Abstract
BACKGROUND Children hospitalized for bronchiolitis have increased risk of asthma and low lung function persisting into adulthood, but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Body mass index (BMI) and adipokines are associated with respiratory morbidity. We aimed to investigate if associations between BMI and adipokines and the outcomes asthma, atopy, and lung function differed between young adults previously hospitalized for bronchiolitis and control subjects. METHODS This sub study of a historical cohort enrolled 185 young adults previously hospitalized for bronchiolitis and 146 matched control subjects. Exposures (BMI and the adipokines: adiponectin, leptin, resistin, and ghrelin) and outcomes (asthma, atopy, and lung function) were measured cross-sectionally at 17-20 years of age. Associations were tested in regression models, and differences between the post-bronchiolitis- and control group were tested by including interaction terms. RESULTS BMI was associated with asthma and lung function, but we did not find that the associations differed between the post-bronchiolitis- and control group. We also found some associations between adipokines and outcomes, but only associations between adiponectin and forced vital capacity (FVC) and between resistin and current asthma differed between the groups (p-value interaction term 0.027 and 0.040 respectively). Adiponectin tended to be positively associated with FVC in the post-bronchiolitis group, with an opposite tendency in the control group. Resistin was positively associated with current asthma only in the control group. CONCLUSION The increased prevalence of asthma and impaired lung function observed in young adults previously hospitalized for bronchiolitis do not seem to be related to growth and fat metabolism.

Abstract
The proportion of obese or overweight patients in COPD patients is increasing. Although BMI, WC and other easy to measure indicators have been proven to be related to the risk of COPD, they cannot accurately reflect the distribution and changes of body composition, ignoring the body composition (such as fat distribution, muscle content, water content, etc.), the relationship between it and disease risk may be missed. By analyzing the correlation between different body composition indexes and COPD patients, we can provide new research ideas for the prognosis judgment or intervention of COPD disease.

Abstract
Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) has been related to pulmonary diseases but its relationship with lung age has not been sufficiently studied. In addition, anthropometric variables have been associated with pulmonary dysfunction, highlighting the waist-to-height ratio (WHtR). The aim was to evaluate the relationship between MetS and: lung age, anthropometric variables and the alteration of lung function. A cross-sectional study was carried out in 1901 workers, evaluating lung function through lung age (Morris & Temple equation) and spirometric values. The diagnosis of MetS was based on the harmonized criteria. We measured anthropometric variables (WHtR, waist circumference, body mass index, waist to hip ratio), blood pressure and biochemical variables (glucose, cholesterol total, HDL, triglycerides). Workers suffering from MetS showed an accelerated lung aging (59.4 ± 18.7 years vs 49 ± 18.4 years). The WHtR ≥ 0.55 was significantly related to an increase in lung age (β = 6.393, p < 0.001). In addition, a significant linear trend was found between clinical categories of WHtR and lung dysfunction, restrictive and mixed pattern. MetS caused an accelerated lung aging and favored the presence of restrictive lung impairment. In addition, WHtR ≥ 0.55 has been shown as the best predictor for pulmonary health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Increased leptin and decreased adiponectin levels are reported in coronary artery disease (CAD) as well as in obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). Less is known regarding the impact of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) on these biomarkers. We aimed to determine variables associated with leptin and adiponectin in adults with CAD and nonsleepy OSA, and evaluate the effect of CPAP adjusted for confounding factors. METHODS This was one of the secondary outcomes of the RICCADSA trial, conducted in Sweden between 2005 and 2013. From 244 revascularized CAD and OSA patients (apnoea-hypopnoea index >15/h) without excessive daytime sleepiness (Epworth Sleepiness Scale score <10), 196 with blood samples at baseline, after 3, and 12 months were included in the randomized controlled trial arm; of those, 98 were allocated to auto-titrating CPAP, and 98 to no-CPAP. RESULTS No significant changes in leptin and adiponectin levels were observed during follow-up, whereas Body-Mass-Index and waist circumference increased in both CPAP and no-CPAP groups with no significant between-group differences. Alterations in plasma leptin were determined by changes in waist circumference (beta coefficient 2.47; 95% confidence interval 0.77-4.40), whereas none of the analyzed parameters was predictive for changes in adiponectin levels. No association was found with CPAP adherence. CONCLUSIONS CPAP had no significant effect on leptin and adiponectin in this cohort of nonsleepy OSA patients. An increase in waist circumference predicted an increase in plasma levels of leptin after 12 months, suggesting that lifestyle modifications should be given priority in adults with CAD and OSA regardless of CPAP treatment.
