Enzyme-catalyzed biodegradation of penicillin fermentation residues by β-lactamase OtLac from Ochrobactrum tritici

Development of calcium phosphate-chitosan composites with improved removal capacity toward tetracycline antibiotic: Adsorption and electrokinetic properties

Two eco-friendly and highly efficient adsorbents, namely brushite-chitosan (DCPD-CS), and monetite-chitosan (DCPA-CS) composites were synthesized via a simple and low-cost method and used for tetracycline (TTC) removal. The removal behavior of TTC onto the composite particles was studied considering various parameters, including contact time, pollutant concentration, and pH. The maximum TTC adsorption capacity was 138.56 and 112.48 mg/g for the DCPD-CS and DCPA-CS, respectively. Increasing the pH to 11 significantly enhanced the adsorption capacity to 223.84 mg/g for DCPD-CS and 205.92 mg/g for DCPA-CS. The antibiotic adsorption process was well-fitted by the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models. Electrostatic attractions, complexation, and hydrogen bonding are the main mechanisms governing the TTC removal process. Desorption tests demonstrated that the (NH4)2HPO4 solution was the most effective desorbing agent. The developed composites were more efficient than DCPD and DCPA reference samples and could be used as valuable adsorbents of TTC from contaminated wastewater.

Isolation of Sphingomonas sp. AJ-1 and its enantioselective S-methylation of the triazole fungicide prothioconazole

Prothioconazole is a widely used chiral triazole fungicide, and its residue pollution has attracted wide attention in recent years. However, little is known about microbial metabolic processes of prothioconazole enantiomers. In this study, a prothioconazole-degrading strain, Sphingomonas sp. AJ-1, was isolated from activated sludge. The optimal temperature and pH for prothioconazole degradation by strain AJ-1 were 30 °C and 6.0, respectively, and the degradation rate of prothioconazole by strain AJ-1 was negatively correlated with the initial concentration. When supplemented with additional carbon source, the degradation rates of 10 mg/L (Rac)-/(S)-/(R)-prothioconazole by strain AJ-1 were 76.0 %, 100.0 % and 64.8 % within 6 d, respectively. The CS bond of prothioconazole was methylated to produce (S)-/(R)-prothioconazole-S-methyl by strain AJ-1, but the degradation rate of prothioconazole by strain AJ-1 with (S)-enantiomer was 2.54-fold of that with (R)-enantiomer. Moreover, the toxicity of (Rac)-prothioconazole-S-methyl was 5.57 times lower than that of (Rac)-prothioconazole to Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata. The results showed that strain AJ-1 had obvious enantioselective metabolism for prothioconazole, and this metabolism was a detoxification process. This study provides new insights into the enantioselective metabolism of the chiral fungicide prothioconazole in microorganisms.

Assessment of the efficiency of synergistic photocatalysis on penicillin G biodegradation by whole cell Paracoccus sp

Background

The Paracoccus sp. strain isolated from sludge was identified and evaluated for catalytic activity in the degradation of penicillin G.

Results

High degradation efficiency and synergistic catalytic effects of the whole cell and visible light without additional catalysts were observed. The key factors influencing the degradation and kinetics of penicillin G were investigated. The results showed the phenylacetic acid, which was produced during penicillin G biodegradation, exhibited stronger inhibiting effects on KDSPL-02. However, this effect was reduced by visible light irradiation without any additional photocatalyst; furthermore, the rate of penicillin G biodegradation was accelerated, reaching a 100% rate in 12 h at a penicillin G concentration of 1.2 g/L. Four key intermediates produced during penicillin G degradation were isolated and identified by LC–MS, ¹H NMR, and ¹³C NMR. Enzymes involved in the PAA pathway were proposed from a genomic analysis of KDSPL-02.

Conclusions

These results provide a new method for bio-degrading of penicillin or other antibiotic pollutants using photoaccelerating biocatalysts with greater efficiency and more environmentally friendly conditions.
