPP). Because organizational structures are not easily changed, Jean Watson's Attending Nurse Caring Model (ANCM) was introduced and piloted at a primary health care center in Sweden, aiming to transform HPP so as to empower district nurses and increase their work satisfaction.

AIM

To investigate patients' experiences of the caring encounter in HPP after introduction of the ANCM in Swedish primary health care, the aim being to explore the essential components of the caring encounter between patients and district nurses.

METHODS

A descriptive and qualitative research design was used. Data collection was performed using individual face-to-face interviews with twelve patients at risk for developing CVD. Data analysis consisted of both deductive content analysis, using a categorization matrix based on the ANCM and, subsequently, inductive latent content analysis.

RESULTS

The findings were abstracted into three themes: 1.'Feeling the deepest essence of being cared for': to be respected and being put at the center of the encounter; 2. 'Feeling acceptance and worth': being treated with openness and permissive attitudes, 3. 'Being in a supportive atmosphere that promotes hope': to feel trust and being trusted in the encounter, and being empowered by hope. The unifying main theme of the caring encounter was abstracted as 'Experiencing human dignity'.

CONCLUSION

The present study revealed that the essence of the caring encounter between patients and district nurses in HPP is to be unconditionally accepted in an environment that inspires hope and encouragement. The ANCM seems to be a promising model to use for strengthening the caring encounter and supporting CVD patients in making healthy lifestyle choices. However, further studies of qualitative and quantitative designs are needed to investigate what the ANCM can contribute to HPP in Swedish primary health care.

Perception on the mind-nurse program among nursing students: A descriptive qualitative study

BACKGROUND

Nursing undergraduates are susceptible to stress from academic and clinical matters. We developed the MIND-NURSE program for nursing students.

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to explore students' perceptions towards the program.

METHODS

This was a descriptive qualitative study. A convenience sampling was used to recruit nursing undergraduates from a university in Singapore. Participants attended the eight-week MIND-NURSE program. Each session comprised two components: Education and mindfulness practice. Three focus group interviews were conducted after completion of the program, using a semi-structured interview guide. Thematic analysis was used to identify emerging themes and subthemes.

RESULTS

Twenty students participated in the study. Overall, they reacted positively to the MIND-NURSE program, albeit some concerns raised regarding the mindfulness practice. Six themes were derived from the data including: a) enhanced awareness of the present moment; b) increased serenity through mindfulness practice; c) triad of thoughts, emotion and behaviors; d) working towards interpersonal mindfulness; e) adapting mindfulness into nursing practice; and f) overcoming the challenges for mindfulness practice.

CONCLUSIONS

Mindfulness benefited the students in personal and professional ways. More research should be conducted to implement the program on nursing students in other universities.
