Triphenylphosphine-based functional porous polymer as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for the synthesis of cyclic carbonates from CO2

Microbial multidrug resistance presents a real problem to human health. Therefore, water-soluble polymers based on poly(aspartate-co-succinimide) were synthesized via reaction of poly(aspartate-co-succinimide) with bis-quaternary ammonium or quaternary salts. The resultant copolymers were characterized by various techniques such as FTIR, TGA, ¹HNMR, ¹³CNMR and elemental microanalysis. Antimicrobial activities of the new onium salts were investigated against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Salmonella typhi, and the fungi; Candida albicans,Aspergillus niger, Cryptococcus neoformans and Aspergillus flavus by agar diffusion method. Antimicrobial activity was studied in terms of inhibition zone diameters, in addition to the estimation of minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the prepared compounds. A. niger and E. coli were the most affected microorganisms among the tested microorganisms with an inhibition zone of 19-21 (mm) in case of biocides, (V) and (VII). The obtained results showed that the quaternary onium salts have higher activity compared to the aspartate copolymer with MIC concentrations of 25 mg/mL for (VII) and (V) and 50 mg/mL for (VI) and (IV).

Boronate Covalent and Hybrid Organic Frameworks Featuring PIII and P=O Lewis Base Sites

Two covalent organic frameworks comprising Lewis basic PIII centers and Lewis acidic boron atoms were prepared by poly-condensation reactions of newly obtained tris(4-diisopropoxyborylphenyl)phosphine with 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene and 2,3,6,7-tetrahydroxy-9,10-dimethylanthracene. Obtained materials exhibit significant sorption of dihydrogen (100 cm3  g-1 at 1 bar at 77 K), methane (20 cm3  g-1 at 1 bar at 273 K) and carbon dioxide (50 cm3  g-1 at 1 bar at 273 K). They were exploited as solid-state ligands for coordination of Pd0 centers. Alternatively, in a bottom-up approach, boronated phosphine was treated with Pd2 dba3 and poly-condensated, yielding hybrid materials where the polymer networks are formed by means of covalent boronate linkages and coordination P-Pd bonds. In addition, the analogous materials based on phosphine oxide were synthesized. The DFT calculations on framework-guest interactions revealed that the behavior of adjacent boron and phosphorus/phosphine oxide centers is reminiscent of that found in Frustrated Lewis Pairs and may improve sorption of selected molecules.

Catalytic Conversion of Carbon Dioxide Using Binuclear Double-Stranded Helicates: Cyclic Carbonate from Epoxides and Diol

The construction of sophisticated molecular architectures from chemical subunits requires careful selection of the spacers, precise synthetic strategies, and substantial efforts. Here, we report a series of binuclear double-stranded helicates synthesized from different combinations of pyridyl hydrazone-based multidentate ligands (H₂ 1, H₂ 2, H₂ 3) by increasing the methylene spacer and transition metals (Co, Ni, and Zn). The ligands H₂ 1 (N'1,N'3-bis((E)-pyridin-2-ylmethylene)malonohydrazide), H₂ 2 (N'1,N'4-bis((E)-pyridin-2-ylmethylene)succinohydrazide), and H₂ 3 (N'1,N'5-bis((E)-pyridin-2-ylmethylene)glutarohydrazide) and their respective complexes with Co, Ni, and Zn were obtained. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies of these binuclear metallohelicates confirm the double-stranded helical structure of the complexes derived from H₂ 2. The set of helicates Co-1, Co-2, and Co-3; Ni-1, Ni-2, and Ni-3; and Zn-1, Zn-2, and Zn-3 were investigated for its catalytic activity in the cyclic carbonate formation reaction. Intriguingly, among the synthesized catalyst, Co-1 was found to be better in terms of conversions with the calculated TOF (turnover frequency) of 128/h. The catalytic performance was significantly improved by adding 0.2 mmol of tetrabutylammonium bromide by achieving 76% conversion in 30 min, with the observed TOF of 15,934 h^-1/molecule and 7967 h^-1/Co center. The results obtained herein show that the double-stranded helicates are effective catalysts for converting both terminal and non-terminal epoxides into their corresponding cyclic carbonates. The striking feature of this catalytic protocol lies in demonstrating the catalytic activity for the conversion of diol to cyclic carbonate, and the detailed kinetic experiments tempted us to propose a tentative reaction mechanism for this conversion.
