Predictors of Perceived Family Sense of Coherence in Parents of Children with Cancer

Objectives:

Despite improvement in childhood cancer survival in recent decades, it is still an extremely challenging health condition for parents. The impacts of childhood cancer on the family as a whole are recently interested by researchers. Family coherence is one of these concepts and health-care providers need to understand the perception of parents of family coherence. This study aimed to assess the correlation between perceived family sense of coherence (SOC) in parents of children with cancer; with socio-demographic, psycho-emotional and family-related variables.

Materials and Methods:

This cross-sectional correlational study recruited 125 parents of children with cancer attending hospitals in Tehran in 2020, selected by convenience sampling method. The correlation between family SOC and demographic variables, chronic sorrow, coping behaviours, family functioning and social support was investigated using regression analysis.

Results:

The mean score perceived sense of family coherence in parents of children with cancer was higher in fathers (Beta = 0.17, P = 0.02), urban residents (beta = –0.2, P = 0.01) and homeowners (beta = –0.27, P = 0.001). The sense of family coherence had positive correlations with income grade (beta = 0.27, P = 0.006), coping behaviours (beta = 1.28, P = 0.002), social support (beta = 0.67, P = 0.001), negative correlations with the disturbance in family problem-solving (beta = –0.28, P = 0.006) and chronic sorrow (beta=-0.39, P = 0.001).

Conclusion:

The present study expanded the concept of family SOC in nursing knowledge and attracted the attention of the providers of family-centred care to the parents of children with cancer and their concerns, which directly and indirectly affect the entire family’s health.

Sense of Coherence in Parents of Children With Cancer and Its Relationship With Self-Construal in Southeastern Iran

This study aimed to determine sense of coherence and its relationship with self-construal in parents of children with cancer in southeastern Iran. In this descriptive correlational study, 127 parents of children with cancer were studied using sense of coherence scale (SOC) and self-construal scale (SCS) in Iran. The results of the study showed that total mean score of SOC was 51.4 ± 14.2 and the interdependent self-construal (INT) in parents was higher than independent self-construal (IND). Also, the relationship between SOC and SCS showed that IND had a positive and statistically significant relationship with SOC manageability subscale. The weak SOC in the studied parents can cause more stress and suffering in dealing with their child's disease. It is essential that health care providers provide a comprehensive program to enhance parents' SOC and it should be noted that people who have a more INT felt less able to manage challenging situations.

Mothers' sense of coherence and oral health-related quality of life in cleft lip and palate children visiting a private dental college: A Survey

Background:

In addition to an adjusting physical appearance, children with cleft lip and palate also deal with psychological and psychosocial limitation. Mothers' sense of coherence (SOC) could be a psychosocial determinant of oral health quality of life (OH-QoL) of cleft lip and palate patients. Hence, the present study was done to assess the relationship of mothers' SOC on OH-QoL in cleft lip and palate patients.

Materials and Methods:

The present cross-sectional questionnaire study was conducted on mothers of cleft lip and palate children. The first part consisted of demographic details. The second part of scale was the early childhood and oral health impact scale (ECOHIS) which had a total 13 questions with responses on a 4-point Likert scale. The third part was to assess mothers' SOC using a short version of SOC-13 consists of 13 items on a 7-point Likert scale. Chi-square test was applied to assess the association between mothers' SOC, sociodemographic characteristic, and children's OHRQoL. In the analysis, P < 0.05 was considered significant.

Results:

Out of 69% of low SOC population, 21.73% were rural, 20.39% were from peri-urban, and 57.97% population was from urban areas. Out of 150 participants, 2.40% in high ECOHIS were illiterate/primary school, “31.32% were high school/intermediate/diploma had high ECOHIS while 66.26% were high school/intermediate/diploma” had low ECOHIS, and 25.37% were graduate/postgraduate. Mothers' education and locality were statistically significant P < 0.001.

Conclusion:

Action to enhance mothers' SOC might form part of oral health promotion and help to improve the oral health quality of life of cleft lip and palate patients.

The effect of family-centered education on the quality of life of adolescents with spinal cord injuries

Background and Purpose:

Spinal injury is a destructive complication creating huge changes in the teen health and lifestyle, depending on its extent and severity. Although most of the complications of this disease are treatable, they impose huge costs on the healthcare system, the patient, and his family. The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of family-centered education on the quality of life and self-esteem of adolescents with spinal cord injuries.

Method:

The present study is a quasi-experimental study. Adolescents (108 old) with spinal cord injuries entered the present study through stratified sampling with appropriate allocation. The participants were compared in two groups of experimental and control. The data was collected using demographic information questionnaire as well as Ferrans and Powers’ quality of life index in spinal cord injury. Four weeks after the intervention, the research questionnaires were completed once more by the adolescents of both groups. Data analysis was conducted by using T-square test, independent t-test, Fisher's exact test, and analysis of variance.

Finding:

According to results, quality of life mean score of adolescents with spinal cord injuries was 23.05 ± 122.65 before the intervention. It became 22.64 ± 148.15 after the intervention. With respect to importance, quality of life mean score of these adolescents changed from 20.83 ± 164.07 to 21.62 ± 174.99.

Conclusion:

Given the effect of family-centered education on the quality of life in adolescents with spinal cord injuries, it seems essential to create necessary grounds for training families having adolescents with spinal cord injuries by nurses to improve their quality of life as well as conducting researches on their problems.
