Abstract
Lung cancer (LC) causes few symptoms in the earliest stages, leading to one of the highest mortality rates among cancers. Low-dose computerised tomography (LDCT) is used to screen high-risk individuals, reducing the mortality rate by 20%. However, LDCT results in a high number of false positives and is associated with unnecessary follow-up and cost. Biomarkers with high sensitivities and specificities could assist in the early detection of LC, especially in patients with high-risk features. Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), cytokeratin 19 fragments and cancer antigen 125 have been found to be highly expressed during the later stages of LC but have low sensitivity in the earliest stages. We determined the best biomarkers for the early diagnosis of LC, using a systematic review of eight databases. We identified 98 articles that focussed on the identification and assessment of diagnostic biomarkers and achieved a pooled area under curve of 0.85 (95% CI 0.82-0.088), indicating that the diagnostic performance of these biomarkers when combined was excellent. Of the studies, 30 focussed on single/antigen panels, 22 on autoantibodies, 31 on miRNA and RNA panels, and 15 suggested the use of circulating DNA combined with CEA or neuron-specific enolase (NSE) for early LC detection. Verification of blood biomarkers with high sensitivities (Ciz1, exoGCC2, ITGA2B), high specificities (CYFR21-1, antiHE4, OPNV) or both (HSP90α, CEA) along with miR-15b and miR-27b/miR-21 from sputum may improve early LC detection. Further assessment is needed using appropriate sample sizes, control groups that include patients with non-malignant conditions, and standardised cut-off levels for each biomarker.

Abstract
Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA), the second most common liver neoplasm, has a poor overall 5-year survival rate of less than 10%. A deeper understanding of the molecular pathogenesis contributing to CCA progression is essential for developing better therapeutic approaches to manage this disease. Ferroptosis, an oxidative iron-dependent form of regulated cell death, has been reported to be involved in tumorigenesis and progression. In particular, ferroptosis and inflammation, which are common issues in cholangiocarcinogenesis and CCA development, might be in concert with disease progression. Notably, the key feature of cancer cells is "iron addiction", which is crucial for the high metabolic demand in carcinogenesis and cancer progression. Additionally, iron metabolism is of great importance in ferroptosis. Moreover, that cancer cells are vulnerable to ferroptosis might be a possible mechanism of CCA development. Although the underlying mechanism of how ferroptosis is implicated in CCA development requires further investigation, developing a new strategy combined with a pro-ferroptotic treatment would be an exciting CCA treatment approach in the future.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Elevated serum ferritin is a common condition in critically ill patients. It is well known that hyperferritinemia constitutes a good biomarker for hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) in critically ill patients. However, further differential diagnoses of hyperferritinemia in adult critically ill patients remain poorly investigated. We sought to systematically investigate hyperferritinemia in adult critically ill patients without HLH. METHODS In this secondary analysis of a retrospective observational study, patients ≥18 years admitted to at least one adult intensive care unit at Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin between January 2006 and August 2018, and with hyperferritinemia of ≥500 μg/L were included. Patients with HLH were excluded. All patients were categorized into non-sepsis, sepsis, and septic shock. They were also classified into 17 disease groups, based on their ICD-10 codes, and pre-existing immunosuppression was determined. Uni- and multivariable linear regression analyses were performed in all patients. RESULTS A total of 2583 patients were analyzed. Multivariable linear regression analysis revealed positive associations of maximum SOFA score, sepsis or septic shock, liver disease (except hepatitis), and hematological malignancy with maximum ferritin. T/NK cell lymphoma, acute myeloblastic leukemia, Kaposi's sarcoma, acute or subacute liver failure, and hepatic veno-occlusive disease were positively associated with maximum ferritin in post-hoc multivariable linear regression analysis. CONCLUSIONS Sepsis or septic shock, liver disease (except hepatitis) and hematological malignancy are important differential diagnoses in hyperferritinemic adult critically ill patients without HLH. Together with HLH, they complete the quartet of important differential diagnoses of hyperferritinemia in adult critically ill patients. As these conditions are also related to HLH, it is important to apply HLH-2004 criteria for exclusion of HLH in hyperferritinemic patients. Hyperferritinemic critically ill patients without HLH require quick investigation of differential diagnoses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Several pro-inflammatory cytokines have been shown to regulate cancer cell growth and contribute to cancer promotion and progression. Interleukin 6 (IL-6) regulates almost all the hallmarks of cancer such as inhibition of apoptosis, proliferation, angiogenesis, and invasiveness and is also known to regulate cell metabolism. The associated increase in serum ferritin is most likely induced by the inflammatory state. In several studies, IL-6 and ferritin have a significant role in the development and clinical outcome in solid cancer and the Glasgow Prognostic Score (GPS) is widely used as a prognostic score in solid cancer. It is currently unclear whether levels of IL-6 and ferritin correlate with GPS in solid cancer patients.
AIM: The aim of this study is to determine the correlation between IL-6 and ferritin levels with the GPS in solid cancer patients.
METHODS: This study was an analytical observational study with a cross-sectional study approach to examine the relationship between IL-6 and ferritin levels with GPS in solid cancer patients. The sampling method was carried out by consecutive sampling. The total number of samples used in the study was 32 solid cancer subjects who had just been diagnosed. IL-6 was examined by kit enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and ferritin using immunochemiluminescent method at certified laboratory in Manado city, Indonesia. The GPS is based on the results of the patient’s C-reactive protein and albumin levels were also examined at certified laboratory in Manado city, Indonesia. Data analysis was done using SPSS version 22.
RESULTS: There were 32 patients with solid cancer who are newly diagnosed and have not undergone chemotherapy. Out of 32 patients, 17 are men (53.13%) and 15 are women (46.87%). The median age of the subject was 52.5 (33–69) years. There was a significant relationship between IL-6 levels and GPS (p = 0.011; OR 16.67 95% CI 1.617–171.783). There was no significant relationship between ferritin levels and GPS (p = 0.148; OR 5.429 95% CI 0.807–36.506). There was a statistically significant relationship between IL-6 levels and ferritin (r = 0.554; p = 0.001).
CONCLUSION: There was a significant correlation between IL-6 and GPS and there was a significant correlation between IL-6 and ferritin in solid cancer patients. IL-6 levels can be used to assess the risk of prognosis in solid cancer patients and help provide an idea of what kind of treatment will be given to patients, and can help to determine the plan treatment at the end of the life of cancer patients.

Abstract
High-dose vitamin C (VC) exhibits anti-tumor effects, and the cytotoxicity of VC is correlated with oxidative stress. However, iron, as a redox metal, plays an important effect in redox cycling and free radical formation in cells. This study addresses the role of iron ion in the cytotoxicity of VC. We found that iron supplementation increases the anti-tumor effect of VC, which was influenced by the cellular iron uptake pathway-transferrin (TF)/transferrin receptor (TFR) system. The TFR expression of tumors can be assessed by 68Ga-citrate PET imaging, and it would be helpful to screen out the tumor type which is more sensitive to VC combined with an iron supplementation treatment.

Abstract
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most burdened tumors worldwide, with a complex and multifactorial pathogenesis. Current treatment approaches involve different molecular targets. Phytochemicals have shown considerable promise in the prevention and treatment of HCC. We investigated the efficacy of two natural components, 1,8 cineole (Cin) and ellagic acid (EA), against diethylnitrosamine/2-acetylaminofluorene (DEN/2-AAF) induced HCC in rats. DEN/2-AAF showed deterioration of hepatic cells with an impaired functional capacity of the liver. In addition, the levels of tumor markers including alpha-fetoprotein, arginase-1, alpha-L-fucosidase, and ferritin were significantly increased, whereas the hepatic miR-122 level was significantly decreased in induced-HCC rats. Interestingly, treatment with Cin (100mg/kg) and EA (60mg/kg) powerfully restored these biochemical alterations. Moreover, Cin and EA treatment exhibited significant downregulation in transforming growth factor beta-1 (TGF-β1), Fascin-1 (FSCN1), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) key marker, vimentin, along with a restoration of histopathological findings compared to HCC group. Such effects were comparable to Doxorubicin (DOX) (2mg/kg); however, a little additive effect was evident through combining these phytochemicals with DOX. Altogether, this study highlighted 1,8 cineole and ellagic acid for the first time as promising phytochemicals for the treatment of hepatocarcinogenesis via regulating multiple targets.

Abstract
Purpose Distant metastasis is the main pattern of treatment failure in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) in the era of intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT). We aimed to establish and validate a prognostic nomogram to identify patients with a high risk of distant metastasis. Patients and Methods A total of 503 patients with nonmetastatic NPC were included in this retrospective study. We established a prognostic nomogram for distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS) based on the Cox proportional hazards model. The predictive discriminative ability and accuracy of the nomogram were assessed with the concordance index (C-index), receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, and calibration curve. The nomogram’s clinical utility was also evaluated using decision curve analysis (DCA) and Kaplan–Meier method. The predictive ability of the nomogram was validated in an independent cohort. Results The multivariate analysis showed that circulating CD4+ T lymphocytes, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), serum ferritin (SF), and N stage were independent prognostic factors for DMFS. Then, we constructed the nomogram based on these factors. The C-indexes of the nomogram for distant metastasis were 0.763 (95% CI: 0.685–0.841) and 0.760 (95% CI: 0.643–0.877) in the training cohort and validation cohort, respectively, which was higher than the 8th TNM staging system (0.672 and 0.677). The calibration curve showed that the prediction results of the nomogram were in high agreement with the actual observation. The ROC curve indicated that the nomogram had a better predictive ability than TNM staging. The DCA also demonstrated that the nomogram was clinically beneficial. In addition, the patients were classified into two different risk groups (high-risk, low-risk) by the nomogram. Conclusion As a supplement to TNM staging, our nomogram could provide a more effective and accurate prognostic prediction of distant metastasis in NPC patients. It has the potential to guide the individualized treatment of patients to improve their survival.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the sixth among the most common cancers and the fourth among cancer-related causes of death in the world. In the evaluation of liver function in HCC patients, parameters such as albumin-bilirubin, prothrombin time-international normalized ratio (PT-INR) to albumin ratio (PTAR) are used among new methods other than Child-Pugh and MELD scores. Biomarkers are widely used in clinical practice in cases such as diagnosing various diseases, evaluating treatment response and predicting prognosis. We aimed to evaluate the prognostic role of serum ferritin and INR/albumin ratio in patients with chronic liver disease who develop HCC. METHODS This retrospective study included 534 patients who were followed up with the diagnosis of HCC between 2009 and 2020. The patients with HCC etiology were evaluated in 3 groups (chronic hepatitis B group, chronic hepatitis C group, and other group). When comparing serum ferritin level and prothromin time-international normalized ratio to albumin ratio with Child Pugh score (CTP) in chronic liver patients with HCC, liver functional reserve and its role in predicting prognosis were investigated. RESULTS The serum ferritin level was 226 ± 334 in the CTP A group, 239 ± 302 in the CTP B group, and 678 ± 966 in the CTP C group, and the p value was 0.001. The PTAR CTP group was 0.35 ± 0.10, the CTP B group was 0.50 ± 0.26, the CTP C group was 1.18 ± 6.01, and the p value was 0.001. Multivariant analysis results showed that ferritin hazard ratio is 1.00, 95% CI 0.99-1.00, and p value was 0.09, and PTAR hazard ratio is 1.38, 95% CI 2.37-8.00, and p value was 0.49. The etiological distribution of HCC was determined as HBV (61.6%), HCV (19.9%), and other etiologies (18.5%). Significant values were determined for age, gender, glucose, GGT, T. cholesterol, and tumor diameter parameters according to etiological distribution. CONCLUSIONS Serum ferritin level and PTAR score increased in proportion to the severity of liver disease and were associated with poor prognosis. We think that high serum ferritin and PTAR score is a prognostic biomarker in predicting the synthesis function of the liver and mortality in critically ill patients with cirrhosis.

Abstract
Iron is an essential trace mineral element in almost all living cells and organisms. However, cellular iron metabolism pathways are disturbed in most cancer cell types. Cancer cells have a high demand of iron. To maintain rapid growth and proliferation, cancer cells absorb large amounts of iron by altering expression of iron metabolism related proteins. However, iron can catalyze the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) through Fenton reaction. Nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 (Nrf2) is an important player in the resistance to oxidative damage by inducing the transcription of antioxidant genes. Aberrant activation of Nrf2 is observed in most cancer cell types. It has been revealed that the over-activation of Nrf2 promotes cell proliferation, suppresses cell apoptosis, enhances the self-renewal capability of cancer stem cells, and even increases the chemoresistance and radioresistance of cancer cells. Recently, several genes involving cellular iron homeostasis are identified under the control of Nrf2. Since cancer cells require amounts of iron and Nrf2 plays pivotal roles in oxidative defense and iron metabolism, it is highly probable that Nrf2 is a potential modulator orchestrating iron homeostasis and redox balance in cancer cells. In this hypothesis, we summarize the recent findings of the role of iron and Nrf2 in cancer cells and demonstrate how Nrf2 balances the oxidative stress induced by iron through regulating antioxidant enzymes and iron metabolism. This hypothesis provides new insights into the role of Nrf2 in cancer progression. Since ferroptosis is dependent on lipid peroxide and iron accumulation, Nrf2 inhibition may dramatically increase sensitivity to ferroptosis. The combination of Nrf2 inhibitors with ferroptosis inducers may exert greater efficacy on cancer therapy.

Abstract
Melanoma, the most aggressive skin cancer, is mainly treated with BRAF inhibitors or immunotheareapy. However, most patients who initially responded to BRAF inhibitors or immunotheareapy become resistant following relapse. Ferroptosis is a form of regulated cell death characterized by its dependence on iron ions and the accumulation of lipid reactive oxygen species (ROS). Recent studies have demonstrated that ferroptosis is a good method for tumor treatment, and iron homeostasis is closely associated with ferroptosis. Iron regulatory protein (IRP)1 and 2 play important roles in maintaining iron homeostasis, but their functions in ferroptosis have not been investigated. The present study reported that the expression of IRP1 and IRP2 was increased by the ferroptosis inducers erastin and RSL3 in melanoma cells. Depletion of IRP1 significantly suppressed erastin- and RSL3-induced ferroptosis. IRP2 had a weak effect but could enhance the promoting function of IRP1 on ferroptosis. Further, erastin and RSL3 promoted the transition of aconitase 1 to IRP1, which regulated downstream iron metabolism proteins, including transferrin receptor (TFRC), ferroportin (FPN) and ferritin heavy chain 1 (FTH1). Moreover, overexpression of TFRC and knockdown of FPN and FTH1 significantly promoted erastin- and RSL3-induced ferroptosis in IRP1 knockdown melanoma cells. Collectively, the present findings indicate that IRP1 plays an essential role in erastin- and RSL3-induced ferroptosis by regulating iron homeostasis.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Cancer may lead to abnormalities in electrolyte levels and acid-base disturbances in affected patients that could be induced by the tumor itself or by chemotherapy treatment. Thus, early detection is vital to improve short-term outcome and quality of life.
AIM: This study aims to assess the electrolyte and protein changes in cancer patients on chemotherapy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cohort study was carried out on 100 newly diagnosed patients with cancer in Al-Amal National Radiation Oncology Hospital in Baghdad, Iraq, during the period from January 2019 to July 2019. An assessment of the studied samples was conducted as a baseline measure before receiving chemotherapy and after the third cycle of that treatment. Quantitative parameters included measurements of serum magnesium, calcium, sodium, chloride, potassium, zinc, Hb1Ac, total protein, and ferritin. Data analysis was carried out using Student’s t-test for variable levels. Level of significance of ≤0.05 was considered as significant.
RESULTS: The studied sample comprised 77 females (77%) and 23 males (23%). There were significant decreases in the levels of magnesium and zinc while no significant changes were noted in the levels of other electrolytes. On the other hand, there was a significant decrease in the level of proteins and a significant rise in HBA1c and ferritin.
CONCLUSION: Cancer patients on chemotherapy regimens suffer from major changes in the levels of vitamins, elements, and neurotransmitter that affect their lifestyle, survival, and prognosis. Frequent regular monitoring of such changes is required to harvest a positive impact on the lifestyle of cancer patients lifestyle and their outcome.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Studies have shown that serum ferritin (SF) has unfavourable prognostic value in hepatobiliary and pancreas (HBP) cancers. This meta-analysis aimed to comprehensively assess the prognostic role of pretreatment SF in patients with HBP cancers. METHODS Eligible studies published before January 2020 were obtained through a comprehensive search in the PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library and EMBASE databases. Pooled HRs and 95% CIs were then employed as effect sizes. RESULTS Seven studies comprising 1244 patients were pooled. Elevated pretreatment SF was associated with worse overall survival (OS) (HR 1.60, 95% CI 1.36 to 1.88, p<0.001) and recurrence-free survival/progression-free survival/time to recurrence (HR 1.70, 95% CI 1.15 to 2.52, p=0.008). Significant prognostic value of elevated pretreatment SF on OS was detected in the subgroups regardless of the cancer type, race, SF cut-off value, tumour-node-metastasis stage and Newcastle-Ottawa Scale score. CONCLUSION Elevated pretreatment SF was associated with worse survival outcome of patients with HBP cancers. As such, it may serve as a novel prognostic biomarker for HBP cancers.

Abstract
Ferritin is the most important iron storage form and is known to influence tumor immunity. We previously showed that expression of ferritin light chain (FTL) and ferritin heavy chain (FTH1) subunits is increased in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSC). Here, we analyzed solid tumor datasets from The Cancer Genome Atlas and Genotype-Tissue Expression databases to investigate correlations between FTL and FTH1 expressions and (i) patient survival, using univariate, multivariate, Kaplan-Meier and Receiver Operator Characteristic analysis; and (ii) tumor-infiltrating immune cell subsets, using the bioinformatics tools Estimation of Stomal and Immune cells in Malignant Tumor tissues, Microenvironment Cell Population-counter, Tumor Immune Estimation Resource, and Tumor Immunology Miner. We found that FTL and FTH1 are upregulated and downregulated, respectively, in most of the human cancers analyzed. Tumor FTL levels were associated with prognosis in patients with lower grade glioma (LGG), whereas FTH1 levels were associated with prognosis in patients with liver hepatocellular carcinoma, HNSC, LGG, and kidney renal papillary cell carcinoma. In many cancers, FTL and FTH1 levels was significantly positively correlated with tumor infiltration by tumor-associated macrophages and T regulatory cells. These results suggest an important role for FTL and FTH1 in regulating tumor immunity to solid cancers.

Abstract
Leukocytes, including macrophages and T cells, represent key players in the human immune system, which plays a considerable role in the development and progression of tumors by immune surveillance or immune escape. Boosting the recruitment of leukocytes into the tumor microenvironment and promoting their antitumor responses have been hot areas of research in recent years. Although immunotherapy has manifested a certain level of success in some malignancies, the overall effectiveness is far from satisfactory. Iron is an essential trace element required in multiple, normal cellular processes, such as DNA synthesis and repair, cellular respiration, metabolism, and signaling, while dysregulated iron metabolism has been declared one of the metabolic hallmarks of malignant cancer cells. Furthermore, iron is implicated in the modulation of innate and adaptive immune responses, and elucidating the targeted regulation of iron metabolism may have the potential to benefit antitumor immunity and cancer treatment. In the present review, we briefly summarize the roles of leukocytes and iron metabolism in tumorigenesis, as well as their crosstalk in the tumor microenvironment. The combination of immunotherapy with targeted regulation of iron and iron-dependent regulated cell death (ferroptosis) may be a focus of future research.

Abstract
Aim: Evaluation of the biocompatibility and radiosensitizer potential of citrate-coated cobalt (cit-CF) and nickel (cit-NF) ferrite nanoparticles (NPs). Materials & methods: Normal fibroblast and breast cancer cells were treated with different concentrations of citrate-coated ferrite NPs (cit-NPs) and irradiated with a cobalt-60 source at doses of 1 and 3 Gy. After 24 h, cell metabolism, morphology alterations and nanoparticle uptake were evaluated. Results: Cit-CF and cit-NF NPs showed no toxicity to normal cells up to 250 and 100 μg.ml-1, respectively. Combination of cit-NP and ionizing radiation resulted in up to fivefold increase in the radiation therapeutic efficacy against breast cancer cells. Conclusion: Cit-CF and cit-NF NPs are suitable candidates for application as breast cancer cell radiosensitizers.

Abstract
Purpose: Esophageal cancer is one of the most common malignancies worldwide. Ubiquitin-dependent degradation of regulatory proteins reportedly plays a central role in diverse cellular processes. This study investigated the expression levels of ubiquitin in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma tissues and the functions of ubiquitin in the context of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma progression. Methods: The expression of ubiquitin in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and normal esophageal samples was determined via immunohistochemistry. Serum ubiquitin levels were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The association between serum ubiquitin level and clinicopathological factors was analyzed. Real-time PCR analysis was employed to measure the mRNA levels of the ubiquitin coding genes ubiquitin B and ubiquitin C. Proliferation assays, colony formation assays, and Transwell-based assays were used to determine the influence of ubiquitin on cell growth and cell invasion. Proteomic analysis was performed to identify the proteins associated with ubiquitin. Results: Ubiquitin expression in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma tissues was markedly higher than that in normal and tumor adjacent tissues. The levels of ubiquitin in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma serum samples were significantly higher than those in healthy controls. Serum ubiquitin levels were correlated with tumor stage and lymph node metastasis. To silence the expression of ubiquitin, we knocked down the ubiquitin coding genes ubiquitin B and ubiquitin C in TE-1 and Eca-109 cells. Silencing ubiquitin resulted in the suppression of cell growth, chemoresistance, colony formation and cell migration in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma cells. Proteomic analysis in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma cells showed that knockdown of ubiquitin coding genes deregulated the expression of 159 proteins (92 were upregulated and 67 were downregulated) involved in multiple pathways. These proteins included ferritin light chain, ferritin heavy chain, cellular retinoic acid-binding protein 2, and DNA replication factor 1. Conclusion: Ubiquitin expression is upregulated in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma tissues and serum samples. Serum ubiquitin levels were correlated with tumor stage and lymph node metastasis. Downregulation of ubiquitin suppresses the aggressive phenotypes of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma cells by complex mechanisms; ubiquitin may represent a novel target for the treatment of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

Abstract
1,2-Dichloropropane (1,2-DCP) is recognized as the causative agent for cholangiocarcinoma among offset color proof-printing workers in Japan. The aim of the present study was to characterize the molecular mechanisms of 1,2-DCP-induced hepatotoxic effects by proteomic analysis. We analyzed quantitatively the differential expression of proteins in the mouse liver and investigated the role of P450 in mediating the effects of 1,2-DCP. Male C57BL/6JJcl mice were exposed to 0, 50, 250, or 1250 ppm 1,2-DCP and treated with either 1-aminobenzotriazole (1-ABT), a nonselective P450 inhibitor, or saline, for 8 h/day for 4 weeks. Two-dimensional difference in gel electrophoresis (2D-DIGE) combined with matrix-assisted laser-desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF/TOF/MS) was used to detect and identify proteins affected by the treatment. PANTHER overrepresentation test on the identified proteins was conducted. 2D-DIGE detected 61 spots with significantly different intensity between 0 and 250 ppm 1,2-DCP groups. Among them, 25 spots were identified by MALDI-TOF/TOF/MS. Linear regression analysis showed significant trend with 1,2-DCP level in 17 proteins in mice co-treated with 1-ABT. 1-ABT mitigated the differential expression of these proteins. The gene ontology enrichment analysis showed overrepresentation of proteins functionally related to nickel cation binding, carboxylic ester hydrolase activity, and catalytic activity. The results demonstrated that exposure to 1,2-DCP altered the expression of proteins related with catalytic and carboxylic ester hydrolase activities, and that such effect was mediated by P450 enzymatic activity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Serum ferritin (SF) test has been widely used in clinical practice. However, its reference intervals (RIs) vary depending on the analytical method and ethnic origin. This study was to establish the RIs using indirect method for SF in Chinese adults. METHODS SF was assayed on Abbott i2000SR analyzer. The SF test results of all health examinees (8913 males aged 18-93 years and 5397 females aged 18-90 years) between December 2010 and April 2019 were obtained from our laboratory information system. After Box-Cox transformation of raw data and exclusion of outliers, parametric and non-parametric approaches were used to calculate 95% RIs. The correlation between SF levels and ages, and the differences in SF levels between subgroups were also analyzed. RESULTS SF levels in females were significantly different from those in males (Z = 88.96, Z* = 23.17; Z > Z*) and showed a weak positive correlation with age (r = .466, P < .0001). The RIs based on parametric approach in males were 66.12-561.58 µg/L, whereas in all females were 3.59-269.59 µg/L, females aged <50 years 3.26-148.02 µg/L and those aged ≥50 years 17.28-303.27 µg/L. The RIs based on non-parametric approach in males were 65.00-571.37 µg/L whereas in all females were 4.00-254.00 µg/L, females aged <50 years 4.00-152.00 µg/L and those aged ≥50 years 16.00-304.05 µg/L. CONCLUSIONS Our indirect RIs for SF were markedly different from the manufacturer's recommended RIs and might be more suitable for Chinese adults, which would be helpful in interpreting laboratory data and clinical decision-making.

Abstract
Demanded as an essential trace element that supports cell growth and basic functions, iron can be harmful and cancerogenic though. By exchanging between its different oxidized forms, iron overload induces free radical formation, lipid peroxidation, DNA, and protein damages, leading to carcinogenesis or ferroptosis. Iron also plays profound roles in modulating tumor microenvironment and metastasis, maintaining genomic stability and controlling epigenetics. in order to meet the high requirement of iron, neoplastic cells have remodeled iron metabolism pathways, including acquisition, storage, and efflux, which makes manipulating iron homeostasis a considerable approach for cancer therapy. Several iron chelators and iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) has recently been developed for cancer intervention and presented considerable effects. This review summarizes some latest findings about iron metabolism function and regulation mechanism in cancer and the application of iron chelators and IONPs in cancer diagnosis and therapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To explore the prognostic value of C-reactive protein/albumin ratio (CAR) in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), we conducted a comprehensive meta-analysis of relevant literature on the association between CAR and NPC outcome. In recent years, an increasing number of studies has been published analyzing the possible prognostic utility of C-reactive protein/albumin ratio (CAR) in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), but the results are still controversial. METHODS A relevant literature search was performed by using the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, CBM, Wanfang, VIP, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases to evaluate the prognostic value of CAR in patients with NPC. The last date of our primary search was December 5, 2017. This meta-analysis was conducted on the basis of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Pooled hazard ratio (HR) with 95% confidence interval (95% CI) was utilized to estimate the association of CAR and overall survival (OS) and distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS). RESULTS Five studies that enrolled 5533 patients with NPC were finally quantified. Our findings revealed that high pretreatment CAR was significantly associated with poor OS (HR = 1.58, 95% CI = 1.36-1.83, P < .001) and DMFS (HR = 1.25, 95% CI = 1.09-1.44, P = .002). The findings from most subgroup meta-analyses were in line with those from the overall meta-analyses. No significant heterogeneity was observed among the included studies for OS and DMFS (P > .05); however, publication bias was found for OS (P < .05). CONCLUSION Our meta-analysis suggests that high pretreatment CAR indicates poor prognosis in NPC. Thus, pretreatment CAR serves as a prognostic marker in NPC and can be used to evaluate prognosis in clinical work.
