Abstract
In Indonesia, the implementation of tuberculosis (TB) contact investigation is limited, with low detection rates. We report the yield of and risk factors for TB disease and infection for household contacts (HHCs) investigated using chest X-ray (CXR) screening. We identified HHCs aged five years and above of bacteriologically confirmed index cases from 2018 to 2022 in Yogyakarta City and Kulon Progo. All HHCs were offered screening for TB symptoms; TB infection testing with either tuberculin skin testing or interferon gamma release assay; and referral for CXR. Sputum from those with symptoms or CXR suggestive of TB was tested with Xpert MTB/RIF. Risk factors for active TB disease and latent TB infection (LTBI) were identified by logistic regression models. We screened 2857 HHCs for TB between June 2020 and December 2022, with 68 (2.4%) diagnosed with active TB. Of 2621 HHCs eligible for LTBI investigation, 1083 (45.7%) were diagnosed with LTBI. The factors associated with active TB were age, being underweight, diabetes mellitus, urban living, and sleeping in the same house as an index case. Factors associated with LTBI were increasing age and male gender. Conclusions: Screening for HHC including CXR and TST/IGRA yielded a moderate prevalence of TB disease and infection.

Abstract
Objectives Diabetes mellitus (DM) patients are considered to be at high risk for contracting latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI). This study aimed to determine the prevalence of LTBI and its associated factors among diabetic patients attending primary care clinics in Terengganu state, Malaysia. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted among diabetic patients attending 11 health clinics in the Terengganu region from June 2017 to November 2018. The selected participants were administered a tuberculin skin test (TST). Simple and multivariate logistic regressions were applied to evaluate the significant associated factors of LTBI. Results The total number of participants were 703 DM patients. The factors found associated with LTBI were poor diabetic control status (odds ratio (OR) = 8.53; p=0.008), being a healthcare worker (OR = 7.91; p=0.001), history of contact with TB patients (OR = 5.69; p < 0.001), bronchial asthma (OR = 5.28; p=0.019), coronary heart disease (OR = 3.45; p=0.026), and nephropathy (OR = 0.34; p=0.040). The presence of LTBI was found in 34 (4.8%) participants. Conclusions At 4.8%, the prevalence of LTBI among DM patients in Terengganu is relatively low. Diabetics with poorly controlled blood glucose levels, nephropathy, bronchial asthma, coronary heart disease, history of TB patient contact, or working in the healthcare profession should be periodically tested for LTBI.

Abstract
The overall prevalence of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in this study was 63.36%. The positivity rate for the tuberculin skin test was higher compared with the QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus test. The prevalence of LTBI was high among slaughterhouse workers (100%). Protozoal infection was found to be significantly associated with LTBI.

Abstract
Although several cohort studies have raised the important association between diabetes mellitus (DM) and latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI), evidences are limited and controversial. Furthermore, it is well documented that the poor glycemic control may exacerbate the risk for active TB. Thus, the monitoring of diabetic patients living in high-incidence areas for TB is an important concern in views of available diagnostic tests for LTBI. In this cross-sectional study, we estimate the association of DM and LTBI among diabetic patients classified as type-1 DM (T1D) or type-2 DM (T2D) living in Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil - considered a high TB burden region of these country. Non-DM volunteers were included as endemic area healthy controls. All participants were screened for DM using glycosylated-hemoglobin (HbA1c) and for LTBI using the QuantiFERON-TB Gold in Tube (QFT-GIT). Demographic, socioeconomic, clinical and laboratorial data were also assessed. Among 553 included participants, 88 (15.9%) had QFT-GIT positive test, of which 18 (20.5%) were non-DM, 30 (34.1%) T1D and 40 (45.4%) T2D. After adjustments for potential baseline confounders, age, self-reported non-white skin color and an active TB case in the family were significantly associated with LTBI among the studied population by using a hierarchical multivariate logistic regression analysis. Additionally, we verified that T2D patients were able to produce significant increased interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) plasma levels in response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis-specific antigens, when compared to non-DM individuals. Altogether, our data showed an increased prevalence of LTBI among DM patients, albeit non-statistically significant, and point out to important independent factors associated with LTBI, which deserve attention in monitoring patients with DM. Moreover, QFT-GIT test seems to be a good tool to screening LTBI in this population, even in a high TB burden area.

The effect of BCG vaccination and risk factors for latent tuberculosis infection among college freshmen in China. Int J Infect Dis 2022; 122:321-326.2. Abstract
OBJECTIVES In this study, we aimed to verify whether Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) can protect first-year college students against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) infection by the recombinant fusion protein ESAT6-CFP10 skin test (ECST) or the tuberculin skin test (TST). METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study to assess risk factors for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI). Vaccine effectiveness of BCG against LTBI, measured by ECST and TST separately, was assessed using multivariable logistic regression. RESULTS A total of 7351 college freshmen accepted ECST, whereas 7228 accepted TST. A total of 263 (3.58%) tested positive with ECST and 581 (8.04%) tested positive with TST. BCG was significantly associated with LTBI (ECST: adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 0.26; 95% CI 0.09 to 0.73; TST: aOR = 0.25; 95% CI 0.13 to 0.49). The BCG protective effect on freshmen living in rural areas (ECST: aOR = 0.16; 95% CI 0.04 to 0.55; TST: aOR = 0.12; 95% CI 0.04 to 0.33) is better than that of freshmen living in cities (ECST: aOR = 0.53; 95% CI 0.07 to 4.03; TST: aOR = 0.44; 95% CI 0.17 to 1.16). CONCLUSIONS Protection against LTBI was strongly associated with BCG vaccination. A novel skin test (ECST) may underestimate the protective effects of BCG in college freshmen. BCG has better protection in areas with a slightly higher incidence of LTBI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Early diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB) cases in limited resource remains challenging. It is urgent to identify the new diagnostic tools which can control the spread of disease with accurate and rapid test.
AIM: This study aimed to investigate the levels of infection markers: Composite bacterial infection index (CBII) and serum amyloid A (SAA) protein in pulmonary TB (PTB), and their healthy household contacts, as the alternative diagnostic markers for TB.
METHODS: CBII and SAA were measured from 44 new PTB patients, and 31 household contact serum samples. The value of CBII was calculated from neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) level. hs-CRP and SAA levels were quantified from their serum samples using ELISA. QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus (interferon gamma release assay [IGRA]) was used to screen latent TB infection among household contacts.
RESULTS: Among 31 household contacts, there were 24 positive IGRA results and the rest (n = 7) had negative results. PTB patients exhibited significantly higher level CBII in the serum specimens, than those in household contact (p < 0.0001). There was no significant difference in the SAA level between TB cases and household contacts (p = 0.679).
CONCLUSIONS: CBII can be used as one of the biomarkers for the identification of PTB from the serum specimens.

Abstract
Earthquake-induced tsunamis have the potential to cause extensive damage to natural and built environments and are often associated with fatalities, injuries, and infectious disease outbreaks. This review aims to examine the occurrence of respiratory infections (RIs) and to elucidate the risk factors of RI transmission following tsunamis which were induced by earthquakes in the last 20 years. Forty-seven articles were included in this review and referred to the RIs emergence following the 2004 Sumatra-Andaman, the 2009 Samoa, and the 2011 Japan earthquakes. Polymicrobial RIs were commonly detected among near-drowned tsunami survivors. Influenza outbreaks were commonly detected during the influenza transmission period. Overcrowded conditions in evacuation centers contributed to increased acute RI incidence rate, measles transmission, and tuberculosis detection. Destruction of health care infrastructures, overcrowded evacuation shelters, exposure to high pathogen densities, aggravating weather conditions, regional disease endemicity, and low vaccination coverage were the major triggering factors of RI occurrence in post-tsunami disaster settings. Knowledge of risk factors underlying RIs emergence following earthquake-induced tsunami can contribute to the implementation of appropriate disaster prevention and preparedness plans characterized by sufficient environmental planning, resistant infrastructures, resilient health care facilities, and well-established evacuation centers. Global and local disease surveillance is a key prerequisite for early warning and protection against RIs’ emergence and transmission in tsunami-prone areas.

Abstract
Introduction Household Contacts (HHCs) of Pulmonary Tuberculosis (PTB) patients have a higher risk of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI). However, its prevalence and risk factors among adults living with PTB patients are poorly documented in Kenya. Objective to determine the prevalence and risk factors for LTBI among adult HHCs of PTB patients in Kenya. Methods this was an analytical cross-sectional study of HHCs of PTB patients in Nairobi, Kenya. Socio-demographic data was captured on questionnaires and blood samples drawn for Interferon gamma (IFN-γ) quantification. Univariate and multivariate analyses using the Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS) was used to determine the prevalence of LTBI and risk factors at 95% Confidence Interval (CI). Results a total of 166 PTB patients yielded 175 HHCs of whom 29.7% (52/125) were males and 70.3% (123/125) were females. A majority of HHCs [65.7% (115/175)] lived in a single-room house with the patient and [37.7% (66/175)] were in the age group 30-39-years. The overall prevalence of LTBI was 55.7%, peaking among spouses of the patients [70.0% (14/20) and the 30-39 year age group [63.5% (42/66)]. Potential risk factors for LTBI included cohabiting with a PTB patient for 8 to 12 weeks [OR = 3.6 (0.70-18.5), p = 0.107], being a spouse of the patient [OR = 2.0 (0.72-5.47), p = 0.173] and sharing a single room with the patient [OR = 1.58 (0.84 - 2.97), p = 0.158]. Conclusion the high prevalence of LTBI among adult HHCs of PTB patients in this population demonstrates the need for targeted contact-screening programs in high TB transmission settings.

Abstract
PURPOSE No research has been done in New York City that shows the demographic characteristics of household contacts testing, evaluation, and treatment of LTBI. The objective of the study was to identify demographic factors associated with household contacts' TB testing, evaluation, and LTBI treatment. DESIGN AND METHODS A retrospective analysis of the New York City (NYC) TB registry data that examined the factors (gender, age, country of birth, race/ethnicity, and borough of residence) associated with TB testing, evaluation, and LTBI treatment. The study sample included all household contacts of TB cases identified from 2010 to 2014 (N = 3,008). The data set was chosen when nurses were the primary case managers at chest centers in the department of health. Descriptive and inferential analysis was used to identify factors associated with testing, evaluation, and LTBI treatment. RESULTS The demographic characteristics of household contacts associated with testing, evaluation, and LTBI treatment were consistent with those of TB cases in NYC from 2010 to 2014. Those not tested, not fully evaluated, and refusing LTBI treatment were most often aged 18-44 years and were non-US born. Males were significantly more likely than females not to be fully evaluated. Among racial/ethnic groups, Asian and Hispanic persons were at higher risk of not being fully evaluated, and residents of Queens had the highest risk among the five boroughs. In multivariate analyses, age was a significant predictor of behavior, such that the older the person the less likely to get TB testing or to accept LTBI treatment. Non-US country of birth was associated with lower likelihood of being fully evaluated but more likely to accept LTBI treatment when fully evaluated, while Asian or Hispanic race/ethnicity was associated with higher likelihood of both behaviors. CONCLUSIONS Findings on age from this study will enable public health agencies and public health nurses to plan for effective strategies that will increase the number of household contacts who accept TB testing and evaluation, as well as the numbers who will accept and complete LTBI treatment.

Abstract
Tuberculosis (TB) represents a health problem in Colombia, and its control is focused on the search for contacts and treatment of TB cases underscoring the role of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) as a reservoir of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The burden of LTBI in Colombia is unknown. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of LTBI and identify the associated risk factors. In this cross-sectional study, we recruited participants from four health care centers in Cali, Colombia. The participants were eligible if they were aged between 14 and 70 years, and all participants answered a survey evaluating their medical history and sociodemographic and lifestyle factors. LTBI status was based on tuberculin skin test (TST) positivity using two thresholds: ≥10 mm (TST-10) and ≥15 mm (TST-15). The magnitude of the associations between independent factors and dependent outcomes (LTBI status and TST induration) were evaluated by logistic regression and generalized linear models, respectively. A total of 589 individuals were included with TST positivity rates of 25.3% (TST-10) and 13.2% (TST-15). Logistic regression showed that being between age 40 and 69 years (OR = 7.28, 95% CI [1.62–32.7]), being male (OR = 1.71, 95% CI [1.04–2.84]), being employed (OR = 1.56, 95% CI [1.02–2.38]), and having a low intake of alcohol (OR = 2.40, 95% CI [1.13–5.11]) were risk factors for TST positivity, while living in the north zone (OR = 0.32, 95% CI [0.18–0.55]), living in the suburb zone (OR = 0.28, 95% CI [0.15–0.52]) and having a secondary education (OR = 0.49 95% CI [0.29–0.83]) lowered the risk of TST positivity. The generalized linear model showed that the previous predictors, as well as a low body mass index, had an effect on TST reaction size. The LTBI prevalence found in the population was moderate, reflecting the continuous transmission of M. tuberculosis. Social factors seem to play a decisive role in the risk of LTBI. Employed males, who are over 40 years of age, are overweight, have a lower level of education and have a low intake of alcohol (50–100 mL, once/week) should be a priority group for prophylactic treatment as a strategy for TB control in this city.

Abstract
BACKGROUND BCG appears to reduce acquisition of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection in children, measured using interferon-gamma release assays (IGRAs). We explored whether BCG vaccination continues to be associated with decreased prevalence of M. tuberculosis infection in adults. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of data from adult contacts of tuberculosis cases participating in a UK cohort study. Vaccine effectiveness (VE) of BCG, ascertained based on presence of a scar or vaccination history, against latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI), measured via IGRA, was assessed using multivariable logistic regression. The effects of age at BCG and time since vaccination were also explored. RESULTS Of 3453 recent tuberculosis contacts, 27.5% had LTBI. There was strong evidence of an association between BCG and LTBI (adjusted odds ratio = 0.70; 95% confidence interval, .56-.87; P = .0017) yielding a VE of 30%. VE declined with time since vaccination but there was evidence that LTBI prevalence was lower amongst vaccinated individuals even >20 years after vaccination, compared with nonvaccinated participants. CONCLUSIONS BCG is associated with lower prevalence of LTBI in adult contacts of tuberculosis. These results contribute to growing evidence that suggests BCG may protect against M. tuberculosis infection as well as disease. This has implications for immunization programs, vaccine development, and tuberculosis control efforts worldwide. CLINICAL TRIALS REGISTRATION NCT01162265.

Abstract
This study aimed to reveal the associated risk factors for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) detected by T-SPOT.TB assay among health care workers (HCWs) at different working locations or job categories in China. This cross-sectional study included 934 HCWs who underwent the T-SPOT.TB assay. Demographic and social characteristics of the participants, including age, sex, job categories, department/ward and duration of healthcare service, were recorded. Among 934 HCWs, 267 (28.5867%) were diagnosed as having LTBI with positive T-SPOT.TB assay. HCWs working in inpatient tuberculosis (TB) (odds ratio (OR) 2.917; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.852–4.596; P < 0.001) and respiratory wards (OR 1.840; 95% CI 1.124–3.011; P = 0.015), and with longer duration of healthcare service (OR 1.048; 95% CI 1.016–1.080; P = 0.003) were risk factors for positive T-SPOT.TB result. Furthermore, longer working duration increased the positive rate of T-SPOT.TB results for physicians and nurses, and physicians had higher risks than nurses for the same working duration. Inpatient TB and respiratory wards were high-risk working locations for HCWs with LTBI, and longer duration of healthcare service also increased the risk of LTBI among HCWs. A complete strategy for TB infection control and protection awareness among HCWs should be enhanced.

Abstract
Setting: Identification and screening of contacts of patients with active tuberculosis (TB) is infrequent in low- and middle-income countries. Objective: To estimate the incidence, prevalence and risk factors of latent tuberculous infection (LTBI) and active TB among contacts of newly reported smear-positive TB patients. Design: A population-based contact investigation of sputum smear-positive pulmonary TB (PTB) cases diagnosed between April and December 2012 in Georgia was conducted. LTBI was assessed using the tuberculin skin test (TST). Contacts with active TB were identified from the National TB Program surveillance database. Results: Among 896 index patients with active TB, 3133 contacts were identified and 1157 (37%) underwent a TST, 34% of whom were positive. Most contacts were household contacts (86%) and female (58%). Among contacts, the 1-year period prevalence of active TB was 3.3% (95%CI 2.70-3.98); the incidence rate was 1101 per 100 000 person-years (95%CI 822-1443). In multivariable analysis, household contacts were more likely to have LTBI (adjusted OR [aOR] 2.28, 95%CI 1.49-3.49) than close contacts. Conclusions: A high prevalence of both LTBI and active TB was identified among contacts of PTB cases. Efforts aimed at active case finding among TB contacts should improve early case detection and enhance TB control efforts.

Abstract
Globally, the prevalence of tuberculosis (TB) disease is higher in males. This study examined the effect of sex and age on Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection. Demographic and exposure data were collected on household contacts of sputum smear-positive pulmonary TB patients in Brazil. Contacts with tuberculin skin test induration ⩾10 mm at baseline or 12 weeks were considered Mtb infected. The study enrolled 917 household contacts from 160 households; 508 (55.4%) were female, median age was 21.0 years (range 0.30-87.0) and 609 (66.4%) had Mtb infection. The proportion infected increased with age from 63.3% in girls <5 years to 75.4% in women ⩾40 years and from 44.9% in boys <5 years to 73.6% in men ⩾40 years. Multivariable modelling showed the odds of infection increased between age 5 and 14 years among female contacts (OR 1.5 per 5-year age increase; 95% CI 1.1-2.2; P = 0.02) and between ages 0-4 and 15-39 years among male contacts (OR 2.7, 95% CI 0.83-8.9 and 1.1, 95% CI 0.99-1.3 per 5-year age increase; P = 0.10, 0.07, respectively). The study suggests that the age at which Mtb infection increases most is different in females compared with males. Studies are needed to explore whether these findings are due to differences in host susceptibility, exposure outside the household or other factors.

Abstract
Results of tuberculin skin test (TST) surveys among different populations have been reported in many studies as a method for detecting primary Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. Combining these results provides reliable estimates of primary latent tuberculosis (TB) infection for health policymakers. This study aims to estimate the prevalence of latent TB infection in general and high-risk populations in Iran. National and international databanks were searched using specific keywords. After restricting the search strategy, duplicates exclusion, reviewing titles, abstracts and full texts, and quality assessment, eligible papers were selected. The heterogeneity between the results was assessed according to Cochrane and I-squared indices. The prevalence of positive TST reactions was estimated using fixed and random effect models. Totally, 33 papers were entered into the meta-analysis reporting the TST results in 12693 people aged over 18. The prevalence (95% confidence intervals) of positive TST reactions in all groups, general population, health staff, medical students, household close contacts, patients with TB, immunocompromised patients, HIV/AIDS patients, and those with risky behaviors was 26.2% (19.6-32.8), 25.4% (4.8-46.1), 38.9% (27.4-50.9), 13.4% (9.9-16.7), 35.9% (16.4-55.5), 13.7% (8.4-18.9), 29.4% (21.2-37.7), and 14.6% (3.9-25.3), respectively. Our study showed great varieties of positive TST results among different Iranian subpopulations. Furthermore, the prevalence of latent TB infection among health professionals and family members of TB patients was considerably different from that of the other subgroup. Since TB control programs such as active case finding are routinely conducted among household close contacts and HIV/AIDS cases, other high-risk groups including health-care workers and immunocompromised patients should be taken into consideration in these preventive programs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Healthcare workers in high tuberculosis burdened countries are occupationally exposed to the tuberculosis disease with uncomplicated and complicated tuberculosis on the increase among them. Most of them acquire Mycobacterium tuberculosis but do not progress to the active disease - latent tuberculosis infection. The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence and risk factors associated with latent tuberculosis infection among healthcare workers in Nampula Central Hospital, Mozambique. METHODS This cross-sectional study of healthcare workers was conducted between 2014 and 2015. Participants (n = 209) were administered a questionnaire on demographics and occupational tuberculosis exposure and had a tuberculin skin test administered. Multivariate linear and logistic regression tested for associations between independent variables and dependent outcomes (tuberculin skin test induration and latent tuberculosis infection status). RESULTS The prevalence of latent tuberculosis infection was 34.4%. Latent tuberculosis infection was highest in those working for more than eight years (39.3%), those who had no BCG vaccination (39.6%) and were immunocompromised (78.1%). Being immunocompromised was significantly associated with latent tuberculosis infection (OR 5.97 [95% CI 1.89; 18.87]). Positive but non-significant associations occurred with working in the medical domain (OR 1.02 [95% CI 0.17; 6.37]), length of employment > eight years (OR 1.97 [95% CI 0.70; 5.53]) and occupational contact with tuberculosis patients (OR 1.24 [95% CI 0.47; 3.27]). CONCLUSIONS Personal and occupational factors were positively associated with latent tuberculosis infection among healthcare workers in Mozambique.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS The tuberculin skin test (TST) and interferon γ release assay are currently used as diagnostic tools to detect latent tuberculosis (TB) infection; however, there are inconsistencies about the degree of agreement between the tests. We aimed to evaluate the concordance rate between the two tests in household contacts of a country with intermediate TB burden, where most people were vaccinated. METHODS We recruited household contacts who spent > 8 hours daily with patients with microbiologically confirmed active pulmonary TB, and received both TST and T-SPOT.TB (Oxford Immunotec) simultaneously. The degree of agreement was analysed according to TST cutoff and Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccination status. Relevant factors were analysed to establish the association with TST or T-SPOT.TB. RESULTS Among 298 household contacts, 122 (40.9%) were spouses, and 250 (83.9%) had received BCG vaccination. In the contact sources, 117 (39.3%) showed a positive result for acid-fast bacillus (AFB) sputum smear and 109 (36.6%) had cavities. The highest agreement rate of 69.5% and κ value of 0.378 were found with a 10 mm cutoff. Spouse, time interval from TB diagnosis to test, and AFB sputum smear positivity were significantly associated with a positive result for T-SPOT.TB. Sex, BCG vaccination, and cavity on chest computed tomography were related to TST positivity. CONCLUSIONS The present study suggested it was not possible for TST and T-SPOT.TB to replace each other because of considerable discrepancy between the two tests in household contacts in a country with intermediate TB prevalence.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS The objective of this prospective study was to evaluate the diagnosis and treatment of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in adult close contacts of active pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) patients in Korea. METHODS Adult close contacts of active pulmonary TB patients were recruited at a regional tertiary hospital in Korea. The participants were tested for LTBI using the tuberculin skin test (TST) and/or QuantiFERON-TB Gold (QFT-G) test. LTBI patients, who consented to treatment, were randomly assigned to receive isoniazid for 9 months (9INH) or rifampin for 4 months (4RIF). RESULTS We examined 189 adult close contacts (> 18 years) of 107 active pulmonary TB patients. The TST and QFT-G were positive (≥ 10 mm) in 75/183 (39.7%) and 45/118 (38.1%) tested participants, respectively. Among 88 TST or QFT-G positive LTBI participants, 45 participants were randomly assigned to receive 4RIF (n = 21) or 9INH (n = 24), respectively. The average treatment duration for the 4RIF and 9INH groups was 3.3 ± 1.3 and 6.1 ± 2.7 months, respectively. Treatment was completed in 25 participants (4RIF, n = 16; 9INH, n = 9). LTBI participants who accepted treatment were more likely to be women and have more cavitary lesions on the chest radiographs of index cases and positive TST and QFT-G results compared to those who refused treatment. CONCLUSIONS About 40% of adult close contacts of active pulmonary TB patients had LTBI; about 50% of these LTBI participants agreed to treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) rate is usually high in contacts with infectious TB patients. In TB-prevalent country, however, background LTBI rate is already high in general population. AIM To compare the LTBI rate between controls and recognized close contacts. METHOD Between February 2010 and January 2014, 183 controls and 376 contacts with TB infection were enrolled. The tuberculin skin test (TST) and QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube (QFT-GIT) were used to diagnose LTBI. RESULTS Higher TST positivity was found in the control group than in the contact group (37.7% vs. 29.9%, P = 0.073). The positive QFT-GIT rate was higher in contacts than in controls (32.6% vs. 24.1%, P = 0.054). A significantly higher positive QFT-GIT rate was found in contacts under 30 years of age than in controls (16.1% vs. 0%, P = 0.005). CONCLUSION In a TB-prevalent country, both TST and QFT-GIT were limited in the diagnosis of recent LTBI in adult contacts probably due to the high background LTBI rate. However, QFT-GIT seems to be better than TST in differentiating LTBI status in contacts younger than 30 year old.
