Abstract
The emergence of resistant microorganisms has reduced the effectiveness of currently available antimicrobials, necessitating the development of new strategies. Plant antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are promising candidates for novel drug development. In this study, we aimed to isolate, characterize, and evaluate the antimicrobial activities of AMPs isolated from Capsicum annuum. The antifungal potential was tested against Candida species. Three AMPs from C. annuum leaves were isolated and characterized: a protease inhibitor, a defensin-like protein, and a lipid transporter protein, respectively named CaCPin-II, CaCDef-like, and CaCLTP2. All three peptides had a molecular mass between 3.5 and 6.5 kDa and caused morphological and physiological changes in four different species of the genus Candida, such as pseudohyphae formation, cell swelling and agglutination, growth inhibition, reduced cell viability, oxidative stress, membrane permeabilization, and metacaspase activation. Except for CaCPin-II, the peptides showed low or no hemolytic activity at the concentrations used in the yeast assays. CaCPin-II inhibited α-amylase activity. Together, these results suggest that these peptides have the potential as antimicrobial agents against species of the genus Candida and can serve as scaffolds for the development of synthetic peptides for this purpose.

Abstract
The global increase in antimicrobial drug resistance has dramatically reduced the effectiveness of traditional antibiotics. Structurally diverse antibiotics are urgently needed to combat multiple-resistant bacterial infections. As part of innate immunity, antimicrobial peptides have been recognized as the most promising candidates because they comprise diverse sequences and mechanisms of action and have a relatively low induction rate of resistance. However, because of their low chemical stability, susceptibility to proteases, and high hemolytic effect, their usage is subject to many restrictions. Chemical modifications such as D-amino acid substitution, cyclization, and unnatural amino acid modification have been used to improve the stability of antimicrobial peptides for decades. Among them, a side-chain covalent bridge modification, the so-called stapled peptide, has attracted much attention. The stapled side-chain bridge stabilizes the secondary structure, induces protease resistance, and increases cell penetration and biological activity. Recent progress in computer-aided drug design and artificial intelligence methods has also been used in the design of stapled antimicrobial peptides and has led to the successful discovery of many prospective peptides. This article reviews the possible structure-activity relationships of stapled antimicrobial peptides, the physicochemical properties that influence their activity (such as net charge, hydrophobicity, helicity, and dipole moment), and computer-aided methods of stapled peptide design. Abstract
Dipeptidyl peptidase-IV (DPP-IV) inhibitory peptides from fermented foods exhibit great potential to alleviate type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). In this study, the DPP-IV inhibition activity of peptide extract from Chouguiyu was obviously enhanced after 4–8 d fermentation. A total of 125 DPP-IV inhibitory peptides in Chouguiyu were identified by peptidomics and were obtained from 46 precursor proteins, mainly including nebulin, titin, muscle-type creatine kinase, hemoglobin, and actin. After molecular docking with DPP-IV, four novel DPP-IV inhibitory peptides possessing the lowest docking energy were selected, including EPAEAVGDWR (D37), IPHESVDVIK (D22), PDLSKHNNHM (D35), and PFGNTHNNFK (D1). The DPP-IV inhibition activity of D37, D22, D35, and D1 were further verified after synthesis with the IC50 of 0.10 mM, 2.69 mM, 3.88 mM, and 8.51 mM, respectively, in accordance with their docking energies. Energy interaction showed that the structures of EP-, IPH-, -NHM, and PF- in these peptides were easy to connect with DPP-IV enzyme through hydrogen bond, salt bridge, and alkyl. The surface force including the H-bond interaction, hydrophobicity, aromatic interaction, and SAS, played a major role in the interaction between DPP-IV enzyme and peptides. The peptides that possess high hydrophobicity and can form strong hydrogen bond and salt bridge are potential DPP-IV inhibitory peptides using for T2DM remission. DPP-Ⅳ inhibition activity of peptide extract in Chouguiyu increased by fermentation. The main precursor proteins of DPP-Ⅳ inhibitory peptides were nebulin and titin. Inhibition mechanism was explored by energy interaction and surface force. Docking energy was an effective index to select DPP-IV inhibitory peptides. DPP-IV inhibitory peptides formed hydrogen bond and salt bridge with DPP-IV.

Abstract
Currently, the high added-value compounds contained in plant by-products and wastes offer a wide spectrum of opportunities for their reuse and valorization, contributing to the circular economy. The bell pepper (Capsicum annum L.) is an exotic vegetable with high nutritional value that, after processing, leaves wastes (peel, seeds, and leaves) that represent desirable raw material for obtaining phytochemical compounds. This review summarizes and discusses the relevant information on the phytochemical profile of bell peppers and their related biological properties as an alternative to revalorize losses and wastes from bell peppers for their application in the food and pharmaceutical industries. Bell pepper fruits, seeds, and leaves contain bioactive compounds (phenols, flavonoids, carotenoids, tocopherol, and pectic polysaccharides) that exhibit antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, immunosuppressive and immunostimulant properties, and antidiabetic, antitumoral and neuroprotective activities, and have a potential use as functional food additives. In this context, the revalorization of food waste is positioned as a technological and innovative research area with beneficial effects for the population, the economy, and the environment. Further studies are required to guarantee the safety use of these compounds and to understand their mechanisms of action.

Abstract
Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz.) is an important economic crop in tropical countries. Demands for using cassava in food, feed and biofuel industries have been increasing worldwide. Cassava anthracnose disease, caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides f.sp. manihotis (CAD), is considered a major problem in cassava production. To minimize the effects of such disease, this study investigated the response of cassava to attack by CAD and how the plants defend themselves against this threat. Genome-wide identification of antimicrobial peptide genes (AMPs) and their expression in response to fungal infection was performed in the resistant cassava cultivar (Huay Bong 60; HB60) in comparison with the highly susceptible cultivar (Hanatee; HN). A total of 114 gene members of AMP were identified in the cassava genome database. Fifty-six gene members were selected for phylogenetic tree construction and analysis of putative cis-acting elements in their promoter regions. Differential expression profiles of six candidate genes were observed in response to CAD infection of both cassava cultivars. Upregulation of snakins, MeSN1 and MeSN2 was found in HB60, whereas MeHEL, Me-AMP-D2 and MeLTP2 were highly induced in HN. The MeLTP1 gene was not expressed in either cultivar. HB60 showed a reduced severity rating in comparison to HN after CAD infection. The biomembrane permeability test of fungal CAD was strongly affected after treatment with protein extract derived from CAD-infected HB60. Altogether, these findings suggest that snakins have a potential function in the CAD defense response in cassava. These results could be useful for cassava improvement programs to fight fungal pathogen.

Abstract
Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are small defense proteins present in various organisms. Major groups of AMPs include beta-barrelin, hevein, knottin, lipid transfer protein (LTP), thionin, defensin, snakin, and cyclotide. Most plant AMPs involve host plant resistance to pathogens such as fungi, viruses, and bacteria, whereas a few plant AMPs from the cyclotide family carry insecticidal functions. In this research, a genome-wide investigation on antimicrobial peptide genes in maize genome was conducted. AMPs previously identified from various plant species were used as query sequences for maize genome data mining. Thirty-nine new maize AMPs were identified in addition to seven known maize AMPs. Protein sequence analysis revealed 10 distinguishable maize AMP groups. Analysis of mRNA expression of maize AMP genes by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) revealed different expression patterns in a panel of 10 maize inbred lines. Five maize AMP genes were found significantly associated with insect or fungus resistance. Identification of maize antimicrobial peptide genes will facilitate the breeding of host plant resistance and improve maize production.
