Strain Localization in Thin Films of Bi(Fe,Mn)O3 Due to the Formation of Stepped Mn(4+)-Rich Antiphase Boundaries

Stereointerface Structure Drives Ferroelectricity in BaZrO3 Films

Interfacial strain engineering can induce structural transformation and introduce new physical properties into materials, which is an effective method to prepare new multifunctional materials. However, interfacial strain has a limited spatial impact size. For example, in 2D thin films, the critical thickness of biaxial strain is typically less than 20 nm, which is not conducive to the maintenance of a strained structure and properties in thick film materials. The construction of a 3D interface can solve this problem. The large lattice mismatch between the BaZrO3 thin film and the substrate can induce the out-of-phase boundary (OPB) structure, which can extend along the thickness direction with the stacking of atoms. The lattice distortion at the OPB structure can provide a clamping effect for each layer of atoms, thus expanding the spatial influence range of biaxial strain. As a result, the uniform in-plane strain distribution and strain-induced ferroelectricity (Pr = 13 μC/cm2) are maintained along the thickness direction in BaZrO3 films.

Study on Ca Segregation toward an Epitaxial Interface between Bismuth Ferrite and Strontium Titanate

Segregation is a crucial phenomenon, which has to be considered in functional material design. Segregation processes in perovskite oxides have been the subject of ongoing scientific interest, since they can lead to a modification of properties and a loss of functionality. Many studies in oxide thin films have focused on segregation toward the surface using a variety of surface-sensitive analysis techniques. In contrast, here we report a Ca segregation toward an in-plane compressively strained heterostructure interface in a Ca- and Mn-codoped bismuth ferrite film. We are using advanced transmission electron microscopy techniques, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Ca segregation is found to trigger atomic and electronic structure changes at the interface. This includes the reduction of the interface strain according to the Ca concentration gradient, interplanar spacing variations, and oxygen vacancies at the interface. The experimental results are supported by DFT calculations, which explore two segregation scenarios, i.e., one without oxygen vacancies and Fe oxidation from 3+ to 4+ and one with vacancies for charge compensation. Comparison with electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) measurements confirms the second segregation scenario with vacancy formation. The findings contribute to the understanding of segregation and indicate promising effects of a Ca-rich buffer layer in this heterostructure system.

Designing antiphase boundaries by atomic control of heterointerfaces

Extended defects are known to have critical influences in achieving desired material performance. However, the nature of extended defect generation is highly elusive due to the presence of multiple nucleation mechanisms with close energetics. A strategy to design extended defects in a simple and clean way is thus highly desirable to advance the understanding of their role, improve material quality, and serve as a unique playground to discover new phenomena. In this work, we report an approach to create planar extended defects-antiphase boundaries (APB) -with well-defined origins via the combination of advanced growth, atomic-resolved electron microscopy, first-principals calculations, and defect theory. In La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 thin film grown on Sr2RuO4 substrate, APBs in the film naturally nucleate at the step on the substrate/film interface. For a single step, the generated APBs tend to be nearly perpendicular to the interface and propragate toward the film surface. Interestingly, when two steps are close to each other, two corresponding APBs communicate and merge together, forming a unique triangle-shaped defect domain boundary. Such behavior has been ascribed, in general, to the minimization of the surface energy of the APB. Atomic-resolved electron microscopy shows that these APBs have an intriguing antipolar structure phase, thus having the potential as a general recipe to achieve ferroelectric-like domain walls for high-density nonvolatile memory.

Giant Ferroelectric Polarization in Ultrathin Ferroelectrics via Boundary-Condition Engineering

Tailoring and enhancing the functional properties of materials at reduced dimension is critical for continuous advancement of modern electronic devices. Here, the discovery of local surface induced giant spontaneous polarization in ultrathin BiFeO₃ ferroelectric films is reported. Using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy, it is found that the spontaneous polarization in a 2 nm-thick ultrathin BiFeO₃ film is abnormally increased up to ≈90-100 µC cm^-2 in the out-of-plane direction and a peculiar rumpled nanodomain structure with very large variation in c/a ratios, which is analogous to morphotropic phase boundaries (MPBs), is formed. By a combination of density functional theory and phase-field calculations, it is shown that it is the unique single atomic Bi₂ O_3-x layer at the surface that leads to the enhanced polarization and appearance of the MPB-like nanodomain structure. This finding clearly demonstrates a novel route to the enhanced functional properties in the material system with reduced dimension via engineering the surface boundary conditions.
