Abstract
This paper examines the ecological association of dietary food intake with mental health outcomes on the group level across countries. Published data from the World Mental Health Survey were used to compare lifetime prevalence of four categories of mental health disorders (anxiety disorders, mood disorders, impulse control disorders, and substance use disorders) with a country’s fish/seafood and sugar/sweetener supply quantity using the Spearman rank correlation. Data were compared for 17 countries across the world. Sugar and sweetener supply quantity was significantly and positively associated with anxiety disorders (rho = 0.75, p = 0.001), mood disorders (rho = 0.75, p = 0.001), impulse control disorders (rho = 0.78, p = 0.001), and substance use disorders (rho = 0.68, p = 0.007). Fish and seafood supply quantity had no significant association with any mental health disorders. Mental health disorders represent a significant health problem around the world. Public health measures aimed at improving the quality and availability of a nation’s food supply could have a significant positive impact on mental health. Further randomized studies are needed to further validate the study findings.

Abstract
Nutrition is an integral component to any athletes training and performance program. In adults the balance between energy intake and energy demands is crucial in training, recovery, and performance. In young athletes the demands for training and performance remain but should be a secondary focus behind the demands associated with maintaining the proper growth and maturation. Research interventions imposing significant physiological loads and diet manipulation are limited in youth due to the ethical considerations related to potential negative impacts on the growth and maturation processes associated with younger individuals. This necessary limitation results in practitioners providing nutritional guidance to young athletes to rely on exercise nutrition recommendations intended for adults. While many of the recommendations can appropriately be repurposed for the younger athlete attention needs to be taken towards the differences in metabolic needs and physiological differences.

Abstract
Energetic homoeostasis is a fundamental requirement in the defense against cadmium (Cd) stress. Using the freshwater crab Sinopotamon henanense as an example, we explored the effects of Cd on submicroscopic structures in hepatopancreatic cells through transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy-related parameters such as adenosine triphosphate/adenosine diphosphate (ATP/ADP) ratios, reduced/oxidized nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH/NAD(+)) ratios, and the mitochondrial membrane potential (Δψm). The impact of Cd on carbohydrate and protein metabolism, and metallothionein (MT) was also investigated. Experimental 10 day exposure increased NADH and NAD(+) and provided a higher NADH/NAD(+) ratio and Δψm in hepatopancreatic cells. The corresponding significantly increased levels of ATP and the ATP/ADP ratio in the hepatopancreas supported high energy production. The up-regulation of the MT content in exposed crabs suggests that protein synthesis for detoxification could partially be a major ATP consumer. With increasing exposure time, however, energy production was in decline. Excessive energy consumption was explained by substrate mobilization and mitochondrial impairment. Less carbohydrate and enhanced protein catabolism was observed. Ultrastructurally, there were changes in mitochondria with swelling, membrane disruption, shortening of cristae or the rupture and disappearance of entire mitochondria. The rough endoplasmic reticulum (rER) displayed expansion and membrane rupture, suggesting the destruction of protein-synthesizing structures in hepatopancreatic cells. Our findings suggest that energy-related parameters could be used as biomarkers in the monitoring of metal pollution and quantitative risk assessments of pollutant exposure.
