Investigation of chemical transformations of thiophenylglycoside of muramyl dipeptide on the fumed silica surface using TPD-MS, FTIR spectroscopy and ES IT MS

Spectral Features Differentiate Aging-Induced Changes in Parchment-A Combined Approach of UV/VIS, µ-ATR/FTIR and µ-Raman Spectroscopy with Multivariate Data Analysis

From the moment of production, artworks are constantly exposed to changing environmental factors potentially inducing degradation. Therefore, detailed knowledge of natural degradation phenomena is essential for proper damage assessment and preservation. With special focus on written cultural heritage, we present a study on the degradation of sheep parchment employing accelerated aging with light (295-3000 nm) for one month, 30/50/80% relative humidity (RH) and 50 ppm sulfur dioxide with 30/50/80%RH for one week. UV/VIS spectroscopy detected changes in the sample surface appearance, showing browning after light-aging and increased brightness after SO₂-aging. Band deconvolution of ATR/FTIR and Raman spectra and factor analysis of mixed data (FAMD) revealed characteristic changes of the main parchment components. Spectral features for degradation-induced structural changes of collagen and lipids turned out to be different for the employed aging parameters. All aging conditions induced denaturation (of different degrees) indicated by changes in the secondary structure of collagen. Light treatment resulted in the most pronounced changes for collagen fibrils in addition to backbone cleavage and side chain oxidations. Additional increased disorder for lipids was observed. Despite shorter exposure times, SO₂-aging led to a weakening of protein structures induced by transitions of stabilizing disulfide bonds and side chain oxidations.

Study on the interaction of Hericium erinaceus mycelium polysaccharides and its degradation products with food additive silica nanoparticles

Gastric mucosal injury is a common gastrointestinal disorder. Hericium erinaceus polysaccharide, the major active ingredient in Hericium erinaceus, can reduce gastric mucosal damage to some extent. In this study, two different products HMP-Vc and HMP-Ce were obtained by Vitamin C and cellulase degradation of Hericium erinaceus mycelium polysaccharide (HMP). The gastroprotective activity of polysaccharides and its interaction products with food additives silica nanoparticles (nSiO₂) were studied in GES-1 cells. It was found that gastroprotective activity of HMP was significantly higher than that of degradation products, and the addition of nSiO₂ could enhance this activity of HMP. The greatest difference between the degradation products and HMP was the reduction of the triple helix structure, which might be the reason of the gastroprotective activity was less than that of HMP. Moreover, nSiO₂ might interact with HMP through hydrogen bonding to enhance its activity.

Mummified embalmed head skin: SR-FTIR microspectroscopic exploration

This case report details the examination of the skin of an Egyptian mummified head with a possible skin disorder. The head, thought to be dated in the first half of the 18th Dynasty, New Kingdom (1570-1400 BCE) belongs to the Museum of Forensic Anthropology, University of Madrid. Initial histological examination demonstrated evidence of chronic inflammation, which was confirmed by immunohistochemistry and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). However, confirmation of pathology could be confounded by both the age of the specimen and the process of preservation by mummification. In this case report, Synchrotron Radiation Fourier Transform Microspectroscopy (SR-µFTIR) was used to add novel insights into embalmed mummified tissue. More precisely, FTIR is used for the first time on the specific specimens, while no other similar studies have been performed on these samples priorly. Additionally, modern skin tissue was examined too, in order to compare the amount of degradation to the mummified one. Whilst the FTIR results confirmed the results from the initial histological study, they also showed a biochemical modification of the mummified skin that could be indicative of tissue degradation. The latter was supported by comparing it to FTIR results of the modern tissue used.

Hexagonal Mesoporous Silica-Supported Copper Oxide (CuO/HMS) Catalyst: Synthesis of Primary Amides from Aldehydes in Aqueous Medium

Hexagonal mesoporous silica (HMS)-supported copper oxides (CuO/HMS) have been prepared by a sol-gel method and characterized by X-ray diffraction, FTIR spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, N₂ sorption, inductively coupled plasma (ICP), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), H₂ temperature-programed reduction (TPR), NH₃ temperature-programed desorption (TPD), and high-resolution (HR)-TEM techniques. An analysis of these results revealed a mesoporous material system with a high surface area (974 m²  g^-1 ) and uniform pore-size distribution. The catalytic efficacy of CuO on the HMS support with varying Cu loadings (1, 3, 5, 10, and 15 wt %) was investigated for the transformation of aldehydes to primary amides; 3 wt % CuO/HMS exhibited good catalytic performance with good to excellent yields of amides (60-92 %) in benign aqueous medium. The intrinsically heterogeneous catalyst could be recovered after the reaction and reused without any noticeable loss in activity.
