Abstract
Health information technology (HIT) use among foreign-born adults of Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) descent living in America is an understudied population. They are currently categorized as "White" in the United States (US) on federal forms. The purpose was to uncover the prevalence of HIT use among MENA immigrants compared to US- and foreign-born White adults before and after adjusting for other factors. The 2011-2018 National Health Interview Survey data (n = 161,613; ages 18 + years) was analyzed. HIT uses evaluated were searching for health information, filling prescriptions, scheduling appointments, and communicating with healthcare providers via email (last 12 months). Crude and multivariable logistic regression models were used to estimate the odds of each HIT use, any HIT use, and all HIT uses before and after adjustment. The most common HIT use was looking up health information, with 46.4% of foreign-born adults of MENA, 47.8% of foreign-born White, and 51.2% of US-born White adults reporting its use (p = .0079). Foreign-born adults of MENA descent had lower odds (OR = 0.64; 95%CI = 0.56-0.74) of reporting any HIT use, but no difference in reporting all HIT uses compared to US-born White adults in adjusted models. This is the first study to explore HIT use among Americans of MENA descent. Patterns of HIT use among adults of MENA descent differ from White adults. Results contribute to growing body of literature showing the health of Americans of MENA descent differs from White Americans. A separate racial/ethnic identifier is needed to better capture HIT uses among populations of MENA descent.

Abstract
PURPOSE We examined the role of patient-provider communication (PPC) during in-person visits and via electronic communication and social media use on colorectal cancer (CRC) screening among Asian Americans (AAs) and Non-Hispanic Whites (NHWs) aged 50 and older. METHODS Health Information National Trends Survey 2017-2020 data were analyzed. RESULTS AAs tended to evaluate the quality of PPC during their in-person visits to a health care provider lower than NHWs. AAs' CRC screening rate was lower than the rate of NHWs (78.8% vs. 84.4%). After adjusting for sociodemographics, healthcare access, and health status, the quality of PPC was the only significant predictor associated with a lower probability of CRC screening among AAs (Adjusted OR 0.74; 95% CI 0.56, 0.96); while the Internet to communicate with a health care provider was the only significant predictor of CRC screening among NHWs (Adjusted OR 1.76; CI 1.11, 2.79). AAs were more likely to use YouTube to watch a health-related video than NHWs (43.5% vs, 24%). However, social media use was not associated with CRC screening in both AAs and NHWs. CONCLUSION Use of electronic communication technology may contribute to improve health information literacy and reduce the disparity. On-line communication may empower the culturally and linguistically diverse AAs by improving their confidence in communication with health care providers. Thus, communication technologies need to be strategically utilized and tailored to better meet the communication needs of racial/ethnic minorities. Online communication technologies may reduce the disparities in PPC related to cancer screening and cancer burden experienced by AAs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The present narrative review aims to discuss cognitive-emotional-behavioral symptoms in adults with brain tumors at the time of diagnosis. METHODS The PubMed database was searched considering glioma, pituitary adenoma, and meningioma in adulthood as pathologies, together with cognitive, neuropsychological, or behavioral aspects. RESULTS Although a significant number of studies describe cognitive impairment after surgery or treatment in adults with brain tumors, only few focus on cognitive-emotional-behavioral symptoms at diagnosis. Furthermore, the importance of an effective communication and its impact on patients' quality of life and compliance with treatment are seldom discussed. CONCLUSIONS Adults with brain tumors have needs in terms of cognitive-emotional-behavioral features that are detectable at the time of diagnosis; more research is needed to identify effective communication protocols in order to allow a higher perceived quality of life in these patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Patient-centered communication (PCC) is a key indicator of healthcare quality and is critical to patient-centered care. The purpose of this study is to examine the trends in PCC over the past decade and determine if differences in PCC by subpopulation remain METHODS: We used nationally representative survey data from the Health Information National Trends Study (HINTS) to examine PCC. We conducted trend and multivariate regression analyses to understand the changes of PCC scores and differences in PCC by key sociodemographic groups. RESULTS PCC reported among adults minimally increased with the largest increases in participants involved in making decisions regarding their healthcare. Participants who were non-Hispanic Black, older, had less than a high school education, or rural residents reported more positive perceptions of PCC CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate improvements to PCC over time. These findings also indicate that differences in patients' perceptions of PCC continue to persist and it's possible that personal expectations may influence a person's perception of the quality of PCC experienced PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: This study highlights the continued need for provider education in patient emotional support and providing patients with the skills and resources to engage in high quality PCC.

Abstract
Using real-world data, this retrospective cross-sectional study aimed to analyze the association between patient–physician communication and self-reported mental health from cancer patients using publicly available 2019 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) household component data. Four adjusted logistic regression models were conducted to analyze the association between patient–physician communication and self-perceived mental health among United States adult cancer patients, with each model assessing different aspects of patient–physician communication: being respected (respect), being listened to (listen), spending enough time (time), and being explained (explain). The main finding from this study was that only the time model showed a statistical significance, where patients who reported that their physician always spent enough time perceived their mental health as good. Other covariates that showed statistical significance with self-perceived mental health in cancer patients included age, income level, physical limitation, and limitation from pain. In conclusion, there were generally no statistically significant associations between patient–physician communication and mental health among cancer patients.

Abstract
Black women have a slightly lower breast cancer incidence rate than White women, but breast cancer mortality is approximately 40% higher among Black women than among White women. Early detection by mammography may improve survival outcomes. Outlets providing information on cancer and cancer screening often present data, including mammography recommendations, that are unreliable, accessible, and/or inconsistent. We examined associations between sources of cancer information and mammography behavior among Black church-going women. A logistic regression model was used to examine associations between self-reported preferred source of cancer information (provider, cancer organization, social network, internet, or other media (e.g., books, magazines)) and self-reported most recent source of cancer information (same categories as preferred sources), respectively, and having received a mammogram within the prior 12 months. Participants were 832 Black women over 40 years old, recruited from three churches in Houston, Texas. Data were collected in 2012. Overall, 55.41% of participants indicated their preferred source of cancer information was a provider, 21.88% the internet, 11.54% other media, 10.22% a cancer organization, and 0.96% their social network. In contrast, 17.88% of participants indicated their most recent source of cancer information was a provider, 63.02% the internet, 12.04% other media, 4.50% a cancer organization, and 2.55% their social network. About 70% of participants indicated receiving a mammogram in the prior 12 months. Results indicated that women who most recently sought information from the internet had lower odds of having a mammogram than those who most recently sought information from a provider (aOR: 0.546, CI95%: 0.336-0.886, p = 0.014). These results reveal an opportunity to advance health equity by encouraging Black church-going women to obtain cancer information from providers rather than from the internet as a method to enhance mammography use. These results also reveal an opportunity to investigate what modifiable social determinants or other factors prevent Black church-going women from seeking cancer information from their preferred source, which was a provider for the majority of the sample, and designing interventions to better actualize this preference.

Abstract
Effective patient-provider communication improves mammography utilization. Using information technology (IT) promotes health outcomes. However, there are disparities in access to IT that could contribute to disparities in mammography utilization. This study aims to assess the association between IT-based health care communication and mammography utilization and to evaluate if this effect is modified by race/ethnicity and age. To this end, this study was conducted using the National Health Interview Survey from 2011 to 2018. A total of 94,290 women aged 40 years and older were included. Multiple logistic regression models were used, and odds ratios were reported. The study found that all IT-based healthcare communication strategies were significantly associated with mammography utilization in all years from 2011 to 2018. In 2018, women who looked up health information on the internet, scheduled a medical appointment on the internet, and communicated with providers by email had a significantly higher chance to use mammography (p ≤ 0.005 for all strategies across all years). White women and women aged 50 years and older benefited the most from IT-based healthcare communication. In conclusion, facilitating access to IT may help increase mammography utilization, which may contribute to eliminating disparities in breast cancer mortality.

Abstract
Cancer screening programs are public health interventions beneficial to early diagnoses and timely treatments. Despite the investment of health policies in this area, many people in the recommended age groups do not participate. While the literature is mainly focused on obstacles and factors enabling access to health services, a gap from the point of view of the target population concerns healthcare providers. Within the "Miriade" research-action project, this study aims to explore the dimensions that mediate the relationship between healthcare providers and preventive practices through the narrations of 52 referents and healthcare providers involved in breast, cervical and colorectal cancer screening. We conducted ad hoc narrative interviews and used theory-driven analysis based on Penchansky and Thomas' conceptualization and Saurman's integration of six dimensions of healthcare access: affordability, availability, accessibility, accommodation, acceptability and awareness. The results show that 21 thematic categories were representative of the access dimensions, and 5 thematic categories were not; thus, we have classified the latter as the dimension of affection. The results suggest trajectories through which psychological clinical intervention might be constructed concerning health, shared health decisions and access to cancer screening.

Abstract
Objective The present study aims at systematically reviewing research conducted on factors promoting breast, cervical and colorectal cancer screenings participation. Methods A literature search in MEDLINE/PubMed and PsycInfo from January 2017 to October 2021 was performed. Data extraction, researchers' full agreement and the inclusion criteria produced 102 eligible studies. Data were narratively synthesized and critically interpreted. Results Multiple factors favoring or hindering breast, cervical and colorectal cancer screenings were identified and summarized as factors operating at the individual level (background information, individual characteristics, emotions related to screening procedure and to cancer, knowledge and awareness), at the relational level (relationships with healthcare staff, significant others, community members), and at the healthcare system level (systems barriers/policy, lack of staff). A critical appraisal of studies revealed a fragmentation in the literature, with a compartmentalization of studies by type of cancer screening, country and specific populations of destination. Conclusions Overall findings indicated that greater integration of research results obtained independently for each cancer diagnosis and within the different countries/populations could foster a more comprehensive understanding of factors potentially enhancing the participation in breast, cervical and colorectal cancer screenings worldwide. This review, which is grounded in the current context of globalization and superdiversification in population, can help to enhance a better integration between research and practices, by supporting the development of more effective and inclusive evidence‐based interventions and health‐promotion campaigns worldwide. Research and practical implications are highlighted and discussed.

Abstract
Women with criminal-legal system involvement bear a disproportionate burden of cervical cancer, indeed 4-5 times more than women without criminal-legal system involvement. While we also know that sexual minority identification (lesbian/gay, queer, bisexual, or not straight) is more common among women with criminal-legal system involvement, we lack understanding of the cervical cancer risk and prevention practices of this group of women. In 2019-2020, we used surveys to investigate cervical cancer risk and prevention practices among 510 women with criminal-legal system involvement in Kansas City (KS and MO), Oakland (CA), and Birmingham (AL). In a secondary data analysis, we compared sexual minority women (SMW defined as women who identified as lesbian/gay, bisexual, or other -19% of the sample) to women who identified as heterosexual or straight - 81% of sample). SMW were less likely to have ever gotten a cervical cancer screening test, compared to straight women. Having a provider whom women felt they could rely on was associated with having an up-to-date cervical cancer screening test among SMW. SMW with criminal-legal system involvement are missing out on necessary cancer screenings. Further study to understand why and interventions to ensure this group receives preventive care are needed to prevent cervical cancer and reduce disparities.

Abstract
Lung cancer screening (LCS) is a process involving multiple low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) scans over multiple years. While adherence to recommended follow-up is critical in reducing lung cancer mortality, little is known about factors influencing adherence following the initial LDCT scan. The purpose of this study was to examine patients’ and providers’ depictions of continued screening and their understandings of patients’ decisions to return for follow-up. Qualitative methodology involves interviews with patients about their understanding of the screening process and perceptions of lung cancer risk, including motivations to adhere to follow-up screening and surveillance. Analysis of interview transcripts followed the general procedures of grounded theory methodology. Patient adherence to LCS was influenced by their understanding of the process of screening, and their expectations for the next steps. Perceptions of lung cancer risk and associated motivation were not static and changed throughout the screening process. Recognizing that patients’ motivations may be dynamic over the course of screening and surveillance will assist providers in helping patients make decisions regarding continued engagement with LCS.

Communicating risk and other health information in a clear, understandable, and actionable manner is critical for the prevention and control of cancer, as well as the care of affected individuals and their family members. However, the swift pace of development in communication technologies has dramatically changed the health communication landscape. This digital era presents new opportunities and challenges for cancer communication research and its impact on practice and policy. In this article, we examine the science of health communication focused on cancer and highlight important areas of research for the coming decade. Specifically, we discuss three domains in which cancer communication may occur: (a) among patients and their healthcare providers; (b) within and among families and social networks; and (c) across communities, populations, and the public more broadly. We underscore findings from the prior decade of cancer communication research, provide illustrative examples of future directions for cancer communication science, and conclude with considerations for diverse populations. Health informatics studies will be necessary to fully understand the growing and complex communication settings related to cancer: such works have the potential to change the face of information exchanges about cancer and elevate our collective discourse about this area as newer clinical and public health priorities emerge. Researchers from a wide array of specialties are interested in examining and improving cancer communication. These interdisciplinary perspectives can rapidly advance and help translate findings of cancer communication in the field of behavioral medicine.

Abstract
Background The growth of electronic medical records and use of patient portals have allowed for patients and health care providers to communicate via email and direct messaging between health care visits. Email patient-provider communication (PPC) may enhance traditional face-to-face PPC by allowing patients to ask questions, receive clear explanations, engage in shared decision-making, and confirm their understanding between in-person visits. Despite increasing trends in the use of email PPC since the early 2000s, few studies have evaluated associations between email PPC and the uptake of preventive services. Objective The objective of this study was to determine associations between the use of email PPC and the likelihood of undergoing breast, cervical, and colon cancer screenings among adults who have received health care in the past 12 months. Methods Secondary, cross-sectional data from the 2011-2015 National Health Interview Survey were combined and analyzed. For each cancer screening, inclusion criteria were based on the age of screening recommendations and prior history of cancer diagnosis (n=35,912 for breast, n=48,512 for cervical, and n=45,884 for colon). The independent variable was whether adults used email PPC in the past 12 months (yes or no). The dependent variables were whether (1) women (aged ≥40 years) received a mammogram in the past 12 months; (2) women (aged 21-65 years) received a Pap test in the past 12 months; and (3) individuals (aged ≥50 years) received a colon cancer screening in the past 12 months. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted. Results Adults who reported receiving all three cancer screenings in the past 12 months were more likely to be non-Hispanic White; be married or living with a partner; have a bachelor’s degree or higher education level; have health insurance coverage; and perceive their health as excellent, very good, or good (all P<.001). Men were more likely to receive colon cancer screenings than women (P<.001). Multivariable logistic regression models showed women who used email to communicate with their health care providers had greater odds of receiving breast (odds ratio [OR] 1.32, 95% CI 1.20-1.44) and cervical (OR 1.11, 95% CI 1.02-1.20) cancer screenings than women who did not use email PPC. Adults who used email to communicate with their health care providers had 1.55 times greater odds (95% CI 1.42-1.69) of receiving a colon cancer screening than those who did not use email PPC. Conclusions Our results demonstrate that email PPC is a marker of increased likelihood of adults completing age-appropriate cancer screenings, particularly breast, cervical, and colon cancer screenings. More research is needed to examine other factors related to the reasons for and quality of email PPC between patients and health care providers and determine avenues for health education and intervention to further explore this association.
