Abstract
Angina pectoris (AP), a clinical syndrome characterized by paroxysmal chest pain, is caused by insufficient blood supply to the coronary arteries and sudden temporary myocardial ischemia and hypoxia. Long-term AP typically induces other cardiovascular events, including myocardial infarction and heart failure, posing a serious threat to patient safety. However, AP's complex pathological mechanisms and developmental processes introduce significant challenges in the rapid diagnosis and accurate treatment of its different subtypes, including stable angina pectoris (SAP), unstable angina pectoris (UAP), and variant angina pectoris (VAP). Omics research has contributed significantly to revealing the pathological mechanisms of various diseases with the rapid development of high-throughput sequencing approaches. The application of multi-omics approaches effectively interprets systematic information on diseases from the perspective of genes, RNAs, proteins, and metabolites. Integrating multi-omics research introduces novel avenues for identifying biomarkers to distinguish different AP subtypes. This study reviewed articles related to multi-omics and AP to elaborate on the research progress in multi-omics approaches (including genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics), summarized their applications in screening biomarkers employed to discriminate multiple AP subtypes, and delineated integration methods for multi-omics approaches. Finally, we discussed the advantages and disadvantages of applying a single-omics approach in distinguishing diverse AP subtypes. Our review demonstrated that the integration of multi-omics technologies is preferable for quick and precise diagnosis of the three AP types, namely SAP, UAP, and VAP.

Abstract
Recent research has extensively explored the intricate mechanisms that underlie the effectiveness of acupuncture, highlighting the importance of stimulating acupoints, the role of acupuncture techniques in managing diseases, and the interaction between meridian pathways and molecular processes. Studies have underscored the crucial role of acupuncture in activating neurons, modulating the immune system, and influencing vascular activity, all of which contribute significantly to its therapeutic benefits across a wide range of symptoms and conditions. Utilization of imaging modalities enables the identification of changes in cerebral blood flow, brain function, and regional glucose metabolism following acupuncture sessions. The interstitial fluid circulation network within meridians adheres to specific laws that facilitate the transportation of materials. Acupuncture initiates the release of neurotransmitters, neuropeptides, and immune factors, impacting pain perception, inflammation, and physiological functions. It influences the complex neuro-endocrine-immune network by activating pathways involving the nervous system, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, and immune responses. Moreover, acupuncture induces molecular modifications such as phosphorylation, methylation, and histone modification, leading to key molecular changes that ultimately result in anti-inflammatory effects and the regulation of immune responses.

Abstract
Electroacupuncture (EA) at the Neiguan acupoint (PC6) has shown significant cardioprotective effects. Sympathetic nerves play an important role in maintaining cardiac function after myocardial infarction (MI). Previous studies have found that EA treatment may improve cardiac function by modulating sympathetic remodeling after MI. However, the mechanism in how EA affects sympathetic remodeling and improves cardiac function remains unclear. The aim of this study is to investigate the cardioprotective mechanism of EA after myocardial ischemic injury by improving sympathetic remodeling and promoting macrophage M2 polarization. We established a mouse model of MI by occluding coronary arteries in male C57/BL6 mice. EA treatment was performed at the PC6 with current intensity (1 mA) and frequency (2/15 Hz). Cardiac function was evaluated using echocardiography. Heart rate variability in mice was assessed via standard electrocardiography. Myocardial fibrosis was evaluated by Sirius red staining. Levels of inflammatory factors were assessed using RT-qPCR. Sympathetic nerve remodeling was assessed through ELISA, western blotting, immunohistochemistry, and immunofluorescence staining. Macrophage polarization was evaluated using flow cytometry. Our results indicated that cardiac systolic function improved significantly after EA treatment, with an increase in fractional shortening and ejection fraction. Myocardial fibrosis was significantly mitigated in the EA group. The sympathetic nerve marker tyrosine hydroxylase and the nerve sprouting marker growth-associated Protein 43 were significantly reduced in the EA group, indicating that sympathetic remodeling was significantly reduced. EA treatment also promoted macrophage M2 polarization, reduced levels of inflammatory factors TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6, and decreased macrophage-associated nerve growth factor in myocardial tissue. To sum up, our results suggest that EA at PC6 attenuates sympathetic remodeling after MI to promote macrophage M2 polarization and improve cardiac function.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To verify the hypothesis that electroacupuncture inhibits the hyperactivity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis regulating the expression of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) in the hippocampus of acute myocardial ischemia (AMI) rats. METHODS Sixty-six healthy male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into five groups: Sham, AMI (Model), electroacupuncture at Shenmen (HT7)-Tongli (HT5) segment (EA), non-acupoint electroacupuncture (Control), and Model + corticosterone (Model + CORT). AMI was induced occlusion of the left anterior descending coronary artery, followed by 3 d of electroacupuncture at Shenmen (HT7)-Tongli (HT5) segment. In the Control group, electroacupuncture was applied at points lying 5 and 10 mm from the base of the tail. The AMI + CORT group was injected with CORT (20 mg/kg) in saline. Hemorheology, electrocardiography (ECG), hematoxylin and eosin staining, and expression of glycogen phosphorylase BB (GPBB) and heart-type fatty acid-binding protein (H-FABP) were used to assess cardiac function. The effects of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and CORT were evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Protein expression in the Sham and Model groups were screened by tandem mass tag-based quantitative proteomics analysis. Protein expression was evaluated by Western blotting (vimentin and GFAP) and immunofluorescence staining (GFAP). RESULTS Compared with the Sham group, the hemorheology indicators, heart rate, ECG-ST segment elevation, and GPBB and H-FABP levels were higher in Model rats. The EA group showed reductions in these indicators compared with the Model group. Similarly, in Model rats, the expression of ACTH and CORT were significantly increased compared with the Sham group. The EA group also showed reduced expression of ACTH and CORT. Importantly, proteomics analysis showed that vimentin was differentially expressed in Model rats. Compared with the Sham group, vimentin and GFAP expression in the hippocampus was increased in the Model group but decreased in the AMI + EA group. Additionally, intraperitoneal injection of CORT aggravated the expression of GPBB, H-FABP and GFAP. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggested that electroacupuncture may protect against cardiac injury induced by AMI through regulation of HPA axis hyperactivity, and that hippocampal GFAP may play an important role in the regulation.

Abstract
PURPOSE Previous studies proved the benefits of electroacupuncture (EA) on heart in ischemia reperfusion injury and chronic heart failure. However, the role of EA on sepsis-induced cardiac dysfunction has rarely been elucidated before. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of EA on cardiac dysfunction in a rat model of sepsis and to speculate the underlying mechanisms. METHODS Sepsis was induced by cecum ligation and puncture in anesthetized rats. EA at the acupoint "Neiguan (PC6)" was applied 0.5 h after the induction of sepsis for 20 min. Heart rate variability was obtained immediately after EA to evaluate autonomic balance. Echocardiography was performed at 6 h and 24 h after sepsis induction in vivo. Measurements of hemodynamics, blood gases, cytokines and biochemistry were collected at 24 h. Cardiac tissue underwent immunofluorescence staining to determine the expression of α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α7nAChR) on macrophages. RESULTS EA increased vagus nerve activity, prevented the development of hyperlactatemia, attenuated the decline of left ventricle ejection fraction, suppressed systemic and cardiac inflammation and alleviated the histopathological manifestations of heart in sepsis rats. Furthermore, the cardiac tissue from EA treated rats showed increased expressions of α7nAChR on macrophages. The cardio-protective and anti-inflammatory effects of EA were partly or completely prevented in rats with vagotomy. CONCLUSION EA at PC6 attenuates left ventricle dysfunction and decreases inflammation in sepsis-induced cardiac dysfunction. The cardio-protective effects of EA are mediated through vagus nerve mediated cholinergic pathway.

Abstract
Background. Stable angina pectoris with moderate coronary artery lesions is a syndrome caused by coronary artery stenosis, which endangers the quality of life. Previous acupuncture studies have shown effectiveness as a complementary therapy for ischaemic heart disease. However, more clinical evidence is needed for verification, and the mechanism should be investigated, especially involving the functional interactions between the heart and brain. Therefore, we designed a clinical trial to provide more evidence for acupuncture efficacy and its mechanism in ischaemic heart disease. Methods/Design. A total of 80 participants will be randomized to the electroacupuncture group and sham-electroacupuncture group at a ratio of 1 : 1. This trial will be conducted over 8 weeks, including a 2-week screening, 2-week treatment, and 4-week follow-up. All participants will continue to receive similar basic disease treatment procedures before the trial (including lifestyle changes and treatment for standard supportive medications, hypertension, and hyperlipidaemia, such as aspirin, metoprolol succinate, atorvastatin, and sodium fosinopril). Additionally, 12 sessions of acupuncture will be administered during the treatment period. The main outcome is Seattle Angina Questionnaire scores. The other observation indices are the heart rate variability and self-rating anxiety scale and self-rating depression scale scores. To explore mechanisms based on the hypothesis of a correlation between heart and brain function, fMRI scans will be used to detect functional brain changes in 15 patients from each group at baseline and at the end of treatment. Finally, the efficacy of acupuncture will be evaluated, and the HRV and imaging data will be correlated with clinical data to investigate the possible relationships between the brain and heart activity. Discussion. This trial will provide evidence for acupuncture as adjuvant therapy for the treatment of stable angina pectoris with moderate coronary artery lesions. The results will shed light on potential mechanisms of heart-brain interactions underlying acupuncture as an adjuvant therapy for treating ischaemic heart disease. Abstract
Objective: Epigenetics, including DNA methylation, histone modification, and posttranscriptional regulation of microRNAs, is the study of heritable changes in gene expression that do not include DNA-sequence alterations. Epigenetics has become a new strategy for basic and clinical research on acupuncture in the last decade. The aim of this research update was to summarize the epigenetic mechanisms of angiogenesis induced by acupuncture treatment in ischemic heart diseases. Materials and Methods: The current authors' group has been working to illustrate the mechanism of acupuncture from an epigenetics perspective, which has shed new lights on the mechanisms and applications of acupuncture in cardiovascular diseases. This article summarizes the group's new findings in animal models as well as in patients with chronic stable angina. Progress since 2011 in other teams' research in this field is also discussed in this article. Conclusions: Acupuncture could regulate histone modifications and could rescue patients who sustain ischemic injuries. This treatment could possibly work through promoting angiogenesis.

Abstract
Acupuncture is a key component of Chinese medicine. It describes a series of procedures involving the stimulation of skin through penetration of fine, single-use, sterile needles that result in the release of neurotransmitters. Although its use is on the growing trend, considerable controversy surrounds its value as a therapy. Standard randomized controlled trials that adhere to the accepted criteria should be conducted in the future to ensure the effectiveness of acupuncture. This article summarizes the current evidence regarding the use of acupuncture. It includes a description of the history, mode of operation, treatment of a variety of chronic disorders related to inflammation, and future directions for acupuncture use. Published clinical trials support the view that acupuncture is a possible candidate for the treatment of several chronic inflammation-related disorders.

BACKGROUND Coronary heart disease angina pectoris is a common clinical symptom in patients with coronary heart disease, due to coronary atherosclerotic stenosis or sputum leading to coronary insufficiency, myocardial transient ischemia, hypoxia caused by precordial pain as the main clinical manifestations Group syndrome. Coronary heart disease angina causes coronary blood flow insufficiency, cannot meet the normal activities of myocardial cells, leading to myocardial ischemia or necrosis. When the disease occurs, there is paroxysmal and crushing pain in the precordial area of the patient. Therefore, we recognize the importance of the disease and have paid enough attention. Clinical studies in recent years have found that the use of acupuncture in the treatment of angina pectoris has a good clinical application prospect. This study was conducted to study the effect of using acupuncture to treat angina pectoris. METHODS AND ANALYSIS We will search for PubMed, Cochrane Library, AMED, EMbase, WorldSciNet, Nature, Science online and China Journal Full-text Database, China Biomedical Literature CD-ROM Database (CBM), and related randomized controlled trials included in the China Resources Database. The time is limited from the construction of the library to November 2019. We will use the criteria provided by Cochrane 5.1.0 for quality assessment and risk assessment of the included studies, and use the Revman 5.3 and Stata13.0 software for meta-analysis of the effectiveness, recurrence rate, and symptom scores of angina pectoris. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION This systematic review will evaluate the efficacy and safety of acupuncture for angina pectoris. Because all of the data used in this systematic review and meta-analysis have been published, this review does not require ethical approval. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Previous reviews indicate that the effect of acupuncture on stable angina pectoris (SAP) remains controversial. The results of trials published in the past 5 years may possibly change this situation, but an updated systematic review is not available. We therefore designed this study to systematically assess the efficacy and safety of acupuncture for treating SAP. METHODS AND ANALYSIS Nine online databases will be searched without language or publication status restrictions from their inception to September 2017. Randomised controlled trials that include patients with stable angina receiving acupuncture therapy versus a control group will be deemed eligible. The selection of studies, data extraction and risk of bias assessment will be carried out by two independent reviewers. Data synthesis will be performed using RevMan V.5.3 software with either a fixed effects model or random effects model, depending on the heterogeneity test. Evidence quality will be evaluated using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation system. The efficacy-effectiveness spectrum for each included trial will be rated using the Rating of Included Trials on the Efficacy-effectiveness Spectrum tool. Outcomes of interest include the improvement of weekly angina attacks and reduction of nitroglycerin medication use after receiving acupuncture treatment, the incidence of cardiovascular events, heart rate variability, pain intensity measured on a visual analogue scale, total workload and exercise duration at peak exercise, safety and adverse events. A meta-analysis will be conducted if no considerable heterogeneity is detected. The results will be presented as risk ratios with 95% CIs for dichotomous data and weighted mean differences or standardised mean differences with 95% CIs for continuous data. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION This systematic review will not involve private information from individuals or endanger their rights, and therefore does not necessarily require ethical approval. The results may be published in a peer-reviewed journal or disseminated in relevant conferences. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER CRD42015016201.

Abstract
Since time immemorial humans have utilized natural products and therapies for their healing properties. Even now, in the age of genomics and on the cusp of regenerative medicine, the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) approaches represents a popular branch of health care. Furthermore, there is a trend towards a unified medical philosophy referred to as Integrative Medicine (IM) that represents the convergence of CAM and conventional medicine. The IM model not only considers the holistic perspective of the physiological components of the individual, but also includes psychological and mind-body aspects. Justification for and validation of such a whole-systems approach is in part dependent upon identification of the functional pathways governing healing, and new data is revealing relationships between therapies and biochemical effects that have long defied explanation. We review this data and propose a unifying theme: IM's ability to affect healing is due at least in part to epigenetic mechanisms. This hypothesis is based on a mounting body of evidence that demonstrates a correlation between the physical and mental effects of IM and modulation of gene expression and epigenetic state. Emphasis on mapping, deciphering, and optimizing these effects will facilitate therapeutic delivery and create further benefits.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hyperuricemia (HUA) is the most common disease associated with cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, hypertension, and kidney disease. The objective of the current study was to evaluate the preliminary efficacy, mechanism, and safety of acupuncture on serum uric acid in patients with asymptomatic HUA. METHODS A randomized, placebo-controlled trial among 123 patients with asymptomatic HUA was conducted. The acupoints used in the acupuncture group were bilateral Five Shu in Spleen Meridian. Each participant received the intervention once daily for 10 consecutive days. The sham group received the same treatment duration on the same acupoints by the Park Sham Device. All patients underwent measurements of serum or urine creatinine, uric acid, serum lipid profiles, fasting plasma glucose, HbA1c, xanthine oxidase (XOD) and urate-anion exchanger (URAT-1). RESULTS At the end of the intervention, the individuals in the acupuncture group were found to have significantly less levels of serum uric acid than those in the sham group [(453±65 vs. 528±81) μmol/L, p<0.01]. Acupuncture was effective on increasing the urine uric acid level, urine pH value and 24-hour urine volume than the sham treatment (p<0.05 for all). Interestingly, acupuncture significantly decreased the level of URAT-1 (p<0.01) but not XOD than that of the sham intervention. The adverse events were that 3 patients experienced severe pain. CONCLUSIONS Acupuncture on Five Shu in Spleen Meridian appeared to be safe and efficacious for decreasing serum uric acid in a Chinese HUA patient population. The mechanism might be associated with the decrease level of enzyme URAT-1. CHINESE CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION ChiCTR-TRC-13004122.

Abstract
The systemic effects of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) seem to be a Gordian knot, impossible to untie for decades. With the advent of transcriptomics, a useful sword is provided to cut the knot and shed some light on complex bioprocesses and intrinsic connections among them. Here, we revisit studies on TCM ZHENGs using this approach, highlight its applications on elucidating the potential scientific basis of ZHENG and investigating mechanisms of action for the TCM formula, and demonstrating its unique role in novel TCM drug design and discovery through active ingredient detection from TCM and compatibility theory study of TCM. The limitations and future perspectives of transcriptomics approaches to TCM study are also discussed.
