Radiating pain: venom has contributed to the diversification of the largest radiations of vertebrate and invertebrate animals

Chemical defences indicate bold colour patterns with reduced variability in aposematic nudibranchs

The selective factors that shape phenotypic diversity in prey communities with aposematic animals are diverse and coincide with similar diversity in the strength of underlying secondary defences. However, quantitative assessments of colour pattern variation and the strength of chemical defences in assemblages of aposematic species are lacking. We quantified colour pattern diversity using quantitative colour pattern analysis (QCPA) in 13 dorid nudibranch species (Infraorder: Doridoidei) that varied in the strength of their chemical defences. We accounted for the physiological properties of a potential predator's visual system (a triggerfish, Rhinecanthus aculeatus) and modelled the appearance of nudibranchs from multiple viewing distances (2 and 10 cm). We identified distinct colour pattern properties associated with the presence and strength of chemical defences. Specifically, increases in chemical defences indicated increases in colour pattern boldness (i.e. visual contrast elicited via either or potentially coinciding chromatic, achromatic and/or spatial contrast). Colour patterns were also less variable among species with chemical defences when compared to undefended species. Our results indicate correlations between secondary defences and diverse, bold colouration while showing that chemical defences coincide with decreased colour pattern variability among species. Our study suggests that complex spatiochromatic properties of colour patterns perceived by potential predators can be used to make inferences on the presence and strength of chemical defences.

Morphological, functional, compositional and transcriptional constraints shape the distinct venom profiles of the assassin bug Sycanus croceovittatus

Predatory bugs employ a salivary venom apparatus to generate complex venoms for capturing and digesting prey. The venom apparatus consists of different glands for the production of distinct venom sets, but the underlying mechanisms behind this process remain poorly understood. Here we present a comprehensive analysis of the morphological, functional, compositional and transcriptional characteristics of venoms derived from posterior main gland (PMG), anterior main gland (AMG), and accessory gland (AG) of the assassin bug Sycanus croceovittatus. Structural observations revealed the intricate constructions of the venom apparatus, enabling the production and storage of three distinct venom sets in anatomically varied glands and allowing them to be modulated in a context-dependent manner upon utilization. There were remarkable differences in the biological activities exhibited by PMG, AMG, and AG venoms. Proteotranscriptomic analysis demonstrated that these venoms displayed compositional heterogeneity at both the quantity and variety levels of proteins. Transcriptional profiles of the identified venom proteins revealed gland-specific or biased expression patterns. These findings indicate that the divergence in venom profiles among different glands arises from morphological, functional, compositional and transcriptional constraints on the venom apparatus, reflecting remarkable morphogenesis and regulatory gene networks responsible for the compartmentalized production of venom proteins in different glands.

A Short Review of the Venoms and Toxins of Spider Wasps (Hymenoptera: Pompilidae)

Parasitoid wasps represent the plurality of venomous animals, but have received extremely little research in proportion to this taxonomic diversity. The lion’s share of investigation into insect venoms has focused on eusocial hymenopterans, but even this small sampling shows great promise for the development of new active substances. The family Pompilidae is known as the spider wasps because of their reproductive habits which include hunting for spiders, delivering a paralyzing sting, and entombing them in burrows with one of the wasp’s eggs to serve as food for the developing larva. The largest members of this family, especially the tarantula hawks of the genus Pepsis, have attained notoriety for their large size, dramatic coloration, long-term paralysis of their prey, and incredibly painful defensive stings. In this paper we review the existing research regarding the composition and function of pompilid venoms, discuss parallels from other venom literatures, identify possible avenues for the adaptation of pompilid toxins towards human purposes, and future directions of inquiry for the field.
