Abstract
The immature immune system at birth and environmental stress increase the risk of infection in nursing pigs. Severe infection subsequently induces intestinal and respiratory diseases and even cause death of pigs. The nutritional and physiological conditions of sows directly affect the growth, development and disease resistance of the fetus and newborn. Many studies have shown that providing sows with nutrients such as functional oligosaccharides, oils, antioxidants, and trace elements could regulate immunity and the inflammatory response of piglets. Here, we reviewed the positive effects of certain nutrients on milk quality, immunoglobulin inflammatory response, oxidative stress, and intestinal microflora of sows, and further discuss the effects of these nutrients on immunity and the inflammatory response in the offspring.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of the present study was to analyze the possible changes caused by the maternal ingestion of different types of fatty acids during pregnancy in the proinflammatory state in the odontogenesis of the fetuses. SUBJECT AND METHODS Twenty-four jaws (n = 6 per group) of Wistar rats were collected on the 20th day of intrauterine life. Mothers were separated on the first day of pregnancy into 4 groups according to diet, as described below: control group (C) - diet with soy oil as a source of fat; saturated fatty acid group (S) - diet with lard in saturated fatty acids; trans-fatty acid group (T) - diet with vegetable fat, rich in trans-saturated fatty acids; and polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) group - diet with fish oil, rich in PUFAs. RESULTS Microscopic analysis showed no alterations in tissue development of the teeth between the groups with different lipid diets (T, S, and PUFA) when compared to the control group (C); immunohistochemical analysis for the expression of JAK2, STAT3, P-STAT3, SOCS3, and IL-6 showed no statistically significant difference (p > 0.05) compared to the control group. However, there were changes (p < 0.05) between the T group and the PUFA group in the expression of JAK2. CONCLUSION Thus, lipid consumption in the maternal diet remains a topic to be explored in embryonic development, despite not causing morphological changes to the tooth germ of rats.

Abstract
Various fats are used in swine diets as sources of energy and essential fatty acids. Our aim was to evaluate the effects of fat supplementation during gestation on reproductive performance, milk composition of sows and intestinal development of their offspring. Fifty sows were randomly allocated into two groups receiving the control (CON) and high-fat diets (HF diet) during gestation. After farrowing, all sows received the same lactation diet and were fed ad libitum until weaning at day 20 of lactation. The results showed that being fed the HF diet did not markedly improve the performance of sows and their offspring. However, the HF diet increased (p < 0.05) the colostrum contents of protein and no-fat solids, and the plasma concentration of prolactin at farrowing. Moreover, piglets born of sows fed the HF diet had higher (p < 0.05) jejunal villous height, as well as deeper (p < 0.05) jejunal and colonic crypt depths compared with piglets born of sows fed the CON diet. In addition, piglets born of sows fed the HF diet had markedly increased (p < 0.05) mRNA abundances of innate immunity-related genes on toll-like receptor 4 (TLR-4), toll-like receptor 9 (TLR-9) and myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88) in ileum compared with piglets born of sows fed the CON diet. These findings indicated that dietary fat supplementation during gestation did not markedly improve the performance of sows and their offspring, but improved colostrum quality and concentration of prolactin on the day of farrowing, associated with modifications of intestinal morphology and innate immunity of their offspring.

Abstract
It has been clearly demonstrated that the maternal nutritional status during pregnancy and lactation has long-term effects on offspring health. In mammals, milk represents the first maternal support provided to the newborns so that its composition may play a major role in long-term programming. We therefore assessed the effects of maternal high-fat/high-sugar obesogenic (OD) or control (CD) diets on offspring growth and adiposity in the rabbit. Between 7 and 20 wk of age, the BW gain of OD milk-fed rabbits was higher than that of CD milk-fed rabbits ( < 0.05). Body fat mass measurements at 21 wk of age revealed a significant increase in body adiposity as a function of milk ingested during the neonatal period, in both female and male offspring ( < 0.05). A marked weight gain difference was observed according to the milk in both female and male offspring. Moreover, we investigated the composition in major proteins and leptin levels in milk from OD or CD diet-fed dams. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of individual CD skimmed milk samples enabled identification and quantification of the rabbit main milk proteins and of their main phosphorylated isoforms at 2 different stages of lactation (3 and 10 d). Here we show that the OD diet induced a reduction in the whey acidic protein content concomitantly with both an increase in serum albumin and lactoferrin contents and in the phosphorylated isoforms of the main milk proteins. Furthermore, a sharp rise in leptin levels was observed in the milk of OD diet-fed dams on Day 10 of lactation when compared with CD diet animals ( < 0.05). Taken together, these findings provide evidence that lactation is a critical window of development during which exposure to a deleterious diet is highly detrimental to long-term outcomes. Moreover, these insights suggest that it may be possible to prevent at least some of the adverse effects of inadequate maternal nutrition on the long-term metabolic outcomes of the offspring through nutritional interventions applied during the lactation period.
