Abstract
Background The concept of wellbeing is expansive and intricate, making it challenging to define precisely. Similarly, the instruments employed to assess wellbeing are complex and multifaceted. Therefore, it is more appropriate to refer to the notion of wellbeing as Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL), which is the central focus of many measures used to assess the feeling of wellbeing. This review aimed to identify the tools most commonly used to evaluate HRQoL in individuals with Parkinsonism-a group of movement disorders that negatively impact the quality of life due to the intricate interplay of symptoms, socio-demographic characteristics, and psychological factors. The main aim was to assess the psychometric properties of these measures in terms of validity and reliability. Methods A literature review was conducted, focusing on research related to the assessment of HRQoL in connection to symptoms of Parkinsonism. This review included all studies that examined HRQoL using evaluation scales, exams, or self-reported questionnaires. The literature review was conducted using the databases Scopus and Web of Science and the search engine PubMed to identify studies published between 1996 and 2023. Only records that assessed HRQoL in individuals with Parkinson's disease and Parkinsonism were selected for evaluation. Results A total of 393 records were examined, and eight tools were identified as the most frequently used in the evaluation of HRQoL. Discussion The results show a significant gap in knowledge regarding the latent structure and measurement invariance of HRQoL measurements, which may have a significant influence on the interpretation of test outcomes. Moreover, there is a lack of clear divergent validity between HRQoL assessments and other tests used as predictors of HRQoL. This could represent a significant limitation, affecting the construct and criterion validity of HRQoL measures.

Abstract
Parkinson's disease (PD) affects Quality of Life (QoL), since it is responsible for cognitive impairment, non-motor, and motor symptoms. Outcome measures are fundamental for evaluating treatment's effect on QoL over time. This systematic review aimed to identify the psychometric properties of PDQ-39 and PDQ-8 in the different populations in which they were validated. The electronic databases systematically searched are MEDLINE (via PubMed), CINAHL, SCOPUS, and Web of Science; the research was conducted in July 2023. The psychometric properties considered were those of the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement Instruments (COSMIN) checklist. Risk of bias was assessed using the COSMIN checklist. The search identified 1306 articles. 398 duplicates were eliminated; 908 articles were analyzed reading title and abstract; 799 were finally excluded because used PDQ-39 and PDQ-8 as outcome measures or were not dealing with psychometric properties; 66 articles were excluded after reading the full text. 43 articles were included in the review; meta-analysis showed all the Cronbach's alpha values were statistically significant for all the subscales of PDQ-39 and PDQ-8. PDQ-39 demonstrated to be a specific HRQoL questionnaire that is correlated with generic HRQoL questionnaires, in fact in many studies included in the review, correlations with SF-36 were found. In the last studies about psychometric properties of PDQ-8 emerged that it is a practical and informative instrument that can be easily used in clinical settings, especially in busy ones, but also in large-scale studies in which a brief instrument would be preferred.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Device-aided therapy (DAT) is an established treatment for improving the quality of life (QOL) in individuals with advanced Parkinson's disease (APD). Criteria for starting DAT, including motor and non-motor symptoms, have been proposed. However, it remains unclear whether QOL differences among patients with APD influence DAT introduction. Therefore, we aimed to investigate QOL differences between patients with and without DAT introduction. METHODS This retrospective observational cross-sectional study included 245 patients with PD who were followed up between January 1, 2020, and June 30, 2022. We defined cases that underwent DAT introduction after evaluation as "planned-DAT" and those that did not as "not-planned-DAT." We performed between-group comparisons of the PD questionnaire-39 (PDQ-39) summary index (SI) in patients with APD who met the 5-2-1 criteria (≥5 times the oral levodopa dose/day, ≥2 h of "off" symptoms/day, and ≥ 1 h of troublesome dyskinesia/day). RESULTS Seventy-nine patients met the inclusion criteria for APD (median age: 68 [61.0-73.0] years; 62.8% [N = 52] women). The PDQ-39 SI scores were higher in the planned-DAT group (N = 12) than in the not-planned-DAT group (N = 67) (29.2 [22.1-33.6] vs. 19.0 [10.3-49.6] points, P < 0.05). After propensity-score matching according to age and sex, the PDQ-39 SI scores remained higher in the planned-DAT (N = 9) than in the not-planned-DAT group (N = 18) (40.0 [25.4-60.0] vs. 18.5 [7.9-46.8] points, P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that QOL assessment using PDQ-39 can be used to identify patients eligible for DAT.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder with debilitating motor and non-motor symptoms which affect participation in meaningful occupations. Occupation-based interventions can improve participation in people with PD. Evidence for incorporating structured and intensive occupational therapy by considering the concept of responsibility is lacking for this population. This trial will compare the effects of occupation-based interventions with and without responsibility feedback and conventional interventions on participation in people with idiopathic PD. METHODS A total of 45 people with PD, between 35 and 85 years old and Hoehn and Yahr stages between I to III, will be recruited from movement disorder centers for this three-armed study. Participants will be randomized into three groups (occupation-based interventions with responsibility feedback, occupation-based interventions without responsibility feedback, and conventional interventions). All participants will receive intervention for 24 sessions during a period of 12 weeks (2 sessions per week). The primary outcome measure will be participation satisfaction. Participation frequency and restriction, self-perceived performance, performance satisfaction, motivation, volition, sense of agency, responsibility, physical activity, community integration, activities of daily living (ADL), instrumental ADL, upper extremity function, balance, fatigue, and quality of life will be measured as secondary outcome measures. All outcomes will be measured at baseline, session 9, session 17, post-intervention (week 13), and follow-up (week 25). DISCUSSION This home-based high-intensity, structured, client-centered, and occupation-based intervention will be conducted by utilizing the concept of responsibility. This proposed trial may result in enhanced participation that would benefit other motor and non-motor symptoms in people living with PD. Findings from this proposed study are expected to expand the knowledge of clinicians and help them in evidence-based decision-making processes. Abstract
Objective We aimed to assess the validity and reliability of the Persian version of the NonMotor Symptoms Scale (NMSS) in Iranian patients with PD. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted in patients with PD. After the cross-cultural adaptation of the NMSS, the acceptability, reliability, precision, and validity of the Persian NMSS were evaluated. For this purpose, in addition to NMSS, we used the following measures: Scales for Outcomes in Parkinson's Disease (SCOPA)-Autonomic (SCOPA-AUT), SCOPA-Sleep, Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI) questionnaire, Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire-8 questions (PDQ-8), SCOPA-Motor, SCOPA-Psychiatric Complications (SCOPA-PC), SCOPA-Cognition (SCOPA-COG), Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Hoehn and Yahr Staging (H and Y), and Unified Parkinson Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS). Results 186 patients were enrolled (mean age 64.46 ± 9.9 years; disease duration 5.59 ± 3.99 years; 118 (63.4%) male; mean NMSS score 52.01 ± 38.54). Neither the floor effect (2.7%) nor the ceiling effect (0.5%) was seen in NMSS total score. Cronbach's alpha of total NMSS was 0.84. The test-retest reliability was 0.93 for the NMSS total and 0.81-0.96 for domains. The standard error of measurement (SEM) was lower than half of the standard deviation for NMSS total and all domains. NMSS total showed a high correlation with UPDRS I (rs = 0.84), UPDRS II (rs = 0.58), PDQ-8 (rs = 0.61), BDI (rs = 0.71), SCOPA-sleep (rs = 0.60), and SCOPA AUT (rs = 0.66). NMSS has an acceptable discriminative validity based on disease duration and severity of disease according to H and Y staging. Conclusion The Persian NMSS is a valid and reliable measure for evaluating the burden of nonmotor symptoms in Iranian patients with PD.

Abstract
Background Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a chronic, progressive illness with a profound impact on the health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Disease-specific patient-reported HRQoL measures, such as PDQ-39 and its short version PDQ-8, are increasingly used in clinical practice to address the consequences of PD on everyday life. Due to limitations in the content, especially in non-motor symptoms and sleep disturbances of PDQ-8, PDQoL7, a 7-item, short-term, self-reported, PD-specific HRQoL questionnaire was developed. Methods A representative sample of 60 adults with idiopathic PD completed the PDQoL7 questionnaire and the existing validated PDQ-8 and EQ-5D-5L questionnaires (all in Greek). Results PDQoL7 summary index strongly correlated with PDQ-8 (rs = 0.833, P < 0.001) and EQ-5D-5L (rs = − 0.852, P < 0.001). The correlation between PDQoL7 and EQ-5D-5L was statistically significantly stronger compared to PDQ-8 and EQ-5D-5L (rs = − 0.852 vs rs = − 0.789 respectively, P < 0.001). The internal consistency of PDQoL7 was not affected by item deletion (positive item to total correlations: 0.29–0.63). No redundant items (with inter-item correlation coefficients greater than 0.80) were identified. Cronbach’s α for PDQoL7 was comparable to PDQ-8 (0.804 versus 0.799 respectively). As PDQoL7 had three-dimensional structure, omega coefficient analysis confirmed its reliability (omega total: 0.88; omega hierarchical: 0.58). Conclusions PDQoL7 is an acceptable, easy to use, valid and reliable tool for the determination of HRQoL in PD patients that is potentially more comprehensive than PDQ-8 based on the available evidence. PDQoL7 could allow for a more thorough evaluation of the impact of PD and contribute to guiding healthcare decisions. This will be confirmed in subsequent analysis on larger patient cohorts. Abstract
BACKGROUND Pain is one of the most common non-motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD). Using an appropriate and specific measuring tool would be helpful in managing the pain. King's Parkinson's disease Pain Scale (KPPS) is an instrument designed to specifically measure pain in people with PD. PURPOSE This study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the Persian version of KPPS (KPPS-P) and its cut-off points for pain severity levels. METHODS A total of 480 people with PD (with a mean (SD) age of 60.89 (10.98)) were recruited. The acceptability of KPPS-P was calculated. The structural validity and discriminant validity for different levels of pain was explored via the factor analysis, and Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC) curves, respectively. Internal consistency, test-retest, and inter-rater reliability were estimated by Cronbach's alpha and Interclass Correlation coefficient (ICC). Convergent validity was established between KPPS-P and other scales including Visual Analog Scale-Pain, Douleur Neuropathic 4, Brief Pain Inventory, Short-form McGill Pain Questionnaire-2, and Parkinson's Disease-8. RESULTS A significant floor effect was observed. The exploratory factor analysis revealed 4 factors. Cronbach's alpha and ICC values were higher than 0.80. The correlation range between KPPS-P and other scales was 0.35-0.76. Cut-off points of 0, 17, and 68 were obtained to discriminate pain severity levels between no pain, mild, moderate, and severe pain, respectively, with sensitivity and specificity above 0.80. CONCLUSION Our results indicate that the Persian version of KPPS not only has acceptable psychometric properties to assess pain in PD but also has the ability to distinguish between different levels of pain severity.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The clinical, social, and economic implications of Parkinson's disease (PD) are significant; disability occurs leading to a low quality of life (QoL). Information on the QoL of patients with PD and studies on the relationship between QoL and motor and cognitive function are necessary for both research and clinical use to make informed decisions in healthcare and rehabilitation. The aim of this study was to determine which scales are most used to assess QoL in patients with PD. AREA COVERED A literature search was conducted in MEDLINE, Scopus, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Web of Science. Two authors independently identified eligible studies based on predefined inclusion criteria and extracted the data. Study quality and the risk of bias were assessed using the COSMIN checklist. EXPERT OPINION 116 suitable studies were included, and 42 different instruments were identified. The most frequently used scales were the 39-items and 8-items Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire (PDQ-39) (PDQ-8). These findings suggest further investigation of existing PD outcome measures would benefit patients, researchers, and clinicians. Validated, universal outcome measures are required to allow comparisons across practice; therefore, we recommend that future researchers use a common set of outcome assessments based on the results of this review.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the reliability and validity of Parkinson's Disease-Cognitive Rating Scale (PD-CRS) in Iranian patients with idiopathic PD. METHODS One hundred and eighty patients with PD and 60 age-, gender-, and educational level-matched healthy individuals participated in this study. Inter-rater and test-retest reliability of the Persian version of PD-CRS was investigated in 80 patients with PD. To evaluate the construct validity of the PD-CRS, its correlation with the Scales for Outcomes in Parkinson's disease-Cognition (SCOPA-Cog), Mini-Mental State Examination, Montreal Cognitive Assessment, Clock Drawing Test, Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale-Section I, and Quick Dementia Rating System was assessed. To assess the diagnostic accuracy of the PD-CRS, patients with PD were classified as groups with normal cognitive function, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and dementia using the Clinical Dementia Rating. RESULTS Test-retest and inter-rater reliability (ICC > 0.90), as well as internal consistency (α = 0.94) of the Persian version of PD-CRS, were excellent. A high positive correlation was found between the PD-CRS and SCOPA-Cog. A cut-off point of ≤79 (sensitivity 98.15% and specificity 98.04%) and ≤62 (sensitivity 100%, and specificity 100%) on the PD-CRS total score was obtained for detecting MCI and dementia in PD patients, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The results of this study showed that the Persian version of PD-CRS is a reliable and valid measure with high sensitivity and specificity to identify MCI and dementia in patients with PD.Implications for rehabilitationThe PD-CRS has an excellent test-retest and inter-rater reliability and validity in Iranian patients with PD.The PD-CRS has high sensitivity and specificity for discriminating between different levels of cognitive impairment (i.e. no cognitive impairment, mild cognitive impairment, and dementia) in Iranian patients with PD.

Abstract
Purpose Pain is one of the nonmotor symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD) that, in order to be better managed, requires to be evaluated. Evaluations are done using pain assessment scales such as the Short-Form McGill Pain Questionnaire-2 (SF-MPQ-2). The goal of this study was to assess the psychometric properties of SF-MPQ-2 to measure pain in people with PD. Methods Four hundred and twenty-eight PD patients with a mean (SD) age of 60.11 (11.44) years were included. Accessibility was measured through floor and ceiling effects. Dimensionality was estimated by exploratory factor analysis. The association between SF-MPQ-2 and other scales such as Neuropathic Pain Symptom Inventory, Douleur Neuropathic 4, Brief Pain Inventory, King's Pain Parkinson's Disease Scale, and Visual Analog Scale-Pain was considered to calculate convergent validity. Internal consistency and test-retest reliability were assessed by Cronbach's alpha and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), respectively. Results A noticeable floor effect was found. Dimensionality results indicated four factors for this scale. A strong relationship was found between the SF-MPQ-2 total score and other scales (r = 0.55 to 0.85). In reliability analysis, Cronbach's alpha and ICC were 0.93 and 0.94 for SF-MPQ-2, respectively. Conclusion The results of this study showed that SF-MPQ-2 has adequate validity and reliability to measure pain in people with Parkinson's disease.

Abstract
Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the ability of the Quick Dementia Rating System (QDRS) to discriminate patients with PD who have mild cognitive impairment from those without cognitive impairment and those with dementia.Method: A total of 105 patients with PD were classified as without cognitive impairment (N = 32), with mild cognitive impairment (N = 23), and PDD (N = 50), according to their score on clinical dementia rating. Multivariate regression analysis was performed considering age, education, and disease severity as covariates and mild cognitive impairment or dementia as outcome variables. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was carried out to derive the optimal cut-off points.Results: The cut-off point >2.5 (sensitivity = 86.96%, area under curve (AUC) = 0.88) was obtained for discriminating patients with mild cognitive impairment from those without cognitive impairment based on the total score of QDRS. The cut-off point >5 (sensitivity = 84%, AUC = 0.84) was derived for discriminating mild cognitive impairment from dementia based on the total score of QDRS.Conclusions: The results of this study showed a good discriminative validity of the QDRS for discriminating mild cognitive impairment from no cognitive impairment and dementia in patients with PD.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONThe Quick Dementia Rating System has a good discriminative validity for diagnosing mild cognitive impairment from normal cognitive function in Parkinson's disease.The Quick Dementia Rating System has a good discriminative validity for diagnosing mild cognitive impairment from dementia in Parkinson's disease.The Quick Dementia Rating System could be suggested as a routine rapid cognitive screening tool for patients with Parkinson's disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Independence in activities of daily living (ADL) is one of the most important aspects in planning treatment for people with Parkinson disease (PD). The Barthel Index (BI) and modified Rankin Scale (mRS) are commonly used in neurological diseases. OBJECTIVE This study was conducted to confirm the validity and reliability of the BI and mRS in PD during ON and OFF medication phases. METHODS We included 260 individuals with a diagnosis of idiopathic PD. The disability in ADL was measured by the BI, mRS, Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire-39 (PDQ-39), Unified Parkinson Disease Rating Scale-Activities of Daily Living (UPDRS-ADL), and Schwab and England ADL scale (SE). Test-retest, inter-rater reliability, and internal consistency were assessed by the intra-class correlation (ICC) and Cronbach α coefficients. Dimensionality was evaluated by factor analysis. Convergent validity was assessed by the SE, Berg Balance Scale (BBS), PDQ-39 and UPDRS-ADL. RESULTS For the 260 participants (187 [71.9%] males; mean [SD] age 60.3 [12.3] years), both the BI and mRS achieved an acceptable level of test-retest and inter-rater reliability (ICC=0.77 to 0.91) in ON and OFF medication phases. The Cronbach α for BI was 0.85 and 0.88, respectively. We found 1 and 2 factors for BI in ON and OFF phases, respectively. Investigation of convergent validity showed moderate to high correlation for the BI with the UPDRS-ADL, SE, PDQ-39 (ADL), BBS and mRS scores in ON and OFF phases (ρ=0.51-0.74) and mRS with SE, UPDRS-ADL, PDQ-39 (ADL) and BBS scores (ρ=0.48-0.82). CONCLUSION The BI and mRS showed acceptable validity and reliability to measure the degree of disability in patients with PD in daily activities in both ON and OFF medication phases.

Abstract
Introduction Symptomatic control and improvement of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is a key feature of the management of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). The 39-item Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire (PDQ) and its short version, PDQ-8, validated disease-specific patient-reported instruments, have been highly recommended to use for assessing HRQoL in patients with PD. The aim of this study was to assess the reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the PDQ-8. Methods Eighty-three patients with PD were recruited for this methodological and cross-sectional study. The PDQ-8 was repeated to assess the test-retest reliability after one-week interval. The participants completed the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) as a generic HRQoL previously validated in Turkey. The Hoehn & Yahr stages of the patients were also determined. The SF-36 and Hoehn & Yahr stages were used to assess the convergent validity of the PDQ-8. Results The Cronbach's alpha coefficient was 0.78 (95% CI: 0.70-0.84, p<0.001) for PDQ-8. The test-retest reliability was very high as the intra-class correlation coefficient was 0.97 (95% CI: 0.93-0.99, p<0.001). The PDQ-8 had significant correlations with the physical and mental component scores of SF-36 (ρ=-0.52, p<0.001 and ρ=-0.64, p<0.001, respectively) and Hoehn & Yahr stages (ρ=0.56, p<0.001). There was no evidence of floor or ceiling effects. Conclusion The results of this study suggest that the Turkish version of the PDQ-8 is a reliable, valid, less time-consuming, and brief disease-specific instrument to assess HRQoL in patients with Parkinson's disease.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Using the 39-item Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire (PDQ-39) in routine care could efficiently identify symptoms that are most important to patients, but little evidence documents its use for this purpose. METHODS A quality improvement pilot project using interviews with patients, caregivers, and providers. RESULTS PDQ administration and scoring were successfully integrated into clinic workflows, and results were available for discussions during outpatient visits. Patients reported that completing the instrument helped them remember what to discuss with their provider, formulate specific questions, and identify factors affecting their quality of life. Caregivers found it useful for gaining insight into patients' daily needs. The neurologist reported it made provider-patient discussions more efficient by focusing on domains that were particularly concerning for patients. Ancillary care providers reported that PDQ-39 domain subscores efficiently provided a holistic view of patients' needs and supported setting short- and long-term goals. CONCLUSION The PDQ-39 can be integrated into a busy clinical practice and its routine use is valuable for patients, caregivers, and providers.

Abstract
Background Parkinson’s disease is characterized by motor and non-motor symptoms with wide ranging impacts on the health-related quality of life. The 39-item Parkinson’s disease Questionnaire (PDQ-39) is the most widely used PD-specific health-related quality-of-life questionnaire. The short-form 8-item Parkinson’s disease Questionnaire (PDQ-8) was found to produce results similar to that of the PDQ-39 cross-culturally. However, there is no evaluation of the PDQ-8 in the mainland of China. Methods In this longitudinal study, 283 patients with Parkinson’s disease were recruited. The PDQ-39, the PDQ-8 and other scales were administered. Patients attended the clinic once annually for three years to complete the scales. Results The PDQ-8 was found to have good validity and reliability. There was a strong correlation between the summary indices of the PDQ-8 and the PDQ-39 (r=0.93, P<0.001). Results suggested that the PDQ-8 was also associated with other clinical scales of mobility, depression and cognition. The convergent validity and discriminant validity of the PDQ-8 were demonstrated by item-to-dimension correlations. There was acceptable internal consistency of the PDQ-8 (Cronbach’s α: 0.80; Item-scale correlation efficient: 0.56–0.72). The PDQ-8 replicated the results of the PDQ-39 well at all follow-up time points (intraclass correlation coefficient: 0.96–0.98). In addition, there was good test-retest reliability of the PDQ-8. Conclusion The PDQ-8 is a valid and reliable instrument assessing health-related quality of life for PD patients in the mainland of China. Abstract
Background: Despite the negative effect of fear of falling during functioning and social participation of patients with Parkinson' disease, so far, only few studies have investigated its effect on the quality of life in these patients. We aimed to investigate the association between fear of falling and quality of life controlling for balance impairments based on hip and ankle strategy in drug On- and Off-phase of patients with idiopathic Parkinson' disease. Methods: In this non-experimental cross-sectional study, 139 patients with idiopathic Parkinson' disease (100 male, 39 female) by mean± SD age of 60.2±12.27 years, mean±SD time since diagnosis of 6.7±5.53 years and mean±SD Hoehn and Yahr stage of 2.8±1.49 were selected by a simple non-probability method. Balance function was measured by a functional reach test with hip and ankle strategy. The Persian version of the selfcompleted Fall Efficacy Scale-International and Parkinson's disease quality of life questionnaire was used to evaluate fear of falling and quality of life, respectively. Results: The results showed that the score of all dimensions of quality of life (i.e., mobility, activities of daily living, emotional wellbeing, stigma, social support, cognition, communication and bodily discomfort) were significantly affected by the intensity of fear of falling. Multiple regression analysis indicated a significant association between fear of falling and quality of life in a way that fear of falling explained 11% to 47% and 12% to 43% of variance in drug On-phase, as well as 8% to 45% and 9% to 48% of variance in the drug Off-phase in dimensions of quality of life after controlling for balance function based on hip and ankle strategy, respectively. In the drug On-phase, the strongest association (R=0.85, p<0.001) was found between fear of falling and mobility dimension of quality of life. In the drug Off-phase, the strongest relation was observed between fear of falling and mobility (R=0.82, p<0.001) as well as activities of daily living (R=0.78-0.79, p<0.001) dimensions. Conclusion: This study found that fear of falling affects the quality of life of patients with Parkinson' disease beyond its relationship with balance impairments based on the hip and ankle strategy in both drug On- and Off-phase.

Abstract
Among chronic neurodegenerative disorders, Parkinson's disease (PD) is one of the most difficult and challenging to tackle as several motor and nonmotor features influence the patients' quality of life (QoL) and daily activities. Assessing patients QoL with valid instruments and gathering knowledge about the determinants that affect QoL in individuals with PD are the basis of an efficient caring strategy. In addition to the known motor symptoms, nonmotor disorders must also be comprehensively tracked and targeted for treatment to enhance QoL. A holistic strategy to maintain QoL in people with PD should consist of a multidisciplinary, personalized and patient-centered approach with timely administration of palliative care and efficient involvement of caregivers and family members.

Abstract
The impact of Parkinson's disease (PD) on psychological status and quality of life (QoL) may vary depending on age of disease onset. The aim of this study was to compare psychological symptoms and disease-specific QoL between early onset versus the rest of the PD patients. A total number of 140 PD patients with the mean current age of 61.3 (SD = 10.4) yr were recruited in this study. PD patients with the onset age of ≤50 yr were defined as “early-onset” (EOPD) group (n = 45), while the ones with >50 yr at the time of diagnosis were categorized as the “typical-onset” (TOPD) patients (n = 95). Different questionnaires and scales were used for between-group comparisons including PDQ39, HADS (hospital anxiety and depression scale), FSS (fatigue severity scale), MNA (mininutritional assessment), and the UPDRS. Depression score was significantly higher in EOPD group (6.3 (SD = 4.5) versus 4.5 (SD = 4.2), P = 0.02). Among different domains of QoL, emotion score was also significantly higher in the EOPD group (32.3 (SD = 21.6) versus 24.4 (SD = 22.7), P = 0.05). Our findings showed more severe depression and more impaired emotional domain of QoL in early-onset PD patients. Depression and anxiety play an important role to worsen QoL among both EOPD and TOPD patients, while no interaction was observed in the efficacy of these two psychiatric symptoms and the onset age of PD patients.
