Abstract
Unicystic ameloblastoma (UAM) of the jaw can be effectively reduced in volume through decompression, which promotes bone regeneration and restores jaw symmetry. This study quantitatively evaluated changes in mandible volume and symmetry following decompression of mandibular UAM. This study included 17 patients who underwent surgical decompression followed by second-stage curettage for mandibular UAM. Preoperative and postoperative three-dimensional computed tomography (CT) images were collected. Bone volume and the area of cortical perforation were measured to assess bone growth during decompression. Mandibular volumetric symmetry was analyzed by calculating the volumetric ratio of the two sides of the mandible. Twelve pairs of landmarks were identified on the surface of the lesion regions, and their coordinates were used to calculate the mean asymmetry index (AI) of the mandible. Paired t-tests and the Mann-Whitney U test were used for statistical analysis, with p < 0.05 considered indicative of statistical significance. The mean duration of decompression was 9.41 ± 3.28 months. The mean bone volume increased by 8.07 ± 2.41%, and cortical perforation recovery was 71.97 ± 14.99%. The volumetric symmetry of the mandible improved significantly (p < 0.05), and a statistically significant decrease in AI was observed (p < 0.05). In conclusion, UAM decompression enhances bone growth and symmetry recovery of the mandible. The present evaluation technique is clinically useful for quantitatively assessing mandibular asymmetry.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) encompass pain and dysfunction in the jaw, muscles, and adjacent structures. This study aimed to explore the quantitative (condylar position, morphology) and qualitative (bone mineral density (BMD)) therapeutic outcomes following a stabilization splint (S.S.) therapy in adult patients diagnosed with TMD (Arthralgia) with/without lateral mandibular asymmetry (MA) using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). METHODS In this retrospective clinical study, 60 adult TMD patients who received S.S. therapy were enrolled and allocated into the TMD group (TMDG) and TMD with MA group (TMD + MAG). The diagnosis was made according to the Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (DC/TMD) AXIS I. MA was measured from the mid-sagittal plane to the Menton point. CBCT was used to scan the temporomandibular joints pre- (T0) and post- (T1)-treatment for three-dimensional analysis. Intra- and intergroup statistical comparisons were performed using the Wilcoxon signed ranks and the Kruskal‒Wallis test. RESULTS For quantitative comparisons, there was a statistically significant difference between T0 and T1 in the joint spaces of TMD + MAG (anterior, superior, posterior, and coronal lateral on the deviated side as well as in the superior, coronal medial joint space of the contralateral side). Morphologically, the deviated side had a narrower condylar width, reduced condylar height, and a steeper eminence angle. In contrast, the contralateral side tended to have a greater condylar length. For qualitative measurements, BMD also showed statistical significance between T0 and T1 in the majority of the condyle slopes (AS, SS, PS, and LS on the deviated side and in AS and MS on the contralateral side) of TMD + MAG. Additionally, only the AS and PS showed significance in TMDG. CONCLUSION Multiple joint space widening (AJS and CMS) and narrowing (SJS, PJS, and CLS) could characterize the deviated side in TMD + MA. Factors like narrower condylar width, reduced condylar height, and steeper eminence angle on the deviated side can worsen TMD + MA. Proper alignment of the condyle-disc position is essential for optimal function and load distribution, potentially affecting bone mineral density (BMD). MA plays a prominent role in disturbing bone densities. S.S. therapy shows more evident outcomes in TMD + MAG (on the deviated side compared to the contralateral side) than the TMDG.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the correlation between mandibular deviation (MD) and possible clinical factors in patients with anterior disc displacement (ADD). This retrospective clinical study enrolled 296 patients with ADD, diagnosed using magnetic resonance imaging, from 2015 to 2018. The clinical symptoms and medical histories of these patients were carefully examined and recorded. Mandibular deviation was the primary outcome variable confirmed by a combination of clinical examination and facial photographs or posteroanterior cephalograms. The primary predictor variable was ADD staging. Secondary predictor variables included condylar height and distance of disc displacement. Other predictor variables were age, sex, disease course, oral parafunctions, depression, and bone mineral density. We used logistic regression to examine the correlation between the MD and all predictor variables. The χ2 test and analysis of variance were used to exclude the correlation between the predictor variables. In this study, the prevalence of MD was 77% among 278 patients with ADD. Bilateral ADD staging significantly contributed to MD on both sides. The odds ratio increased with the deterioration of disc displacement. The present study demonstrated that the ADD staging influences the condylar height and MD, and that articular disk position should be considered while treating MD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the relationship between the volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD), the thickness of the condylar cortex (Tcortex) and the hemimandibular volumes (Vhemimandible) of symmetrical and asymmetrical mandibles of children. DESIGN The data collection consisted of 92 archeological skeletal remains of children's mandibles between 1 and 12 years old. The mandibles were digitalized with a computed tomography (CT) scan, and three dimensional models were obtained. Vhemimandible was calculated using the optimal symmetry plane. The volumes were used to calculate the asymmetry index (AI). Mandibles with an AI of ≥ 3% (N = 9) and a sample of the most symmetrical mandibles (N = 9) were selected for this research. Three groups were created: a symmetrical, an asymmetrical and a pooled group. Micro-CT was used to measure the vBMD and Tcortex in four volumes of interest. The AI was calculated for these parameters as well. RESULTS Significant correlations were found between the vBMD and the Tcortex in the pooled group (P < .01) and between the AI of the vBMD and the AI of the Tcortex in the pooled (P < .01) and symmetrical group (P < .05). No significant correlations were found between the vBMD and the Vhemimandible and between the respective AIs. Between the Tcortex and the Vhemimandible a significant correlation was found in the pooled and asymmetrical group. CONCLUSION There is a relationship between the vBMD and the Tcortex. The correlations between the Tcortex and the Vhemimandible are insufficient to draw firm conclusions. A relationship between the vBMD and Vhemimandible was not confirmed in this study.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We evaluated the effect of mandibular asymmetry on the trabecular structure of the mandible as measured through fractal analysis (FA). STUDY DESIGN We divided a sample of 105 patients with skeletal class I occlusion, cervical vertebral maturation CS6, and skeletal vertical dimension ratios within normal limits into right asymmetric, left asymmetric, and symmetric groups. We performed FA on 6 bilateral regions of interest on panoramic radiographs of the patients and calculated the mean fractal dimension (FD) for each region. We performed the Wilcoxon signed-rank and paired t tests to compare the significance of differences in FD between sides within each group and between groups for all regions. Statistical significance was established at P < .05. RESULTS We found statistically significant differences in mean FD values between the right and left condyles of the 2 asymmetric patient groups. The FD was greater in the left condyle of patients with right asymmetry and in the right condyle of patients with left asymmetry. The right condyle had a significantly greater FD in left asymmetric patients than in right asymmetric patients. CONCLUSIONS The results of FA indicate that asymmetry is characterized by an increase in the mean FD of the condyle that is responsible for the asymmetry. Fractal analysis can be a valuable diagnostic technique in distinguishing trabecular differences in the condylar areas of asymmetric individuals.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Transdifferentiation of chondrocytes into bone cells explains most of the prenatal and early postnatal condylar growth, but its role during later postnatal growth and the mechanisms regulating transdifferentiation remain unknown. This study aimed to quantify the effects of mechanical loading on chondrocyte-derived osteogenesis during late postnatal condylar growth using a short-term mandibular laterotrusion model. METHODS Thirty 4-week-old Aggrecan-CreERT2, R26RtdTomato, and 2.3Col1a1-GFP compound mice received tamoxifen injections and were divided into control and experimental groups. Appliances were bonded to shift the mandibles of the experimental mice for 5 days, causing protrusion and retrusion of the right and left condyles, respectively. Radiographic, microcomputed tomographic, and histomorphometric analyses were performed. RESULTS The experimental and control groups showed substantial transdifferentiation of chondrocytes into bone cells. The experimental mice developed asymmetric mandibles, with the protrusive side significantly longer than the retrusive side. The protrusive condyles showed significantly increased chondrogenesis and greater numbers of chondrocyte-derived osteogenic cells, especially in the posterior third. The opposite effects were seen on the retrusive side. CONCLUSIONS Transdifferentiation of chondrocytes into bone cells occurs during late postnatal condylar growth. Laterotrusion regulates condylar chondrogenesis and chondrocyte transdifferentiation, which alters the amount and direction of condylar growth. Our study demonstrated that chondrocytes are key players in condylar bone formation and should be the focus of studies to control and further understand condylar growth.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate whether the morphology of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is associated with chewing patterns while considering skeletal morphology, sex, age, and symptoms of temporomandibular disorder (TMD). A cross-sectional observational study of 102 TMJs of 80 patients (age 16-40 years) was performed using pretreatment records of cone-beam computed tomography imaging of the TMJ, mandibular kinesiographic records of gum chewing, lateral and posteroanterior cephalometric radiographs, patient history, and pretreatment questionnaires. To select appropriate TMJ measurements, linear regression analyses were performed using TMJ measurements as dependent variables and chewing patterns as the independent variable with adjustment for other covariates, including Nasion-B plane (SNB) angle, Frankfort-mandibular plane angle (FMA), amount of lateral mandibular shift, sex, age, and symptoms of TMD. In multiple linear regression models adjusted for other covariates, the length of the horizontal short axis of the condyle and radius of the condyle at 135° from the medial pole were significantly (p < 0.05) associated with the chewing patterns in the frontal plane on the working side. "Non-bilateral grinding" displayed a more rounded shape of the mandibular condyle. Conversely, "bilateral grinding" exhibited a flatter shape in the anteroposterior aspect. These findings suggest that the mandibular condyle morphology might be related to skeletal and masticatory function, including chewing patterns.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study evaluated mandibular morphology and transverse dental compensation between symmetrical and asymmetrical subjects, allocated according to sagittal skeletal patterns. In addition, the hypothesis that mandibular morphology and dental compensations differed between symmetrical/asymmetrical groups and also among the different types of sagittal skeletal patterns was tested. METHODS Cone-beam computed tomography images of 96 patients were included in this study and were divided into 2 groups according to the degree of menton deviation: a symmetrical group with deviation up to 2.0 mm (n = 48; mean age, 15 ± 6 years), and an asymmetrical group with deviation from 3.5 mm (n = 48; mean age, 16 ± 8 years). The 2 groups were divided in accordance with the ANB angle: Class I, II, and III. Skeletal and dental measurements were performed. Intergroup and intragroup analyses were carried out, using a 2-way analysis of variance to assess the interaction of factors: symmetry and sagittal skeletal pattern; and the Student t test for differences between deviated (Dv) and nondeviated (NDv) sides. RESULTS Symmetrical/asymmetrical groups and Class I, II, and III groups were similar in relation to demographic aspects (P = 0.412 and P = 0.357 for sex and age, respectively). Asymmetrical patients had higher values for body length and mandibular ramus and condyle height on the NDv side (P = 0.011, P = 0.024, and P = 0.001, respectively). When comparing the different skeletal patterns, patients with a Class III relationship demonstrated higher values for mandibular ramus height. Intergroup analysis showed no differences in dental parameters. In the comparison between the sides, the asymmetrical group showed a significant difference in canine inclination (P = 0.008), mandibular ramus height (P = 0.004), condyle height (P = 0.010) and gonion to midsagittal plane distance (P = 0.018). CONCLUSIONS Asymmetrical subjects showed higher values for canine inclination and mandibular body, ramus and condylar height on the NDv side. The hypothesis was partially confirmed that mandibular morphology and dental compensations are different between symmetrical/asymmetrical groups and among different sagittal skeletal patterns.

Abstract
Objectives The aim of this study was to analyse volumetric asymmetries between the right and left condyles in relation to age, gender, and dental status. Materials and methods A retrospective analysis of 150 cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans was conducted. A single investigator performed the volumetric analysis of the CBCT scans using Vesalius 3D software. The volumetric data were analysed in relation to the gender, age, and dental status. Results The mean right condylar volume was significantly higher (P < .01) than the left condylar volume. Right and left condylar volumes were significantly higher (P < .01) in male study participants when compared to female study participants. There was no significant difference (P = .47) in the volumetric asymmetry between the male and female study participants. The volumetric asymmetry was significantly higher (P < .01) in the older age groups when compared to the younger age groups. The volumetric asymmetry was significantly higher (P < .01) in the partially and completely edentulous patients when compared to the dentate study participants. The condylar volume on the side having a partially edentulous area was significantly lower than the condylar volume of the contralateral dentate side (P < .001). Conclusions The volumetric asymmetry between the right and left condyle significantly increases with age and edentulousness. The result of the study encourages the clinicians to perform volumetric evaluation of the condyles in cases of radiographically evident condylar asymmetries to obtain a more accurate diagnosis.

Abstract
The law of minimum vertical dimension (MVD) states that “when the mandible moves to reach the maximum intercuspal position, this always involves bringing the mandible and maxilla as close together as possible.” Therefore, after the first occlusal contact is made, the MIP will be reached through reduction of the vertical dimension. Our objective of this study, through an integrative review of the literature review, was to determine whether ignoring this law is a factor that contributes to malocclusion, temporomandibular joint dysfunction, and recurrences of functional orthodontic and orthopedic treatments.We conducted a search of the literature in five of the main electronic scientific databases. The following medical subject heading terms were used in our search: centric relation, dental occlusion, malocclusion, vertical dimension, and mastication. We cross-referenced the descriptors in the following four groups: centric relation and maximum intercuspation; occlusal plane and malocclusion; neuro-occlusal rehabilitation; and vertical dimension and unilateral chewing. From this, we selected 277 potentially eligible articles. Out of these, 209 were excluded in accordance with the exclusion criteria already described. Thus, 65 studies were included in the qualitative synthesis.The articles were also classified according to their impact factor and degree of recommendation, in conformity with the table of the Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine. The scientific interest in the scope of the articles was also assessed by using three charts developed according to year and country of publication and the percentage of publication. Unilateral chewing creates a vicious cycle of damage that leads to an ever-increasing masticatory deficiency. Most of the articles chosen for this review confirmed that noncompliance with law of MVD was a predisposing factor in cases of relapse, in functional orthodontic and orthopedic treatments, as well as a causal factor in malocclusion and in functional and morphological TMJ dysfunctions.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study was aimed at evaluating the association between vertical skeletal patterns, condylar height symmetry, and temporomandibular disorders in adults. METHODS The study sample consisted of 200 patients (ages 18-30 years old) retrospectively recruited: 100 with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and 100 without TMD (control), diagnosed by Diagnostic Criteria for the Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD). For each subject, skeletal divergence was assessed on lateral cephalograms, and condylar height symmetry was evaluated by orthopantomography (Habets' method). RESULTS Subjects with temporomandibular disorders showed a strong association with condylar asymmetry (p < 0.0001) and, for the skeletal pattern variables, hyperdivergence (p < 0.001). A correlation with the female sex was also found (p < 0.04), while there was no difference in terms of age in the 2 groups (p > 0.29). CONCLUSIONS Although it does not imply a direct cause-and-effect relationship, the present study suggests condylar asymmetry and hyperdivergent skeletal pattern are more likely to be associated with a higher risk of temporomandibular disorder joint diseases in adult patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to quantify the symmetry of the facial hard tissue structures using three-dimensional radiographic imaging modalities in a normal Caucasian population group. MATERIALS AND METHODS Electronic literature search was conducted in the following databases: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library up to February 2021. The studies assessing symmetry of facial bones using computed tomography (CT) and cone beam CT were included. RESULTS The initial search revealed 8811 studies. Full-text analysis was performed on 33 studies. Only 10 studies were found eligible based on the inclusion criteria. The qualitative analysis revealed that a significant variability existed in relation to the methodologies applied for symmetry quantification. CONCLUSION The current review suggested that the overall relative symmetry of the normal Caucasian population group varied depending on the skeletal structure being assessed; however, majority of the observations showed a symmetry within the range of 1 mm without any significant difference between left and right sides. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The quantification of facial hard tissue structure symmetry is vital for the diagnosis and treatment planning of orthodontic and/or maxillofacial surgical procedures. Abstract
The mesh-to-mesh value comparison (MVC) method developed by Karell et al. (Int J Legal Med 130(5):1315-1322, 2016) facilitates the digital comparison of three-dimensional mesh geometries obtained from laser-scanned or computed tomography data of osteological materials. This method has been employed with great success to pair-matching geometries of intact skeletal antimeres, that is, left and right sides. However, as is frequently the case for archaeological materials, there are few circumstances which proffer complete skeletal remains and fewer still when considering contexts of commingling. Prior to the present research, there existed a paucity of sorting techniques for the diverse taphonomic conditions of skeletal materials found within commingled assemblages, especially regarding fragmentary remains. The present chapter details a study in which the MVC method was adapted to encompass comparisons of isolated components of bone in lieu of entire bone geometries in order to address this dearth. Using post-mortem computed tomography data from 35 individuals, three-dimensional models of 70 mandibular fossae and 69 mandibular condyles were created and then compared using Viewbox 4, to produce numerical mesh-to-mesh values which indicate the geometrical and spatial relationship between any two given models. An all-to-all comparison was used to determine if the MVC method, using an automated Trimmed Iterative Closest Point (TrICP) algorithm, could be utilized to (1) match corresponding bilateral pairs of condyles and fossae and (2) match same-sided articular correlates. The pair-matching of both the condyles and the fossae generally produced high sensitivity and specificity rates. However, the articulation results were much poorer and are not currently recommended.

Abstract
The authors analyzed the three-dimensional postoperative condylar position change across the plating systems. This retrospective study was conducted with the patients who underwent bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy with setback surgery. The condylar change was analyzed from preoperative cone-beam computed tomography to postoperative 1 month (T1) and postoperative 6 months (T2) using superimposition software, automatically merging based on the anterior cranial base. The condylar changes during T1 and T2 were analyzed across the four types of plates (4-hole sliding, heart-shaped, 3-hole sliding, and 4-hole conventional) Mean intraclass correlation coefficient values were consistently high for each measurement (>0.850). During T1, the conventional plate had a decreased condylar anterior distance when compared with the 3-hole sliding plate (P = 0.032). During T2, the conventional plate had an increased condylar posterior distance when compared with the 3-hole sliding plate (P = 0.031). Superimposition software based on the anterior cranial base could be available for measurement of condylar position with highly reproducible results. After bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy, the 3-hole sliding plate could effectively compensate for the anterior displacement of the condyle compared to other plates.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This cross-sectional comparative study investigated the effects of qat chewing habit on the radiographic bone density (RBD) and trabecular microstructure of temporomandibular joint condyles using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). STUDY DESIGN In total, 85 systemically healthy Yemeni males were included and divided into qat chewers (QCs; n = 41); and non-qat chewers (NQCs; n = 44). The participants responded to a structured questionnaire and underwent standardized clinical examination and CBCT scanning of the temporomandibular joint. Measurements of RBD and trabecular microstructure (trabecular thickness, trabecular separation, bone volume fraction, and fractal dimension) were performed. Statistical significance was established at P ≤ .05. RESULTS No statistically significant differences were found between QCs and NQCs in RBD or trabecular microstructure. The mean standard deviations and maximum values of trabecular separation on the nonchewing side for QCs were significantly lower compared to the corresponding values for NQCs (0.60 and 2.68 for QCs vs 0.72 and 3.05 for NQCs; P = .025 and .05, respectively). A comparison between chewing and nonchewing sides in QCs revealed no significant differences. CONCLUSIONS Qat chewing habit induces insignificant changes in condylar RBD and trabecular microstructure as detected by CBCT. Further studies using advanced radiographic techniques are warranted.

Abstract
Background The correlation between individuals’ condylar morphology and their skeletal pattern is of great interest for treatment strategies ranging from orthodontic orthopaedics to orthognathic surgery. The objective of the present study was to investigate this relationship three-dimensionally. Methods A total of 111 adult patients (mean age = 27.0 ± 10.2 years) who underwent head computed tomography or cone beam computed tomography scans were included. Based on these data, 3D models of the skull and the condyles were calculated. The craniofacial skeleton was evaluated (1) transversally regarding skeletal symmetry (menton deviation), (2) sagittally regarding skeletal classes (Wits appraisal) and vertically regarding the inclination of the jaws (maxillomandibular plane angle). The condylar morphology was assessed (a) linearly by the condylar width, height and depth; (b) angularly by the antero-posterior and medio-lateral condylar inclination; and (c) volumetrically by the ratio of the condylar volume/mandibular volume (C/Mand). Results (1) Transversal: Asymmetric patients showed significantly higher discrepancies in the volumetric ratio C/Mand on the deviation and non-deviation side compared to symmetric patients. (2) Sagittal: Class III subjects demonstrated longer, more voluminous condyles with higher antero-posterior and medio-lateral inclination angles compared to Class II participants. (3) Vertical: Hyperdivergent subjects had smaller condyles with higher antero-posterior inclination angles than those of hypodivergent subjects. No interactions of skeletal class and vertical relationships regarding condylar morphology were observed. Conclusions This study demonstrates a clear correlation between pronounced skeletal patterns and condylar morphology in an adult population. The description of radiographic condyle characteristics in relation to the craniofacial morphology improves orthodontic treatment planning and could be helpful in the diagnosis of temporomandibular joint pathologies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Facial allotransplantation including the temporomandibular joints may improve the functional outcomes in face transplant candidates who have lost or damaged this joint. METHODS Linear and angular measurements were taken in 100 dry skulls and mandibles and in 100 three-dimensionally-reconstructed facial computed tomographic scans to determine the variability of the temporomandibular joint, glenoid fossa, and mandible. A vascular study was performed in six fresh cadaveric heads, followed by harvest of the face allograft in three heads. Next, four heads were used for mock transplantation (two donors and two recipients). The full facial allograft included four different segments: a Le Fort III, a mandibular tooth-bearing, and two condyle and temporomandibular joint-bearing segments. Statistical analysis was performed using SAS software. RESULTS In only one-third of the skulls, the condylar shape was symmetric between right and left sides. There was a wide variability in the condylar coronal (range, 14.3 to 23.62 mm) and sagittal dimensions (range, 5.64 to 10.96 mm), medial intercondylar distance (range, 66.55 to 89.91 mm), and intercondylar angles (range, 85.27 to 166.94 degrees). This high variability persisted after stratification by sex, ethnicity, and age. The temporomandibular joint was harvested based on the branches of the superficial temporal and maxillary arteries. The design of the allograft allowed fixation of the two condyle and temporomandibular joint-bearing segments to the recipient skull base, preserving the articular disk-condyle-fossa relationship, and differences were adjusted at the bilateral sagittal split osteotomy sites. CONCLUSION Procurement and transplantation of a temporomandibular joint-containing total face allograft is technically feasible in a cadaveric model.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Craniofacial asymmetry is a common growth disorder often caused by unilateral chewing. Although an early orthodontic treatment would avoid surgical procedures later in life, the uncertainty of defining the accurate sagittal midplane potentially leads to misdiagnosis and therefore inaccurate orthodontic treatment plans. This novel study aims to 3D-diagnose craniofacial complex malformations in children with unilateral crossbite (UXB) considering a midplane which compensates the asymmetric morphology. METHODS The sagittal midplane of 20 children, fifteen of whom exhibited UXB, was computed by a PCA-based method which compensates the asymmetry mirroring the 3D models obtained from cone-beam computed tomography data. Once determined, one side of the data was mirrored using the computed midplane to visualize the malformations on the hard and soft tissues by 3D-computing the distances between both halves. Additionally, 31 skull's landmarks were manually placed in each model to study the principal variation modes and the significant differences in the group of subjects with and without UXB through PCA and Mann-Whitney U test analyses respectively. RESULTS Morphological 3D-analysis showed pronounced deformities and aesthetic implications for patients with severe asymmetry (jaw deviation > 0.8 mm) in whole craniofacial system, while initial signs of asymmetry were found indistinctly in the mandible or maxilla. We detected significant (p < 0.05) malformations for example in mandibular ramus length (0.0086), maxillary palate width (0.0481) and condylar head width (0.0408). Craniofacial malformations increased the landmarks' variability in the group of patients with UXB over the control group requiring 8 variation modes more to define 99% of the sample' variability. CONCLUSIONS Our findings demonstrated the viability of early diagnosis of craniofacial asymmetry through computing the accurate sagittal midplane which compensates the individual's asymmetrical morphology. Furthermore, this study provides important computational insights into the determination of craniofacial deformities which are caused by UXB, following some empirical findings of previous clinical studies. Hence, this computational approach can be useful for the development of new software in craniofacial surgery or for its use in biomedical research and clinical practice.

Abstract
PURPOSE Degenerative joint changes commonly affect the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and can result in chin deviation. However, the extent of degenerative TMJ changes and chin deviation has not been well-characterized. The present study sought to correlate degenerative TMJ changes with condylar volume, grayscale measures, and chin deviation. MATERIALS AND METHODS The present cross-sectional study had enrolled women with skeletal Class III malocclusion. Cone-beam computed tomography scans were acquired preoperatively. For each condyle, degenerative TMJ signs were analyzed and the condylar volume and grayscale were measured. The predictor variable was the presence of degenerative TMJ signs, classified as categorical data: 0, if none; 1, only present in 1 joint; and 2, present in both joints. The primary outcome variable was a chin deviation of 3 mm or more. Other associated variables were grouped by age, cephalometric data, and 3-dimensional condylar measurements. Descriptive bivariate statistics were computed, and univariate and multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify any associations between degenerative TMJ disease and chin deviation. RESULTS We included 85 patients, who were classified into 2 groups: less than 3 mm of chin deviation (n = 43) and 3 mm or more of chin deviation (n = 42). The presence of more than 10 degenerative TMJ signs was significantly associated with the presence of 3 mm or more of chin deviation (P < .001). In multiple regression models, the presence of subcortical sclerosis in 1 joint and in both joints (adjusted odds ratio [OR], 3.698; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.051 to 13.012; adjusted OR, 5.001; 95% CI, 1.461-17.119, respectively) correlated significantly with the presence of 3 mm or more of chin deviation (P < .05). The volume difference between the 2 condyles was significantly greater in the group with more than 10 degenerative TMJ signs and 3 mm or more of chin deviation than in the group with 10 or fewer degenerative TMJ signs and less than 3 mm of chin deviation (P = .016 and P < .001, respectively). CONCLUSIONS In women with skeletal Class III malocclusion, the presence of more than 10 degenerative TMJ signs increased the prevalence of 3 mm or more of chin deviation. The presence of subcortical sclerosis in either 1 or both joints and volume differences between the 2 condyles were associated with greater chin deviation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Although traumatic loading has been associated with periodontal ligament (PDL) damage and therefore with several oral disorders, the damage phenomena and the traumatic loads involved are still unclear. The complex composition and extremely thin size of the PDL make experimentation difficult, requiring computational studies that consider the macroscopic loading conditions, the microscopic composition and fine detailed geometry of the tissue. In this study, a new methodology to analyse the damage phenomena in the collagen network and the extracellular matrix of the PDL caused by parafunctional and traumatic occlusal forces was proposed. METHODS The entire human mandible and a portion thereof containing a full cuspid tooth were separately modelled using finite element analysis based on computed tomography and micro-computed tomography images, respectively. The first model was experimentally validated by occlusion analysis and subjected to the muscle loads produced during hard and soft chewing, traumatic cuspid occlusion, grinding, clenching, and simultaneous grinding and clenching. The occlusal forces computed by the first model were subsequently applied to the single tooth model to evaluate damage to the collagen network and the extracellular matrix of the PDL. RESULTS Early occlusal contact on the left cuspid tooth guided the mandible to the more occluded side (16.5% greater in the right side) and absorbed most of the lateral load. The intrusive occlusal loads on the posterior teeth were 0.77-13.3% greater than those on the cuspid. According to our findings, damage to the collagen network and the extracellular matrix of the PDL could occur in traumatic and grinding conditions, mainly due to fibre overstretching (>60%) and interstitial fluid overpressure (>4.7 kPa), respectively. CONCLUSIONS Our findings provide important biomechanical insights into the determination of damage mechanisms which are caused by mechanical loading and the key role of the porous-fibrous behaviour of the PDL in parafunctional and traumatic loading scenarios. Besides, the 3D loading conditions computed from occlusal contacts will help future studies in the design of new orthodontics appliances and encourage the application of computing methods in medical practice.

Abstract
Cephalometric methods have been used to evaluate morphometric measurements of the mandible and quantify sex-related anatomical features; however, most studies to date employ a limited set of location-specific measurements without considering the entire three-dimensional anatomy of the mandible. The aims of this study were to develop statistical shape models (SSMs) of partially edentulous male and female mandibles to evaluate inter-subject morphological variability and secondly to assess the effectiveness of discrete clinical morphometric measurements in prediction of complete three-dimensional mandible geometry. Computed tomography images of forty partially edentulous female and twenty-five male subjects were obtained, and SSM developed using mesh fitting, rigid body registration and principal component analysis. Analysis of female and male SSMs showed that the variation along their first principal components was size-related. Sex-differentiating pure shape variations were found along the first principal component of size-normalised SSM and were observed to be most prominent in the symphysis and posterior ramus regions of the mandible. Seven morphometric measurements were found to characterise female and male shape prediction optimally. The capability to rapidly generate accurate patient-specific shape-predictive models of the mandible may be useful for implant development and pre-operative planning, particularly in the absence of bony structures following trauma or tumour resection.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare variability, reproducibility and repeatability of four quantitative evaluation methods to interpret the 99mTc-MDP SPECT reports in patients with clinically suspected unilateral condylar hyperplasia. METHOD This was a descriptive observational study carried out with SPECT images of 38 patients with clinical and radiographic signs of unilateral condylar hyperplasia, and interpreted using four quantitative methods: 1) one image, variable-size region of interest (ROI); 2) one image, fixed-size ROI (1.76cm2), 3) five image variable-size ROI; 4) five image, fixed-size ROI (1.76cm2). Each of the images was reported simultaneously (but in an independent way) by two nuclear medicine experts, in both total radioactive counts as well as normalized counts to evaluate the reproducibility (inter-operator variability) and the repeatability (intra-operator variability). RESULTS Higher reproducibility and repeatability were obtained in 5-image fixed-size ROI method (intra-class correlation coefficient: 0.979 [0.959; 0.989]). A high grade of diagnostic agreement (97.4%) was also attained in fixed methods (Kappa 0.940, p value: .000) from either total or normalized counts. There was no difference between fixed-size 1 vs 5 image methods. The methods based on variable-size ROI had a low grade of agreement (Kappa<0.20). More positive cases were identified using one image, ROI variable total counts (27 cases), but when the counts were normalized, they presented a lower number (5 cases). CONCLUSION Five-image fixed-size ROI provides the best intra-operator and inter-operator reliability for the diagnosis of unilateral condylar hyperplasia. In the four methods using normalized counts fewer positive cases were detected (≥10%), unlike with total counts when more positive cases were found.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the morphologic similarities and differences in mandibular condyle and glenoid fossa between the deviated and non-deviated sides in patients with facial asymmetry using statistical analysis. METHODS One hundred eighty-four patients (95 men, 89 women; mean age, 22.30 ± 3.87 years) with facial asymmetry were examined with cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Shape analysis was performed to compare the shapes and sizes of the condyle and fossa between the deviated and non-deviated sides in the frontal and lateral aspects. Ordinary Procrustes analysis (OPA) was used to determine shape variations of the fossa and condyle. RESULTS Shape variations derived from ordinary sum of squares (OSS) suggested that, in the frontal aspect, there was a difference between the two sides in both the fossa and condyle (P < 0.05). In the lateral aspect, there was no difference in fossa shape between the two sides (P > 0.05); however, the shape of condyle was different between the non-deviated and deviated sides (P < 0.05). Size comparison in OPA matching and centroid size (CS) in the frontal aspect demonstrated that the non-deviated side was larger than the deviated side. In the lateral aspect, fossa showed no difference in CS between the two sides (P > 0.05); however, the non-deviated side was larger than the deviated side for condyle (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Morphometric differences in condyle and fossa between the deviated and non-deviated sides were observed. Structures of the non-deviated side were relatively larger than those of the deviated side, except for fossa in the lateral aspect.

Abstract
This study aimed to quantify the height of the mandibular condyle and ramus, condylar volume, and the asymmetry index in adult patients of different sex, skeletal class and vertical pattern using Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT), and to determine whether there were differences between these groups. The study used CBCT scans of 159 patients with a mean age of 32.32 ± 8.31 years. InVivoDental® software was used to perform both linear (condylar, ramal, and total height) and condylar volume measurements. Linear and volumetric asymmetries were calculated. There were not significant differences between right and left sides. The mean value obtained for condyle height was 7.27 mm, ramus height 42.3 mm, total height 49.6 mm and condyle volume 1907.1 mm3, with significant differences between men and women. Significantly higher values were found for condylar volume in hypodivergent patterns (p = 0.001) and for the asymmetry index of the condylar volume in Class II patients (p < 0.05). The prevalence of relevant asymmetry was high for condyle height and volume (73.1% y 75.6% respectively). Higher height and volume values were found among men, Class III, and hypodivergent patients. Linear and volumetric asymmetries were more prevalent among men, Class III and hyperdivergent patterns.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Our objective was to analyze the characteristics that affect skeletal Class I adults with mandibular asymmetries using cone-beam computerized tomography. METHODS The sample included cone-beam computerized tomography images of 120 subjects. Asymmetry was determined by the deviation of gnathion from the midsagittal plane and classified as relative symmetry, moderate asymmetry, or severe asymmetry. Maxillary and mandibular measurements were made, and the differences between the contralateral side and the deviated side were evaluated, as well as the differences between the categories of asymmetry. RESULTS For patients with moderate asymmetry, there were significant differences between the contralateral and deviated sides for some measuments in the transverse and vertical planes. For those with severe asymmetry, statistically significant differences were found between the sides for all measurements, except for the measuments that evaluated the position of the mandibular condyle in the transverse and sagittal directions. Furthermore, a strong correlation was found in patients with severe asymmetry, between the deviation of the mandibular dental midline and the lateral displacement of gnathion. CONCLUSIONS Patients with relative symmetry had a bilateral balance, whereas those with moderate and severe asymmetries showed several skeletal imbalances. A great deviation of the mandibular dental midline may indicate severe skeletal asymmetry in Class I adults.

Abstract
Background: Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) includes symptoms of pain and dysfunction in the muscles of mastication and the temporomandibular joint. Differences in vertical condylar height, observed in the assessment of mandibular asymmetry, is a structural alteration that represents a risk factor for TMD. The study aimed to evaluate the association between TMD symptoms and vertical mandibular symmetry in young adult orthodontic patients in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Methods: The cross-sectional study included 18-25-year-old (mean ± SD, 21.9 ± 2.0 years) old orthodontic patients admitted to the Dental Hospital of Universitas Sumatera Utara, Medan, between June 2016 and March 2017. Vertical mandibular asymmetry was assessed from all 106 subjects using Kjellberg's technique from pre-treatment panoramic radiographs. The TMD symptoms were assessed by structural interviews using modified questionnaires based on Temporomandibular Disorder Diagnostic Index and Fonseca's Anamnestic Index. Results: Of the 106 subjects, 26 (24.5% of the total) with vertical mandibular symmetry and 39 (36.8%) with vertical mandibular asymmetry were positive for TMD symptoms. By contrast, 17 patients (16.0% of the total) with vertical condylar symmetry and 24 patients (22.6%) with vertical mandibular asymmetry were regarded negative for TMD symptoms. There was no significant difference (p=0.520) in TMD symptoms based on vertical mandibular symmetry. Conclusion: The results from this studied Sumatran population indicate that there are common TMD symptoms in young adult orthodontic patients, but there is no significant association between vertical mandibular asymmetry and TMD symptoms. Further study on the development of TMD, mandibular asymmetry and treatment planning for growing patients is suggested, using longitudinal and transitional approaches.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to demonstrate that asymmetry is a natural occurring phenomenon in the mandibular shape by using elliptical Fourier analysis. METHODS 164 digital orthopantomographs from Colombian patients of both sexes aged 18 to 25 years were collected. Curves from left and right hemimandible were digitized. An elliptical Fourier analysis was performed with 20 harmonics. In the general sexual dimorphism a principal component analysis (PCA) and a hotelling T2 from the multivariate warp space were employed. Exploratory analysis of general asymmetry and sexual dimorphism by side was made with a Procrustes Fit. A non-parametric multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was applied to assess differentiation of skeletal classes of each hemimandible, and a Procrustes analysis of variance (ANOVA) was applied to search any relation between skeletal class and side in both sexes. RESULTS Significant values were found in general asymmetry, general sexual dimorphism, in dimorphism by side (p < 0.0001), asymmetry by sex, and differences between Class I, II, and III (p < 0.005). However, a relation of skeletal classes and side was not found. CONCLUSIONS The mandibular asymmetry by shape is present in all patients and should not be articulated exclusively to pathological processes, therefore, along with sexual dimorphism and differences between skeletal classes must be taken into account for improving mandibular prediction systems.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the skeletal and dental characteristics in skeletal class III patients with facial asymmetry and to analyse the relationships among various parts of the stomatognathic system to provide a theoretical basis for clinical practice. METHODS Asymmetric cone-beam computed tomography data acquired from 56 patients were evaluated using Mimics 10.0 and 3-Matic software. Skeletal and dental measurements were performed to assess the three-dimensional differences between two sides. Pearson correlation analysis was used to determine the correlations among measurements. RESULTS Linear measurements, such as ramal height, mandible body length, ramal height above the sigmoid notch (RHASN), maxillary height, condylar height, buccal and total cancellous bone thickness, and measurements of condylar size, were significantly larger on the nondeviated side than on the deviated side (P < 0.05). Crown root ratio and buccolingual angle of mandibular first molar were found to be significantly smaller on the nondeviated side than on the deviated side (P < 0.05). A negative correlation was also discovered between the buccolingual angle of mandibular first molar and the ramal height (P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS In patients with facial asymmetry, asymmetries in the mandible, maxilla and condylar morphology, and skeletal canting served as major components of skeletal asymmetry. Furthermore, a reduced thickness of buccal cancellous bone and a larger crown root ratio were found on the deviated side, indicating that orthodontic camouflage has limitations and potential risks. A combination of orthodontics and orthognathic surgery may be the advisable choice in patients with a menton deviation greater than 4 mm. An important association between vertical skeletal disharmony and dental compensation was also observed.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between bilateral differences of upper airway and mandibular morphologic patterns in subjects with skeletal Class III mandibular deviation. 47 skeletal Class III (ANB < 0°) adult patients with and without mandibular deviation were divided into 2 groups. Bilateral differences of minimum cross-sectional area, mean cross-sectional area, volume of subdivisions (nasopharynx, palatopharynx, glossopharynx, hypopharynx) were assessed paired t test. Stepwise linear regression analysis and Pearson correlation coefficients were computed between a significant pair of upper airway variables and a pair of mandibular deviation variables to examine the quantitative relationship between the upper airway asymmetry and mandibular deviation. The mean cross-sectional area and the volume of palatopharynx on the deviated side in mandibular deviated group was significantly smaller than non-deviated side. The asymmetry index of the palatopharyngeal volume showed significant correlations with CRA asymmetry (r = 0.49) and Ramus asymmetry (r = 0.54). However, in the glossopharyngeal and hypopharyngeal segment, the mandibular deviated group showed significant asymmetry, characterized by larger mean cross-sectional area and volume in deviated side. The asymmetry index of the glossopharyngeal volume and hypopharyngeal volume showed significant correlations with CRA asymmetry (r = 0.42), Me-s (r = 0.72) and Me-s (r = 0.67) respectively.

Abstract
PURPOSE Three-dimensional quantification of asymmetry in UCH has not been reported yet, but would be useful for diagnosing and evaluating the degree of deformity in this disease. It enables profound decision-making and timing of surgery. Unilateral condylar hyperplasia (UCH) can subjectively be classified in hemimandibular elongation (HE), hemimandibular hyperplasia (HH) and a combination of these two (hybrid form). The main purpose of this study was to quantify mandibular asymmetry in UCH patients with a reliable and reproducible method. Secondly, it was evaluated whether the existing classification can be confirmed. MATERIALS AND METHODS 37 UCH-patients with progressive mandibular asymmetry, supported by a positive bone scan and/or such clinical progression that condylectomy was performed, were included in this retrospective study. A group of healthy subjects, matched for age and gender, was used as the control group. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans were imported in Maxilim® software. Each mandibular half was divided into three skeletal segments (condyle, ramus, and body). Linear and volumetric measurements were calculated for these skeletal units on the affected and unaffected side, for both patients and controls. RESULTS Significant differences between affected and unaffected sides in the patient group were found in condylar, ramus, and body segments for linear (p < 0.01) as well as for volumetric quantitative measurements (p < 0.0040). A mean linear difference between affected and unaffected sides in the condylar region of the UCH patient group was found of 3.6 mm (sd 2.9) versus 0.2 mm (sd 1.5) in controls. For volumetric measurements there was a mean difference between the left and right condyle of 718 mm3 (sd 638) in the patient group versus 8 mm3 (sd 225) difference in the control group. The condyle was the most affected segment. Differences between sides were significantly larger in the patient group than in the control group (p < 0.001). It was not possible to objectify differences between HE and HH. CONCLUSION CBCT is a useful and accurate modality for quantification and evaluation of mandibular asymmetry in UCH. It enables objective monitoring. The existing classification in HE and HH could not be confirmed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the volume and position of the temporomandibular joint structures, specifically the glenoid fossa and the condylar head, in patients with facial asymmetry. STUDY DESIGN Fifty-six adult patients were divided into two groups-asymmetry group and control group-based on the severity of the mandibular asymmetry, as seen on their orthopantomograms. The volumes and positions of the bilateral temporomandibular joint components were measured by using computed tomography images and a three-dimensional analysis program. Each of the variables was compared between and within the groups. RESULTS The volumes of the condyle and the glenoid fossa on the side of the smaller condyle were significantly smaller in the asymmetry group (P < .05) than in the control group. The volumetric ratios of the glenoid fossa and the joint space to the condyle were also significantly higher on that side (P < .001). The distance of the uppermost point of the glenoid fossa from the midaxial plane in the smaller condyle was significantly shorter (P < .05) only in the asymmetry group. CONCLUSIONS When evaluating mandibular asymmetry, the volume of the glenoid fossa and the volume and vertical position of the condylar head need to be considered in addition to length or width of the condylar head.

Abstract
Purpose Facial asymmetry often persists even after mandibular deviation corrected by the bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (BSSRO) operation, since the reference facial sagittal plane for the asymmetry analysis is usually set up before the mandibular menton (Me) point correction. Our aim is to develop a predictive and quantitative method to assess the true asymmetry of the mandible after a midline correction performed by a virtual BSSRO, and to verify its availability by evaluation of the post-surgical improvement. Patients and Methods A retrospective cohort study was conducted at the Hospital of Stomatology, Sun Yat-sen University (China) of patients with pure hemi-mandibular elongation (HE) from September 2010 through May 2014. Mandibular models were reconstructed from CBCT images of patients with pre-surgical orthodontic treatment. After mandibular de-rotation and midline alignment with virtual BSSRO, the elongation hemi-mandible was virtually mirrored along the facial sagittal plane. The residual asymmetry, defined as the superimposition and boolean operation of the mirrored elongation side on the normal side, was calculated, including the volumetric differences and the length of transversal and vertical asymmetry discrepancy. For more specific evaluation, both sides of the hemi-mandible were divided into the symphysis and parasymphysis (SP), mandibular body (MB), and mandibular angle (MA) regions. Other clinical variables include deviation of Me point, dental midline and molar relationship. The measurement of volumetric discrepancy between the two sides of post-surgical hemi-mandible were also calculated to verify the availability of virtual surgery. Paired t-tests were computed and the P value was set at .05. Results This study included 45 patients. The volume differences were 407.8±64.8 mm3, 2139.1±72.5 mm3, and 422.5±36.9 mm3; residual average transversal discrepancy, 1.9 mm, 1.0 mm, and 2.2 mm; average vertical discrepancy, 1.1 mm, 2.2 mm, and 2.2 mm (before virtual surgery). The post-surgical volumetric measurement showed no statistical differences between bilateral mandibular regions. Conclusions Mandibular asymmetry persists after Me point correction. A 3D quantification of mandibular residual asymmetry after Me point correction and mandible de-rotation with virtual BSSRO sets up a true reference mirror plane for comprehensive asymmetry assessment of bilateral mandibular structure, thereby providing an accurate guidance for orthognathic surgical planning.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate sequential images of the condylar position in relation to the glenoid fossa after orthognathic surgery in patients with facial asymmetry using cone beam computed tomography. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 20 adult patients (11 men and 9 women; mean age, 22.1 ± 4.02 years) with facial asymmetry who underwent sagittal split ramus osteotomy with rigid fixation were involved. Cone beam computed tomography scans were obtained before treatment (T0), 1 month before the surgery (T1), and 1 day (T2), 3 months (T3), 6 months (T4), and 12 months (T5) after the surgery. The condyle position was evaluated. RESULTS At 1 day after surgery (T2), the condylar position on both sides significantly changed posteriorly, inferiorly, and laterally, but no significant difference was observed between the nonaffected and affected sides. The condyle on the nonaffected side had a tendency to recover its preoperative position at 3 months after surgery (T3) and inclined slightly laterally up to 1 year after the surgery (T5). The condyle on the affected side returned more closely to the glenoid fossa than to its pretreatment position at 3 months after surgery (T3). Thereafter, it showed a more backward and downward position (T5). CONCLUSIONS The overall condylar position after an orthognathic surgery in patients with facial asymmetry was relatively stable at 1 year after surgery. However, the condyle on the affected side during the first 3 months after surgery should be carefully monitored for surgical stability.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed at using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) to study the influence ofprolonged unilateral posterior teeth loss on bilateral condylar morphology. METHODS The CBCT images of 30 patients withprolonged unilateral posterior teeth loss and 30 healthy people as controls were corrected. Mimics 15.0 software was used tomeasure volume, area, distance, and bone density of condyle. The results were statistically analyzed. RESULTS The volumeand bone density of condylar head and the entire condyle on missing teeth side were less than the contralateral side (P<0.05).The area and bone density of condylar transverse plane were greater than the contralateral side (P<0.05). CONCLUSION After prolonged unilateral posterior teeth loss, adaptive reconstruction occurs in the bilateral condyles, and condyle of missing teethside is smaller than the contralateral side.
