Classification-guided Neural Network-based Correction of Magnetic Resonance-related Gradient Artifact Residuals in Simultaneously Recorded Surface Electromyography

Spontaneous muscular activities can be studied by simultaneous recordings of surface electromyography (sEMG) and diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI). For reliable assessment of the spontaneous activity rate in sEMG data during active MR imaging, it is necessary to have a decent gradient artifact (GA) correction algorithm enabling the detection of small spontaneous activities with an amplitude of few microvolts. In this work, a neural network with weak label annotations during the training process is utilized for enhanced correction of GA residuals in the sEMG recordings. Based on sEMG signal decomposition and class-activation maps from the neural network classification, the amount of GA residuals is iteratively decreased in the sEMG signal. This leads to a reduction of the false-positive rate in automated spontaneous activity detection. Quality of GA residual correction is therefore estimated by using a specialized second neural network model. Clinical relevance- This work establishes an improved GA residual correction for simultaneously recorded sEMG data during MRI to enhance the ability for small spontaneous activity detection.

Artifact Reduction in Simultaneous EEG-fMRI: A Systematic Review of Methods and Contemporary Usage

Simultaneous electroencephalography-functional MRI (EEG-fMRI) is a technique that combines temporal (largely from EEG) and spatial (largely from fMRI) indicators of brain dynamics. It is useful for understanding neuronal activity during many different event types, including spontaneous epileptic discharges, the activity of sleep stages, and activity evoked by external stimuli and decision-making tasks. However, EEG recorded during fMRI is subject to imaging, pulse, environment and motion artifact, causing noise many times greater than the neuronal signals of interest. Therefore, artifact removal methods are essential to ensure that artifacts are accurately removed, and EEG of interest is retained. This paper presents a systematic review of methods for artifact reduction in simultaneous EEG-fMRI from literature published since 1998, and an additional systematic review of EEG-fMRI studies published since 2016. The aim of the first review is to distill the literature into clear guidelines for use of simultaneous EEG-fMRI artifact reduction methods, and the aim of the second review is to determine the prevalence of artifact reduction method use in contemporary studies. We find that there are many published artifact reduction techniques available, including hardware, model based, and data-driven methods, but there are few studies published that adequately compare these methods. In contrast, recent EEG-fMRI studies show overwhelming use of just one or two artifact reduction methods based on literature published 15–20 years ago, with newer methods rarely gaining use outside the group that developed them. Surprisingly, almost 15% of EEG-fMRI studies published since 2016 fail to adequately describe the methods of artifact reduction utilized. We recommend minimum standards for reporting artifact reduction techniques in simultaneous EEG-fMRI studies and suggest that more needs to be done to make new artifact reduction techniques more accessible for the researchers and clinicians using simultaneous EEG-fMRI.

Schrödinger filtering: a precise EEG despiking technique for EEG-fMRI gradient artifact

In EEG data acquired in the presence of fMRI, gradient-related spike artifacts contaminate the signal following the common preprocessing step of average artifact subtraction. Spike artifacts compromise EEG data quality since they overlap with the EEG signal in frequency, thereby confounding frequency-based inferences on activity. As well, spike artifacts can inflate or deflate correlations among time series, thereby confounding inferences on functional connectivity. We present Schrödinger filtering, which uses the Schrödinger equation to decompose the spike-containing input. The basis functions of the decomposition are localized and pulse-shaped, and selectively capture the various input peaks, with the spike components clustered at the beginning of the spectrum. Schrödinger filtering automatically subtracts the spike components from the data. On real and simulated data, we show that Schrödinger filtering (1) simultaneously accomplishes high spike removal and high signal preservation without affecting evoked activity, and (2) reduces spurious pairwise correlations in spontaneous activity. In these regards, Schrödinger filtering was significantly better than three other despiking techniques: median filtering, amplitude thresholding, and wavelet denoising. These results encourage the use of Schrödinger filtering in future EEG-fMRI pipelines, as well as in other spike-related applications (e.g., fMRI motion artifact removal or action potential extraction).

A simple and highly sensitive masking fluorescence detection system for capillary array electrophoresis and its application to food and medicine analysis

A high sampling rate, good stability, high throughput masking fluorescence detection system with easy positioning of each channel for capillary array electrophoresis was prepared and studied. A special mask combined with convex lenses was designed to modulate signals, without using any extra device to position each channel. The signal of each channel was detected by a photomultiplier tube, classified and saved by software. The design was used to evidently reduce the rotational vibration of optical components and to stabilize the system, so a high sampling rate was obtained by increasing the DC motor speed. To improve the optical system, optical fibers instead of conventional bulky optical components were used to transmit optical signal and to collect fluorescences in multiple directions, which greatly raised the sensitivity. Other important parameters including sampling rate, rotating speed and driven voltage laser diode (LDs) have also been investigated. Under optimal conditions, the performance of the detection system was evaluated. This novel system had a well-designed structure, and allowed independent multiple capillary operations and easy microanalysis. Its limit of detection for rhodamine 6G was 2.0 × 10^-2 µg/mL.

Monte-Carlo Analysis for Quality Estimation of Gradient Correction Algorithms in Simultaneous Surface EMG-MRI Measurements using Signal Synthesis and Class Probability

Simultaneous measurements by surface electromyography (sEMG) and diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) enable studies of small muscular activities in resting human musculature. Induced signal disturbances can hamper the evaluation of small amplitude myoelectric signals despite the application of gradient artifact correction (GAC) methods. Systematic evaluation of the quality of GAC methods is difficult due to the unknown real sEMG signal during simultaneous measurements. Therefore, a new concept for GAC quality estimation is investigated based on sEMG sample generation and classification. Signal synthesis and classification is based on a Dense-Bidirectional-Long-Short-Term-Memory (DBLSTM)-based auxiliary classifier generative adversarial network (AC-GAN). Quality of GAC and ability to detect small myoelectric activities is exemplary investigated on two common DW-MRI sequences.

Spontaneous mechanical and electrical activities of human calf musculature at rest assessed by repetitive single-shot diffusion-weighted MRI and simultaneous surface electromyography

PURPOSE

Assessment of temporal and spatial relations between spontaneous mechanical activities in musculature (SMAM) at rest as revealed by diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and electrical muscular activities in surface EMG (sEMG). Potential influences of static and radiofrequency magnetic fields on muscular activity on sEMG measurements at rest were examined systematically.

METHODS

Series of diffusion-weighted stimulated echo planar imaging were recorded with concurrent sEMG measurements. Electrical activities in sEMG were analyzed by non-parametric Friedman and two-sample Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. Direct correlation of both modalities was investigated by temporal mapping of electrical activity in sEMG to DWI repetition interval.

RESULTS

Electrical activities in sEMG and number of visible SMAMs in DWI showed a strong correlation (ρ = 0.9718). High accordance between sEMG activities and visible SMAMs in DWI in a near-surface region around sEMG electrodes was achieved. Characteristics of sEMG activities were almost similar under varying magnetic field conditions.

CONCLUSION

Visible SMAMs in DWI have shown a close and direct relation to concurrent signals recorded by sEMG. MR-related magnetic fields had no significant effects on findings in sEMG. Hence, appearance of SMAMs in DWI should not be considered as imaging artifact or as effects originating from the special conditions of MR examinations. Spatial and temporal distributions of SMAMs indicate characteristics of spontaneous (microscopic) mechanical muscular action at rest. Therefore, DWI techniques should be considered as non-invasive tools for studying physiology and pathophysiology of spontaneous activities in resting muscle.
