Abstract
BACKGROUND To develop a nursing program for the prevention and rehabilitation of shoulder and neck discomfort after thyroid cancer surgery based on the empowerment theory, and to evaluate the application effect of the program. METHODS The prevention and rehabilitation nursing program for shoulder and neck discomfort after thyroid cancer surgery was established by literature review and the Delphi method. Between July 2022 and January 2023, a total of 62 postoperative thyroid cancer patients were recruited and randomly allocated to either the intervention group (n = 31) or the control group (n = 31) in this randomized controlled trial. Comparisons of shoulder and neck function, self-efficacy, and quality of life between the 2 groups were performed using a 2-sample independent t test, Wilcoxon rank-sum test, and repeated-measures analysis of variance. RESULTS At the end of the study, the control group and intervention group were 30 cases each completed the study. After the intervention, the self-efficacy score of the intervention group was higher than the control group (P < .05), and the score of emotional function, cognitive function, and overall health dimension of the intervention group was higher than the control group (P < .05). The pain dimension score of the intervention group was lower than the control group (P < .05). There were significant differences in the group and time effects of the total shoulder joint scores between the 2 groups (P < .05). CONCLUSION This study demonstrated that the shoulder and neck rehabilitation nursing program can alleviate the symptoms of shoulder and neck discomfort and improve patients' self-efficacy and quality of life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Early palliative care (EPC) benefits some cancers, but its clinical outcomes differ depending on patients' racial and ethnic disparities, and customs. To determine whether EPC improves symptoms, emotional distress, and quality of life among Taiwanese patients with early or advanced-stage head and neck cancer (HNC). METHODS Based on participants' pathological stages, they were categorized as having early and advanced-stage HNC. Those willing and unwilling to undergo EPC were assigned to the EPC and standard groups, respectively. Their daily cancer-related symptoms were assessed using the Distress Thermometer (DT) and MD Anderson Symptom Inventory (MDASI), whose scores' concurrent validity was evaluated using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Core Quality of Life (EORTC-QLQ-C30) and Head and Neck 35 (EORTC-QLQ-H&N35) questionnaires. RESULTS Patients (n = 93) diagnosed with HNC at Taiwan's Chia-Yi Christian Hospital from November 2020 to October 2022 were recruited. The patients voluntarily split into two groups: EPC groups and standard groups (23 and 11 in early-stage; 46 and 13 in advanced-stage, respectively). DT assessment showed significant emotional distress improvements for all patients with HNC who received EPC. The EORTC-QLQ-C30 questionnaire indicated that, compared to standard interventions, EPC groups significantly improved the quality of life and some symptoms for both early and advanced-stage HNC patients. However, the EORTC-QLQ-H&N35 questionnaire found no significant difference between the two groups. Furthermore, advanced-stage patients' anticancer treatment completion rates with EPC and standard interventions were 95.35% and 75%, respectively. CONCLUSION EPC improves symptoms, emotional distress, quality of life, and treatment completion rates in Taiwanese patients with early or advanced-stage HNC. Nonetheless, further extensive clinical studies are required for validation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The incidence of early-onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC, diagnosed in patients under the age of 50 years) has been increasing around the world. Here, we aimed to systematically identify distinctive features of EOCRC. METHODS From 2020 to 2021, we conducted a nationwide survey in 19 hospitals, collecting data on advanced CRC patients' demographics, clinical features, disease knowledge, medical experiences, expenditures, and health-related quality of life (HRQOL). We compared these features between EOCRC and late-onset colorectal cancer (LOCRC, ≥ 50 years old) groups and analyzed the association between EOCRC and HRQOL using multivariate linear regression. FINDINGS In total, 991 patients with EOCRC and 3581 patients with LOCRC were included. Compared to the LOCRC group, the EOCRC group had higher levels of education, were more informed about the risk factors for CRC, were more likely to have widespread metastases throughout the body, were more inclined to undergo gene testing, and were more likely to opt for targeted therapy, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. However, HRQOL in the EOCRC group was similar to that of the LOCRC group, and no significant association was observed between EOCRC and HRQOL (beta: -0.753, P value: 0.307). INTERPRETATION In Chinese patients, EOCRC patients had more aggressive features. Despite undergoing more intensified treatments and gene testing, they had similar HRQOL compared with LOCRC. These findings advocate for a more tailored approach to treatment, especially for young CRC patients with advanced TNM stages and metastasis.

Abstract
Background Papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) is prevalent among younger populations and has a favorable survival rate. However, a significant number of patients experience psychosocial stress and a reduced quality of life (QoL) after surgical treatment. Therefore, comprehensive evaluations of the patients are essential to improve their recovery. Methods The present study enrolled 512 young and middle-aged patients diagnosed with PTC who underwent surgery at our institution between September 2020 and August 2021. Each participant completed a series of questionnaires: Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7 (GAD-7), European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30), Thyroid Cancer-Specific Quality of Life Questionnaire (THYCA-QoL), and Readiness to Return-to-Work Scale (RRTW). Results GAD-7 data showed that almost half of the study subjects were experiencing anxiety. Regarding health-related quality of life (HRQoL), participants reported the highest levels of fatigue, insomnia, voice problems, and scarring, with patients in anxious states reporting worse symptoms. Based on RRTW, more than half of the subjects had returned to work and had better HRQoL compared to the others who were evaluating a possible return to work. Age, gender, BMI, education, diet, residence, health insurance, months since surgery, monthly income, and caregiver status were significantly correlated with return to work. Additionally, having a caregiver, higher monthly income, more time since surgery, and living in a city or village were positively associated with return to work. Conclusion Young and middle-aged patients with PTC commonly experience a range of health-related issues and disease-specific symptoms following surgery, accompanied by inferior psychological well-being, HRQoL, and work readiness. It is crucial to prioritize timely interventions targeting postoperative psychological support, HRQoL improvement, and the restoration of working ability in PTC patients.

Abstract
Objective To assess the prognostic nutritional index (PNI) and quality of life (QOL) of patients with cervical cancer (CC) who underwent radiotherapy and chemotherapy and to reveal the effect of PNI on QOL and its prognostic value. Methods A total of 138 CC patients who underwent radiotherapy and chemotherapy in the Second Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University from January 2020 to October 2022 were selected as the study subjects via convenient sampling. According to the PNI cut-off value of 48.8, they were divided into a high-PNI group and a low-PNI group, and the quality of life of the two groups was compared. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to draw the survival curve, and the Log-Rank test was employed to compare the survival rates of the two groups. Results The scores of physical functioning and overall QOL in the high-PNI group were significantly higher than those in the low-PNI group (P < 0.05). The scores of fatigue, nausea and vomiting, pain and diarrhea were higher than those in the low-PNI group, and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). The objective response rates were 96.77% and 81.25% in the high-PNI group and the low-PNI group, respectively, and the difference was statistically significant (P = 0.045). The 1-year survival rates of patients with high PNI and low PNI were 92.55% and 72.56% in the high-PNI group and the low-PNI group, respectively; the difference in survival rates was statistically significant (P = 0.006). Conclusion The overall quality of life of CC patients with low PNI receiving radiotherapy and chemotherapy is lower than that of patients with high PNI. Low PNI reduces the tolerance to radiotherapy and chemotherapy and the objective response rate, which can be used as a prognostic indicator for cervical cancer patients.

Abstract
Objectives The primary purposes of this meta-analysis and systematic review were to evaluate the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of Asian breast cancer (BC) patients to understand their holistic HRQoL level and provide medical and nursing recommendations to improve and preserve their quality of life. Methods A comprehensive literature search was conducted to find cross-sectional studies published in Chinese and English concerning HRQoL in BC patients from the inceptions of databases to 14 March 2022. The databases consulted were PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane, PsyclNFO, CINAHL, and CNKI. Literature screening, data extraction, risk bias assessment, and data synthesis were independently carried out by two researchers. The Endnote X9 and Stata 15.0 software programs were used during the meta-analysis process. Results Out of the 8,563 studies identified, 23 cross-sectional studies involving 3,839 Asian BC patients were included in this meta-analysis. Two tools, namely, European Organization for the Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire C30 (EORTC QLQ-C30) and Quality of Life Questionnaire Breast Cancer module 23 (EORTC QLQ-BR23)—were used to evaluate the HRQoL of BC patients in Asia. The pooled mean of the global health status of Asian BC patients was 58.34 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 53.66–63.02). According to functional subscales of EORTC QLQ-C30 and EORTC QLQ-BR23, Asian BC patients suffered from the worst emotional functioning (pooled mean=66.38; 95% CI: 59.66–73.11) and sexual enjoyment (pooled mean=49.31; 95% CI: 31.97–63.36). In addition, fatigue (pooled mean=42.17; 95% CI: 34.46–49.88) and being upset by hair loss (pooled mean=48.38; 95% CI: 36.64–60.12) were the most obvious symptoms that Asian BC patients experienced according to the meta-analysis results of the EORTC QLQ-C30 and EORTC QLQ-BR23 symptom subscales. Conclusion Asian BC patients experience a relatively low HRQoL due to the prominent decline in their body functions, as well as the unpleasant experiences caused by their symptoms. It is suggested that timely, appropriate, and targeted intervention should be provided in relation to the physical, psychological, and social aspects of Asian BC patients’ lives to enhance their ability to function, relieve them of adverse symptoms, and improve their overall HRQoL. Abstract
Aim To translate and validate the Chinese version of the MDASI-THY among thyroid cancer patients. Background The M.D. Anderson Symptom Inventory-Thyroid Cancer module (MDASI-THY) is one of well-validated instruments for thyroid-specific symptom assessment. To date, the instrument has not been used in China. Methods After standard forward- and back-translation procedures, two instruments, the Chinese version of MDASI-THY and the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer QLQ C30, were answered by 309 thyroid patients. The content, convergent discriminant validity and reliability of the MDASI-THY were evaluated. Results The scale of content validity index (S-CVI) and the item of content validity index (I-CVI) of the instrument were over 0.80. There were significant relationships between MDASI-THY and EORTC QLQ-C30 (r range, 0.139 ~ 0.766, -0.759 ~ -0.461, p < 0.001). Symptoms were severer for patients underwent surgical treatment (Z = -9.999, p < 0.001). The Cronbach’s alpha was 0.966 (between 0.954 and 0.827 for subscales). Most symptom items had moderate to high interitem correlations (r range, 0.297 ~ 0.773). Conclusions The Chinese version of MDASI-THY demonstrated favorable validity and reliability. It can be used in development of symptom management program in thyroid cancer patients in China. Relevance to clinical practice Healthcare providers can apply this instrument to assess Chinese thyroid cancer patients to increase the understanding of their symptom experience, resulting in a better symptom management.

Abstract
This study aimed to examine the validity and reliability of the EORTC QLQ-BR45 questionnaire among breast cancer patients in Ethiopia. This study included 248 breast cancer patients who completed the QLQ-BR45 and QLQ-C30 questionnaires. The internal reliability, test–retest reliability, and the content, concurrent, convergent, divergent, and clinical validity of the tool were examined. The statistical analyses included Cronbach’s α coefficient, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, standardised root mean square residual (SRMR), comparative fit index (CFI), t-test, and root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA). All items were marked as relevant, and item-level content validity index (I-CVI) scores ranged from 0.83 to 1. The S-CVI/Ave was calculated by dividing the sum of I-CVI values by the total number of items, which was found to be 0.94. The average CVR value was 0.76. The Cronbach’s α coefficient was 0.80 for all domains. All subscales met the minimal standards of reliability except the arm symptom scale (0.66). The test–retest reliability coefficient was 0.77 for all domains. Seven out of the 12 hypothesised scales showed positive correlations (r > 0.40) between the QLQ-BR45 and QLQ-C30 scales. Multitrait scaling analysis showed that the item-scale correlations exceeded the 0.40 criterion for item-convergent validity for 11 of the 12 hypothesised scales. The correlation coefficients between an item and its own subscale were significantly higher than with other subscales. The EORTC QLQ-BR45 had good reliability and validity, and it can be used to measure the quality of life of breast cancer patients in Ethiopia.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Gastric cancer is the fifth most common cancer worldwide and the detection rate of proximal gastric cancer has been increasing. Currently, surgical resection using gastrectomy and proper perigastric lymphadenectomy is the only treatment option to enhance the survival rate of patients with gastric cancer. Laparoscopic total gastrectomy (LTG) is increasingly performed for adenocarcinoma of the oesophagogastric junction. However, totally LTG (TLTG) is only performed by a few surgeons due to difficulty associated with oesophagojejunostomy (OJ), in which there is no consensus on a standardised anastomosis technique. We propose a randomised trial to compare functional end-to-end anastomosis (FETE) and side-to-side anastomosis (Overlap) for OJ. METHODS AND ANALYSIS A prospective, randomised, open-label, single-centre, interventional trial has been designed to evaluate the quality of life (QoL) outcomes and safety of FETE and Overlap, with a 1-year follow-up as the primary endpoint. The trial began in 2020 and is scheduled to enrol 96 patients according to a previous sample size calculation. Patients were randomly allocated to the FETE or Overlap groups with a follow-up of 1 year to assess QoL after the procedure. All relevant clinical data including biological markers were collected. The primary indicator is the D-value between the postoperative and preoperative QoL. Student's t-tests will be used to compare continuous variables, while χ2 tests or Fisher's exact tests will be used to compare categorical variables. Statistical analysis will be performed with SPSS V.23.0 statistical software. A p<0.05 will be considered statistically significant. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION This study has been approved by the Hospital Institutional Review Board of Huashan Hospital, Fudan University (2020-1055). The results will be submitted for publication in peer-reviewed journals. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER ChiCTR2000035583.

Abstract
AIMS To determine the most frequently utilized functional status assessment instruments for patients with brain tumors, compare their contents, using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF), and their psychometric properties. METHODS A scoping review was conducted to explore possible assessment instruments and summarize the evidence. A systematic literature search was performed for identification of the frequently used functional assessment tool in clinical trials in PubMed, ScienceDirect, and ProQuest databases. The content of most used instruments was linked to the ICF categories. The psychometric qualities of these assessment tools were systematically searched and analyzed. RESULTS Nine most used assessment tools in clinical trials were identified. The most frequently used assessment instrument is the Karnofsky Performance Scale, which is developed for a general assessment of oncological patients. Out of four self-assessment tools, two were disease-specific (EORTC QLQ-BN20 and FACT-Br), EORTC QLQ-C30 has been shown good psychometric properties in patients with brain tumors as well as in patients with various oncological diseases, similar to the SF-36, it is used in patients with brain tumors as well as in patients with various diseases. The Functional Independence Measure and the Barthel Index were two objective assessment tools that described functioning, but two were neuropsychological tests (MMSE and Trial Making Test). Two hundred eighty-three meaningful concepts were identified and linked to 102 most relevant second-level categories covering all components of the ICF. Forty-nine studies reporting psychometric properties of those nine assessment tools were identified, indicating good reliability and validity for all the instruments. CONCLUSION Nine most frequently utilized functional status assessment instruments for patients with brain tumors represent all components of the ICF and have good psychometric properties. However, the choice of the tool depends on the clinical question posed and the aim of its use.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate potential effects and satisfaction of dignity therapy among patients with hematologic neoplasms in the Chinese cultural context. METHODS Sixty-six patients with hematologic neoplasms were randomly assigned into either a dignity therapy group (N = 32) or control group (N = 34). The primary outcomes were level of hope and spiritual well-being, as measured according to the Herth Hope Index and the 12-item Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Spiritual Well-Being, at baseline (T0), 1-week follow-up (T1), and 4-week follow-up (T2). Satisfaction with dignity therapy was assessed using a 5-grade marking system at T1. RESULTS Among the 66 participants, 61 remained at 1-week follow-up and 57 remained at 4-week follow-up. Group differences were found in the total score and the scores of each dimension of spiritual well-being and level of hope at T1 and T2 (p < 0.05). Interaction effects were statistically significant in terms of spiritual well-being (p < 0.001) and level of hope (p < 0.001). Majority of the patients (93.34%) and family members (96.67%) gave positive evaluations ("very satisfactory" or "relatively satisfactory") for the dignity therapy intervention. CONCLUSION Implementing dignity therapy among patients with hematologic neoplasms in China was associated with good efficacy in improving spiritual well-being and the level of hope in the short term. Difficulties and solutions involved in the implementation of dignity therapy in multiple cultures deserve attention.

Abstract
Quality of life (QoL) is an important outcome criterion in cancer research and practice. Multiple studies have been performed to test the short-term temporal stability (1 day–2 weeks) of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire EORTC QLQ-C30, but its stability over longer periods of time is largely unknown. The EORTC QLQ-C30 was administered at two time points between 3 and 12 months apart in six samples of cancer patients with varying characteristics (N between 298 and 923). Averaged across the six samples, the coefficients of temporal stability (intra-class correlation coefficients ICC) were between 0.31 and 0.59 for the single scales. The 2-item global health/QoL scale showed a mean coefficient of 0.44. When the stability coefficients were calculated separately for males and females and for younger vs. older patients, no systematic gender or age differences were found in the temporal stability of the QoL scales, though the stability was slightly higher in males (vs. females) and in older subgroups (vs. younger subgroups). It is nearly impossible to predict the course a cancer patients’ QoL will take over a several month period. Repeated measurements are necessary to track QoL developments.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION A novel neurosurgical enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) program shortens postoperative hospital stay and accelerates functional recovery in elective craniotomy patients. There is a need to evaluate the impact of ERAS program on patients' health-related quality of life (HRQOL). METHODS In a single-center randomized controlled trial, patients were randomized 1:1 to receive perioperative ERAS or conventional care. As a secondary outcome, HRQOL was measured with the EORTC QLQ-C30/BN20 prior to randomization (baseline), at discharge, and at 3- and 6-month follow-up. RESULTS A total of 65 patients (ERAS: n = 36, conventional care: n = 29) with pathologically confirmed glioma (WHO grade 2-4) were included in the analysis. Progression-free survival at 6 months and HRQOL at baseline were similar between the two groups. Changes of scores did not vary significantly over time, but differed significantly between intervention groups. A clinically relevant better QoL (at 3-month follow-up), physical functioning (at 6-month follow-up) and role functioning (at discharge) was observed in patients in the ERAS group. Symptom scores of constipation (at discharge), motor dysfunction (at discharge, 3- and 6-month follow-up), drowsiness (at 3- and 6-month follow-up), weakness of legs (at 3-month follow-up), and nausea/vomiting (at discharge and 6-month follow-up) were significantly lower in the ERAS group. CONCLUSIONS The neurosurgical ERAS program seems to improve functioning and symptoms scores in glioma patients within 6-month follow-up compared with conventional care. The intervention has a significant main effect HRQOL changes without significant interaction with time. Future well-powered multicenter studies are warranted to confirm this result and address long-term benefits. Abstract
PURPOSE Both Inflammation and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) are independent prognosticators in HCC patients. We hypothesized that inflammation can cause impairment in HRQoL and investigated the correlation between inflammatory status and HRQoL in HCC patients. METHODS Clinical, laboratory and HRQoL (using EORTC QLQ-C30, QLQ-HCC18, C30 and HCC18 index-scores) data were prospectively collected from HCC patients at diagnosis. Correlation analyses were performed between HRQoL and inflammation-based markers including C-reactive protein (CRP), CRP/albumin ratio (CRP/alb), Glasgow Prognostic Score (GPS), Inflammation-Based Index (IBI) and Prognostic Index (PI). RESULTS Among 445 HCC patients, higher inflammatory states were significantly correlated with worse HRQoL. For CRP and CRP/alb ratio, the HRQoL factors with higher correlations included C30 and HCC18 index-scores, certain QLQ-C30 domains and items ('physical functioning', 'role functioning', 'fatigue', 'pain', 'appetite loss') and QLQ-HCC18 items ('fatigue', 'body image', 'nutrition' and 'abdominal swelling'), where the Pearson's correlation coefficients were up to 0.416. Multivariate analyses indicated that worse HRQoL factors were significantly correlated with worse scores in GPS, IBI and PI. CONCLUSION In HCC patients, inflammatory status correlates with HRQoL at presentation. In particular, relatively stronger correlations with CRP-based markers have been observed in HRQoL scales that assess constitutional symptoms (QLQ-C30 'physical functioning', 'role functioning', 'fatigue', 'appetite loss' and QLQ-HCC18 'fatigue' and 'nutrition') and tumor burden (QLQ-C30 'pain' and QLQ-HCC18 'abdominal swelling' and 'body image'). Future studies are warranted to evaluate whether intervention that reduces inflammation could improve HRQoL in HCC patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Current guidelines recommend open gastrectomy with D2 lymph node dissection and adjuvant chemotherapy as the standard treatment for advanced gastric cancer. However, the prognosis is not satisfactory. Perioperative chemotherapy has been proposed to improve survival. Although still in debate, the efficacy of laparoscopic distal gastrectomy (LDG) in patients with advanced gastric cancer has been demonstrated in a few trials. Therefore, LDG after neoadjuvant chemotherapy can be a candidate for future standard treatment on advanced distal gastric cancer. We propose a randomised phase II trial to compare LDG and open distal gastrectomy (ODG) after neoadjuvant chemotherapy for advanced gastric cancer. METHODS AND ANALYSIS To test the efficacy and safety, a randomised, open-label, single-centre, phase II trial was designed to evaluate the non-inferiority of LDG compared with ODG after neoadjuvant chemotherapy, with 3-year recurrence-free survival as the primary endpoint. The chosen critical value of a non-inferiority margin was an increase of <8%. The study started in 2015 and enrolled 96 patients according to a prior sample size calculation. Intention-to-treat and per-protocol approach will be used for efficacy analysis, and as-treated analysis will be applied for safety analysis. The survival curves will be constructed as time-to-event plots using the Kaplan-Meier method and compared using log-rank tests and Cox proportional hazards model. All statistical analyses will be conducted in standard statistical software with a significance level of 0.05. Abstract
BACKGROUND Breast cancer (BC) poses a tremendous threat to the health of women worldwide, especially triple-negative breast cancers (TNBCs). Currently, the curative effect of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been recognized in more and more people worldwide; however, the specific effect has not been systematically evaluated. The purpose of this cohort study is to evaluate the clinical effects of TCM syndrome differentiation on recurrence and metastasis rate, survival rate, and the quality of life in patients with TNBC. METHODS This study is a multicenter observational cohort trial taking 2 years. A total of 620 patients will be allocated at a ratio of 1:1 to receive TCM or not. The primary outcomes are progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS), which are calculated at the end of the trial. Secondary outcomes include TCM symptoms, Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS), ECOG score, European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Breast-Cancer-Specific Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-BR23), as well as clinical indicators including tumor markers, immune function evaluation, chest computed tomography/magnetic resonance imaging, and abdominal B-ultrasound. Assessments will be performed at baseline and 3, 6, 9, 12, 16, and 20 weeks after observation. DISCUSSION This will be the first clinical trial to evaluate the PFS and OS in TNBC patients receiving TCM, which may be used to assess the feasibility of a larger-scale clinical trial in the future, and formulate a standardized TCM treatment plan. Abstract
Objective To evaluate the psychometric properties of the seven theoretical models proposed in the literature for European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire Core 30 (EORTC QLQ-C30), when applied to a sample of Brazilian cancer patients. Methods Content and construct validity (factorial, convergent, discriminant) were estimated. Confirmatory factor analysis was performed. Convergent validity was analyzed using the average variance extracted. Discriminant validity was analyzed using correlational analysis. Internal consistency and composite reliability were used to assess the reliability of instrument. Results A total of 1,020 cancer patients participated. The mean age was 53.3±13.0 years, and 62% were female. All models showed adequate factorial validity for the study sample. Convergent and discriminant validities and the reliability were compromised in all of the models for all of the single items referring to symptoms, as well as for the “physical function” and “cognitive function” factors. Conclusion All theoretical models assessed in this study presented adequate factorial validity when applied to Brazilian cancer patients. The choice of the best model for use in research and/or clinical protocols should be centered on the purpose and underlying theory of each model.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Bevacizumab (BEV) plus daily temozolomide (TMZ) as a salvage therapy have been recommended to recurrent glioma. The objective of this retrospective study was to evaluate the effect of the combined regimen on health related quality of life (HRQL) and treatment response in patients with recurrent glioma. PATIENTS AND METHODS Twenty patients with recurrent glioma were treated with BEV (5-10 mg/kg, i.v. every 2 weeks) plus daily TMZ (daily, 50 mg/m2). The treatment response was evaluated via the RANO criteria. HRQL were measured using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire core 30 (QLQ-C30) and Brain Module (QLQ-BN20). RESULTS Twenty patients received a total of 85 cycles of BEV with a median number of 4 cycles (range: 2-10). No patients showed complete response (CR) to treatment. Twelve patients had partial response (PR), stable disease (SD) in 5 patients with, and 3 patients showed progressive disease (PD). In the functioning domains of QLQ-C30, physical functioning, cognitive functioning and emotional functioning significantly improved after the second cycle of BEV compared to baseline, with the mean score of 45.0 vs. 64.0 (p = 0.020), 55.8 vs. 71.7 (p = 0.020) and 48.3 vs. 67.5 (p = 0.015), respectively. In the symptom scales, the scores of pain and nausea/vomiting significantly decreased compared to baseline from the mean score of 39.1 to 20.0 (p = 0.020) and 29.2 to 16.7 (p = 0.049), respectively. Score of global health status also increased from 47.5 to 63.3 (p = 0.001). As determined with the QLQ-BN20, motor dysfunction (43.3 vs. 25.0, p = 0.021), weakness of legs (36.7 vs. 18.3, p = 0.049), headache (38.3 vs. 20.0, p = 0.040), and drowsiness (50.0 vs. 30.0, p = 0.026) after the second cycle of BEV also significantly improved compared to baseline. CONCLUSION BEV plus daily TMZ as a salvage therapy improved HRQL in patients with recurrent glioma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To investigate the effect of psychological intervention on nutrient status of perioperative patients with lung cancer. METHODS Overall, 176 lung cancer patients admitted to Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital, Shanghai China from 2015 to 2016 were divided into control group (n=88) and study group (n=88). Conventional nursing strategy was adopted for patients in control group, while psychological nursing strategy was implemented for those in the study group, and the specific nursing efficiency was compared between the two groups. In addition to the assessment with Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90) and Quality of Life Questionnaire-Core 36 (QLQ-C30), patients were required to fulfill the evaluations with nutrition risk screening 2002 (NRS2002) and Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA). RESULTS After nursing care, significant amelioration in scores of SCL-90 and QLQ-C30 of patients were seen in the study group (P<0.05). In the study group, the scores of NRS2002 and PG-SGA were all lower than those in the control group (P<0.001). Besides, PG-SGA score was also significantly correlated with the levels of serum total proteins, serum albumin, hemoglobin, reduction in diet and weight (P<0.01), while only reduction in diet and weight was obviously correlated with the score of NRS2002 (P<0.01). Moreover, a significant correlation was identified between the scores of PG-SGA and NRS2002 (P<0.01). CONCLUSION Psychological intervention could effectively alleviate the psychological stress response and ameliorate the nutrient status of lung cancer patients in perioperative period, thereby reducing the negative feelings and increasing the life quality of patients.

Abstract
Background To evaluate the relationship between quality of life (QOL) and physical as well as psychological variables in Chinese breast cancer patients. Methods This multicenter cross-sectional study enrolled 254 Chinese breast cancer patients in different stages and treatment phases. They answered standard instruments assessing QOL (EORTC), somatic symptom severity (PHQ-15), depression (PHQ-9), anxiety (GAD-7), health-related anxiety (WI-7), illness perception (BIPQ), and sense of coherence (SOC-9). Canonical correlation was applied to identify the strongest correlates between the physical, emotional and social QOL scales and the physical and psychological variables. Results In our sample, a low global QOL was significantly associated with the following physical and psychological variables: symptom-related disability (Karnofsky Index) (r = .211, p < .01), somatic symptom severity (r = −.391, p < .001), depression (r = −.488, p < .001), anxiety (r = −.439, p < .001), health-related anxiety (r = −.398, p < .001), dysfunctional illness perception (r = −.411, p < .001), and sense of coherence (r = .371, p < .001). In the canonical correlation analysis, high somatic symptom severity, depression, anxiety, dysfunctional illness perception, and low sense of coherence showed the strongest correlations with low physical, emotional and social functioning. The first three significant canonical correlations between these two sets of variables were .78, .56, and .45. Conclusions QOL in Chinese breast cancer patients is strongly associated with psychological factors. Our results suggest that Chinese physicians and nurses should incorporate these factors into their care for women with breast cancer to improve patients’ QOL.

Abstract
The shared goal of all parties developing therapeutics against malignant gliomas is to positively impact the lives of people affected by these cancers. Clinical outcome assessment (COA) tools, including measures of patient-reported outcome, performance outcome, clinician-reported outcome, and observer-reported outcome, allow patient-focused assessments to complement traditional efficacy measures such as overall survival and radiographic endpoints. This review examines the properties of various COA measures used in malignant glioma clinical trials to date and cross references their content to the priority signs, symptoms, and functional limitations defined through a community survey conducted by the National Brain Tumor Society. The overarching goal of this initiative is to identify COA measures that are feasible and have appropriate psychometric properties for use in this patient population as well as highlight where further development is needed.

Abstract
This systematic review describes psychosocial and quality of life (QOL) measures used in psycho-oncology research with cancer patients and caregivers in China. Medline and PsycINFO databases were searched (1980-2014). Studies reviewed met the following criteria: English language; peer-reviewed; sampled Chinese cancer patients/caregivers; developed, validated or assessed psychometric properties of psychosocial or QOL outcome measures; and reported validation data. The review examined characteristics of measures and participants, translation and cultural adaptation processes and psychometric properties of the measures. Ninety five studies met review criteria. Common characteristics of studies reviewed were they: assessed primarily QOL measures, sampled patients with breast, colorectal, or head and neck cancer, and validated existing measures (>80%) originating in North America or Europe. Few studies reported difficulties translating measures. Regarding psychometric properties of the measures >50% of studies reported subscale reliabilities <α = 0.70, <50% reported test-retest reliability, and <30% reported divergent validity. Few reported sensitivity, specificity or responsiveness. Improved accuracy and transparency of reporting for translation, cultural adaptation and psychometric testing of psychosocial measures is needed. Developing support structures for translating and validating psychosocial measures would enable this and ensure Chinese psycho-oncology clinical practice and research keeps pace with international focus on patient reported outcome measures and data management.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Health-related quality of life (HRQL) is a fundamental outcome in oncology patients and quality of life (QOL) assessment requires clinically relevant questionnaires. The purpose of this study was translation and definition of measurement properties and the clinical validity of Quality of Life Questionnaire (QLQ) -OG25 module in Persian patients with oesophagus, oesophagogastric junction (OGJ) or gastric cancers. MATERIALS AND METHODS The translation procedure followed European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) guidelines. Both EORTC QLQ-OG25 and a core questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30) were administered to patients with oesophagus (150), OG junction (93) and gastric (32) cancer undergoing multi-modal treatments. Convergent and discriminant validity, Cronbach's alpha coefficient and known-groups comparisons were used to examine reliability and validity. RESULTS In all, 275 patients (mean age 62 years) completed both questionnaires. Compliance rate was high and the questionnaire module was well accepted. We found good reliability for multi-item subscales of QLQ-OG25 (Cronbach's alpha coefficients 0.76-0.89). About 73% had TNM staging and scales distinguished between clinically distinct groups of patients. However, patients in palliative group experienced compromised functional status and worse treatment-associated symptoms than those in the potentially curative group. Test-retest scores were consistent. Multi-trait scaling analysis demonstrated good convergent and discriminant validity. CONCLUSIONS Overall, the Persian version of QLQ-OG25 demonstrated psychometric and clinical validity that supports its application as a supplement to the original tool (EORTC QLQ-C30) when assessing HRQL in patients with upper-gastrointestinal (GI) cancer both in curative and palliative phases.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate longitudinal quality of life and late neurotoxicity (>12 mo) of tomotherapy in patients with primary benign and low-grade brain tumors. METHODS Between January 2006 and October 2009, 49 patients with brain tumors were treated with tomotherapy at 2 radiotherapy centers in Canada. The median age of the patients was 51.0 years (range, 21 to 74 y); there were 21 men (42.86%) and 28 women (57.14%). All 49 patients had an initial Karnofsky performance score ≥70. One patient (2.04%) received 45 Gy in 25 fractions, 27 patients (55.10%) received 50.4 Gy in 28 fractions, 15 patients (30.6%) received 54 Gy in 30 fractions, and 5 patients (10.2%) received 60 Gy in 30 fractions. A total of 47 patients were analyzed for late toxicity and outcomes. RESULTS Changes in the Karnofsky Performance Status of the patients did not reach statistical significance (P>0.05). The majority of the quality of life parameters that reached a statistically significant level (P<0.05) of change at 2 years were changes toward improvement (drowsiness, itchy skin, emotional functioning, fatigue, nausea, and appetite). Statistically significant (P<0.05) interval deterioration in physical, role, and social functioning was observed. Actuarial overall survival at 5 years was 91.6%; disease-free survival at 5 years was 86.6%. CONCLUSIONS IMRT helical tomotherapy is well tolerated, without statistically significant constitutional and late neurotoxicity up to the 2-year mark.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study was designed to examine the psychometric properties and measurement equivalence of the English and Chinese versions of the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Cognitive Function (Version 3) (FACT-Cog) in multiethnic Asian patients with breast cancer. METHODS This prospective study involved patients with breast cancer from the National Cancer Centre Singapore. The concurrent validity of the FACT-Cog was assessed according to its strength of correlation with the validated European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Core Questionnaire 30 cognitive functioning scale, and its association with fatigue, global health status, and anxiety. The known-group validity was assessed on the basis of receipt of chemotherapy. Factor analysis was conducted to ascertain the one-factor structure of each cognitive domain. The reliability was evaluated by using Cronbach's alpha and intraclass correlation coefficient within the cognitive domains. Multiple regression analyses were performed to compare the total scores between the two language versions, adjusting for covariates. RESULTS A total of 185 English-speaking and 143 Chinese-speaking patients were recruited. Both the English and Chinese FACT-Cog total scores correlated strongly with the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Core Questionnaire 30 cognitive functioning scale scores (r = 0.725 and 0.646), whereas correlations with fatigue, anxiety, and global health status were weak to moderate (|r| = 0.376-0.589). Regarding the known-group validity, more severe perceived cognitive disturbance was observed among patients receiving chemotherapy than among those who were not for both versions (P = .010 and .008, respectively). Internal consistencies within the cognitive domains were high (Cronbach's α 0.707-0.929), and test-retest reliability was satisfactory for both versions (intraclass correlation coefficient 0.762 and 0.697). The measurement equivalence between the English and Chinese versions was established for all domains except the multitasking domain. CONCLUSION The English and Chinese versions of the FACT-Cog are valid, reliable, and equivalent for clinical and research use.

Abstract
Background The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Brain Cancer Module has been translated into Korean, but to date, its reliability and validity have been evaluated in a pilot study alone. The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Core Questionnaire is, overall, a valid instrument to assess the health-related quality of life in Korean cancer patients, although its reliability and validity have not yet been evaluated in patients with brain tumors. This study aimed at evaluating the psychometric properties of these instruments in patients with brain tumors. Findings The 2 instruments were used for 307 Korean patients with brain tumors. Multi-trait scaling confirmed the scale structure of the instruments with good item convergent and discriminant validity. The reliability was acceptable for all scales except for cognitive functioning and nausea and vomiting. The instruments could be used to distinguish between clinically distinct groups of patients. Conclusions The study findings indicate that the instruments are valid and suitable for the assessment of the health-related quality of life in patients with brain tumors as well as in those with primary brain cancer.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to translate into Polish and validate the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Quality of Life Questionnaire Ophthalmic Module (QLQ-OPT30). The QLQ-OPT30 was translated and pilot-tested according to EORTC guidelines. Patients were qualified based on the histological or ophthalmoscopic and ultrasonographic diagnosis of uveal melanoma. Each patient filled out the Polish version of the EORTC Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30), the QLQ-OPT30 module and a personal questionnaire. Patients were divided into three groups according to treatment type, melanoma localisation and possible negative outcomes of the disease or treatment. Reliability and validity test were performed and patients' comments were analysed. Our study included 94 patients--50 women (53.2%) and 44 men (46.8%) in the mean age of 58.4 (±13) years. Treatment type and melanoma location did not influence the health-related quality of life. The QLQ-OPT30, apart from two scales, showed positive internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha coefficients range: 0.70-0.88). We found the Polish version of the EORTC QLQ-OPT30 module a useful tool for measuring health-related quality of life in uveal melanoma patients. Although its discriminative validity is somewhat limited it still can be recommended for clinical use in the Polish population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study compared prospectively the quality of life (QoL), function and mood of patients about to undergo surgery for either an intracranial supratentorial tumour or a spinal degenerative condition. The QoL scores were also compared to that of cohorts with a range of extracranial cancers. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study took place in a Scottish NHS Neurosurgical Unit. Patients were assessed on the day prior to surgery for their QoL (European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC)-QLQ C30), mood status (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Score), Performance status (Karnosky Score, timed 10-m walk) and disability (Barthel Disability Index). All tests were performed by a single trained psychologist. RESULTS Between 2007 and 2009, 101 patients with intracranial tumours, 75 age- and gender-matched patients with degenerative spinal disorders and 80 healthy adults were evaluated. There was no difference in the mood or disability scores between the two patient cohorts, but mood was significantly worse than a matched healthy cohort. The spinal cohort had significantly worse scores on the Karnovsky Scale, timed 10-m walk and for Global Health than those of the brain tumour cohort. They also had worse mean scores on all five functional scales, as well as six of the nine symptom/single-item scales, of the EORTC QLQ C30. SUMMARY Patients with degenerative spinal disorders awaiting surgery on the NHS have significantly impaired QoL in multiple domains as well as other functional and mood disorders. Not only are their scores worse than a brain tumour cohort but they are also worse than many cancer cohorts described in the literature using the EORTC QLQ C30. These findings suggest that preoperative care, assessment and management of NHS patients with degenerative spinal disorders could be improved and that the EORTC QLQ C30 may be a useful tool for audit purposes in this cohort.
