Correlation between mean body mass index in the population and prevalence of obesity in Brazilian capitals: empirical evidence for a population-based approach of obesity

Obesity and Associated Factors in Brazilian Adults: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Representative Studies

To review the literature and select population-based studies that are representative of Brazilian capitals or Brazil as a whole to estimate the prevalence of obesity among Brazilian adults. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) were used. The search was conducted in six databases and reference lists of included studies. We included observational studies but excluded interventional studies, reviews, in vitro studies, and editorials. The study population consisted of young adults and adults (18 to 59 years old). Adolescents, infants, children, the elderly, and pregnant women were excluded. The primary outcomes were the prevalence of obesity among Brazilian adults, both men and women. The secondary outcomes were factors associated with obesity. The meta-analysis was performed using Rstudio software, version 4.1.0, by using the 'Meta' package, version 5.0-0. The search strategy identified 5634 references, of which 19 studies and 21 national surveys were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled prevalence of obesity in Brazilian adults was 20.0% (95% CI: 14.0-25.0%) while in the capitals it was 17.0% (95% CI: 16.0-19.0%). Across the regions of Brazil, the prevalence ranged from 11.0% to 17.0%, with the highest frequency in the south. Increases in obesity prevalence were observed for both sexes in almost all periods, with consistently higher rates among women in most cases. The prevalence of obesity among Brazilian adults is high, with no statistically significant differences found in the subgroup analysis.

Vitamin D supplementation combined with aerobic physical exercise restores the cell density in hypothalamic nuclei of rats exposed to monosodium glutamate

BACKGROUND & AIMS

In view of the increase in the prevalence of obesity and metabolic syndrome in childhood and adolescence, this study proposed the early and combined use of treatments to restore brain areas related to satiety. The vitamin D supplementation, aerobic exercise and the combination of these interventions on the structure of arcuate (ARC) and ventromedial (VMH) nuclei of hypothalamus were investigated in monosodium glutamate (MSG)-treated rats.

METHODS

Wistar rats were separated into five groups: Control group (CT); Obese group injected with MSG (OB); Obese group supplemented with vitamin D (OBvd); Obese group submitted to forced swimming training (OBexe) and Obese group treated with vitamin D supplementation and forced swimming training (OBvd + exe).

RESULTS

In the OB group, the visceral fat weight was significantly higher, there was a reduction in the number of glial cells in the ARC nucleus and also in the number of neurons in the ARC and VMH nuclei. Aerobic exercise was able to reduce the visceral fat weight in the OBexe group. The combination of treatments used in the OBvd + exe group reversed the loss of neurons and glial cells produced by MSG in the ARC nucleus. All treated groups exhibited a higher number of neurons in VMH nucleus, but an increase in the glial cells were observed only in the OBexe and OBvd + exe groups.

CONCLUSIONS

The effectiveness of obesity treatment can be favored through the early and combined use of vitamin D supplementation and aerobic exercise, since these therapies are able to restore brain nuclei involved in the control of food intake.

Valores médios percorridos no teste de caminhada de seis minutos em crianças saudáveis de Coari (AM)

RESUMO O objetivo desta pesquisa foi estabelecer valores médios percorridos para o teste de caminhada de seis minutos em crianças saudáveis no Norte do Brasil. Este foi um estudo experimental, randomizado, cego e transversal que avaliou 63 crianças saudáveis do sexo masculino e feminino, de 10 a 12 anos, que após terem seus dados antropométricos registrados foram treinadas e instruídas para a realização do teste conforme recomendações da American Thoracic Society, após avaliação-padrão. O teste foi realizado numa pista reta de 30 metros, com marcações a cada 3 metros e cones indicando onde o retorno deveria ser feito para a continuidade do teste. Ao final, foi refeita a avaliação pré-teste. Foi observado índice de massa corporal muito baixo nos meninos de 11 anos, e normal nas outras faixas. A frequência cardíaca imediata pós-teste apresentou-se significativamente elevada em todos os grupos (p<0,001), enquanto todos os outros dados cardiovasculares colhidos não apresentaram alterações. As distâncias percorridas foram significativamente inferiores às previstas por equação-padrão para todos os grupos e sexos (p<0,0001). O valor médio percorrido encontrado em meninas foi de 436,30±56,74m e 460,80±63,90m em meninos, enquanto a média geral foi de 445,70±54,10m, abaixo dos valores esperados para a amostra. O resultado obtido pelo grupo estudado, menor que a média esperada, pode ser creditado ao fenótipo regional, mas o Índice de Desenvolvimento muito mais baixo que a média brasileira deve ter sua influência mais bem estudada. Espera-se que os achados contribuam no apontamento de valores de referência do teste em crianças do Norte brasileiro.

Association between population mean and distribution of deviance in demographic surveys from 65 countries: cross sectional study

OBJECTIVES

To examine whether conditions related to scarcity at the left side of the distribution (anaemia, severe chronic energy deficiency, and underweight) are as strongly related to population means as conditions of excess at the right side of the distribution (overweight and obesity).

DESIGN

Observational study.

SETTING

65 countries, with nationally representative cross sectional data from 1994 to 2014 obtained from the Demographic Health Surveys.

PARTICIPANTS

Non-pregnant women aged 20-49. Sample of 65 countries and n=524 380 for analysis of BMI; sample of 44 countries and n=316 465 for analysis of haemoglobin.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

The association between mean and prevalence of each category. For BMI, prevalence of severe chronic energy deficiency (SCED, BMI <16.0), underweight (BMI <18.5), overweight (BMI >25) and obese (BMI >30.) were measured; for haemoglobin, prevalence of anaemia (haemoglobin <12.0 g/dL) and severe anaemia (haemoglobin <8.0 g/dL) were examined.

RESULTS

There was a strong association between mean BMI and prevalence of overweight (r²=0.98; r=0.99; β=8.3 (8.0 to 8.6)) and obesity (r²=0.93; r=0.97; β=4.2 (3.9 to 4.5)). For left sided conditions, a moderate to strong association was found between mean BMI and prevalence of underweight (r²=0.67; r=-0.82; β=-2.7 (-3.1 to -2.2)), and a weaker association for SCED (r²=0.38; r=-0.61; β=-0.32 (-0.43 to -0.22)). There was a moderate association between mean haemoglobin and prevalence of anaemia (r²=0.46; r=-0.68; β=-10.8 (-14.5 to -7.1)) and a weaker association with severe anaemia (r²=0.30; r=-0.55; β=-0.55 (-0.81 to -0.29)).

CONCLUSIONS

The associations between population means and prevalence of conditions of scarcity such as low BMI and anaemia were substantially weaker than the associations of mean BMI with conditions of excesses such as overweight and obesity.

The need to consume: Hoarding as a shared psychological feature of compulsive buying and binge eating

INTRODUCTION

Compulsive buying and binge eating are two frequently co-occurring psychiatric conditions. Hoarding, which is the psychological need to excessively gather and store items, is frequently associated with both compulsive buying severity and binge eating severity. In the present study, we explored whether different dimensions of hoarding are a shared feature of compulsive buying and binge eating.

METHOD

Participants consisted of 434 people seeking treatment for compulsive buying disorder. Registered psychiatrists confirmed the diagnosis of compulsive buying through semi-structured clinical interviews. Participants also completed measures to assess compulsive buying severity, binge eating severity, and dimensions of hoarding (acquisition, difficulty discarding, and clutter). Two-hundred and seven participants completed all three measures.

RESULTS

Significant correlations were found between compulsive buying severity and the acquisition dimension of hoarding. Binge eating severity was significantly correlated with all three dimensions of hoarding. Hierarchical regression analysis found that compulsive buying severity was a significant predictor of binge eating severity. However, compulsive buying severity no longer predicted binge eating severity when the dimensions of hoarding were included simultaneously in the model. Clutter was the only subscale of hoarding to predict binge eating severity in step two of the regression analysis.

CONCLUSION

Our results suggest that the psychological need to excessively gather and store items may constitute a shared process that is important in understanding behaviors characterized by excessive consumption such as compulsive buying and binge eating.
