Effect of pre-conceptional nutrition and season on fetal growth during early pregnancy in sheep

Gestational age in sheep can be closely predicted through ultrasonographic measurement of fetal bones when correlated to standardized fetal growth curves. However, these standardized curves do not account for factors that are known modulators of fetal growth, such as maternal nutrition or health status. Despite being seasonal breeders, and studies reporting an effect of season on birth weight, the influence of season on fetal growth has not been well characterized. In this study, we hypothesized that season of conception will affect fetal growth curves during mid-gestation and that pre-conceptional nutrition would have no effect. We investigated this by provisioning treatments of low, control, and high planes of nutrition during the lactation and flushing pre-conceptional periods to multiparous Dorset x Polypay and Dorset ewes over two seasons (the optimal breeding season [n = 97] and the suboptimal breeding season [n = 104]). Females were mated naturally with mating dates recorded, fetal biparietal diameter measured via ultrasound between gestational days 35-71, and newborn weights recorded at lambing. Pre-conceptional nutritional treatments did not affect fetal biparietal diameter. However, low vs. high nutrition in the pre-conceptional lactation (but not flushing) period resulted in reduced lamb birth weights (P < 0.001). Early fetal growth tended to be faster in the suboptimal breeding season than in the optimal breeding season (P < 0.061) with lambs being heavier at birth in the optimal breeding season (P < 0.001). There was no effect of fetal sex or litter size on fetal biparietal diameter during the first half of pregnancy, however both sex and litter size influenced lamb birth weight (P < 0.001) with males being heavier than females and singletons being heavier than twins and triplets. Mating date within the flushing period had a significant effect on lamb birth weight regardless of season and independent of treatment, with ewes that conceived later in the flushing period having heavier lambs at birth (P = 0.007). These findings suggest that pre-conceptional under- or overnutrition resulting in substantial changes in body condition does not affect fetal growth during the first half of pregnancy. However, the reduction in lamb birth weight indicates that pre-conceptional maternal nutrition during the previous lactation period may affect fetal growth later in pregnancy.

Effect of space allowance and flooring on the behavior of pregnant ewes

Space allowance recommendations for pregnant ewes vary considerably. The aim of this experiment was to investigate the effect of space allowance and floor type on activity, lying position, displacements, and aggressive interactions in pregnant ewes. A 3 × 2 factorial experiment was conducted with space allowance (0.75, 1.50, and 2.25 m/ewe) and type of flooring (straw bedding and expanded metal flooring) as the main factors. A total of 48 pregnant ewes were randomly assigned to 6 groups with 8 ewes in each group. All groups were exposed to each treatment for 7 d. The ewes were video recorded for 24 h at the end of each treatment period and general activity, lying position in the pen, and social lying position were scored every 15 min. Displacements and aggressive interactions were scored continuously from 1030 to 1430 h. Mean lying time ( < 0.0001) and time spent lying simultaneously ( < 0.0001) increased whereas time spent eating ( < 0.001) and standing ( < 0.001) decreased when space allowance increased from 0.75 to 1.50 m/ewe. Further increasing the space allowance to 2.25 m/ewe, however, had no effect on these parameters. Sitting was observed only in the 0.75 m/ewe treatment. Type of flooring had no significant effect on general activity. Ewes in the straw bedding treatment spent more time lying in the middle of the pen than ewes on expanded metal ( < 0.0001), but space allowance had no significant effect on this parameter. The proportion of time spent lying against side walls increased ( < 0.0001) whereas the proportion of time spent lying against the back wall decreased ( < 0.0001) when the space allowance was increased. In general, the distance between the ewes when lying significantly increased when space allowance increased from 0.75 to 1.50 m/ewe. Total number of displacements when lying ( < 0.0001) and aggressive interactions when active ( < 0.001) decreased when space allowance increased from 0.75 to 1.50 m/ewe and further slightly decreased, although the decrease was significant only for displacements when lying, when space allowance increased to 2.25 m/ewe. Low-ranked ewes were not exposed to more aggressive behavior than high-ranked ewes. In conclusion, increasing space allowance from 0.75 to 1.50 m/ewe had positive effects on activity and behavior in pregnant ewes, but further increasing space allowance to 2.25 m/ewe had limited effects, as did type of flooring. Hence, recommended space allowance for pregnant ewes should not be lower than 1.50 m/ewe.

Treatment against coccidiosis in Norwegian lambs and potential risk factors for development of anticoccidial resistance-a questionnaire-based study

The objectives of this study were to investigate the use of anticoccidials in Norwegian sheep flocks and identify farms with management procedures likely to select for drug resistance. Data were obtained by a questionnaire sent to all members of the Norwegian Sheep Recording System in October 2015. The data set consisted of 1215 answers, corresponding to 8.5% of Norwegian sheep flocks. Anticoccidials were used in 82.7% of flocks. Main treatment was at turnout (38.6% of treated flocks) or 1 week after turnout (32.4%). Interestingly, clinical signs possibly related to coccidiosis were observed by almost 40% of the farmers after treatment, which might be an indication of drug resistance. Correlations between the apparently reduced anticoccidial efficacy and management conditions, such as the size of the farms, were found. From the farmers' perspective, metaphylactic treatment was used in 88.5% of treated flocks, of which approximately one third had no history of clinical coccidiosis. Even though farmers seem aware of the importance of good drenching routines based on reliable estimates of weights and calibration of drench guns, drench gun used for anticoccidial administration was never calibrated in 12.1% of the flocks. Finally, dose estimation was made by visual appraisal in 27.5% of the flocks, which can lead to incorrect dosing. Based on the present study, it cannot be determined whether the apparent treatment failure was related to management practises, incorrect administration of the drug, other infections or actual anticoccidial drug resistance.

Results of an online questionnaire to survey calf management practices on dairy cattle breeding farms in Austria and to estimate differences in disease incidences depending on farm structure and management practices

Background

Calf disease may result in great economic losses. To implement prevention strategies it is important to gain information on management and to point out risk factors. The objective of this internet based survey was to describe calf management practices on registered dairy breeding farms in Austria and to estimate differences in calf disease incidences depending on farm structure and management practices.

Results

A total of 1287 questionnaires were finally analysed (response rate 12.2 %). Herd characteristics and regional distribution of farms indicated that this survey gives a good overview on calf management practices on registered dairy farms in Austria. The median number of cows per farm was 20 (interquartile range 13–30). Significant differences regarding farm characteristics and calf management between small and large farms (≤20 vs >20 cows) were present. Only 2.8 % of farmers tested first colostrum quality by use of a hydrometer. Storing frozen colostrum was more prevalent on large farms (80.8 vs 64.2 %). On 85.1 % of the farms, whole milk, including waste milk, was fed to the calves. Milk replacer and waste milk were more often used on large farms. In accordance with similar studies from other countries, calf diarrhoea was indicated as the most prevalent disease. Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that herd size was associated with calf diarrhoea and calf respiratory tract disease, with higher risk of disease on large farms. Furthermore, feeding waste milk to the calves was associated with increasing calf diarrhoea incidence on farm. In the final model with calf respiratory tract disease as outcome, respondents from organic farms reported less often a respiratory tract disease incidence of over 10 % compared with conventional farms [odds ratio (OR) 0.40, 95 % confidence interval (CI) 0.21–0.75] and farmers that housed calves individually or in groups after birth significantly reported more often to have an incidence of respiratory tract disease >10 % compared with farms where all calves were housed individually (OR 2.28, 95 % CI 1.16–4.48).

Conclusion

The results obtained in this study provide an overview on calf management on dairy breeding farms in Austria and may help to further point out areas to be improved on farm.
