Abstract
Blood transfusion saves millions of lives each year. It is a well-established treatment, and many procedures are applied to avoid transmitted infections. However, throughout the history of transfusion medicine, many infectious diseases arose or were recognised, bringing up an impact on the blood supply, as the difficulties in diagnosing new diseases, the decrease in blood donors, the challenges for the medical team, the risks for the receptor and the related costs. This study aims to review historically the principal infectious diseases transmitted through the blood that circulated worldwide in the 20th and 21st centuries, considering the impact on the blood banks. Despite the current blood bank control of transfusion risks and the hemovigilance improvements, transmitted and emerging infections can still compromise the blood bank supply, as we have witnessed during the first waves of the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, new pathogens will continue emerging, and we must be prepared for the future.

Abstract
Since 2013, a dengue epidemic has broken out in Yunnan, China and neighboring countries. However, after the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019, the number of dengue cases decreased significantly. In this retrospective study, epidemiological and genetic diversity characterizations of dengue viruses (DENV) isolated in Yunnan between 2017 and 2018 were performed. The results showed that the dengue outbreak in Yunnan from 2017 to 2018 was mainly caused by DENV1 (genotype I and genotype V) and DENV2 (Asia I, Asia II, and Cosmopolitan). Furthermore, correlation analysis indicated a significant positive correlation between the number of imported and local cases (correlation coefficient = 0.936). Multiple sequence alignment and phylogenetic divergence analysis revealed that the local isolates are closely related to the isolates from Myanmar and Laos. Interestingly, recombination analysis found that the DENV1 and DENV2 isolates in this study had widespread intra-serotype recombination. Taken together, the results of the epidemiological investigation imply that the dengue outbreak in Yunnan was primarily due to imported cases. This study provides a new reference for further investigations on the prevalence and molecular epidemiology of DENV in Yunnan, China.

Abstract
In recent decades, the global incidence of dengue has risen sharply, with more than 75% of infected people showing mild or no symptoms. Since the year 2000, dengue in China has spread quickly. At this stage, there is an urgent need to fully understand its transmission intensity and spread in China. Serological data provide reliable evidence for symptomatic and recessive infections. Through a literature search, we included 23 studies that collected age-specific serological dengue data released from 1980 to 2021 in China. Fitting four catalytic models to these data, we distinguished the transmission mechanisms by deviation information criterion and estimated force of infection and basic reproduction number (R0), important parameters for quantifying transmission intensity. We found that transmission intensity varies over age in most of the study populations, and attenuation of antibody protection is identified in some study populations; the R0 of dengue in China is between 1.04-2.33. Due to the scarceness of the data, the temporal trend cannot be identified, but data shows that transmission intensity weakened from coastal to inland areas and from southern to northern areas in China if assuming it remained temporally steady during the study period. The results should be useful for the effective control of dengue in China.

Abstract
Mosquitoes are important vector hosts for numerous viral pathogens and harbor a large number of mosquito-specific viruses as well as human-infecting viruses. Previous studies have mainly focused on the discovery of mosquito viruses, and our understanding of major ecological factors associated with virome structure in mosquitoes remains limited. We utilized metatranscriptomic sequencing to characterize the viromes of five mosquito species sampled across eight locations in Yunnan Province, China. This revealed the presence of 52 viral species, of which 19 were novel, belonging to 15 viral families/clades. Of particular note was Culex hepacivirus 1, clustering within the avian clade of hepaciviruses. Notably, both the viromic diversity and abundance of Aedes genus mosquitoes were significantly higher than those of the Culex genus, while Aedes albopictus mosquitoes harbored a higher diversity than Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. Our findings thus point to discernible differences in viromic structure between mosquito genera and even between mosquito species within the same genus. Importantly, such differences were not attributable to differences in sampling between geographical location. Our study also revealed the ubiquitous presence of the endosymbiont bacterium Wolbachia, with the genetic diversity and abundance also varying between mosquito species. In conclusion, our results suggested that the mosquito host species play an important role in shaping the virome's structure. IMPORTANCE This study revealed the huge capability of mosquitoes in harboring a rich diversity of RNA viruses, although relevant studies have characterized the intensively unparalleled diversity of RNA viruses previously. Furthermore, our findings showed discernible differences not only in viromic structure between mosquito genera and even between mosquito species within the same genus but also in the genetic diversity and abundance of Wolbachia between different mosquito populations. These findings emphasize the importance of host genetic background in shaping the virome composition of mosquitoes.

Abstract
Background The risk of transfusion transmitted dengue (DENV) is increasingly recognized and poses a risk to blood safety as well as spreading into non-immune communities. Objectives To determine dengue serological profile, environmental risk, knowledge, and preventive measures among blood donors in a national blood bank in northern Egypt. Methods A total of 500 blood donors were enrolled into this study between June and September 2018. Socio-demographic and medical data were collected using a predesigned questionnaire. Blood samples were screened for anti-DENV IgM, anti-DENV IgG and non-structural protein 1 antigen (DENV-NS1 antigen). Results History of past dengue exposure was identified in 10.2% of blood donors. No samples (0.0%) tested positive for anti-DENV IgG, IgM or NS1 antigen. At the time of blood donation, no individuals had any symptoms suggestive of a dengue-related illness. Dengue exposure strongly correlated with travel to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), Sudan and the El-Quseir outbreak area in Egypt. Knowledge of dengue and prevention methods was found to be substantially deficient, and the relatively higher level of knowledge among exposed donors did not translate into appropriate preventative measures. Conclusions Our risk assessment shows the impact of travel on DENV exposure and highlights its potential threat to disease spread in Egypt. Dengue awareness programs are urgently needed for effective prevention of transmission.

Abstract
Sedoreoviridae is a family of viruses belonging to the order Reovirales and comprises six genera, two of which, Orbivirus and Seadornavirus, contain arboviruses that cause disease in humans and livestock. Areas such as Yunnan Province in southwestern China, have high arboviral activity due in part to warm and wet summers, which support high populations of biting flies such as mosquitoes and Culicoides. Three viral isolates previously obtained from Culicoides collected at cattle farms in Shizong County of Yunnan Province, China, between 2019 and 2020 were completely sequenced and identified as Banna virus (BAV) genotype A of Seadornavirus and serotypes 1 and 7 of epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV) of Orbivirus. These results suggest that Culicoidestainanus and C. orientalis are potential vectors of BAV and EHDV, respectively, and represent the first association of a BAV with C. tainanus and of an arbovirus with C. orientalis. Analysis using VP9 generally agreed with the current groupings within this genus based on VP12, although the classification for some strains should be corrected. Furthermore, the placement of Kadipiro virus (KDV) and Liao ning virus (LNV) in Seadornavirus may need confirmation as phylogenetic analysis placed these viruses as sister to other species in the genus.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Transmission of dengue by transfusion of blood products has been documented, although the frequency of these occurrences and the level of viremia required to cause clinical dengue are unknown. The primary objective was to assess the prevalence of dengue NS1 antigen among healthy blood donors at our blood center. METHODOLOGY: This was a cross-sectional study conducted in the Department of Transfusion Medicine, a tertiary care hospital in South-eastern India, from February 2019 to January 2020. A total of 968 donor samples were included in the study. Dengue NS1 antigen detection was done using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Data regarding clinical, epidemiological, and demographic characteristics were collected from the donor questionnaire and records. RESULTS: In the study, the overall prevalence of Dengue NS1 antigen was 0.9%, with nine positive samples among the 968 samples tested. Eight of them were male, and 1 was a female donor. All of them were in the age group <32 years. Half of the positive donors were detected during December-January, the immediate post rainy season in this part of the country. Two-third of the positive donors were from rural areas. CONCLUSION: This study with a 0.9% throws light on the seroepidemiological prevalence of dengue among asymptomatic donors and gives an insight into whether dengue screening is required to be implemented in routine transfusion transmissible infection screening in blood transfusion services and shall assist in devising strategies to be adapted as to improve the blood safety.

Abstract
Dengue is endemic in Brazil, and several Brazilian cities are affected by frequent seasonal outbreaks of the disease. During the outbreaks the possibility of transfusion-transmitted dengue (TTD) is increased, mainly by the presence of asymptomatic or oligosymptomatic infections in eligible blood donors. The retrospective assessment of anti-DENV IgM and NS1 seroprevalence during a given time interval may indicate the need for measures for the previous screening of DENV infection in blood donors. In this context, we performed retrospective screening for anti-DENV IgM and NS1 in blood donors from the Federal District of Brazil during the early outbreak that occurred in 2019, the largest outbreak in recent years. In total, 450 blood donations were screened for anti-DENV IgM and DENV NS1 using commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits (Panbio Dengue IgM Capture ELISA and Platelia Dengue NS1 Ag, respectively). Among the tested plasma samples, 16 % (72/450) presented anti-DENV IgM; no samples presented DENV NS1. Despite the apparent absence of antigenaemia in tested blood donations, the high prevalence of anti-DENV IgM highlights the importance of DENV screening in blood donors, principally during outbreak periods.
