Abstract
The microbiome has shown a correlation with the diet and lifestyle of each population in health and disease, the ability to communicate at the cellular level with the host through innate and adaptative immune receptors, and therefore an important role in modulating inflammatory process related to the establishment and progression of cancer. The oral cavity is one of the most important interaction windows between the human body and the environment, allowing the entry of an important number of microorganisms and their passage across the gastrointestinal tract and lungs. In this review, the contribution of the microbiome network to the establishment of systemic diseases like cancer is analyzed through their synergistic interactions and bidirectional crosstalk in the oral-gut-lung axis as well as its communication with the host cells. Moreover, the impact of the characteristic microbiota of each population in the formation of the multiomics molecular metafirm of the oral-gut-lung axis is also analyzed through state-of-the-art sequencing techniques, which allow a global study of the molecular processes involved of the flow of the microbiota environmental signals through cancer-related cells and its relationship with the establishment of the transcription factor network responsible for the control of regulatory processes involved with tumorigenesis.

Abstract
Chronic nasal carriage of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is a risk factor for relapse of granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), and genetic susceptibility to infections and autoimmune diseases is majorly affected by HLA genes. Previous studies have shown the association of HLA Class-II genes with GPA susceptibility. Here, we aim to assess immune responses of GPA patients against S. aureus antigens in relation to the HLA-DR-DQ genes polymorphism to determine the disease outcome. A total of 45 GPA patients and 128 healthy controls during 2010-2012 were included in this case-control study. HLA-DRB1/DQB1 allele typing was performed by polymerase chain reaction-sequence-specific primer (PCR-SSP) method. Immune responses against S. aureus antigens were investigated in 20 active vs. remitting GPA (after 6 months of cyclophosphamide and glucocorticoids) patients by Western blot. Statistical analysis was performed using χ2 test and Fisher's exact test. We observed a significant association of DRB1*08, DRB1*16 and DQB1*04 alleles with GPA susceptibility, whereas DRB1*15, DRB1*10 and DQB1*05 alleles were suggested as protective alleles. Among S. aureus antigens, active GPA patients' sera reacted more strongly with 34 and 24 kDa antigens of S. aureus than remitting and healthy control sera. Furthermore, we observed that the lack of DQB1*06 allele confers complete remission even in the presence of anti-S. aureus antibodies against 24 kDa protein. Our findings suggest that the presence of DQB1*06 allele and S. aureus infection may prolong active disease. Further, our study indicates the potential of using anti-staphylococcal medications for achieving remission in patients having HLA-DQB1*06 allele.

Abstract
BACKGROUND End-stage renal disease (ESRD), the last stage of chronic renal failure, is a global health problem. The number of ESRD patients worldwide is increasing faster than the number of kidneys available per year for renal transplantation. Most of the ESRD patients are awaiting renal transplantation. The immune response to the transplanted kidney is directed mainly against mismatched human leukocyte antigen (HLA) glycoproteins expressed on donor tissues. Thus, the analysis of HLA allele and haplotype polymorphisms is valuable not only for identifying ESRD susceptibility factors but also to improve graft survival. METHODS In this study, 163 Han ESRD patients were recruited to participate. The blood samples were genotyped by sequence-specific oligonucleotide method. A group of 14,529 healthy Chinese Han individuals registered at the Dalian Blood Center as bone marrow donors, living in the same region and of the same ethnicity, were used as controls. RESULTS We found that only one allele, HLA-DRB1*12, showed a positive association with ESRD (p = 0.004, pc = 0.028, odds ratio = 1.530, 95% confidence interval = 1.147-2.041); A*02-B*40-DRB1*09, A*02-B*40-DRB1*12, A*24-B*15-DRB1*12, and B*40-DRB1*12 were significantly more frequent in ESRD patients after Bonferroni correction (pc < 0.05). CONCLUSION They were potentially valuable predictors for evaluating the risk of ESRD in the Dalian Han population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The nasal cavity is the main colonization site of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) in human body. Nasal carriage may be a strong risk factor for some serious infection. There was still limited information about the nasal carriage for S. aureus in south China. METHODS Sought to determine the prevalence and molecular characteristics of S. aureus nasal carriage, 295 volunteers residing on a medicine campus were investigated and sampled the nasal cavity swab. Selected S. aureus isolates were carried through molecular analysis, including pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), multilocus sequence analysis, staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) and virulence gene detection. RESULTS A total of 73 S. aureus isolates were recovered from separate subjects (24.7%, 73/295), with one methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) isolate (0.3%, 1/295). Among the 73 isolates, 71 isolates were successfully grouped into 13 pulsotypes by PFGE analysis, with profiles A and L the most prevalent; 12 sequence types (STs) were found among the 23 isolates which had similar drug resistant spectrum. ST59, ST188 and ST1 were the most prevalent, accounting for 17.4, 13.0 and 13.0% of all isolates, respectively. The MRSA isolate presented ST8-SCCmec III. 56.5% of isolates carried both the staphylococcal enterotoxin A (sea) and enterotoxin B (seb) genes. 83.6% of the S. aureus isolates were resistant to penicillin, all isolates were susceptible to quinupristin/dalfopristin, levofloxacin, teicoplanin and vancomycin. The most common risk factors for S. aureus carriage were being male, age ≤30 years, and nasal cavity cleaning habits. CONCLUSIONS Colonization by S. aureus was greater among male and young age (20-30 years) students and those with irregularity nasal cleaning. The S. aureus isolates selected were revealed into various sequence types and pulsotypes, indicating molecular heterogeneity among S. aureus isolates from the populations in the medical college in Guangzhou.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Very few studies have examined the diversity of human leukocyte antigens (HLA) in the Brazilian renal transplant candidates. METHODS The frequencies of the HLA-A, HLA-B, and HLA-DRB1 alleles, haplotypes and phenotypes were studied in 522 patients with chronic renal failure, renal transplant candidates, registered at the Transplant Centers in north/northwestern Paraná State, southern Brazil. Patients were classified according to the ethnic group (319 whites [Caucasians], 134 mestizos [mixed race descendants of Europeans, Africans, and Amerindians; browns or "pardos"] and 69 blacks). The HLA typing was performed by the polymerase chain reaction sequence-specific oligonucleotide method (PCR-SSO), combined with Luminex technology. RESULTS In the analysis of the total samples, 20 HLA-A, 32 HLA-B, and 13 HLA-DRB1 allele groups were identified. The most frequent allele groups for each HLA locus were HLA-A*02 (25.4%), HLA-B*44 (10.9%), and HLA-DRB1*13 (13.9%). The most frequent haplotypes were HLA-A*01-B*08-DRB1*03 (2.3%), A*02-B*44-DRB1*07 (1.2%), and A*03-B*07-DRB1*11 (1.0%). Significant differences (P < 0.05) were observed in the HLA-A*68, B*08, and B*58 allele frequencies among ethnic groups. CONCLUSIONS This study provides the first data on the HLA-A, HLA-B, and HLA-DRB1 allele, phenotype and haplotype frequencies of renal transplant candidates in a population in southern Brazil.

Factors associated with Staphylococcus aureus nasal carriage among healthy people in Northern China. Clin Microbiol Infect 2014; 21:157-62. Abstract
There is still limited knowledge about the prevalence and risk factors of nasal carriage for Staphylococcus aureus among healthy carriers in China. We investigated 2448 healthy adults (≥18 years of age) from Beijing (n = 1530) and Harbin (n = 918) by nasal screening. Participants were checked for carriage of S. aureus, and health-related and demographic information between 2009 and 2011 was gathered. A total of 403 S. aureus (403/2448, 16.5%) were recovered, 8 of which were methicillin resistant (8/2448, 0.33%). Three factors were independently associated with S. aureus nasal carriage: Harbin as city of residence (odds ratio (OR) = 2.0, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.41 to 2.85), age ≤24 years (OR = 1.77, 95% CI = 1.30-2.44) and non-Han ethnicity (OR = 1.58, 95% CI = 1.05 to 2.38). On the basis of population genetic analysis using multiple locus variable number of tandem repeats analysis (MLVA) and spa typing, MLVA complex (MC) 398 and MC5a were the most prevalent clonal lineages in this collection. In multivariate models, residing in Harbin (OR = 1.77, 95% CI = 1.07-2.92) and having household members in the healthcare profession (OR = 3.69, 95% CI = 1.14-11.92) were factors associated with carriage of clonal lineage MC398. On the other hand, female sex (OR = 3.15, 95% CI = 1.35-7.33) and a history of chronic liver disease (OR = 16.93, 95% CI = 2.91-98.59) were associated with the clonal lineage MC5a. The three most common spa types were t571 (10.9%), t189 (9.9%) and t701 (7.2%). These findings provide insight into the determinants of nasal carriage and ecology for some of the most successful strains of S. aureus among healthy people in Northern China.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (CNS) is the most frequent cause of peritoneal dialysis (PD)-related peritonitis in many centers. This study aimed to describe clinical and microbiologic characteristics of 115 CNS episodes and to determine factors influencing the outcome. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, & MEASUREMENTS This study reviewed the records of 115 CNS peritonitis episodes that occurred in 74 patients between 1994 and 2011 at a single university center. Peritonitis incidences were calculated for three consecutive 6-year periods (P1, 1994-1999; P2, 2000-2005; P3, 2006-2011) and annually. The production of biofilms, enzymes, and toxins was evaluated. Oxacillin resistance was evaluated based on its minimum inhibitory concentration and the presence of the mecA gene. RESULTS The overall incidence of CNS peritonitis was 0.15 episodes per patient per year and did not vary over time (0.12, 0.14, and 0.16 for P1, P2, and P3, respectively; P=0.21). The oxacillin resistance rate was 69.6%. Toxin and enzyme production was infrequent and 36.5% of CNS strains presented the gene encoding biofilm production. The presence of icaAD genes associated with biofilm production was predictive of relapses or repeat episodes (odds ratio [OR], 2.82; 95% confidence interval [95% CI], 1.11 to 7.19; P=0.03). Overall, 70 episodes (60.9%) resolved; oxacillin susceptibility (OR, 4.41; 95% CI, 1.48 to 13.17; P=0.01) and vancomycin use as the first treatment (OR, 22.27; 95% CI, 6.16 to 80.53; P<0.001) were the only independent predictors of resolution. CONCLUSIONS Oxacillin resistance and vancomycin use as the first treatment strongly influence the resolution rate in CNS peritonitis, which reinforces the validity of the International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis guidelines on monitoring bacterial resistance to define protocols for initial treatment. These results also suggest that the presence of biofilm is a potential cause of repeat peritonitis episodes.

Abstract
We investigated the polymorphism of human leukocyte antigens (HLA) and Duffy erythrocyte antigens in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients in southern Brazil. One hundred and eighty-three CKD patients, over 18 years old, on hemodialysis, were included. HLA-A, -B and -DRB1 typing was performed using the LABType®SSO (One Lambda, Inc.). Duffy phenotypes were determined by gel column agglutination using anti-Fya and anti-Fyb monoclonal anti-sera. The patients' predominant ages ranged between 51 and 70 years (43%) and the predominant gender, ethnic group and dialysis period were, respectively, male (62%), white (62%) and 1–3 years (40%). The highest and lowest frequencies of Duffy phenotypes were Fy(a+b+) and Fy(a−b−), respectively. Nineteen HLA-A, 30 HLA-B and 13 HLA-DRB1 allele groups were identified. The most frequent HLA allele groups were HLA-A*01, -A*02, -A*03, -A*11, -A*24; HLA-B*07, -B*15, -B*35, -B*44, -B*51; HLA-DRB1*03, -DRB1*04, -DRB1*07, -DRB1*11 and -DRB1*13. Statistically significant differences were observed in the Duffy and HLA polymorphisms compared between CKD patients and healthy subjects. The Fy(a+b−) phenotype (p<0.0001, OR = 2.56, 95% CI = 1.60–4.07) was the most frequent in the patients (p<0.05), and the Fy(a+b+) phenotype (p = 0.0039, OR = 1.71, 95% CI = 1.18–2.51) was the most frequent in the healthy subjects in the same region of Paraná state (p<0.05). Regarding HLA, the HLA-B*42, -B*45, -B*51 and -DRB1*03 allele groups were the most frequent in the patients (p<0.05), and the HLA-B*44 allele group was the most frequent in the healthy subjects in the same region of Brazil (p<0.05). The polymorphism of these two markers among CKD patients in southern Brazil and healthy subjects of other studies, suggests that these markers might be involved with CKD development. Further studies should be undertaken to analyze the markers' influence on CKD and the long-term results from kidney transplantation.
