Research progress on measurement methods and clinical applications of corneal elastic modulus

Various corneal diseases are strongly associated with corneal biomechanical characteristics, and early measurement of patients' corneal biomechanics can be utilized in their diagnosis and treatment. Measurement methods for corneal biomechanical characteristics are classified into ex vivo and in vivo. Some of these methods can directly measure certain corneal biomechanical parameters, while others require indirect calculation through alternative methods. However, due to diversities in measurement techniques and environmental conditions, significant differences may exist in the corneal mechanical properties measured by these two methods. Therefore, comprehensive research on current measurement methods and the exploration of novel measurement techniques may have great clinical significance. The corneal elastic modulus, a critical indicator in corneal biomechanics, reflects the cornea's ability to return to its initial shape after undergoing stress. This review aims to provide a comprehensive summary of the corneal elastic modulus, which is a critical biomechanical parameter, and discuss its direct, indirect, and potential measurement methods and clinical applications.

Refractive Surgery in Myopic Children

In this paper, we summarize the current knowledge on refractive surgery performed in the myopic pediatric population. We describe the main concerns about refractive surgery in myopic children and the indications for refractive surgery in this age group. We present a range of surgical procedures that are being used for the management of unilateral/bilateral myopia in children: corneal refractive surgery (PRK, LASEK, LASIK, FS-LASIK and SMILE) and intraocular refractive surgery (phakic intraocular lens implantation, refractive lens exchange or clear lens extraction), with both their advantages and drawbacks. We also describe the various complications and measures to prevent them.

Ex vivo, in vivo and in silico studies of corneal biomechanics: a systematic review

Healthy cornea guarantees the refractive power of the eye and the protection of the inner components, but injury, trauma or pathology may impair the tissue shape and/or structural organization and therefore its material properties, compromising its functionality in the ocular visual process. It turns out that biomechanical research assumes an essential role in analysing the morphology and biomechanical response of the cornea, preventing pathology occurrence, and improving/optimising treatments. In this review, ex vivo, in vivo and in silico methods for the corneal mechanical characterization are reported. Experimental techniques are distinct in testing mode (e.g., tensile, inflation tests), samples' species (human or animal), shape and condition (e.g., healthy, treated), preservation methods, setup and test protocol (e.g., preconditioning, strain rate). The meaningful results reported in the pertinent literature are discussed, analysing differences, key features and weaknesses of the methodologies adopted. In addition, numerical techniques based on the finite element method are reported, incorporating the essential steps for the development of corneal models, such as geometry, material characterization and boundary conditions, and their application in the research field to extend the experimental results by including further relevant aspects and in the clinical field for diagnostic procedure, treatment and planning surgery. This review aims to analyse the state-of-art of the bioengineering techniques developed over the years to study the corneal biomechanics, highlighting their potentiality to improve diagnosis, treatment and healing process of the corneal tissue, and, at the same, pointing out the current limits in the experimental equipment and numerical tools that are not able to fully characterize in vivo corneal tissues non-invasively and discourage the use of finite element models in daily clinical practice for surgical planning.

[Characterization of rabbit corneal biomechanical properties after corneal refractive surgery based on rapid loading-unloading uniaxial tensile test]

In order to understand how the biomechanical properties of rabbit cornea change over time after corneal ablation, 21 healthy adult rabbits were used in this study, with the left eye as experimental side and the right eye as the control side. Firstly, a lamellar knife was used to remove a portion of the anterior corneal surface tissue (30%~50% of the original corneal thickness) from the left eye of each rabbit, as an animal model simulating corneal refractive surgery. Secondly, postoperative experimental rabbits were kept for one, three, or six months until being euthanized. Strip specimens were produced using their corneas in vitro to perform a uniaxial tensile test with an average loading-unloading rate of approximately 0.16 mm/s. Finally, the visco-hyperelastic material constitutive model was used to fit the data. The results showed that there was a significant difference in the viscoelastic parameters of the corneas between the experimental and the control eyes at the first and third postoperative months. There was a difference in tangential modulus between the experimental and the control eyes at strain levels of 0.02 and 0.05 at the third postoperative month. There was no significant difference in biomechanical parameters between the experimental and the control eyes at the sixth postoperative month. These results indicate that compared with the control eyes, the biomechanical properties of the experimental eyes vary over postoperative time. At the third postoperative month, the ratio of corneal tangential modulus between the experimental and the control eyes significantly increased, and then decreased. This work lays a preliminary foundation for understanding the biomechanical properties of the cornea after corneal refractive surgery based on rapid testing data obtained clinically.

[Effects of SMILE with different residual stromal thicknesses on corneal biomechanical properties of rabbits in vivo]

Femtosecond laser small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) with different residual stromal thicknesses (RST) is set to investigate its effect on corneal biomechanical properties of rabbits in vivo. In this study, 24 healthy adult Japanese rabbits were randomly divided into group A and B. The RST of group A was set 30% of the corneal central thickness (CCT), and the RST of group B was 50% of the CCT. The thickness of the corneal cap in both groups was set one third of CCT. Corneal visualization Scheimpflug technology (Corvis ST) and Pentacam three-dimensional anterior segment analyzer were used to determine corneal biomechanical and morphological parameters before surgery, and 1 week, 1 month and 3 months after surgery. Pearson correlation analysis was used to analyze factors affecting corneal biomechanical parameters after SMILE. The results showed that the corneal stiffness of group A was significantly higher than that of group B at 1 week and 1 month after surgery, and most biomechanical parameters returned to preoperative levels at 3 months postoperatively. The results of correlation analysis showed that postoperative CCT and RST were the main factors affecting corneal biomechanical parameters after SMILE. There was no significant difference in corneal posterior surface height (PE) between 3 months after surgery and before surgery in both two groups. It indicates that although the ability to resist deformation of cornea decreases in SMILE with thicker corneal cap and less RST, there is no tendency to keratoconus, which may be related to the preservation of more anterior stromal layer.

Five-year stability of posterior corneal surface after small incision lenticule extraction for high myopia

Background

To study the 5-year changes in the posterior corneal surface after small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) for high myopia.

Methods

Eighty eyes received SMILE was included in this prospective study. They were allocated into two groups based on the spherical equivalent: high myopia (40eyes, -7.49 ± 0.70D) and moderate myopia (40eyes, -4.43 ± 0.87D). Certain points of posterior corneal elevation (the central point (PCE), thinnest point (PTE), maximal point (PME), and in various corneal areas) were evaluated using a Scheimpflug camera (Pentacam; Oculus GmbH, Germany) preoperatively and at 6 months and 5 years after surgery.

Results

All surgeries were completed uneventfully and no ectasia was developed throng the observation. The safety index and efficacy index were 1.14 and 1.03 in the high myopia group, and 1.16 and 1.06 in the moderate myopia group, respectively. Most of the calculated values in the high myopia group showed a slight increase at 6 months but decreased at 5 years. At 5 years postoperatively, the value of the PTE was significantly lower than at baseline in both groups (P ≤ 0.047); a statistical difference was also revealed in the PME in the moderate group with slight changes (10.15 ± 3.01 μm vs. 11.60 ± 4.33 μm, P = 0.002); no statistical significance was observed in other calculated values (P ≥ 0.067). Similarly, no significant linear correlation was noted between changes in all values and the residual bed thickness either (P ≥ 0.057).

Conclusions

SMILE causes no protrusion in posterior corneal surface for correction of high myopia at the follow-up visit of 5 years.

Agreement Between Predicted and Actual Measured Ablation Depth After FS-LASIK Using Different Rotating Scheimpflug Cameras and OCT

Purpose

To compare the predicted ablation depth (AD) with the postoperatively measured corneal ablation depth (postop-AD) at central, paracentral, and midperipheral locations using two rotating Scheimpflug analyzers and a Fourier-domain optical coherence tomographer in eyes that underwent femtosecond laser-assisted LASIK (FS-LASIK).

Methods

The values of corneal thickness were measured preoperatively and postoperatively at one and three months. The difference between preoperative and postoperative was defined as postop-AD. Measurements were performed at the corneal vertex and mid-peripheral area. The mid-peripheral corneal thickness was measured at the superior, inferior, nasal, and temporal locations at a distance of 1.0 or 2.5 mm from the corneal vertex. The predicted AD was calculated by ORK-CAM software (Schwind eye tech-solutions GmbH, Kleinostheim, Germany), and the difference between the predicted AD and postop-AD was defined as Δ-AD. Paired t-test analysis was employed to evaluate the differences, agreement was assessed by the Bland-Altman method.

Results

Forty-two eyes of 42 patients were investigated. At one month, the predicted AD in the central and paracentral areas was underestimated by the Pentacam HR (Oculus, Wetzlar, Germany), Sirius (Costruzione Strumenti Oftalmici, Florence, Italy) and RTVue OCT (Optovue Inc., Freemont, CA, United States), whereas Δ-AD was negative as established by all devices and predominantly statistically significant. The Δ-AD values approximated zero at three months. The mean difference of Δ-AD at three months at the corneal vertex was 0.67 ± 9.39 mm, −7.92 ± 9.05 mm and −1.36 ± 8.31 mm, respectively. The mid-peripheral measurements had positive values at one month and even more highly positive at three months (with statistically significant differences in most of the cases). The agreement between the predicted and postop-AD was moderate with all devices, but slightly better with RTVue.

Conclusion

The predicted AD seems to be underestimated in the central and paracentral corneal area and overestimated in the mid-periphery.

Translational Relevance

The study could help to partly explain and prevent the refractive errors after FS-LASIK.

Predictive factors of posterior corneal shift after small incision lenticule extraction: a 5-year follow-up study

PURPOSE

The aim of this study was to determine risk factors affecting changes in posterior corneal elevation (PCE) and predict the 5-year stability after small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE).

METHODS

This retrospective, longitudinal study enrolled 161 patients post-SMILE. The PCE values were measured at the apex, thinnest, maximal and 24 other prespecified preoperative points and at 6 months, 1 year and 5 years postoperatively.

RESULTS

Posterior corneas exhibited time-dependent, region-dependent and angle-dependent changes. For every dioptre increase in the absolute preoperative spherical equivalent (SE), 10-μm decrease in the central corneal thickness (CCT), 10-μm increase in the maximum lenticule thickness (MLT), 10-μm decrease in the residual bed thickness (RBT), 10% increase in the percentage ablation depth (PAD, MLT divided by CCT) and 10% decrease in the percentage stromal bed thickness (PSBT, RBT divided by CCT), PCE exhibited average forward displacements of 0.2-0.4, 0.2-0.7, 0.1-0.2, 0.1-0.3, 0.6-1.0 and 0.5-1.1 μm, respectively (p < 0.05). PSBT was the variable with the highest accuracy in predicting 5-year stability of posterior corneas (area under curve = 0.75). The cut-off values of SE, CCT, MLT, RBT, PAD and PSBT for increased PCE were -8.00 to -8.31 D, 481.0-498.5 μm, 139.5-144.5 μm, 255.5-263.5 μm, 26.9-28.3% and 48.9-52.6%, respectively.

CONCLUSION

Eyes with thinner corneas, higher myopia requiring greater MLT and lower RBT exhibited greater predispositions towards posterior protrusion. The thresholds for preventing forward posterior corneal displacement were 26.9-28.3% for PAD and 48.9-52.6% for PSBT. Prediction of posterior corneal stability is useful for assessing surgical risks post-SMILE.

Determine Corneal Biomechanical Parameters by Finite Element Simulation and Parametric Analysis Based on ORA Measurements

Purpose: The Ocular Response Analyzer (ORA) is one of the most commonly used devices to measure corneal biomechanics in vivo. Until now, the relationship between the output parameters and corneal typical biomechanical parameters was not clear. Hence, we defined the output parameters of ORA as ORA output parameters. This study aims to propose a method to determine corneal biomechanical parameters based on ORA measurements by finite element simulation and parametric analysis.

Methods: Finite element analysis was used to simulate the mechanics process of ORA measurements with different intraocular pressure (IOP), corneal geometrical parameters and corneal biomechanical parameters. A simplified geometrical optics model was built to simulate the optical process of the measurements to extract ORA output parameters. After that, 70% of the simulated data was used to establish the quantitative relationship between corneal biomechanical parameters and ORA output parameters by parametric analysis and 30% of the simulated data was used to validate the established model. Besides, ten normal subjects were included to evaluate the normal range of corneal biomechanical parameters calculated from ORA.

Results: The quantitative relationship between corneal biomechanical parameters and ORA output parameters is established by combining parametric analysis with finite element simulation. The elastic modulus (E) and relaxation limit (G_∞) of the ten normal subjects were 0.65 ± 0.07 MPa and 0.26 ± 0.15, respectively.

Conclusions: A method was proposed to determine corneal biomechanical parameters based on the results of ORA measurements. The magnitude of the corneal biomechanical parameters calculated according to our method was reasonable.

Time-varying regularity of changes in biomechanical properties of the corneas after removal of anterior corneal tissue

Background

The corneal biomechanical properties with the prolongation of time after corneal refractive surgery are important for providing a mechanical basis for the occurrence of clinical phenomena such as iatrogenic keratectasia and refractive regression. The aim of this study was to explore the changes of corneal elastic modulus, and stress relaxation properties from the 6-month follow-up observations of rabbits after a removal of anterior corneal tissue in simulation to corneal refractive surgery.

Methods

The anterior corneal tissue, 6 mm in diameter and 30–50% of the original corneal thickness, the left eye of the rabbit was removed, and the right eye was kept as the control. The rabbits were normally raised and nursed for 6 months, during which corneal morphology data, and both of corneal hysteresis (CH) and corneal resistance factor (CRF) were gathered. Uniaxial tensile tests of corneal strips were performed at months 1, 3, and 6 from 7 animals, and corneal collagen fibrils were observed at months 1, 3, and 6 from 1 rabbit, respectively.

Results

Compared with the control group, there were statistical differences in the curvature radius at week 2 and month 3, and both CH and CRF at months 1, 2, and 6 in experiment group; there were statistical differences in elastic modulus at 1, 3, and month 6, and stress relaxation degree at month 3 in experiment group. The differences in corneal elastic modulus, stress relaxation degree and the total number of collagen fibrils between experiment and control groups varied gradually with time, and showed significant changes at the 3rd month after the treatment.

Conclusions

Corneas after a removal of anterior corneal tissue undergo dynamic changes in corneal morphology and biomechanical properties. The first 3 months after treatment could be a critical period. The variation of corneal biomechanical properties is worth considering in predicting corneal deformation after a removal of anterior corneal tissue.

A Novel Indentation Assessment to Measure Corneal Biomechanical Properties in Glaucoma and Ocular Hypertension

Purpose

To evaluate the ability of the new in vivo corneal indentation device (CID) to measure corneal biomechanical properties.

Methods and Results

In total, 186 eyes from 46 healthy subjects, 107 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma, and 33 patients with ocular hypertension were enrolled in a cross-sectional study. Measurements were performed using corneal visualization Scheimpflug technology (Corvis ST) and the CID. The deformation amplitude (DA), inward applanation time, inward applanation velocity (A1V), outward applanation time (A2T), outward applanation velocity (A2V), highest concavity time, DA ratio, max inverse radius (MIR), integrated radius, and stiffness parameter A1 were included as Corvis ST parameters, and stiffness and modulus were included as CID parameters. Associations between the Corvis ST and CID parameters and correlations between central corneal thickness and corneal biomechanical parameters were analyzed. The stiffness was significantly correlated with all the Corvis ST parameters (P < 0.05). The modulus was significantly correlated with the DA, A1V, A2T, A2V, highest concavity time, and MIR (P < 0.05). The DA, inward applanation time, A1V, A2T, A2V, DA ratio, MIR, integrated radius, and stiffness parameter A1 values and both CID-derived values were significantly correlated with central corneal thickness (P < 0.05).

Conclusions

Parameters derived from the CID and Corvis ST demonstrated agreement in the measurement of corneal biomechanical properties. The stiffness and modulus can characterize in vivo corneal biomechanical properties.

Translational Relevance

Agreeing with the Corvis ST regarding the assessment of corneal biomechanical properties, the CID can be a novel clinical tool for biomechanical evaluation of the cornea.

Effective elastic modulus of an intact cornea related to indentation behavior: A comparison between the Hertz model and Johnson-Kendall-Roberts model

In this study, a macro-indentation test on the submillimeter scale was performed to analyze the indentation behavior of an intact cornea under physiological pressures. The Hertz and Johnson-Kendall-Roberts (JKR) models were employed to solve the elastic modulus (E) of the intact cornea. The relevant detailed analysis showed that the JKR model, which accounted for the contribution from the adhesion energy, could be used to obtain the E values that were more than two-folds of those obtained from the Hertz model, which only considered the external force. Compared with the uniaxial tension test in vitro, unlike the elastic Hertz-model, the E values under physiological pressures that were obtained with the JKR model were between the lower and upper limits of corneal material. This phenomenon indicated that the JKR model could be used to obtain reasonably effective E values of an intact cornea under physiological pressures.

[Finite element analysis of determining corneal biomechanical properties in vivo based on Corvis ST]

The decrease of corneal stiffness is the key factor leading to keratoconus, and the corneal collagen fiber stiffness and fiber dispersion are closely related to the corneal biomechanical properties. In this paper, a finite element model of human cornea based on corneal microstructure, namely collagen fiber, was established before and after laser assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). By simulating the Corvis ST process and comparing with the actual clinical results, the hyperelastic constitutive parameters and corneal collagen fiber stiffness modulus of the corneal material were determined before and after refractive surgery. After LASIK, the corneal collagen fiber stiffness modulus increased significantly, and was highly correlated with central corneal thickness (CCT). The predictive relationship between the corneal collagen fiber stiffness modulus and the corresponding CCT before and after surgery was: k 1 before = exp(9.14 - 0.009CCT before), k 1 after = exp(8.82 - 0.008CCT after). According to the results of this study, the central corneal thickness of the patient can be used to estimate the preoperative and postoperative collagen fiber stiffness modulus, and then a personalized corneal model that is more consistent with the actual situation of the patient can be established, providing a theoretical reference for more accurately predicting the safe surgical cutting amount of the cornea.

Comparison of intraocular pressure measured by ocular response analyzer and Goldmann applanation tonometer after corneal refractive surgery: a systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Accurate measurement of intraocular pressure (IOP) after corneal refractive surgery is of great significance to clinic, and comparisons among various IOP measuring instruments are not rare, but there is a lack of unified analysis. Although Goldmann Applanation Tonometer (GAT) is currently the internationally recognized gold standard for IOP measurement, its results are severely affected by central corneal thickness (CCT). Ocular Response Analyzer (ORA) takes certain biomechanical properties of cornea into account and is supposed to be less dependent of CCT. In this study, we conducted the meta-analysis to systematically assess the differences and similarities of IOP values measured by ORA and GAT in patients after corneal refractive surgery from the perspective of evidence-based medicine.

METHODS

The authors searched electronic databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of science, Cochrane library and Chinese electronic databases of CNKI and Wanfang) from Jan. 2005 to Jan. 2019, studies describing IOP comparisons measured by GAT and ORA after corneal refractive surgery were included. Quality assessment, subgroup analysis, meta-regression analysis and publication bias analysis were applied in succession.

RESULTS

Among the 273 literatures initially retrieved, 8 literatures (13 groups of data) with a total of 724 eyes were included in the meta-analysis, and all of which were English literatures. In the pooled analysis, the weighted mean difference (WMD) between IOPcc and IOP_GAT was 2.67 mmHg (95% CI: 2.20~3.14 mmHg, p < 0.0001), the WMD between IOPg and IOP_GAT was - 0.27 mmHg (95% CI: - 0.70~0.16 mmHg, p = 0.2174). In the subgroup analysis of postoperative IOPcc and IOP_GAT, the heterogeneity among the data on surgical procedure was zero, while the heterogeneity of other subgroups was still more than 50%. The comparison of the mean difference of pre- and post-operative IOP (∆IOP) was: mean-∆IOPg > mean-∆IOP_GAT > mean-∆IOPcc.

CONCLUSIONS

IOPcc, which is less dependent on CCT, may be more close to the true IOP after corneal refractive surgery compared with IOPg and IOP_GAT, and the recovery of IOPcc after corneal surface refractive surgery may be more stable than that after lamellar refractive surgery.

The Mechanical Interpretation of Ocular Response Analyzer Parameters

Purpose

Ocular Response Analyzer (ORA) is one of the most widely used devices in clinic, while the mechanical interpretations of parameters obtained from ORA have not been understood completely. The aim of this research is to explore the mechanical interpretation of ORA parameters.

Methods

Rabbits aged 3-24 months were measured with ORA in vivo and corneal strips uniaxial tensile tests to get ORA parameters and corneal biomechanical parameters (corneal elastic modulus, relaxation time, and relaxation limit). The mechanical interpretation of ORA parameters was cognized preliminarily by analyzing the correlation between ORA parameters and corneal biomechanical parameters. On the other hand, finite element method was applied to simulate ORA measurements with different corneal biomechanical parameters to obtain quantitative relationship between ORA parameters and corneal biomechanical parameters further.

Results

Biomechanical experimental results showed that Corneal Resistance Factor (CRF) was correlated with corneal elastic modulus and relaxation limit significantly, while the significant correlations between Corneal Hysteresis (CH) and corneal biomechanical parameters were not observed. Results of finite element analysis showed that both CH and CRF were correlated with corneal elastic modulus, relaxation limit, and relaxation time significantly. Besides, corneal elastic modulus was positively correlated with upslop1 and upslop2 and negatively correlated with w2.

Conclusions

For all ORA parameters, CH, CRF, the upslope, and the width of the peaks are parameters which may reflect corneal elastic properties. It is viable to cognize mechanical interpretation of ORA parameters by the comparisons of the data from ORA and biomechanical tests of rabbits with different ages and the simulations of ORA based on finite element methods. Further studies are needed to confirm the mechanical interpretation.

Preliminary Investigation of the Mechanical Anisotropy of the Normal Human Corneal Stroma

Purpose

To investigate the anisotropic characteristics of the normal human corneal stroma using fresh corneal tissue.

Methods

Sixty-four corneal specimens extracted from stromal lenticules were included in this study. The specimens were cut in the temporal-nasal (horizontal) or superior-inferior (vertical) direction. Strip specimens were subjected to uniaxial tensile testing. The tensile properties of the specimens were measured and compared in the two directions.

Results

The low-strain tangent modulus was statistically significantly greater in the vertical direction than in the horizontal direction (1.32 ± 0.50 MPa vs 1.17 ± 0.43 MPa; P=0.035), as was the high-strain tangent modulus (51.26 ± 8.23 MPa vs 43.59 ± 7.96 MPa; P ≤ 0.001). The elastic modulus in the vertical direction was also higher than that in horizontal direction at stresses of 0.01, 0.02, and 0.03 MPa, but not statistically significant; so, P=0.338, 0.373, and 0.417, respectively.

Conclusions

The biomechanical behavior in normal human corneal stroma tissue is slightly stiffer in the vertical direction than in the horizontal direction. This information may aid our understanding of the biomechanical properties of the cornea and related diseases.

Corneal Biomechanical Properties after FS-LASIK with Residual Bed Thickness Less Than 50% of the Original Corneal Thickness

Background

The changes in corneal biomechanical properties after LASIK remain an unknown but important topic for surgical design and prognostic evaluation. This study aims to observe the postoperative corneal biomechanical properties one month after LASIK with amount of corneal cutting (ACC) greater than 50% of the central corneal thickness (CCT).

Methods

FS-LASIK was performed in 10 left rabbit eyes with ACC being 60% (L60) and 65% (L65) of the CCT, while the right eyes (R) were the control. After 4 weeks, rabbits were executed and corneal strip samples were prepared for uniaxial tensile tests.

Results

At the same strain, the stresses of L65 and L60 were larger than those of R. The elastic moduli of L60 and L65 were larger than those of R when the stress was 0.02 MPa, while they began to be less than those of R when stress exceeds the low-stress region. After 10 s relaxation, the stress of specimens L65, L60, and R increased in turn.

Conclusion

The elastic moduli of the cornea after FS-LASIK with ACC greater than 50% of the CCT do not become less under normal rabbit IOP. The limit stress grows with the rise of ACC when relaxation becomes stable.

Age-Related Variations of Rabbit Corneal Geometrical and Clinical Biomechanical Parameters

Purpose

To study the variations in corneal clinical biomechanical parameters (CCBP) and corneal geometrical parameters of rabbit in relation to age.

Methods

Rabbits aged 3, 7, 12, 18, and 24 months were enrolled. Each eye of the rabbits was tested with Ocular Response Analyzer (ORA), Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), and Pachymeter to obtain the intraocular pressure (IOP): Goldmann-correlated IOP (IOPg) and Corneal Compensated Intraocular Pressure (IOPcc); CCBP: Corneal Hysteresis (CH) and Corneal Resistance Factor (CRF); corneal geometric parameters: corneal curvature radius (CCR) and central corneal thickness (CCT).

Results

The IOP of the rabbits changes slightly from 3 to 7 months of age, while it significantly decreases from 7 to 18 months of age and increases from 18 to 24 months of age; CH and CRF decrease with the increase of age; CCT increases from 7 to 18 months and decreases from 3 to 7 months of age and from 18 to 24 months of age; CCR presents an upward trend from 3 to 18 months and a significant decrease between 18 and 24 months of age.

Conclusion

CH and CRF are negatively correlated with age. CCT and CCR are positively correlated with age.
