Nurses' perceptions of a pressure ulcer prevention care bundle: a qualitative descriptive study

Incidence of Pressure Injury Among Older Adults Transitioning from Long-term Care to the ED

OBJECTIVE

To identify sociodemographic, health condition, and organizational/process factors associated with pressure injury (PI) incidence during older adults' emergency transitions from long-term care (LTC) to the ED.

METHODS

Emergency transitions were tracked for older adults within included LTC facilities to participating EDs in two urban centers located in provinces in Canada. Binary logistic regression was used to examine the influence of sociodemographic, service use, and client health and function factors on the incidence of PIs during transitions from LTC facilities to EDs.

RESULTS

Having a mobility issue (odds ratio [OR], 4.318; 95% CI, 1.344-13.870), transitioning from a publicly owned versus a nonprofit volunteer LTC facility (OR, 4.886; 95% CI, 1.157-20.634), and time from ED arrival to return to LTC being 7 to 9 days (OR, 41.327; 95% CI, 2.691-634.574) or greater than 9 days (OR, 77.639; 95% CI, 5.727-1,052.485) significantly increased the odds of experiencing a new skin injury upon return to LTC. A higher number of reported reasons for emergency transition (up to 4) significantly decreased the odds of a new PI upon return to LTC (OR, 0.315; 95% CI, 0.113-0.880).

CONCLUSIONS

The study findings can be used to identify LTC residents at increased risk for developing new skin injuries during an emergency transition, namely, those with mobility impairment, those requiring inpatient care for 6 or more days, and those transitioning from publicly owned LTC facilities. Evaluating the uptake and effectiveness of single-pronged and multipronged interventions such as visual cues for patient turning through online monitoring, consistent risk assessments, and improved nutrition in all care settings are vital next steps in preventing skin injuries in this population.

Barriers and facilitators to implementing pressure injury prevention and management guidelines in acute care: A mixed-methods systematic review

BACKGROUND

Evidence-based pressure injury prevention and management is a global health service priority. Low uptake of pressure injury guidelines leads to compromised patient outcomes. Understanding clinicians' and patients' views on the barriers and facilitators to implementing guidelines and mapping the identified barriers and facilitators to the Theoretical Domains Framework and behaviour change techniques will inform an end-user and theoretically informed intervention to improve guideline uptake in the acute care setting.

OBJECTIVES

To synthesise quantitative and qualitative evidence on i) hospital clinicians' and inpatients' perceptions and experiences of evidence-based pressure injury practices and ii) barriers and facilitators to implementing guidelines.

DESIGN

A convergent integrated mixed-methods systematic review was conducted using the JBI approach.

DATA SOURCE

English language peer-reviewed studies published from 2009 to August 2022 were identified from MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO and Cochrane Central Library.

REVIEW METHODS

Included studies reported: i) acute care hospital clinicians' and patients' perceptions and experiences of evidence-based pressure injury practices and ii) barriers and facilitators to implementing guidelines. The Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool was used for critical appraisal. Quantitative data was transformed into qualitised data, then thematically synthesised with qualitative data, comparing clinicians' and patients' views. Barriers and facilitators associated with each main theme were mapped to the Theoretical Domains Framework and allocated to relevant behaviour change techniques.

RESULTS

Fifty-five out of 14,488 studies of variable quality (29 quantitative, 22 qualitative, 4 mixed-methods) met the inclusion criteria. Four main themes represent factors thought to influence the implementation of evidence-based guidelines: 1) nurse-led multidisciplinary care, 2) patient participation in care, 3) practicability of implementation and 4) attitudes towards pressure injury prevention and management. Most barriers identified by clinicians were related to the third theme, whilst for patients, there were multiple barriers under theme 2. Barriers were mainly mapped to the Knowledge domain and Environmental Context and Resources domain and were matched to the behaviour change techniques of "instruction on how to perform a behaviour" and "restructuring the physical environment". Most facilitators mentioned by clinicians and patients were related to themes 1 and 2, respectively, and mapped to the Environmental Context and Resources domain. All patient-related attitudes in theme 4 were facilitators.

CONCLUSIONS

These review findings highlight the most influential factors related to implementing evidence-based pressure injury care from clinicians' and patients' views and mapping these factors to the Theoretical Domains Framework and behaviour change techniques has contributed to developing a stakeholder-tailored implementation intervention in acute care settings.

Barriers and facilitators to pressure injury prevention in hospitals: A mixed methods systematic review

OBJECTIVE

To systematically synthesize research evidence on barriers and facilitators to pressure injury prevention in hospital settings.

METHODS

A systematic literature review of quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research was undertaken using PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, and Cochrane Library. Studies that reported barriers or/and facilitators to pressure injury prevention in the acute care settings and published in English from 2008 to 2022 were included. Studies were excluded if they were conducted in residential care facilities and nursing homes, or other long-term community care settings. Two authors independently screened articles against the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Quality appraisal was conducted by two authors by using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. Reported results were mapped to the Theoretical Domains Framework to identify the barriers and facilitators to pressure injury prevention.

RESULTS

A total of 78 studies were included. There were 65 quantitative studies, 11 qualitative studies, and two mix-methods studies. The most salient Theoretical Domains Framework domains identified in this review were "Knowledge", "Skills", "Environmental Context and Resources", "Optimism", "Social/Professional Role and Identity", and "Social influences".

CONCLUSION

The barriers and facilitators to pressure injury prevention in hospital settings identified in this systematic review were diverse, and included issues at both individual and organizational level. Healthcare organizations can address the barriers and facilitators from the influential Theoretical Domains Framework domains. Future research is required to investigate the effectiveness of behaviour change interventions that specifically target these barriers and facilitators to pressure injury prevention.

A Process Evaluation of the National Implementation of a Bundle for Central Venous Catheter Care for Hemodialysis

Key Points

Health professionals resisted practice change in environments of low infection where the perception of a need to change is small. Standardizing care of central venous catheters for hemodialysis requires breaking down silos of practice to benefit all patients. Knowledge of and adherence to guidelines, formal change management, and ongoing facilitation are required to implement standardized care.

Background

Implementation of a care bundle standardizing insertion, management, and removal practices to reduce infection related to central venous catheters (CVCs) used for hemodialysis was evaluated in a stepped wedge, cluster randomized controlled trial conducted at 37 Australian hospitals providing kidney services, with no reduction in catheter-related blood stream infection detected. This process evaluation explored the barriers, enablers, and unintended consequences of the implementation to explain the trial outcomes.

Methods

Qualitative process evaluation using pre-post semistructured interviews with 38 (19 nursing and 19 medical) and 44 (25 nursing and 19 medical) Australian health professionals involved in hemodialysis CVC management. Analysis was guided by the process implementation domain of the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research.

Results

Key influences on bundle uptake were that clinicians were open to change that was evidence-based and driven by guidelines and had a desire to improve practice and patient outcomes. However, resistance to change in environments of low infection, working in silos of practice, and a need for individualized delivery of patient education created barriers to uptake. Unintended effects of increased costs and lack of interoperability of systems for data collection were reported. Because the trial was in progress at the time of qualitative data collection, perceptions of the bundle may have been influenced by the fact that practices of participants were being observed as a part of the trial.

Conclusion

This national process evaluation revealed that health professionals who reported experiencing a benefit viewed the bundle positively. Those who already provided most of the recommended care or perceived that their patient population was not included in the research evidence that underpinned the interventions, resisted the implementation of the bundle. Potentially, formal change management processes using facilitation may improve implementation of evidence-based practice.

Formal Caregiver Experiences of Caring for Individuals at Risk for or with a Pressure Injury: A Metasynthesis

OBJECTIVE

To explore formal caregiver experiences caring for patients with a pressure injury (PI) or who are at risk of developing a PI.

DATA SOURCES

In November 2019, the researchers searched CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature) and MEDLINE databases for articles related to caregivers and their experiences with PI prevention and care.

STUDY SELECTION

Twenty-eight qualitative studies were included in this review.

DATA EXTRACTION

Literature was graded and critiqued with regard to design and research quality and then synthesized utilizing a narrative approach.

DATA SYNTHESIS

Four themes were found within the literature: knowledge and education, environment and resources, collaboration and role clarity, and risk assessment.

CONCLUSIONS

Across healthcare settings, formal caregivers noted the importance of effective PI knowledge and education. Recognizing both barriers and facilitators to PI prevention and management within the healthcare environment can help decision-makers make informed choices to improve PI management within their settings. In addition, developing interprofessional team skills and relationships, rather than practicing in silos, may have an impact on PI management. Although there are many interventions that reduce PI risk and assist in the management of PIs, not every intervention is appropriate for every healthcare setting. Clinician education on PIs, along with new interventions, could significantly impact the effectiveness of patient care.

Experiences of caregivers of community-dwelling older persons with moderate to advanced dementia in adapting the Namaste Care program: a qualitative descriptive study

BACKGROUND

Globally many older persons with dementia are living at home to maintain independence within the community. As older persons with dementia transition from early to moderate or advanced stages of dementia they require more support from family members and friends to complete their daily activities. Family and friend caregivers, however, often report a lack of preparation for their caregiving role. There are few psychosocial programs that can be delivered by caregivers of community-dwelling older persons with moderate to advanced dementia. Namaste Care is a psychosocial intervention, predominantly used in long-term care, to improve the quality of life of persons with advanced dementia. Namaste Care provides multisensory stimulation for persons with dementia through meaningful activities such as music, massage, aromatherapy, and nutrition. There have been limited attempts at adapting Namaste Care for use by caregivers in the community.There is a need to involve caregivers in adapting programs and understanding their experiences in research involvement so that strategies can be put in place for a positive experience. The purpose of this study is to explore the experiences of caregivers who participated in workshop sessions to adapt Namaste Care for community-dwelling older persons with moderate to advanced dementia.

METHODS

A qualitative descriptive design was used. Six caregivers residing in Ontario, Canada attended virtual workshop sessions (i.e., by phone or videoconference) that were guided by the Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR) Patient Engagement Framework. Caregivers completed individual post-workshop interviews. Experiential thematic analysis was used to analyze interviews and post-interview researcher notes.

RESULTS

Key findings were that caregivers had a positive experience in adapting Namaste Care by learning how to improve their caregiving skills and being supported to engage in research through multiple facilitators such as flexible scheduling and an inclusive and respectful environment. Having designated time for discussions between caregivers was perceived as important to forming partnerships within the group to support co-creation of knowledge.

CONCLUSION

Findings support the need to improve caregiver research engagement processes by ensuring that caregivers can benefit through learning opportunities and discussions and empowering caregivers to value their contributions in adapting interventions.

Barriers and enablers to nurses' use of harm prevention strategies for older patients in hospital: A cross-sectional survey

BACKGROUND

Preventable harms during hospitalization pose a major challenge for health systems globally. Nurse-led strategies provide comprehensive harm prevention to keep the most vulnerable patients safe in hospital, but gaps in care are common. Nursing roles and activities to prevent harm to patients during acute hospitalization are poorly understood.

AIM

The aim of this study was to identify nurses' perceived enablers and barriers to the implementation of comprehensive harm prevention for older people admitted to an acute hospital setting.

DESIGN

Anonymous, online, cross-sectional survey.

METHODS

The adapted Influences on Patient Safety Behaviours Questionnaire (IPSBQ) was used to collect data from nurses working on five general medicine wards across three hospitals of a single tertiary health service in Australia in 2019. Participants also rated their perceptions of overall quality of care, missed care and awareness of strategies for an eight-factor framework for comprehensive harm prevention. The STROBE reporting checklist was used.

RESULTS

Ward response rates between 35% and 58% resulted in 132 complete questionnaires for analyses. High mean scores for behavioural regulation (3.28), beliefs about capabilities (2.96) and environmental context and resources (2.73) indicated these domains were perceived by nurses as enablers. Low mean scores for the domains of intentions (1.65), beliefs about consequences (1.69), optimism (1.72) and professional role and identity (1.85) indicated these were barriers to comprehensive harm prevention by nurses. High perceived quality of care (scored 9-10/10) (p = .024), and awareness of strategies for the eight-factor framework (p = .019) were significant enablers of comprehensive harm prevention.

CONCLUSION

Targeted evidence-based strategies that include education, persuasion, incentivization, coercion and modelling would be most useful for promoting comprehensive harm prevention by nurses. However, to be most effective the harm prevention strategy may need to be tailored for each ward.

Use of Care Bundles to Prevent Healthcare-Associated Infections in Intensive Care Units: Nurses' Views

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the views of nurses working in intensive care units regarding the use of care bundles in preventing healthcare-associated infections. Methods: This study used the focus-group interview method, which is one of the qualitative methods. Two focus-group interviews, each lasting about half an hour, were conducted with 14 intensive care unit nurses. Qualitative data obtained from the interviews were recorded on tape and in note form. The interviews were then transcribed and analyzed. The transcribed data from the focus-group discussions were grouped by theme and concept, and the statements of the participants were coded numerically according to these groupings. Three themes and six subthemes emerged in analyzing the qualitative data. Results: The nurses defined care bundles as "materials that provide integrated care for patients". They also stated that their benefits included providing a tool for self-monitoring, support and guidance for both patients and nurses. When whether they had experienced any difficulties while using care bundles, they stated that they had not experienced any. Furthermore, nurses stated that care bundles improved their perspectives, and that they were must-have items in intensive care units providing reminders rather than a waste of time. Conclusion: It is that the participation of nurses is important so that care bundles are used more widespread in order to prevent healthcare-associated infections in intensive care units.

Process evaluations undertaken alongside randomised controlled trials in the hospital setting: A scoping review

Background

There is increasing recognition of the importance of undertaking process evaluations alongside implementation of health interventions by examining mechanisms of impact and contextual factors. However, a comprehensive synthesis of process evaluations undertaken alongside clinical trials in hospital settings is lacking. We undertook a scoping review to address this gap.

Methods

This review was guided by the methodological framework for scoping studies. Studies were identified using four databases; Ovid Medline, EBSCO CINAHL, EMBASE and Scopus. Two authors independently screened all titles and available abstracts, with a third author available to adjudicate. Studies were eligible for inclusion if they described a process evaluation undertaken alongside a randomised controlled trial in the hospital setting. Data were abstracted by one author and checked by two others and analysed both descriptively and using inductive content analysis.

Results

Data were extracted from 30 articles reporting on 15 trials, most of which were cluster randomised trials (c-RTs) (n = 12). The most common data collection methods used in process evaluations were interviews, questionnaires or surveys, and records or logs. Data analysis revealed three themes relative to how authors: use process data to interpret, understand and explain trial outcomes; evaluate responses to the intervention; and consider the implementation context.

Conclusions

Findings from this review demonstrate the complex nature of intervention implementation in the hospital setting. Overall, there is need for standardised reporting of process evaluations and more explicit descriptions of how authors use frameworks to guide their evaluation.

Barriers and enablers to implementation of pressure injury prevention in hospitalized adults: a mixed methods systematic review protocol

OBJECTIVE

The objective of the proposed systematic review is to determine the barriers and enablers (or facilitators) to the implementation of pressure injury prevention among adults receiving care in the hospital setting.

INTRODUCTION

Hospital-acquired pressure injuries are preventable; however, they remain an ongoing safety and quality health care concern in many countries. There are various evidence-based preventative interventions for pressure injuries, but their implementation in clinical practice is limited. An understanding of the different factors that support (enablers or facilitators) and inhibit (barriers) the implementation of these interventions from different perspectives is important, so that targeted strategies can be incorporated into implementation plans.

INCLUSION CRITERIA

This review will include quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods studies that investigate barriers and/or enablers in relation to hospital-acquired pressure injury prevention in hospitalized adults. Only English publications will be considered, with no publication date restrictions.

METHODS

The systematic review will be conducted in accordance with the JBI methodology for mixed methods systematic review. Published studies will be searched in PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, PsycINFO and Scopus. Gray literature will also be considered. Critical appraisal and data extraction will be performed using standardized tools, followed by data transformation. Data synthesis will follow the convergent integrated approach.

Pressure ulcers: the core, care and cure approach

Pressure ulcer/injury remains a significant health problem in the community, requiring comprehensive care. Nurses are involved in the management and prevention of pressure injury. However, to date, studies focusing on applying nursing theory to pressure ulcer care have been limited. In the present study, the three dimensions of Lydia Hall's 1964 theory-core, care and cure-are extensively discussed and linked with the practice of pressure injury management. It is hoped that this review will help community nurses understand the application of this nursing theory to the prevention and management of pressure injury.

Context as a Facilitator of the Implementation of Evidence-based Nursing: A Meta-synthesis

Nurses have numerous difficulties in implementing science due to obstacles related to the work context. The aim is to explore the work-context-related facilitators of the application of evidence in clinical practice by nursing professionals. Qualitative meta-synthesis of primary studies on nurses' experiences of work-context-related facilitators, as defined by the Promoting Action on Research Implementation in Health Services model. Using the Qualitative Appraisal and Review Instrument of the Joanna Briggs Institute. Of the total 57 primary research articles included, an explanatory model of the facilitating factors related to the work context was generated on the basis of four general categories: institutional support (leadership), multidisciplinary support (teamwork and communication), culture of improving quality of care (nursing professionals' attitudes towards change) and use of research (valuing research). Action can be taken on the facilitating factors of the evidence-based practice application in nursing clinical environments, providing resources and motivation from the organization.

Patient education materials on pressure injury prevention in hospitals and health services in Victoria, Australia: Availability and content analysis

Pressure injuries (PIs) are a common quality indicator for hospital care, and preventing PIs often requires patient engagement; as such, Australian consensus research has recommended that high-quality education materials be made to patients for PIs via hospital networks. The purpose of the present study was to assess the availability and accuracy of patient education materials on PIs in publicly available hospital websites in Victoria, Australia. Two independent coders assessed 212 websites for content on PI prevention and management, analysing availability and accuracy of PI definitions, risk factors, preventive strategies, referral, visual tools, consumer endorsement, information for family/carers, and translation on community languages. A greater proportion of hospitals did not have any patient education materials on PI prevention publicly available, with private hospitals (compared with public) and metropolitan hospitals (compared to rural) more likely to have materials available on their sites. The available materials contained accurate messages on PI defining characteristics and risk factors for PIs, although there was considerable variability on the availability of other information. Our findings suggest a significant deficit in the availability of educational materials for acute care patients and their families. There is a need for evidence-based, consumer-endorsed, uniform materials on all hospital websites to prevent PIs in acute care.

Barriers and facilitators for caregiver involvement in the home care of people with pressure injuries: A qualitative study

Aim

To explore the barriers and facilitators perceived by home caregivers regarding their involvement in the home care of people with pressure injuries.

Background

Although home caregivers are key in the process of caring for people with pressure injuries, little is known about their perceptions regarding their involvement in the same.

Methods

A qualitative study based on grounded theory involving a theoretical sample of 15 home caregivers of people with pressure injuries within the health district of Puertollano, Spain.

Results

This study identified three barriers (feminization of care, necessary life adaptations as a home caregiver, and the organization of health services) and three facilitators (the perceived family duty for caring, willingness to provide care, and satisfaction with the care received on behalf of primary care services) associated with caregiver involvement in the home care of pressure injuries.

Conclusions

The care of a person with pressure injuries is perceived as a duty and requires important adaptations affecting the home caregiver’s personal, social and work life. The emotional closeness and trust that develops between a patient and the primary care staff equals an involvement which, in turn, also has positive results for both the home caregiver and the patient.

Current practice in dialysis central venous catheter management: Multi-disciplinary renal team perspectives

AIM

To explore the current practices related to the insertion, management and removal of dialysis central venous catheters (CVCs) used in patients with chronic kidney disease requiring haemodialysis.

METHODS

This qualitative descriptive study involved semi-structured interviews with surgeons, interventional radiologists, renal physicians, dialysis nurses, renal access nurses and renal researchers involved in the care of patients with chronic kidney disease requiring haemodialysis. Data were collected from staff at eight hospitals in six states and territories of Australia. Thirty-eight face-to-face interviews were conducted. A modified five-step qualitative content analysis approach was used to analyse the data.

RESULTS

Improved visualization technology and its use by interventional radiologists has steered insertions to specialist teams in specialist locations. This is thought to have decreased risk and improved patient outcomes. Nurses were identified as the professional group responsible for maintaining catheter access integrity, preventing access failure and reducing access-related complications. While best practice was considered important, justifications for variations in practice related to local patient and environment challenges were identified.

CONCLUSION

The interdisciplinary team is central in the insertion, maintenance, removal and education of patients regarding dialysis CVCs. Clinicians temper research-based decision-making about central dialysis access catheter management with knowledge of individual, environmental and patient factors. Strategies to ensure guidelines are appropriately translated for use in a wide variety of settings are necessary for patient safety.

Preventing pressure ulcers in nursing homes using a care bundle: A feasibility study

Pressure ulcers can be painful and negatively affect health-related quality of life and healthcare costs. Many people living in nursing homes are at risk of developing a pressure ulcer. Nursing home staff, tissue viability nurses and researchers have co-designed the first theory and evidence-informed care bundle specifically for nursing homes, which consists of three prevention practices (skin inspection, support surfaces, repositioning) and a range of behaviour change techniques to promote these practices. We conducted a mixed methods feasibility study of the use of this care bundle in one nursing home in the North of England using an uncontrolled, before-and-after study design. We collected quantitative data on pressure ulcer prevention behaviours of the nursing home staff and pressure ulcer incidence rates for 5 weeks prior to implementing the bundle. Data collection continued for a further 9 weeks during the bundle implementation phase. We explored adherence to the bundle and participants' experiences of using it. The Conceptual Framework for Implementation Fidelity and the Theoretical Domains Framework informed the semi-structured interviews. Quantitative and qualitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics and deductive framework analysis respectively. We collected data for 462 resident bed days prior to implementing the bundle; five new pressure ulcers were recorded and repositioning was the only documented pressure ulcer prevention behaviour. We collected data for 1,181 resident bed days during the intervention phase; no new pressure ulcers developed and the documented prevention behaviours included repositioning, skin inspection and checking support surfaces. Participants reported that the bundle enhanced the care they delivered and offered suggestions for future improvements. Our findings have highlighted a number of feasibility issues surrounding recruitment and retention, collecting data and implementation fidelity. A pressure ulcer prevention bundle specifically designed for nursing homes was acceptable. The feasibility work has highlighted the potential for the intervention and the areas that require development and refinement.

Pressure ulcer risk assessment and preventive measures in mobile / chairfast / bedfast hospital patients Abstract. Background: Internationally, it is recommended to use the clinical view with a validated instrument for pressure ulcer risk assessment to determine subsequent measures. We could not identify any study investigating risk assessment and subsequent measures for mobile / chairfast / bedfast patients. Aim of the study: To identify the degree of agreement between the Bradenscale and clinical view regarding pressure ulcer risk in mobile / chairfast / bedfast patients and subsequent preventive measures. Method: Data from 5274 hospital patients from the "Nursing quality measurement 2015", a cross-sectional multicenter study, were collected. Results: Out of all mobile, chairfast or bedfast patients assessed as at risk of pressure ulcer with the Bradenscale, 22.3 % (mobile), 61.7 % (chairfast) and 86.1 % (bedfast) were also assessed as at risk by clinical view. More than 3 / 4 of the chairfast patients that were not at risk according to clinical view received preventive measures. Conclusion: The consequences over time for patients that received no measures due to discrepancies in the risk assessments should be focused. Furthermore the evaluation of measures in patients without a risk of pressure ulcer is of critical importance. The aspect of patient mobility deserves special attention due to the low agreement of the risk assessments in chairfast and mobile patients.

Patients' Perceptions of a Pressure Ulcer Prevention Care Bundle in Hospital: A Qualitative Descriptive Study to Guide Evidence-Based Practice

BACKGROUND

Pressure ulcers place a significant burden on patients and hospitals. Our team developed and tested a pressure ulcer prevention care bundle (PUPCB) in a cluster randomized trial. As part of the process evaluation conducted alongside the trial, we explored patients' perceptions of the intervention.

AIMS

To identify patients' perceptions and experiences of a PUPCB in hospital.

METHODS

This qualitative descriptive study explored the perceptions of a subset of patients who participated in a trial testing the PUPCB across four intervention hospitals. A trained interviewer conducted semistructured interviews, which were digitally recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using thematic analysis.

FINDINGS

Nineteen patients were interviewed across the four hospitals. Three main themes emerged: (a) importance of personal contact in PUPCB delivery; (b) understanding pressure ulcer prevention (PUP) enhances participation; and (c) individual factors impact patients' engagement in PUP.

DISCUSSION

The extent to which patients adopted the intervention appeared to be influenced by the complexity of education materials, compatibility with patients' existing knowledge and beliefs, and perceived advantage of the intervention; ability for human interaction; and patient-related facilitators and barriers to participating in PUP care.

LINKING EVIDENCE TO ACTION

This study found patients accepted a PUPCB that encouraged participation in care, particularly as it involved personal and positive interactions with nurses and provision of information that was easy to understand and resonated with patients.
