Abstract
This study determines the association between adult Saudi Arabian coffee consumption and serum iron levels. The extensive Saudi Arabian population, including both sexes - male and female, participated in this cross-sectional community-based study from 1 October 2020 to 31 June 2022. The participants were selected arbitrarily using the systematic simple random position. The current study enrolled 113 participants with a mean age of 33 years, including 94 (83.2%) females and 19 (16.8%) males. The concentration of iron absorption assessed among 62 individuals who participated in the group of occasional coffee drinkers was higher (54.9%) than the 51 individuals who participated in the group of regular coffee drinkers (45.1%). In daily coffee consumption, paired samples statistics in mean baseline WBC level (103/μl) was 6.396. On day 31 of June 2022, WBC level (103/μl) was 6.114. Paired samples statistics in mean baseline iron level was 44.29. On day 31 of June 2022, iron level was 72.15. The paired samples correlation in baseline and day 31 iron levels was 0.719, with a significant difference of 0.000. It is critical to acquire the most recent information and local statistics on the frequency of low serum iron levels in Saudi Arabia's diverse adult population. The adult population of Saudi Arabia correlates with coffee consumption and changes in serum ferritin or iron levels and WBC counts. Neither the WBC numbers nor the iron levels were significantly altered. Further research is needed to determine the potential mechanisms causing these relationships.

Abstract
Introduction Anaemia remains a primary concern of public health in developing countries. Indigenous populations are a significant and frequently underreported group at risk for anaemia. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of anaemia and identify its determinants in the Temiar sub-ethnic indigenous Orang Asli (OA) community in Peninsular Malaysia. Methodology A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 640 indigenous Temiar OA participants from a remote settlement in Gua Musang, Kelantan, Malaysia. Data was collected using face-to-face interviews with a standardised pretested questionnaire and through blood samples collected for haemoglobin (Hb) testing. Anaemia status was determined using the Hb level cut-off established by the World Health Organization (WHO). Descriptive analysis was used to determine the prevalence of anaemia, while multiple logistic regression was used to determine factors associated with anaemia. Results The overall anaemia prevalence was 44.7% (286/640), and the prevalence rates of mild, moderate and severe anaemia were 42.7, 50.7 and 6.6%, respectively. Anaemia-specific prevalence varied significantly by age group (p < 0.001) and was highest in the ≤5 group for both moderate anaemia (43.4%) and severe (42.1%), followed by the 6-17 age group for mild anaemia (39.3%). The prevalence of anaemia was also highest among students (53.9%), with a significant difference observed between the three anaemia severity classifications (p = 0.002). In the multivariate logistic regression, only age groups of 6-17 (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 0.38, p < 0.001), 18-40 (aOR 0.18, p < 0.001) and > 40 (aOR 0.25, p < 0.001) were significantly associated with the lower odds of anaemia in the population. Conclusion This study has highlighted the high prevalence of anaemia among indigenous OA in Peninsular Malaysia and revealed that younger children were positively associated with childhood anaemia. Effective interventions and special attention to this indigenous population need to be implemented to reduce the risk of anaemia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Since 2000, only a few countries have substantially reduced the burden of anemia among women 15-49 y of age. The Exemplars in Anemia Reduction among Women of Reproductive Age (WRA) studied the determinants of success among these countries. OBJECTIVES To describe the methodology used to determine the factors associated with anemia reduction in high-performing countries, with the aim to guide policy and programmatic decisions in other countries with similar sociodemographic and health indices. METHODS This article describes the process used to identify countries with exemplary reduction in WRA anemia burden, compared with their peers. We describe the Exemplars in Global Health methodology, the mixed-methods approach used to identify and quantify the macro- and microlevel characteristics associated with anemia burden decline among WRA. Quantitative analyses include descriptive and equity analyses, multivariate linear regression, and Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition analysis. Qualitative analyses include in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with national, subnational, and community stakeholders, as well as review of programs and policies with the potential to impact women's health and/or nutrition, enacted in the countries over the last 20 y. A technical advisory group oversaw all research activities. RESULTS We identified 5 countries, namely, Mexico, Pakistan, Philippines, Uganda, and Senegal, as anemia exemplars, after considering the magnitude of anemia decline between 2000 and 2018, availability of ≥2 nationally representative anemia surveys, geographical diversity to account for the complex etiology of anemia, regional representation, and logistics of in-country work. CONCLUSIONS Exemplars in Anemia Reduction among WRA seeks to create awareness of how little anemia prevalence has changed globally and aims to inform and spur global efforts for improving women's health and nutrition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Over one-third of women worldwide suffer from anaemia. The prevalence of anaemia is particularly pronounced among women of reproductive age (WRA) in developing countries, such as India. No prior study has ever exclusively studied the prevalence of anaemia across the Aspirational Districts of India. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence of anaemia across Aspirational Districts of India and to identify the determinants of anaemia among WRA in these districts. METHODS From the National Family Health Survey (NFHS)-4 (2015-16) and NFHS-5 (2019-21), data on 114,444 and 108,782 women aged 15-49 from Aspirational Districts were analyzed in our study, respectively. Bivariate statistics and multivariable binary logistic regression were used to identify the determinants of anaemia. RESULTS The national prevalence of anaemia among WRA has increased from 53% in NFHS-4 to 57% in NFHS-5 whereas anaemia among WRA in Aspirational Districts has increased from 58.7% in NFHS-4 to 61.1% in NFHS-5. Between 2015 and 2021, over 60% of Aspirational Districts experienced an increase in the prevalence of anaemia and one-fourth, specifically 29 out of 112, observed a rise by at least 10 percentage points (pp). Notably, there are significant variations in anaemia prevalence among districts, with Simdega and Udalgiri having the highest anaemia prevalence in NFHS-4 and NFHS-5 at 78.2% and 81.5%, respectively. During this period, Barpeta followed by Udalgiri of Assam have witnessed the maximum increase with 29.4% and 26.7% respectively. Moreover, pooled regression results show women with three to four children [AOR: 1.13, 95% CI: 1.08-1.17], women who breastfeed [AOR: 1.17, 95% CI: 1.13-1.20], Scheduled Tribe women [AOR: 1.39, 95% CI: 1.35-1.44], poorest women [AOR: 1.27, 95% CI: 1.22-1.33] and women those who consume fish occasionally [AOR: 1.14, 95% CI: 1.12-1.17] were more likely to be anaemic. CONCLUSION The significant increase in anaemia among WRA in Aspirational Districts of India is a matter of concern. Given the rise in anaemia among WRA, determinants-based and district-specific measures must be designed and implemented to reduce the prevalence of anaemia among Aspirational Districts of India.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the diagnostic performance of 10 mathematical formulae for identifying thalassemia trait in blood donors. METHODS Compete blood counts were conducted on peripheral blood specimens using the UniCel DxH 800 hematology analyzer. Receiver operating characteristic curves were used to evaluate the diagnostic performance of each mathematical formula. RESULTS In the 66 donors with thalassemia and 288 subjects with no thalassemia analyzed, donors with thalassemia trait had lower values for mean corpuscular volume and mean corpuscular hemoglobin than subjects without thalassemia donors (77 fL vs 86 fL [P < .001]; 25 pg vs 28 pg [P < .001]). The formula developed by Shine and Lal in 1977 showed the highest area under the curve value, namely, 0.9. At the cutoff value of <1812, this formula had maximum specificity of 82.35% and sensitivity of 89.58%. CONCLUSIONS Our data indicate that the Shine and Lal formula has remarkable diagnostic performance in identifying donors with underlying thalassemia trait.

Abstract
The study aims at ascertaining the conditional selection of key indicators affecting severe, moderate, mild, and no anaemia levels for women of reproductive age in India. The secondary data for levels of anaemia and personal records of individuals collected for India from the 7th phase of District Health Survey program of the United States Agency for International Development data depository. The data was cleaned and summarised using frequency and percentages. Then the variables were tested for association with levels of anaemia using the Chi-square (χ2) test. The multinomial logistic regression model was employed to ascertain the key indicators through a conditional selection of reference categories. Results suggest that severe anaemia was significantly prevalent among women in the reproductive stage, especially among the 15-29 age groups. Secondary and higher education had a negative effect on the severity of severe, moderate, and mild anaemia. The poorest wealth index stratum had higher and more significant severe anaemia, and households with two adults of the opposite sex had a significant negative effect (β = -0.116, OR = 0.89, p < 0.001) on severe anaemia level while having a significant positive effect on moderate and mild anaemia. Rural households were associated negatively and significantly with moderate and mild anaemia, and nuclear household structures had a higher prevalence of severe anaemia. Therefore, these indicators across different levels of anaemia should be considered for a faster rate of reduction at the national level. Despite several initiatives by the public sector, the anaemia level has remained elevated among women of reproductive age. Education, wealth index, age, pregnancy, relationship structure, household structure, and place of residence were found to be key indicators for the level of anaemia. The significant variables will act as a crucial input to formulate cost-effective public interventions and finally encourage the faster reduction of anaemia levels.

Abstract
Iron and zinc malnutrition is a global humanitarian concern that mostly affects newborns, children, and women in low- and middle-income countries where plant-based diets are regularly consumed. This kind of malnutrition has the potential to result in a number of immediate and long-term implications, including stunted growth, an elevated risk of infectious diseases, and poor development, all of which may ultimately cause children to not develop to the fullest extent possible. A determination of the contributions from genotype, environment, and genotype by environment interactions is necessary for the production of nutrient-dense lentil varieties that offer greater availability of iron and zinc with a high level of trait stability. Understanding the genotype and environmental parameters that affect G x E (Genotype x Environment) interactions is essential for plant breeding. We used GGE(Genotype, Genotype x Environment interactions) and AMMI (Additive Main effects and Multiplicative Interaction) models to study genetic stability and GE(Genotype x Environment interactions) for grain Fe, Zn, Al, and anti-nutritional factors like phytic acid content in sixteen commercially produced lentil cultivars over several different six geographical locations across India. Significant genetic variability was evident in the Fe and Zn levels of different genotypes of lentils. The amounts of grain iron, zinc, and phytic acid varied from 114.10 to 49.90 mg/kg, 74.62 to 21.90 mg/kg, and 0.76 to 2.84 g/100g (dw) respectively. The environment and GE (Genotype x Environment interactions) had an impact on the concentration of grain Fe, Zn, and phytic acid (PA). Heritability estimations ranged from low to high (53.18% to 99.48%). The study indicated strong correlation between the contents of Fe and Zn, a strategy for simultaneously increasing Fe and Zn in lentils may be recommended. In addition, our research revealed that the stable and ideal lentil varieties L4076 (Pusa Shivalik) for Fe concentration and L4717 (Pusa Ageti) for Zn content, which have lower phytic acid contents, will not only play an essential role as stable donors in the lentil bio-fortification but will also enable the expansion of the growing area of bio-fortified crops for the security of health and nutrition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anemia is a globally well-known major public health problem. In Southeast Asia where there is ethnic diversity, both iron deficiency (ID) and inherited hemoglobin disorders (IHDs) are prevalent and are considered to be the major factors contributing to anemia. However, little is known about the anemia burden among the ethnic minorities. In this study, we determine the burden of anemia, in relation to ID and IHDs, among the Karen ethnic minorities living in the rural area of lower northern Thailand. METHODS A cross-sectional community-based study was conducted at Ban Rai district, Uthai Thani province. Study participants included 337 Karen people aged over 18 years. Socio-economic and health-related information were obtained through interviews and recorded by local health staff. Anemia, IHDs and ID were diagnosed according to standard laboratory methods. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was applied to identify risk factors of moderate-to-severe anemia. RESULTS The prevalence of overall anemia was 27.9% (95% CI = 23.2-33.0). Mild and moderate anemia were detected in 18.7% (95% CI = 14.7-23.3) and 8.9% (95% CI = 6.1-12.5) respectively. Severe anemia was found in one case (0.3%). Various forms of IHDs were identified in 166 participants, constituting 49.3% (95% CI = 43.8-54.7). The most common form of IHDs was α+-thalassemia (32.9%), followed by β-thalassemia (12.2%), α0-thalassemia (4.2%), hemoglobin E (3.9%), and hemoglobin Constant Spring (0.9%). Among 308 participants who were investigated for ID, the prevalence was discovered to be 6.8% (95% CI = 4.3-10.2). Analysis of risk factors of moderate-to-severe anemia revealed that individuals with ID, β-thalassemia and age > 65 years were at high risk with adjusted odds ratio of 17 (95% CI = 3.8-75.2), 6.2 (95% CI = 1.4-27.8) and 8.1 (95% CI = 1.6-40.4) respectively. CONCLUSIONS Anemia among the Karen is of public health significance; and IHDs are the major contributing factors. Because of the high risk of developing moderate-to-severe anemia, special attention should be paid to individuals affected with ID, β-thalassemia and the elderly. Public awareness of the health burden of severe thalassemia syndromes should also be campaigned.

Abstract
Maize is the staple food crop for millions of people in sub-Saharan Africa. Iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn) deficiency is a significant health risk that mainly affects low-income populations who rely solely on maize-based diets. This problem can be alleviated by developing micronutrient-rich maize grain. The aim of this study was to determine the adaptation and performance of hybrids for Fe and Zn concentration and grain yield under low soil nitrogen (N) and optimal conditions. Eighteen hybrids derived from lines and testers with low, medium, and high Fe and Zn concentration were grown during the summer rainy seasons of 2017 and 2018 at three locations under low and optimal N conditions. There were significant genotype and environment effects for grain yield, and Fe and Zn concentration, but the genotype by environment interaction effects were the largest, accounting for between 36% and 56% of variation under low N conditions. Low N levels significantly reduced grain yield, and Fe and Zn concentration. Hybrids G1, G2, G4, G7, G10, G11, and G16 were relatively stable, with relatively high mean Fe and Zn concentrations, and low additive main effects and multiplicative interaction (AMMI) stability values and iron stability index (FSI) and zinc stability index (ZSI) under low N conditions. These genotypes can be considered for production under low N stress conditions. Two environments (E4 and E3) were identified for good discriminatory power for genotype performance in terms of Fe and Zn content, respectively. Stable and high-yielding genotypes with high Fe and Zn concentration can be used as biofortified hybrids, which can contribute to a sustainable solution to malnutrition in the region, especially under low N conditions.

Nutritional and health status of adult Syrian refugees in the early years of asylum in Germany: a cross-sectional pilot study. BMC Public Health 2022; 22:2217. Abstract
BACKGROUND Migration is usually accompanied by changes in the social, cultural, and religious environment, socioeconomic status, and housing conditions, all of which affect nutritional health. In a cross-sectional study, we assessed the dietary intake as well as nutritional and health situation in a population of Syrian refugees who have resided in Germany for at least six months up to four years since 2015. The primary aim of this pilot study was to evaluate the nutritional and health status in comparison to reference values. METHODS Between December 2018 and March 2020, 114 adult Syrian refugees were included in the study. The subjects filled out questionnaires on sociodemographic variables, exercise, and nutrition behavior (three-day nutrition record). After a fasting blood draw, the subjects were examined for anthropometric parameters (height, weight, body mass index, waist circumference, waist-hip ratio, and body composition via a bioelectrical impedance analyzer). Various blood markers including iron status, hematological parameters, Vitamin D status, lipid metabolism, glucose metabolism, and total homocysteine (tHcy) were measured. RESULTS About half of the participants (71 male, 43 female) had lived in Germany for less than three years. Over 60% of men and 30% of women were overweight (BMI 25-30 kg/m2) or obese (BMI > 30 kg/m2), while 79% of men and 74% of women observed an elevated body fat mass. The evaluation of the three-day nutrition records revealed an unfavorable supply situation for numerous critical nutrients. More than half of the women (53.5%) had depleted iron stores (serum ferritin < 15 µg/l). The 25-OH-Vitamin D blood levels showed a high prevalence of Vitamin D insufficiency (25-49.9 nmol/l: 38% of men and 21% of women) and deficiency (< 25 nmol/l: 44% of men and 70% of women). 83% of men and 67% of women showed tHcy levels in plasma > 10 nmol/l. Fasting insulin levels and the HOMA-IR index indicate a risk for insulin resistance. Hyperlipidemia was prevalent, especially in males with 24% showing hypertriglyceridemia (> 150 mg/dl) and LDL-hypercholesterolemia (> 130 mg/dl). CONCLUSIONS The nutritional and health status of the cohort of Syrian refugees in Germany examined in this study is unsatisfactory, and many of the investigated refugees are at risk for developing cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Further studies are required to investigate the nutritional and health situation of refugees. This is obligatory to find ways to avoid malnutrition with all its associated health, sociodemographic, and economic consequences.

Abstract
Anemia is a major public health problem in many areas of Southeast Asia. Ascertaining anemia and defining its underlying causes is essential for providing appropriate care, management, and establishment of a control program. Limited studies on these have been carried out on people living at the borders of Thailand, Lao PDR, and Cambodia. This cross-sectional study was done in four areas along the borders of Thailand, Lao PDR, and Cambodia. Blood specimens were collected from subjects aged 15-18 years in four districts including Kantharalak, Si Sa Ket province (n = 36), Nam Khun (n = 109), Nam Yuen (n = 98), and Na Chaluai (n = 128), Ubon Ratchathani province, Thailand. RBC parameters were recorded, and serum ferritin (SF) level was measured. Diagnosis of thalassemia and hemoglobinopathies was based on hemoglobin (Hb) and DNA analyses. Measurement of C-reactive protein was performed to exclude false-negative result of iron deficiency. The prevalence of anemia was found to be 25.1%. ID accounted for only 10.5%. Various types of thalassemia were identified in 67.7% of the subjects. The overall prevalence of thalassemia included 3.5% α0-thalassemia, 0.8% β-thalassemia, 47.7% Hb E, and 53.6% α+-thalassemia. The proportions of ID, thalassemia and combined ID and thalassemia among anemic subjects were 6.5%, 66.6%, and 20.4%, respectively. The results indicate that thalassemia and hemoglobinopathies rather than ID are major causes of anemia in Thailand-Lao PDR-Cambodia triangle. This information should prove useful for implementing an anemia control program in the regions.

Abstract
This study aims to identify the relationship between blood donation and malignant and benign tumour hospitalization risk. The cohort study was constructed in Shaanxi, China, to include blood donors and match nonblood donors one-to-one by gender, age, and county of residence. The study compared the hospitalization records of two groups from 2012 to 2018. A log-binomial regression model was used to estimate the relative risk (RR) of tumour risk between donors and nonblood donors among different age groups. A total of 1,625,599 donors were recruited (including 968,823 males) and compared with the matched nonblood donor group. Significantly lower risk of malignancy in males was found among donors (adjusted RR: 0.82, 95% CI: 0.75–0.92). Lower risks for specific types of tumours among donors were observed, including liver (0.42, [0.28–0.67]), lung (0.74, [0.59–0.87]), lymphoma (0.75, [0.62–0.85]), and oesophagus (0.55, [0.41–0.72]). However, the risk of brain cancer was higher among male donors (RR 1.19 [1.06–1.29]). Among female donors, lower risk of liver (0.57, [0.42–0.79]) and oesophagus malignancy (0.73, [0.62–0.88]) was observed. For benign tumours, male donors have a lower risk of benign skin tumour (0.79, [0.62–0.94]) and hemangioma and lymphangioma (0.75, [0.51–0.89]), while female donors have a lower risk in hemangioma and lymphangioma (0.65, [0.44–0.83]). We also found that the risk decreased with age among donors in the prevalence of tumours compared to that in nonblood donors (
). Blood donation appears to be significantly associated with various tumour risks among both males and females. Overall, the risk of tumours decreased more substantially with age in blood donors compared with nonblood donors. Further research is warranted to investigate the impact of ‘health donor effects’ on these findings.

Abstract
The prevalence of anaemia and its continuous growth, especially among women, is a global health concern. The present study aims to examine the prevalence of anaemia and its determinants in the North Eastern region of India. The study used secondary data from the National Family Health Survey 2015-2016 on women of reproductive age group in India. The data were adjusted for sampling weight, stratification and cluster sampling design for analysis. Binary logistic regression and multivariable regression analysis were performed to determine factors associated with anaemia. Of the 65941 participants, 25993 (40%) had anaemia. High prevalence of mild or moderate anaemia was found among women with following socio-demographic characteristics: residing in the rural area (41.20%), having no education (43.07%), belonging to the low-income family (43.39%), having a well as source of drinking water (46.29%), using the traditional method of contraception (44.55%), underweight (42.18%) and those who had first delivery before 20 years of age (40.66%). Logistic regression (adjusted odds ratio) showed that women in the following categories were more likely to develop anaemia: in the age-group of 35-49 years, with no education, with poor wealth, having low nutrition levels; using traditional contraception and women who ate pulses or fish once a week. Alarming rates of anaemia (two in every five), found in the study, need effective strategies for fortification of iron supplement among women. Generation of mass awareness in this regard by utilizing the ongoing adolescent, maternal, child health and nutrition programmes will help in reducing the incidence of anaemia among women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS There is clear evidence that lifestyle factors affect iron bioavailability. However, information regarding the effect of alcohol and caffeine consumption on iron metabolism is limited. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the effect of caffeine and alcohol consumption on iron metabolism in healthy men, regarding their everyday physical activity level. METHODS The study enrolled 83 men (59 physically active and 24 sedentary men) aged 18-32 years. Fasting blood samples were collected. ELISA kits were used to determine levels of ferritin, soluble transferrin receptor, hepcidin, hemojuvelin, and C-reactive protein (hsCRP). Level of physical activity was assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Caffeine and alcohol intake was assessed using a food frequency questionnaire. A general linear model was performed to evaluate the relationship between caffeine intake and levels of serum ferritin, ferritin, soluble transferrin receptor, hepcidin, hemojuvelin, and hsCRP. RESULTS Physically active men (but not sedentary men) who consumed alcohol in excess presented higher ferritin levels when compared to moderate drinkers and abstainers (R2 = 0.35, p = 0.0001). Heavy drinkers presented the highest hepcidin levels when compared to both abstainers and moderate drinkers (p < 0.0001 for physically active, and p = 0.0267 for sedentary men). However, moderate drinkers showed significantly lower hsCRP levels when compared to heavy drinkers and abstainers drinkers (p < 0.0001 for physically active, and p = 0.0116 for sedentary men). Greater caffeine intake was generally associated with greater serum hepcidin levels, with the strongest effect on moderate drinkers. A significant influence of caffeine intake on hsCRP was shown for physically active men but not for sedentary men - greater caffeine intake was connected with higher hsCRP levels for participants who drank alcohol. CONCLUSION Based on the presented results it can be assumed that high caffeine consumption may lead to suppression of iron bioavailability through increased inflammation. Furthermore, physical activity and moderate alcohol consumption seemed to benefit reduction of inflammatory response, at least as represented by hsCRP levels.

Abstract
Iron is required for energy production, DNA synthesis, and cell proliferation, mainly as a component of the prosthetic group in hemoproteins and as part of iron-sulfur clusters. Iron is also a critical component of hemoglobin and plays an important role in oxygen delivery. Imbalances in iron metabolism negatively affect these vital functions. As the crucial barrier between the fetus and the mother, the placenta plays a pivotal role in iron metabolism during pregnancy. Iron deficiency affects 1.2 billion individuals worldwide. Pregnant women are at high risk of developing or worsening iron deficiency. On the contrary, in frequent hemoglobin diseases, such as sickle-cell disease and thalassemia, iron overload is observed. Both iron deficiency and iron overload can affect neonatal development. This review aims to provide an update on our current knowledge on iron and heme metabolism in normal and pathological pregnancies. The main molecular actors in human placental iron metabolism are described, focusing on the impact of iron deficiency and hemoglobin diseases on the placenta, together with normal metabolism. Then, we discuss data concerning iron metabolism in frequent pathological pregnancies to complete the picture, focusing on the most frequent diseases.

Abstract
Anaemia among non-pregnant females of reproductive age remains a common public health problem globally, as well as in Sri Lanka. The objective of the study was to determine the prevalence of anaemia, asses the knowledge and the associated factors of anaemia among non-pregnant females of reproductive age in a tea estate community in Hantana, Kandy district, Sri Lanka. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 236 randomly selected non-pregnant females of reproductive age within the tea estate community belonging to two MOH (Medical Officers of Health) areas. The proportion of anaemia was determined by measuring haemoglobin (Hb) concentration using Mindray five-part automated blood analyser. The cut-off value to determine anaemia was set at 12.0 g/dL and respondents were categorized into three anaemia categories based on their Hb value. The common risk factors and knowledge regarding anaemia were assessed using a pre-tested interviewer administered questionnaire. Data was analysed with SPSS version 25. Chi-square test was used to conduct a bi-variate analysis. Prevalence of anaemia was 33.1%, among whom 53.8% had mild anaemia, 39.7% had moderate anaemia and 6.4% had severe anaemia. Anaemia was significantly associated with being employed, delivery of a baby within the past 4 years, advancing age, low income (less than 20,000 LKR) and prolonged menstrual bleeding for more than 3 days. Majority (58.5%) had poor knowledge regarding anaemia with a mean score of 5.69 (SD ± 2.42) out of 12. Since anaemia is a multifactorial condition it requires a combination of interventions such as health education and promotion activities. This study aids in assessing the prevalence of anaemia among estate workers identify the significant factors contributing to anaemia.

Abstract
Background: Micronutrient malnutrition is a form of undernutrition that causes diseases, and this is mainly due to insufficient intake of nutrients in daily foods. The status of micronutrients for people in Sudan remains scarce, and information is limited. The aim of this study is to highlight the status of micronutrients among women of reproductive age (15–49 years of age) and their children in Sudan. Methods: This manuscript is a quantitative descriptive study, based on the data from Sudan Micronutrient Survey (SMS); it is part of the second round of the Simple Spatial Survey Method (S3M II) in Sudan (a total of 93,882 households). Results: The level of consumption of vitamin A-rich foods was found to be moderate at 67.36% for reproductive-age women and low at 23.44% for under-five children. Similarly, consumption rate of vitamin B-rich foods among reproductive-age women was 62.13%, and low for children at 11.02%. The consumption of iron-, calcium-, and zinc-rich foods was moderate among women (66.75%, 47.69%, 69.72%, respectively) and very low in children (12.28%, 17.62%, 14.99%, respectively). The iron deficiency prevalence was 47% in non-pregnant women, 58% in pregnant women, and 54% in children. The prevalence of anemia was 30% in non-pregnant women, 37% in pregnant women, and 48% in children. Generally, urinary iodine concentration was inadequate in lactating and non-pregnant women as well as in pregnant women. Most indicators of micronutrients in Sudan for children and women of reproductive age were highly significant. Sudan needs more efforts to create an enabling environment through legislation, policies, and strategies to strengthen the nutrition-sensitive and specific interventions and improving status of micronutrients among women and children, focusing on food fortification, food supplements, and counseling on micronutrients intake for mothers during antenatal and postnatal services as well as raising community awareness.

Prevalence and Molecular Characterization of Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD) Deficiency in Females from Previously Malaria Endemic Regions in Northeastern Thailand and Identification of a Novel G6PD Variant. Abstract
Introduction Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is the most common X-linked enzymopathy, highly prevalent in the areas where malaria is or has been endemic. Prevalence of G6PD deficiency and characterization of G6PD variants in females from previously malaria-endemic areas of northeastern Thailand remain unstudied. Methods Prevalence of G6PD deficiency was determined by a fluorescent spot test (FST), quantitative G6PD activity assay, and multiplex allele-specific (AS)- and restriction fragment length polymorphic (RFLP)-PCR developed for detection of common G6PD variants in the Thai population. Results Prevalence of G6PD deficiency in female samples (n = 355) was 18% by FST, 29.6% by quantitation of G6PD activity, and 28.1% by PCR-based genotyping. The most common variant was G6PD Viangchan (54%), followed by G6PD Canton (11%) and G6PD Union (11%); in addition, a novel heterozygous variant, G6PD Khon Kaen (c.305T>C, p.F102S), was identified. The majority of heterozygotes expressed G6PD activity within the intermediate deficiency range (30–70% median of normal enzyme activity). Conclusion High prevalence of G6PD deficiency was present in females from northeastern Thailand, the majority being due to heterozygosity of G6PD variants. The findings will have a bearing on the inclusion of primaquine in antimalarial-based policies for malaria elimination in populations with a high prevalence of G6PD deficiency.

Abstract
Background Anemia in women of reproductive age is a major public health challenge for low- and middle-income countries with a long-term negative impact on the health of women, their children, and the economic growth of the society. Even though the world health organization targeted a 50% global reduction of anemia among women of reproductive age by 2025, with the current trend it is unlikely to achieve this goal. Objective This study aimed to assess the prevalence and associated factors of anemia among women of reproductive age in eastern Africa. Methods A secondary data analysis, using demographic and health survey (DHS) data of 10 eastern African countries, was conducted. For our study, a total weighted sample of 101524 women of reproductive age was used. We employed a multilevel mixed-effects generalized linear model (using Poisson regression with robust error variance). Both unadjusted and adjusted prevalence ratios with their 95% confidence interval were reported. Results The prevalence of anemia in eastern Africa was 34.85 (95%CI: 34.56–35.14) ranging from 19.23% in Rwanda to 53.98% in Mozambique. In the multivariable multilevel analysis, being older age, having primary and above education, being from households with second to highest wealth quantiles, being currently working, not perceiving distance as a big problem, use of modern contraceptive methods, and rural residence was associated with a lower prevalence of anemia. While, being married and divorced/separated/widowed, women from female-headed households, women from households with unimproved toilet facility and unimproved water source, ever had of a terminated pregnancy, having high parity, and being from large household size was associated with a higher prevalence of anemia. Conclusion The prevalence of anemia in eastern Africa was relatively high. Both individual level and community level factors were associated with the prevalence of anemia in women of reproductive age. Therefore, giving special attention to those women who are at a higher prevalence of anemia such as younger women, those who are from households with low socioeconomic status, unimproved toilet facility, and source of drinking water, as well as pregnant women could decrease anemia in women of reproductive age.
