Women's knowledge and attitudes to the menopause: a comparison of women over 40 who were in the perimenopause, post menopause and those not in the peri or post menopause

Menopausal knowledge and attitudes of women during the perimenopausal period

OBJECTIVE

This study aims to determine the relationship between knowledge and attitudes about menopause among women in the perimenopausal period.

METHODS

A descriptive and relationship-seeking cross-sectional study was conducted in family health centers in a district of Istanbul between January and March 2023. The study included 300 women in the perimenopausal period. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using a descriptive information form, a menopause knowledge test, and the Menopause Attitude Scale.

RESULTS

The average age of participants was 45.07 ± 3.50, with 85.3% married, 37.0% having completed primary school, and 55.0% being housewives. The average menopause knowledge score was 12.29 ± 3.75 (out of 20), and the average menopause attitude score was 25.23 ± 6.99 (out of 52). No significant relationship was found between menopause knowledge and attitude scores ( r = 0.06, P > 0.05). Women with an income exceeding their expenses had higher menopause knowledge scores ( P < 0.05). Unmarried women, those with lower education levels, those with higher incomes, and those living alone had higher menopause attitude scores compared with their counterparts ( P < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

Women's knowledge and attitudes toward menopause are moderate in the perimenopausal period. There is no significant relationship between menopausal knowledge and attitude of women during the perimenopausal period. It was determined that menopause knowledge level differed according to women's income status, and menopause attitude differed according to marital status, educational status, and cohabitation status in this study.

Self-management eHealth solutions for menopause - a systematic scoping review

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this scoping review was to highlight the current scientific evidence on eHealth-based information tools for menopause in terms of quality, requirements and previous intervention outcomes.

METHODS

We systematically searched electronic databases (Embase, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Global Health Database [Ovid], Web of Science, ClinicalTrials.gov [NLM], LIVIVO Search Portal [ZB MED] and Google Scholar) from 1974 to March 2022 for relevant records.

RESULTS

Our search yielded 1773 records, of which 28 met our inclusion criteria. Thirteen of 28 selected studies were cross-sectional with qualitative content analysis of websites about menopause; 9 studies were cohort studies examining the impact of an eHealth intervention; two studies were randomized controlled trials comparing eHealth tools with conventional ones; and four studies were non-systematic literature reviews.

CONCLUSION

This scoping review highlights the potential of eHealth-based information tools for the management of menopause and shows that most eHealth-based information tools are inadequate in terms of readability and the balanced view on information. Providers of eHealth-based information tools should pay attention to a participatory design, readability, balance of content and the use of multimedia tools for information delivery to improve understanding.

A rapid review of menopausal education programmes

INTRODUCTION

Menopause is a significant life event that can impact a woman's quality of life and mental health due to hormonal changes. Menopause education programmes play a crucial role in increasing awareness and knowledge about menopause in women. This rapid review aimed to identify the structure and components of menopause education programmes and summarise the evidence of their effectiveness in improving menopausal knowledge, symptoms, and quality of life.

METHODS

The Cochrane rapid review methodology was employed, involving systematic searches in four databases. The eligibility criteria included primary research on menopause education programmes for adults, and studies reporting menopause-related outcomes.

RESULTS

A total of 39 studies were included in the review, with most (n = 26/39, 66.7%) published in the last decade. The majority of interventions were delivered in group settings, providing advantages such as a supportive environment and shared experiences among participants. The most frequently covered topics included signs and symptoms of menopause, treatment/management, and lifestyle factors. The review identified evidence of effectiveness in supporting menopause education programmes for improving women's knowledge, symptoms, and quality of life. However, inconsistent reporting of intervention components hindered replication and implementation.

CONCLUSION

The review suggests the need for comprehensive reporting of interventions, and inclusion of premenopausal women, and recommends that future menopause education interventions are inclusive for all ages and abilities. Overall, studies included in this review support the use of menopause education programmes for improving women's understanding and management of menopause.

How do women feel cold water swimming affects their menstrual and perimenopausal symptoms?

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to determine how women felt cold water swimming affected their menstrual and perimenopausal symptoms.

STUDY DESIGN

An online survey that asked women who regularly swim in cold water about their experiences. The survey was advertised for 2 months on social media. Questions related to cold water swimming habits and menstrual and perimenopausal symptoms were analysed.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

Quantitative and qualitative data including; frequency of menstrual and menopause symptoms, the effect of cold water swimming on these symptoms.

RESULTS

1114 women completed the survey. Women reported that cold water swimming reduced their menstrual symptoms, notably psychological symptoms such as anxiety (46.7%), mood swings (37.7%) and irritability (37.6%). Perimenopausal women reported a significant improvement in anxiety (46.9%), mood swings (34.5%), low mood (31.1%) and hot flushes (30.3%). The majority of women with symptoms swam specifically to reduce these symptoms (56.4% for period and 63.3% for perimenopause symptoms). Women said they felt it was the physical and mental effects of the cold water that helped their symptoms. For the free text question, five themes were identified: the calming and mood-boosting effect of the water, companionship and community, period improvements, an improvement in hot flushes and an overall health improvement.

CONCLUSION

Women felt that cold water swimming had a positive overall effect on menstrual and perimenopause symptoms. Studies on other forms of exercise to relieve menstrual and perimenopause symptoms may show similar findings.
