Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have suggested an association between low serum bilirubin concentrations and increased risk of cognitive impairment. This study aimed to explore the association and dose-response relationship between serum direct bilirubin (DBIL) concentrations and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) among hemodialysis patients. METHODS This is a multicenter cross-sectional study with patients undergoing hemodialysis from 22 dialysis centers in Guizhou Province, China. The outcome was mild cognitive impairment (MCI), measured with a Mini-Mental State Examination. The association and dose-response relationship between serum DBIL and MCI incidence were examined using multivariate logistic regression analysis, restricted cubic spline, and subgroup analysis to explore the association of serum DBIL concentrations with MCI. RESULTS Of the 4223 enrolled patients (mean age 55.2 ± 15.3 years, 60.4% males), 1187 (28.1%) had MCI. Serum DBIL of 0.10-1.67umol/L [multivariable-adjusted odds ratios (OR) 1.32, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.08-1.60, P = 0.005], 2.31-3.20umol/L (OR = 1.22, 95%CI: 1.00-1.49, P = 0.047), and > 3.21umol/L (OR = 1.32, 95%CI: 1.08-1.61, P = 0.006) had increased risk of MCI compared with 1.68-2.30umol/L. The dose-response analysis between serum DBIL and MCI showed a U-shaped relationship (P for non-linearity = 0.009), and the serum DBIL concentrations with the lowest risk of MCI was 2.01umol/L. As the serum DBIL concentrations were lower than the reference, the risk of MCI decreased by 49% per standard deviation (SD) increase in serum DBIL (OR = 0.51, 95%CI: 0.29-0.89, P < 0.001); when the concentration exceeds 2.01umol/L, a rise per SD increased the risk of MCI by 9% (OR = 1.09, 95%CI:1.01-1.17, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION Our findings suggest a U-shaped association between serum DBIL and MCI among hemodialysis patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the effects of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) on cognitive functions, mental improvements, and adverse effects in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). METHODS Registered in INPLASY (INPLASY202450004), five drugs (citalopram, s-citalopram, quetiapine, olanzapine, and sertraline) were selected as representatives. A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library up to May 15, 2024. Search terms were combined using Boolean operators, specifically 'AND' between different categories (e.g., 'Alzheimer's Disease' AND 'SSRIs') and 'OR' within the same category (e.g., 'citalopram OR s-citalopram OR quetiapine OR olanzapine OR sertraline'), to ensure a thorough retrieval of relevant studies. The selection followed rigorous inclusion and exclusion criteria for meta-analysis. RESULTS Fourteen articles from 1118 were selected for meta-analysis. The indicators, including Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI), Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS), and Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia (CSDD), were used to assess the effects of the drugs on AD treatment. According to the results of NPI, CSDD, BPRS, MMSE, and security assessments, the five antidepressants have significant advantages in AD treatment compared with placebo, while the MMSE of the patient treated with the antidepressants did not show notable changes compared with patients treated only with placebo. Statistical analyses were conducted using Review Manager 5.3, employing random-effects models to account for study heterogeneity and sensitivity analyses to test the robustness of our findings. CONCLUSION This study suggests that SSRI-related antidepressants have great potential values in AD treatment, and further research on the application of SSRI-related antidepressants in AD treatment is necessary.

Abstract
Biliverdin reductase-A (BVRA) is a multi-functional enzyme with a multitude of important roles in physiologic redox homeostasis. Classically, BVRA is well known for converting the heme metabolite biliverdin to bilirubin, which is a potent antioxidant in both the periphery and the brain. However, BVRA additionally participates in many neuroprotective signaling cascades in the brain that preserve cognition. Here, we review the neuroprotective roles of BVRA and bilirubin in the brain, which together constitute a BVRA/bilirubin axis that influences healthy aging and cognitive function.

Abstract
Rationale Overactive bladder (OAB) is a common, distressing condition that worsens with age and impacts quality of life significantly. As a results of its clinical symptoms, patients suffer from serious physical and mental health issues, have a poor quality of life, and participate in a serious economic burden. The key social-psychological factors include living habits, eating habits, and personality characteristics on this disease, even though the pathogenesis of OAB is complex. However, there is few cognitions and research on OAB in the field of psychology. Methods/Search Strategy Between 2000 and 2022, two electronic databases were systematically searched in accordance with Cochrane library guidelines (PubMed/Medline, Web of Science). An analysis of the remaining articles with relevant information was conducted using a data extraction sheet. An itemized flow diagram was adopted and used to report systematic reviews and meta-analysis. A systematic review of studies published from 2000 to 2022 in English language were conducted and included in the review. The intended audience Urological surgeon and psychologists majoring in urinary diseases. Implication As a result of this information, we are able to develop a better understanding of the role of psychological factors in the development of OAB and suggest potential therapeutic directions for OAB patients. This may benefit the recovery of OAB patients.

Abstract
Background Previous studies suggested protective effects of bilirubin against cardiovascular disease, with a possible gender difference. However, the relationship between serum total bilirubin (TBIL) with diabetic macro- and microvascular complications remains unknown. We aimed to examine the association of macro- and microvascular complications with serum TBIL levels. Methods Serum TBIL was measured in 648 patients with T2DM. Demographic and clinical data were obtained from the inpatient medical record system. Serum TBIL was measured with an automatic biochemistry analyzer according to routine protocols. Parameters of vascular complications, including ankle-brachial index, carotid intima-media thickness, estimated glomerular filtration rate and the urinary albumin to creatinine ratio, were measured and calculated. The association between TBIL and diabetic macro- and microvascular complications was analyzed. Results In multivariable logistic regression, after adjustment for age, sex, body mass index and diabetic duration, higher serum TBIL levels were significantly associated with decreased odds of microalbuminuria (OR = 0.31, [95% CI] 0.16-0.61, P = 0.003) and chronic kidney disease (OR = 0.19, [95% CI] 0.09-0.41, P < 0.001). These associations were only found in male but not in female patients. However, no significant relationship was found between TBIL and peripheral arterial disease or carotid hypertrophy. Conclusion Our findings suggest that physiological higher TBIL level might be a protective factor for diabetic microvascular complications.
