Abstract
PURPOSE To explore the clinical value of various complete blood count (CBC)-derived inflammation indicators to predict in-hospital mortality in patients with extensive burns. METHODS Systemic inflammation indexes, including lymphocyte-platelet ratio (LPR), neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), neutrophil-monocyte ratio (NMR), monocyte-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte * platelet (NLPR), systemic inflammation index (SII), and systemic inflammation response index (SIRI) on days 1, 3, and 7 after admission were calculated in 135 patients with extensive burns. RESULTS We included 135 patients with extensive burns, including 97 survivors and 38 non-survivors. After adjusting for confounders, only the LPR on day 1, NLPR on days 3 and 7 were significantly associated with survival (OR= 1.237, 1.097, 1.104; 95 % CI: 1.055-1.451, 1.002-1.202, 1.005-1.212; respectively) in the analysis of multivariate logistic regression. The optimum cutoff values of the LPR on day 1 and NLPR on day 3 were 6.37 and 8.06, and the area under the curves (AUC) were 0.695 and 0.794, respectively. The AUC of NLPR on day 7 had the highest value, 0.814, and the optimum cut-off value was 3.84. The efficacy of LPR on day 1, NLPR on days 3 and 7 combined with the burn prognostic score index in predicting the prognosis of patients was higher than that of the burn index alone, and the three composite inflammatory indexes combined with PBI had the highest efficacy in predicting the prognosis (AUC = 0.994). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed poor prognosis in patients with higher LPR on day 1 and higher NLPR on days 3 and 7 (log-rank χ2 =9.623,31.564, 20.771, respectively; P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS LPR on day 1 and NLPR on days 3 and 7 after admission are reliable predictors of prognosis in patients with severe extensive burns. The combination of the burn prognostic score index, LPR on day 1, and NLPR on days 3 and 7 was superior to the burn indexes alone in predicting a patient's prognosis.

Abstract
The associations between several blood inflammatory indicators and risk of vascular plaques remain inconclusive. A total of 4596 native rural residents in Southeast China were enrolled from the Fuqing cohort study. Blood cell counts and their composite indexes including the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and 2 novel indicators (systemic immune inflammation index (SII) and systemic immune inflammation response index (SIRI)) were considered as inflammatory indicators. Common carotid and femoral intima-media thickness (IMT) and plaques were assessed using B-mode ultrasound. Unconditional or multinomial logistic regression was used to evaluate potential associations. The prevalence of multiple femoral plaques (defined as IMT ≥1.5 mm) was significantly higher among participants with the highest tertile of total leukocyte count (odds ratio, 1.78), neutrophil count (1.88), monocyte count (2.51), platelet count (1.68), NLR (1.93), PLR (1.57), SII (2.10), and SIRI (2.94). Higher levels of neutrophil count, platelet count, NLR, and SII were also found to have significant linear dose-response relationships with the prevalence of stenosis, especially in femoral arteries. In conclusion, several blood inflammatory biomarkers may contribute to, or are associated with, the presence of IMT ≥1.5 mm or stenosis especially in femoral arteries.

Abstract
The link between severe forms of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and cardiovascular diseases has been well documented by various studies that indicated a higher risk of cardiovascular complications in COVID-19 patients, in parallel with a higher risk of mortality in COVID-19 patients with underlying cardiovascular diseases. It seems that inflammation, which is a major pathophysiological substrate for both acute myocardial infarction and severe forms of COVID-19, may play a pivotal role in the interrelation between these two critical conditions, and hypercoagulability associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection could be responsible for acute cardiovascular complications. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) proved to be independent predictors for prognosis in acute coronary syndromes and systemic inflammatory diseases; therefore, they may be used as independent prognostic markers of disease severity in COVID-19 infection. The aim of this review is to present the most recent advances in understanding the complex link between SARS-CoV-2 infection, inflammation and alteration of blood coagulability and hemorheology, leading to major cardiovascular events.

Association of platelet to lymphocyte ratio with in-hospital major adverse cardiovascular events and the severity of coronary artery disease assessed by the Gensini score in patients with acute myocardial infarction. Abstract
Background: The platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) has recently emerged as a potential inflammatory biomarker and has been shown to be significantly associated with atherosclerotic coronary artery disease (CAD). Therefore, we aimed to explore the association of PLR with in-hospital major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) and the severity of CAD assessed by the Gensini score (GS) in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) undergoing coronary angiography. Methods: A total of 502 patients with AMI consecutively treated at the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University (Qingdao, China) and underwent coronary angiography from August 2017 to December 2018 were recruited in this study. The demographic, clinical, angiographic characteristics, and laboratory parameters were collected. According to the presence of in-hospital MACEs, the included patients were divided into the MACE group (n = 81) and the non-MACE group (n = 421). Further, according to tertiles of the GS, the patients were classified into three groups: the low GS group (GS ≤ 32 points, n = 173), medium GS group (32 points < GS ≤ 60 points, n = 169), and high GS group (60 points < GS ≤ 180 points, n = 160). The main statistical methods included Chi-squared test, non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis H test, logistic regression, and receiver operating characteristic curves. Results: The PLR in the MACE group was significantly higher than that in the non-MACE group (179.43 [132.84, 239.74] vs. 116.11 [87.98, 145.45], Z = –8.109, P < 0.001). Further, there were significant differences in PLR among the tertiles of GS (110.05 [84.57, 139.06] vs. 119.78 [98.44, 157.98] vs. 140.00 [102.27, 191.83], H = 19.524, P < 0.001). PLR was demonstrated to be an independent risk factor of in-hospital MACEs (odds ratio [OR]: 1.012, 95% confidential interval [CI]: 1.006–1.018, P < 0.001) and severe CAD assessed by the GS (OR: 1.004, 95% CI: 1.002–1.009, P = 0.042). The cutoff value of PLR for predicting the development of in-hospital MACEs was 151.28 with a sensitivity of 66.7% and a specificity of 78.1% (area under the curve [AUC]: 0.786, 95% CI: 0.730–0.842, P < 0.001), and a PLR of 139.31 was also identified to be an effective cutoff point for detecting a high GS (>60 points) with a sensitivity of 49.4% and a specificity of 69.6% (AUC: 0.611, 95% CI: 0.556–0.666, P < 0.001). Conclusions: PLR as a novel inflammatory marker is significantly and independently associated with the occurrence of in-hospital MACEs and the severity of CAD assessed by the GS in patients with AMI. As an easily available and inexpensive inflammatory indicator, PLR could be widely used as an efficient inflammatory biomarker for identifying high-risk patients and for individualizing targeted therapy to improve the prognosis of AMI.

Abstract
Recent studies have shown a correlation between Helicobacter pylori (H. Pylori) infection and the neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR). The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between H. Pylori infection and hematimetric indices in patients with dyspepsia symptoms. Overall, 448 patients who underwent gastroscopy were analyzed retrospectively. Histopathological evaluation of biopsies according to H. pylori presence was classified as H. Pylori positive and negative groups, which are analyzed in relation with hematimetric indices. NLR and PLR measurements did not show a statistically significant difference between H. pylori negative and positive groups (p > 0.05). NLR revealed a negative correlation between hemoglobin (HGB), iron, and ferritin measurements in the correlation analysis of the H. Pylori positive group (r = −0.133, p = 0.031; r = −0.270, p = 0.002; r = −0.162, p = 0.032). Again, with PLR, there was a negative correlation between HGB, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), iron, and ferritin measurements (r = −0.310, p = 0.001, r = −0.187, p = 0.002, r = −0.335, p = 0.001; r = −0.290; p = 0.001). The results of our study do not reveal an association between H. pylori presence and inflammatory response, which is evaluated by NLR and PLR measurements in patients with dyspepsia. However, low serum iron and ferritin values of H. pylori-positive patients suggest the effect of H. pylori on iron metabolism.

Abstract
The platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) is an integrated reflection of 2 opposite thrombotic/inflammatory pathways that are easily calculated from a complete blood count. The PLR initially served as a systemic inflammatory biomarker to predict the prognosis of neoplastic diseases. In recent years, the PLR has been used as a prognostic marker in cardiovascular (CV) conditions. In this review, we consider the evidence regarding the association of the PLR with CV disease (CVD) and its possible use as a prognostic marker of CVD. The role of PLR has been investigated in CV conditions in several studies. We assessed clinical trials using PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science (up to April 18, 2018) to evaluate the association between PLR and mortality/major adverse cardiac events in these conditions. Most of these studies reported significant relationships between a high PLR and diverse outcomes. In conclusion, we suggest that PLR is a cheap and easily available systemic inflammatory marker that can predict distinct outcomes in different types of CVD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive diagnosing tool used in clinics. Due to its high resolution (<10um), it is appropriate for the early detection of tiny infections. It has been widely used in diagnosis and treatment of diseases, evaluation of therapeutic efficacy, and monitoring of various physiological and pathological processes. OBJECTIVE To systemically review literature to summarize the clinic application of OCT in recent years. METHODS For clinic applications that OCT has been applied, we selected studies that describe the most relevant works. The discussion included: 1) which tissue could be used in the OCT detection, 2) which character of different tissue could be used as diagnosing criteria, 3) which diseases and pathological process have been diagnosed or monitored using OCT imaging, and 4) the recent development of clinic OCT diagnosing. RESULTS The literature showed that the OCT had been listed as a routine test choice for ophthalmic diseases, while the first commercial product for cardiovascular OCT detection had gotten clearance. Meanwhile, as the development of commercial benchtop OCT equipment and tiny fiber probe, the commercial application of OCT in dermatology, dentistry, gastroenterology and urology also had great potential in the near future. CONCLUSIONS The analysis and discussions showed that OCT, as an optical diagnosing method, has been used successfully in many clinical fields, and has the potential to be a standard inspection method in several clinic fields, such as dermatology, dentistry and cardiovascular.

Abstract
Background Dietary fat is considered one of the most important factors associated with blood lipid metabolism and plays a significant role in the cause and prevention of atherosclerosis that has been widely accepted as an inflammatory disease of the vascular system. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of genetically modified flaxseed (W86) rich in phenylpropanoid compounds and hydrolysable tannin in high cholesterol-induced atherosclerosis rabbit models compared to parental cultivar Linola. Methods Twenty-Eight White New Zealand white rabbits aged 6 months were randomly divided into four groups, control group, high cholesterol group (10 g/kg), Linola flaxseed group (100 g/kg) and W86 flaxseed group (100 g/kg). The rabbits were fed a normal diet or a high cholesterol diet for 10 weeks. Levels of blood lipids, hematological values, total antioxidative status and superoxide dismutase activity in serum were determined. Moreover, body weight and feed intake were measured after sixth and tenth weeks. After each stage of the experiment atherogenic indexes (non-HDL-C/HDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C, and atherogenic index of plasma) was calculated. Results The intake of a dyslipidaemic diet negatively influenced lipid profile in rabbits at the 10 weeks of feeding. W86 flaxseed significantly decreased total cholesterol, LDL-C, VLDL-C and TG serum levels in cholesterolemic rabbits compared with parental Linola after 10 weeks. Atherogenic indexes decreased over time with a significant difference between the diets and they were the best for W86 flaxseed. Similarly, the experimental addition of W86 significantly decreased atherogenic predictors such as heterophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio, and the mean platelet volume-to-lymphocyte ratio. In rabbits, W86 flaxseed increased the activity of superoxide dismutase and total antioxidative status compared to Linola. Conclusions Results of the presented study suggest that the addition of W86 flaxseed alleviate serum lipid changes in high cholesterolemic diet-administered rabbits. W86 flaxseed significantly reduced atherogenic indexes, as compared with the Linola and indicate that W86 flaxseed more effectively red CVD risk factors during hypercholesterolemia. Moreover, the presented result suggested that W86 flaxseed can be a part of a heart-healthy and antiatherogenic diet for the human. Abstract
AIM To investigate the diagnostic efficacy of platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in patients with Crohn's disease (CD).
METHODS EDTA anticoagulant venous blood was collected from CD patients (n = 60) and healthy controls (n = 60), and routine blood test was performed to obtain the neutrophilic granulocyte count, lymphocyte count, and platelet count. Then, the PLR and NLR were calculated. The sensitivity (Sen), specificity (Spe), and cut-off values were calculated by receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve analysis.
RESULTS CD patients had significantly higher PLR (181 ± 45.12 vs 86 ± 32.78) and NLR (3.07 ± 1.02 vs 2.52 ± 1.14) than healthy controls (P < 0.05). The cut-off values for PLR and NLR were 133.12 (Sen: 76.21%; Spe: 84.53%) and 2.85 (Sen: 69.16%; Spe: 76.24%), respectively, and the areas under the ROC curves for PLR and NLR were 0.764 and 0.828, respectively.
CONCLUSION PLR and NLR might be effective and low-cost biomarkers for distinguishing CD patients from healthy controls.
