Abstract
Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans is a rare, locally aggressive, slowly growing cutaneous fibroblastic sarcoma with a high recurrence rate and low metastatic potential. Atrophic dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans is a rare variant usually presents as atrophic plaques, easily neglected and misdiagnosed as benign lesions by patients and dermatologists. Here we report two cases of atrophic dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans, one of which was accompanied by pigment, and review other cases have been reported in the literature. Understanding the most up-to-date literature and early identification of these dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans variants can help clinicians avoid delayed diagnosis and improve prognosis.

Abstract
Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a rare, locally aggressive spindle cell mesenchymal tumor arising in the dermis, with low metastatic potential. The most commonly affected sites are the trunk and proximal extremities; rarely are acral sites involved. Atrophic DFSP is a rare form of DFSP, that is morphologically different but histologically similar to DFSP. It commonly affects young adults between the ages of 20 to 50 years. The current management strategy for atrophic DFSP is surgical excision with long-term follow-up to detect any recurrence. Only one known case of atrophic DFSP with eosinophilic infiltration is what makes our case an exceptionally rare presentation.

Abstract
We present a case series of atrophic dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) to further characterise its clinical and pathological features. Sixteen cases were enrolled in the study. There were five males and 11 females with a median age of 28 years. The vast majority occurred in the trunk (12/16, 75%), whereas a minority involved the upper limb or limb gird (2/16, 12.5%), and head and neck region (2/16, 12.5%). The most common presentation was a depressed plaque-like lesion with a greyish-red to purplish-blue colour. Histologically, the lesion was dermal-based consisting of monomorphous spindle cells arranged in parallel fascicles with focal areas displaying storiform architecture. In addition, one case showed remarkable hyalinisation of the matrix, two cases contained scattered pigmented dendritic cells and one case had admixed giant cell fibroblastoma-like component, respectively. The diagnosis was confirmed by immunohistochemical study, and by further fluorescence in situ hybridisation analysis in six cases. Follow-up thus far has revealed a relatively low rate of local recurrence (1/10, 10%). Familiarity with the distinctive clinical and pathological features of atrophic DFSP helps avoid misdiagnosis. Like a classical DFSP, morphological variants can also occur in an atrophic DFSP, including pigmented, sclerosing and hybrid subtypes, albeit rare.

Abstract
Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans is an uncommon neoplasm that is most often seen in young adults. The most common clinical presentation is the protruding form; however, other subtypes are known, such as the atrophic. In 2012 there were only 33 reports of this variant in the literature. Many cases of Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans in children are only discovered in adulthood because they were not diagnosed early. Due the high morbidity, we raise the need for attention from the dermatologist to recognize uncommon neoplasms in the clinical practice. We report a case of a 15-year-old patient diagnosed with atrophic Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans on the back.

Abstract
Background Atrophic variant of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a distinct form of DFSP. Case presentation Here, we report the case of a 19-year-old woman with a small congenital atrophic plaque on the right precordium. The lesion remained atrophic for more than 10 years. Several years earlier, a portion of the plaque became tuberous and enlarged. Physical examination revealed a 25 × 30 mm erythematous atrophic plaque surrounded by three hard, smooth, and orange-colored nodules of varying sizes on the right precordium, along with visible subcutaneous adipose tissue and cutaneous veins. Biopsy of the nodule and atrophic plaque revealed dense proliferation of spindle-shaped tumor cells from the dermis to the subcutaneous adipose tissue, and positive immunostaining for CD34 and vimentin in addition to negative staining for factor XIIIa and α-smooth muscle actin. Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) of the tumor tissue revealed the presence of a COL1A1-PDGFB fusion gene. Thus, congenital atrophic dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans was diagnosed. No metastasis to the lungs or regional lymph nodes was found on magnetic resonance imaging. Wide local excision and split-thickness skin grafting was performed and neither recurrence nor metastasis has been observed for 5 years and 8 months since the surgery. Conclusion This case indicates that a congenital atrophic lesion could represent a quiescent phase of DFSP. Awareness of this rare condition can aid with early diagnosis and thereby improve the prognosis of DFSP.

Abstract
The present study describes a case of pit-like dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) with the clinical manifestations, histopathological features and criteria for diagnosis. The study also reviews the relevant literature in order to raise awareness among dermatologists with regard to the specific behavior of DFSP. A 27-year-old female presented with subcutaneous nodules on the left side of the neck that had been apparent for 5 years and which had gradually begun caving in during the last year. Histopathological examination revealed that the tumor was composed of a large number of spindle cells arranged in a whirlpool-like pattern. Immunohistochemical studies revealed positive staining for cluster of differentiation 34, vimentin and lysozyme, which could be used as diagnostic markers of DFSP. The patient was finally diagnosed with DFSP by pathological and immunohistochemical analyses. The DFSP was treated with an extended resection followed by adjacent skin repair. The patient responded well and no relapse occurred during the 8-month clinical follow-up. Thus, the current study describes a unique pit-like clinical manifestation of DFSP with typical immunohistochemical and pathological features. In addition, histopathological examination revealed a downward depression in the epidermis. Therefore, histopathological examination should be considered as an essential diagnostic tool for DFSP.

Abstract
Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSPs) is an uncommon dermal tumor of intermediate to low-grade malignancy. A few patients have clinically persistent plaques that might be atrophic, and they are difficult to be diagnosed clinically. With the development of cytogenetic and molecular biology techniques, the detection of fusion transcripts of the collagen type 1a1 (COL1A1) and platelet-derived growth factor-BB (PDGFB) genes has been recognized as a reliable and valuable molecular tool for the diagnosis of DFSPs. We reported a 24-year-old woman who had a 2 years history of atrophic DFSPs, and detected the gene fusion between COL1A1 to PDGFB by one-step method of RT-PCR using only a single primer pair. The gene fusion detected by this rapid and efficient one-step method in our patient appears to be the first report of atrophic DFSPs, and we detected a novel COL1A1 breakpoint between exon 2 and exon 3.

Abstract
Canine Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumors (MPNSTs) are uncommonly reported in the ulnar, since they are underestimated relative to the more common spindle cell tumours of soft tissue. In dogs, MPNST accounts for 27% of nervous system tumours. In man, MPNST represents 5-10% of all soft tissue sarcomas and is often associated with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1).An 8-year-old, 9 kg, female mixed-breed dog with a subcutaneous mass on the upper right side of the ulnar region was presented to the small animal research and teaching hospital of Tehran University. The dog was anorexic with general weakness. The mass (7 × 4 cm) was removed surgically and processed routinely. Microscopically, the mass was composed of highly cellular areas with a homogeneous population of round or spindle cells, high cellular pleomorphism, high mitotic index and various morphologic patterns. Furthermore, spindle cells arranged in densely or loosely sweeping fascicles, interlacing whorls, or storiform patterns together with wavy cytoplasm, nuclear palisades, and round cells were arranged in sheets or cords with a meshwork of intratumoral nerve fibers. In addition, in this case the presence of neoplastic cells within the blood vessels was observed. Immunohistochemically, tumor was positive for vimentin and S-100 protein. The histopathologic features coupled with the S-100 and vimentin immunoreactivity led to a diagnosis of malignant neurofibroma. To the best of our knowledge, primary ulnar MPNST has not been reported in animals. This is the first documentation of an ulnar malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour in a dog.
