Effect of Zinc Acetate Concentration on Optimization of Photocatalytic Activity of p-Co3O4/n-ZnO Heterostructures

Zinc metal complexes synthesized by a green method as a new approach to alter the structural and optical characteristics of PVA: new field for polymer composite fabrication with controlled optical band gap

The current study employed a novel approach to design polymer composites with modified structural and declined optical band gaps. The results obtained in the present work for polymer composites can be considered an original method to make a new field for research based on green chemistry. Natural dyes extracted from green tea were mixed with hydrated zinc acetate (Zn(CH3COO)2·2H2O) to produce a metal complex. FTIR results comprehensively established the formation of the Zn-metal complex. The interaction among various components of PVA : Zn-metal complex composite was investigated using FTIR spectroscopy. The non-existence of anion bands of acetate in the Zn-metal complex spectrum confirms the formation of the Zn-metal complex. XRD analysis reveals that the Zn-metal complex improves the amorphous phase of the PVA-based composites. The absorption edge of the doped films shifted towards the lower photon energies. Optical dielectric properties were used to determine N/m*, ε ∞, τ, μ opt, ω p, and ρ opt; the W-D model was used to calculate E d, E o and n o parameters. The optical dielectric loss parameter was used to determine the optical band gap while the Tauc model was employed to identify various types of electron transitions. The optical energy band gap was 6.05 eV for clean PVA while it decreased to 1 eV for PVA inserted with the Zn-metal complex. The increase in Urbach energy from 0.26 eV to 0.45 eV is an evidence of the boost of amorphous phases in PVA : Zn-metal complex composites. The nonlinear refractive index and the first-order and second-order nonlinear optical susceptibilities were determined. The value of E o obtained from the W-D model closely matches the optical energy band gap obtained from the Tauc model, which indicates the precision of the analysis in the present study. The increase in SELF and VELF in the composite films establishes that new energy states assigned to the added Zn-metal complex amplify the probability of light-matter interaction.

Highly Stable and Efficient Oxygen Evolution Electrocatalyst Based on Co Oxides Decorated with Ultrafine Ru Nanoclusters

Exploring highly active and durable electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is significant to achieve efficient anion exchange membrane (AEM) water electrolysis. Herein, hollow Co-based N-doped porous carbon spheres decorated with ultrafine Ru nanoclusters (HS-RuCo/NC) are reported as efficient OER electrocatalysts via the pyrolysis of carboxylate-terminated polystyrene-templated bimetallic zeolite imidazolate frameworks accommodating Ru (III) ions. The unique hollow structure with hierarchically porous characteristics contributes to the electrolyte penetration for fast mass transport and the exposure of more metal sites. Theoretical and experimental studies reveal the synergistic effect between the in situ formed RuO₂ and Co₃ O₄ as another critical factor for the high OER performance, where the coupling of RuO₂ with Co₃ O₄ can optimize the electronic configuration of RuO₂ /Co₃ O₄ heterostructure and decrease the energy barrier during OER. Meanwhile, the presence of Co₃ O₄ can efficiently suppress the over-oxidation of RuO₂ , endowing the catalysts with high stability. As expected, when the resultant HS-RuCo/NC was integrated into an AEM water electrolyzer, the obtained electrolyzer exhibits a cell voltage of 2.07 V to launch the current density of 1 A cm^-2 and excellent long-term stability at 500 mA cm^-2 under room temperature in alkaline solution, outperforming the commercial RuO₂ -based AEM water electrolyzer (2.19 V).

Investigation of Ferromagnetic and Ferroelectric Properties in Binderless Cellulose/Ni Laminates for Magnetoelectric Applications

According to reported polymer-based magnetoelectric (ME) laminates, which generate voltage via an external magnetic field, a binder is indispensable for the adhesion between phases. However, if the binder is excluded, the ME response is expected to improve via efficient strain transfer from the magnetostrictive phase to the piezoelectric phase. Nevertheless, an understanding of the binderless state has not yet been addressed in polymer-based ME laminates. In this study, cellulose/Ni (CN) laminates were designed to obtain binderless polymer-based ME laminates. The surface properties of Ni foil desirable for the anchoring effect and the electrostatic interactions required for binderless states were determined via heat treatment of the Ni substrate. Moreover, to confirm the potential of the binderless laminate in ME applications, the ferromagnetic and ferroelectric properties of the CN laminates were recorded. Consequently, the CN laminates exhibited remnant and saturation magnetizations of 29.5 emu/g and 55.2 emu/g, respectively. Furthermore, the significantly increased remnant and saturation polarization of the CN laminates were determined to be 1.86 µC/cm² and 0.378 µC/cm², an increase of approximately 35-fold and 5.56-fold, respectively, compared with a neat cellulose film. The results indicate that multiferroic binderless CN laminates are excellent candidates for high-response ME applications.

Multifunctional ZnO-Co3O4 @ polymer hybrid nanocoatings with controlled adsorption, photocatalytic and anti-microbial functions for polluted water systems

Triple action pollutant responsive multi-layer hybrid nanocoatings of architecture PEI(PAA/ZnO-Co3O4)n were constructed through ZnO-Co3O4 binary oxide co-precipitation followed by its inclusion in multi-layer polymeric thin films using Layer-by-Layer (LbL) deposition. Characterization of the designed architecture was carried out via FTIR, XRD, UV-Vis, and Raman spectroscopic studies to evaluate the chemical nature, bonding, and crystallographic behavior of ZnO-Co3O4. Peaks of ZnO-Co3O4 were recorded at 586.38, 486.08, and 443.64 cm-1 while pronounced shifting of ZnO characteristic E2 (high) peak ~ 450 cm-1 and appearance of modes around 495, 530, 630, and 719 cm-1 indexed via Raman studies validated Co3O4 impregnation into ZnO structure. XRD patterns of ZnO-Co3O4 compared to their previously reported pristine structures also justified the formation of binary oxide as unit composite. SEM micrographs confirmed homogenous multi-layered depositions while EDX analysis confirmed their uniform elemental distribution in the unit structure. Sequential multi-layer buildup up to 48 layer pairs was monitored using ellipsometry with maximum film thickness ~ 89 nm and by UV-Vis at 376 nm. The prepared thin films exhibited significant photodegradation of methylene blue ~ 91% and Cu (II) adsorption capacity ~ 89% within first 90 min of contact, along with prominent bactericidal efficiency against E. coli within 24 h of reaction time. FAAS, ICP-OES, and UV-Vis spectroscopy analyses make these multifunctional hybrid nanocoatings promising for industrial wastewater as well as drinking water purification setups. Furthermore, protuberant recycling and regenerative capacity make these hybrid nanocoatings an eco-friendly system for hydro-remediation.

Influence of Temperature on ZnO/Co3O4 Nanocomposites for High Energy Storage Supercapacitors

We developed a two-step chemical bath deposition method followed by calcination for the production of ZnO/Co₃O₄ nanocomposites. In aqueous reactions, ZnO nanotubes were first densely grown on Ni foam, and then flat nanosheets of Co₃O₄ developed and formed a porous film. The aspect ratio and conductivity of the Co₃O₄ nanosheets were improved by the existence of the ZnO nanotubes, while the bath deposition from a mixture of Zn/Co precursors (one-step method) resulted in a wrinkled plate of Zn/Co oxides. As a supercapacitor electrode, the ZnO/Co₃O₄ nanosheets formed by the two-step method exhibited a high capacitance, and after being calcined at 450 °C, these nanosheets attained the highest specific capacitance (940 F g^-1) at a scan rate of 5 mV s^-1 in the cyclic voltammetry analysis. This value was significantly higher than those of single-component electrodes, Co₃O₄ (785 F g^-1) and ZnO (200 F g^-1); therefore, the presence of a synergistic effect was suggested. From the charge/discharge curves, the specific capacitance of ZnO/Co₃O₄ calcined at 450 °C was calculated to be 740 F g^-1 at a current density of 0.75 A g^-1, and 85.7% of the initial capacitance was retained after 1000 cycles. A symmetrical configuration exhibited a good cycling stability (Coulombic efficiency of 99.6% over 1000 cycles) and satisfied both the energy density (36.6 Wh kg^-1) and the power density (356 W kg^-1). Thus, the ZnO/Co₃O₄ nanocomposite prepared by this simple two-step chemical bath deposition and subsequent calcination at 450 °C is a promising material for pseudocapacitors. Furthermore, this approach can be applied to other metal oxide nanocomposites with intricate structures to extend the design possibility of active materials for electrochemical devices.

A facile mechanochemical preparation of Co3O4@g-C3N4 for application in supercapacitors and degradation of pollutants in water

Our study is aimed at synthesizing cobalt oxide (Co₃O₄) with graphite carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) to form a Co₃O₄@g-C₃N₄ hybrid through a green mechanochemical one-pot synthetic approach for manufacturing efficient supercapacitor electrodes and photocatalysts. In the present study, the Co₃O₄@g-C₃N₄ hybrid revealed a significantly higher specific capacitance (C_s) (of ~ 457.2 Fg^-1 at a current density of 1 Ag^-1) than that of the pristine Co₃O_4, which proved its pseudocapacitive behavior, with a couple of redox peaks observed in three electrode measurements (obtained by using a 3.0-M KOH aqueous electrolyte). The optimized Co₃O₄@g-C₃N₄ hybrid was further embedded for a symmetric supercapacitor performance, delivering an excellent Cs of ~ 92 Fg^-1 at a current density of 1 Ag^-1; this was supplemented with a remarkable cycling stability (~ 92% over 5000 cycles). The Co₃O₄@g-C₃N₄ hybrid was further examined for photocatalysis activity using a rhodamine B (RhB) dye, and more than 95% RhB dye was degraded through the photocatalytic reduction process (after 60 min of UV irradiation). This Co₃O₄@g-C₃N₄ hybrid catalyst exhibited excellent reusability and stability and appears to be a highly efficient, cost-effective, eco-friendly, and reusable catalyst; the g-C₃N₄ present with the Co₃O₄ acted as a conductive nano-network, leading to a higher capacitive and photocatalytic performance.

Confinedly growing and tailoring of Co3O4 clusters-WS2 nanosheets for highly efficient microwave absorption

Electromagnetic (EM) wave absorbing materials have been a research hotspot in materials science and related technical fields in recent years. Finding lightweight, efficient, and broadband electromagnetic wave absorbing materials has always been a very challenging subject. Herein, we successfully prepared Co₃O₄-WS₂ hybrid nanosheets with heterostructures, which excellent combine the advantages of magnetic property of Co₃O₄ and dielectric property of WS₂. By the electromagnetic synergy effect, maximum RL is up to -61.1 dB at 1.9 mm, and the bandwidth exceeds 5 GHz. Such highly efficient microwave absorption is attributed to not only the electromagnetic synergy effect, but the dipole polarization as well as conduction loss. These results show that the obtained Co₃O₄-WS₂ is an excellent EM wave absorbing material and can be used as a candidate for advanced EM wave absorbing materials in the fields such as commerce, military and aerospace in future.

Comparative Study of ZnO Thin Films Doped with Transition Metals (Cu and Co) for Methylene Blue Photodegradation under Visible Irradiation

We synthesized and characterized both Co-doped ZnO (ZnO:Co) and Cu-doped ZnO (ZnO:Cu) thin films. The catalysts’ synthesis was carried out by the sol–gel method while the doctor blade technique was used for thin film deposition. The physicochemical characterization of the catalysts was carried out by Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction, and diffuse reflectance measurements. The photocatalytic activity was studied under visible irradiation in aqueous solution, and kinetic parameters were determined by pseudo-first-order fitting. The Raman spectra results evinced the doping process and suggested the formation of heterojunctions for both dopants. The structural diffraction patterns indicated that the catalysts were polycrystalline and demonstrated the presence of a ZnO wurtzite crystalline phase. The SEM analysis showed that the morphological properties changed significantly, the micro-aggregates disappeared, and agglomeration was reduced after modification of ZnO. The ZnO optical bandgap (3.22 eV) reduced after the doping process, these being ZnO:Co (2.39 eV) and ZnO:Co (3.01 eV). Finally, the kinetic results of methylene blue photodegradation reached 62.6% for ZnO:Co thin films and 42.5% for ZnO:Cu thin films.

Co3O4-Ag photocatalysts for the efficient degradation of methyl orange

In this paper, a series of Co3O4-Ag photocatalysts with different Ag loadings were synthesized by facile hydrothermal and in situ photoreduction methods and fully characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, FTIR spectroscopy, XPS, UV-vis and PL techniques. The catalysts were used for the degradation of methyl orange (MO). Compared with the pure Co3O4 catalyst, the Co3O4-Ag catalysts showed better activity; among these, the Co3O4-Ag-0.3 catalyst demonstrated the most efficient activity with 96.4% degradation efficiency after 30 h UV light irradiation and high degradation efficiency of 99.1% after 6 h visible light irradiation. According to the corresponding dynamics study under UV light irradiation, the photocatalytic efficiency of Co3O4-Ag-0.3 was 2.72 times higher than that of Co3O4 under identical reaction conditions. The excellent photocatalytic activity of Co3O4-Ag can be attributed to the synergistic effect of strong absorption under UV and visible light, reduced photoelectron and hole recombination rate, and decreased band gap due to Ag doping. Additionally, a possible reaction mechanism over the Co3O4-Ag photocatalysts was proposed and explained.

Preparation, characterization and photocatalytic performance of heterostructured CuO-ZnO-loaded composite nanofiber membranes

Inorganic semiconductor oxides loaded on composite nanofibers (CNFs) have been widely applied in environmental monitoring, industry, aviation, and transportation. In this paper, heterostructured CuO-ZnO-loaded CNF membranes (CNFMs) were prepared successfully by a combination of electrospinning, heat treatment, and hydrothermal synthesis. The influence of the synthesis parameters on morphology, structure, and properties of the CNFMs was investigated, and the optimal process parameters were determined. Then, the CNFMs obtained with optimal process parameters were applied for the photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange. It was found that the CNFMs could be reused to degrade methyl orange at least three times, and the degradation rate remained above 90%.

Wafer-Scale Fabrication of Sub-10 nm TiO2-Ga2O3 n-p Heterojunctions with Efficient Photocatalytic Activity by Atomic Layer Deposition

Wafer-scale, conformal, two-dimensional (2D) TiO₂-Ga₂O₃ n-p heterostructures with a thickness of less than 10 nm were fabricated on the Si/SiO₂ substrates by the atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique for the first time with subsequent post-deposition annealing at a temperature of 250 °C. The best deposition parameters were established. The structure and morphology of 2D TiO₂-Ga₂O₃ n-p heterostructures were characterized by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), etc. 2D TiO₂-Ga₂O₃ n-p heterostructures demonstrated efficient photocatalytic activity towards methyl orange (MO) degradation at the UV light (λ = 254 nm) irradiation. The improvement of TiO₂-Ga₂O₃ n-p heterostructure capabilities is due to the development of the defects on Ga₂O₃-TiO₂ interface, which were able to trap electrons faster.
