Ureterosciatic Hernia in Focus: A Narrative Review of the Literature

Pelvic herniation of the ureter through anatomical musculoskeletal foramina stands out as one of the rarest causes of ureteric obstruction. Historically, most cases have been documented as incidental intraoperative findings. The herniation of the ureter through the sciatic foramen presents as a particularly uncommon variant of this condition, distinguished by its potential to cause life-threatening sepsis or renal failure if not promptly recognized and treated. The diagnostic process remains challenging, attributed partly to the vague initial symptomatology and subtle radiological findings, and second, to the rarity of this condition. This challenge may be further compounded by the lack of a clear description of clinical features and pathways to raise clinician suspicion. In light of these considerations, we conducted this literature review to illuminate this unique cause of obstructive uropathy, aiming to delineate its clinical features and explore common diagnostic and treatment options.

The rare urological entity of ureterosciatic hernia: A case report of successful treatment after repeated recurrence

Ureterosciatic hernia is a rare urological entity. We report a case of successful laparoscopic surgery for a ureterosciatic hernia that recurred repeatedly after conservative treatment. A 73-year-old woman complained of left abdominal pain. Computed tomography (CT) showed a left ureterosciatic hernia. After placement of the ureteral stent, the ureterosciatic hernia improved. The ureteral stent was removed after ureteral migration became normal. Four years and 8 months later, left ureterosciatic hernia recurred. Same treatment was performed; however, it recurred again. Therefore, laparoscopic surgery using a mesh was performed. The patient had no recurrence 9 months postoperatively.

[Successful laparoscopic robot-assisted surgical treatment of bilateral ureterosciatic hernias (Lindbom's hernia) and pelvic kidney]

Ureterosciaic hernia is a rarely described pathology that represents a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge for the treating physician. In this case report, we present a patient with symptomatic bilateral ureteroschial hernias and a pelvic kidney on the left. The definitive surgical treatment of the hernias was performed in the robotic-assisted laparoscopic technique.This is the second case describing bilateral intestinal sciatic hernia, in combination with its diagnosis and robotic surgical repair.In this paper we present the fourth known case of a robotic approach to the surgical treatment of ureterosciaic hernia with detailed presentation of diagnostic and therapeutic measures, as well as postoperative results and literature research on this rare pathology.

Obstructive urosepsis caused by ureterosciatic hernia: A case report

Ureterosciatic hernia (USH) is a relatively rare cause of ureteral obstruction. We report a case of a patient with obstructive urosepsis caused by USH and treated by ureteral stenting. An 83-year-old woman came to our hospital with symptoms of left lumbar back pain and fever. Enhanced computed tomography showed left hydronephrosis and ureteral protrusion through the greater foramen sciaticum. The patient was diagnosed with USH and underwent transurethral ureteral stenting. Eight months later, the ureteral stent was removed. There has been no recurrence of USH 6 months after removal of the ureteral stent.

Uretero-Sciatic Hernia (Lindbom Hernia): A Case Report and Long-Term Follow-Up

Ureteric herniation through the posterior pelvic wall is one of the rarest variants of hernias and causes of ureteric obstruction. The clinical features span from asymptomatic to a presentation with severe flank pain and life-threatening infection secondary to ureteric obstruction. The diagnosis needs a high index of suspicion and timely, appropriate radiological investigation. This article presents a case report of a patient who presented with a history of nonspecific abdominal pain and was diagnosed with a left-sided uretero-sciatic hernia (Lindblom hernia). This was managed with routine ureteral stent changes. Long-term follow-up and results from over 10 years of management are presented.
