Abstract
Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), which accounts for 85% of lung cancer cases, calls for better therapy. Yi-Fei-San-Jie-pill (YFSJ), a well-applicated traditional Chinese medicine formula, was reported to be effective in the treatment of NSCLC. However, its anti-tumor mechanism still needs to be fully elucidated. Herein, a reliable preclinical orthotopic but not subcutaneous model of NSCLC in mice was established to evaluate the anti-cancer properties and further validate the mechanisms of YFSJ. A bioinformatic analysis was executed to identify the potential targets and key pathways of YFSJ on NSCLC. In detail, the anti-tumor effect of YFSJ and the autophagy inhibitor 3-MA was evaluated according to the tumor fluorescence value and comparison of different groups’ survival times. As a result, YFSJ markedly decreased tumor size and prolonged survival time in contrast with those in the orthotopic model group (p < 0.05), and it also significantly regulated the protein expression levels of apoptosis- and autophagy-related proteins. In conclusion, this study provides convincing evidence that YFSJ could inhibit the growth of tumors and prolong the survival time of tumor-bearing mice based on the NSCLC orthotopic model, and its anti-tumor effect was closely associated with the promotion of apoptosis and interference of autophagy coupled with regulation of immune infiltration.

Systematic Review: Guideline-Based Approach for the Management of Asthma and Subtypes via Chinese Medicine. EVIDENCE-BASED COMPLEMENTARY AND ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE 2021; 2021:4319657. Abstract
Background Asthma is a chronic condition that results in the inflammation and narrowing of airways, often clinically presenting as wheeze and shortness of breath. Little is known of the mechanisms of action (MOA) of herbs used to treat asthma. The aim of this study is to review existing data regarding known MOA of traditional Chinese medicine which will aid in the understanding of possible interactions between Western drugs and Chinese herbs as well as the standardization of management via a proposed guideline to improve patient safety and possible synergism in the long term. Methods We searched through 5 databases for commonly prescribed herbs and formulas for asthma and narrowed down the search to identify the underlying MOA of individual herbs that could specifically target asthma symptoms. We included studies that stated the MOA of individual herbs when used for treating symptoms of asthma, excluding them if they are described as part of a formula. Results A total of 26 herbs commonly prescribed for asthma with known mechanism of action were identified. Herbs used for asthma were found to have similar MOA as that for drugs. Based on existing GINA guidelines, a guideline is proposed which includes a total of 5 steps depending on the severity of asthma and the herbs' MOA. 16 formulas were subsequently identified for the management of asthma, which consist of 12 “stand-alone” and 4 “add-on” formulas. “Stand-alone” formulas used independently for asthma generally follow the GINA guidelines but do not proceed beyond step 3. These formulas consist mainly of beta-agonist and steroid-like effects. “Add-on” formulas added as adjunct to “stand-alone” formulas, however, mainly act on T helper cells or have steroid-like effects. Conclusion Through the understanding of MOA of herbs and their respective formulas, it will ensue greater patient safety and outcomes.

Abstract
Under China's healthcare reforms, community health service centres (CHCs) have been established as the preferred primary care providers. Even with this change, there is still little attention paid to patients' usual source of care (USC) from CHCs in Northeastern China. The main purposes of this study were to explore the determinants of usual source of community health service and to examine the association between usual source of community health service and patients' experiences with primary care. A cross-sectional survey with 515 adult patients at CHCs in Jilin Province, China, was conducted between July 2016 and November 2016. The patients' experiences with primary care were assessed with the Primary Care Assessment Tool (PCAT). Patients with self-perceived poor health status (odds ratio = 1.984, 95% confidence interval = 1.145-3.437) and chronic disease (odds ratio = 2.207, 95% confidence interval = 1.203-4.051) were more likely to have a usual source of community health service than patients with self-perceived good health status or without chronic disease. Patients scored the highest on comprehensiveness of services available (Mean = 2.87) and the lowest on community orientation (Mean = 1.83) in all domains of the PCAT, with values ranging from 1 to 4. A multiple linear regression analysis revealed that patients with a usual source of community health service had significantly higher overall scores than those without (B = 0.205, p < .001). This study demonstrated the important role of CHCs in providing affordable health services for patients with chronic disease or poor health status. Moreover, patients who chose a CHC as a USC had better experiences with primary care compared with patients who did not choose a CHC as a USC. However, community-oriented services need to be improved, and efforts to improve patients' experiences should include policies that incentivise patients to adopt a CHC as their USC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Asthma is one of the most common chronic inflammatory conditions of the lungs in modern society. Asthma is associated with airway hyperresponsiveness and remodeling of the airways, with typical symptoms of cough, wheezing, shortness of breath and chest tightness. Interleukins (IL) play an integral role in its inflammatory pathogenesis. Medicinal herbs and secondary metabolites are gaining considerable attention due to their potential therapeutic role and pharmacological mechanisms as adjunct tools to synthetic bronchodilator drugs. PURPOSE To systematically review the literature on the use of single or mixed plants extracts therapy in vivo experimental systems for asthma, emphasizing their regulations on IL production to improve lung. METHODS Literature searches were performed on PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus and Web of Science databases. All articles in English were extracted from 1999 up to September 2019, assessed critically for data extraction. Studies investigating the effectiveness and safety of plant extracts administered; inflammatory cell count, immunoglobulin E (IgE) production and regulation of pro-inflammatory cytokine and T helper (Th) 1 and Th2-driven cytokine expression in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and lung of asthmatic animals were included. RESULTS Four hundred and eighteen publications were identified and 51 met the inclusion criteria. Twenty-six studies described bioactive compounds from plant extracts. The most frequent immunopharmacological mechanisms described included reduction in IgE and eosinophilic recruitment, decreased mucus hypersecretion and airway hyperreactivity, enhancement of the balance of Th1/Th2 cytokine ratio, suppression of matrix metallopeptidase 9 (MMP-9) and reversal of structural alterations. CONCLUSION Plant extract therapies have potential control activities on asthma symptoms by modulating the secretion of pro-inflammatory (IL-1β, IL-8), Th17 (IL-17), anti-inflammatory (IL-10, IL-23, IL-31, IL-33), Th1 (IL-2, IL-12) and Th2 (IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-13) cytokines, reducing the level of biomarkers of airway inflammation.

Abstract
Asthma is one of the most common chronic syndromes worldwide (Moorman et al., Vital Health Stat 3(35), 2012). It is not a diagnosis but a clinical syndrome based on a constellation of signs and symptoms (Li et al., Ann Allergy Asthma Immunol 81:415–420(IIa), 1998). The classic symptoms of asthma include chest tightness, wheeze, cough, and dyspnea (Moorman et al., Vital Health Stat 3(35), 2012). The term asthma encompasses a spectrum of pulmonary diseases sharing the hallmark of reversible airway obstruction and can be classified as allergic or non-allergic (Löwhagen, J Asthma. 52(6):538–44, 2015). Asthma designated allergic is due to an immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated process, but as noted not all asthma is allergic in etiology (Romanet-Manent et al., Allergy 57:607–13, 2002). The differential diagnosis for asthma is broad and requires a detailed history with supportive pulmonary function tests to be properly diagnosed.

Abstract
Background Bu-zhong-yi-qi-tang (BZYQT), an herbal formula of traditional Chinese medicine, has been an effective regimen of allergic diseases for nearly 800 years. Our previous report has demonstrated its anti-inflammatory effects in patients with perennial allergic rhinitis, and the aim of this study is to investigate the anti-asthmatic effect of BZYQT. Methods Female BALB/cByJNarl mice were sensitized with normal saline (control group) or OVA. Mice sensitized by OVA were fed with distilled water (OVA group), oral 0.5 g/Kg (low-dose group) or 1 g/Kg (high-dose group) of BZYQT solution once daily on days 36-40 besides their routine diet. Airway hyper-responsiveness (AHR), eosinophil infiltration, levels of cytokines and total immunoglobulin E (IgE) in broncho-alveolar lavage fluid (BALF) were determined. The lungs and tracheas were removed, and histopathologic examination was subsequently performed. Results AHR was significantly reduced in both low- and high-dose BZYQT groups compared with the OVA group after inhalation of the highest dose of methacholine (50 mg/ml). The levels of eotaxin, Th2-related cytokines (IL-4, IL-5, IL-13), IgE, and eosinophil infiltration in BALF were significantly decreased in both BZYQT groups compared with the OVA group. Histopathologic examination revealed that eosinophil infiltration of the lung and trachea tissues was remarkably attenuated in both BZYQT groups. Conclusions Oral administration of BZYQT solution may exert anti-asthmatic effect by relieving AHR in OVA-sensitized mice, which is compatible with our clinical experience. Although detailed mechanism is to be determined, we surmise that it may be correlated with the immune-modulatory effects of inhibiting Th2 responses on the basis of our limited results.

Abstract
Allergic asthma is an inflammatory disease of the airways mediated by Th2 immune responses and characterized by airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR). Fungi of the genus Ganoderma are basidiomycetes that have been used in traditional Asian medicine for centuries. We recently found that PS-F2, a polysaccharide fraction purified from the submerged culture broth of Ganoderma formosanum, stimulates the activation of dendritic cells and primes a T helper 1 (Th1)-polarized adaptive immune response. This study was designed to investigate whether the Th1 adjuvant properties of PS-F2 could suppress the development of allergic asthma in a mouse model. BALB/c mice were sensitized by repeated immunization with chicken ovalbumin (OVA) and alum, followed by intranasal challenge of OVA to induce acute asthma. PS-F2 administration during the course of OVA sensitization and challenge effectively prevented AHR development, OVA-specific IgE and IgG1 production, bronchial inflammation, and Th2 cytokine production. Our data indicate that PS-F2 has a potential to be used for the prevention of allergic asthma.
