Abstract
We present an adult patient with schizophrenia who was later found to have hyperhomocysteinemia, a condition that increases the risk of several diseases, due to a deficiency in folic acid. Although folic acid supplementation quickly normalized the hyperhomocysteinemia and folic acid levels, it did not significantly improve the overall mental and cognitive health. Genotype analysis was performed and the patient was found to have two pathogenic variants in the MTRR gene, 66GG and 524TT, which encodes for methionine synthase reductase (MSR), an enzyme crucial for homocysteine metabolism. The results can shed light on the reasons behind the patient's hyperhomocysteinemia and folic acid deficiency. Hyperhomocysteinemia confers an increased risk of several diseases. Indeed, the patient has neurodevelopment and cardiovascular health problems for decades. Given the rarity of the condition and the nonspecific nature of the symptoms, the detection of hyperhomocysteinemia or MSR deficiency can often be delayed or overlooked. Considering the potential irreversible and detrimental consequences of prolonged hyperhomocysteinemia and folic acid deficiency that our patient is likely experiencing, we suggest that clinicians be vigilant for associated signs when they encounter adolescents exhibiting psychotic symptoms, especially those with additional physical symptoms and a history of resistance to treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Increasing evidence suggests an association between maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index (pre-BMI) and adverse pregnancy outcomes. However, the effects of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) polymorphisms on these relationships require further investigation. This study aimed to investigate whether the relationship between pre-BMI and the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes was influenced by MTHFR gene polymorphisms. METHODS A total of 5614 mother-fetus pairs were included in the study. The odds ratios (OR) of adverse pregnancy complications, including gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), gestational hypertension (GHT), cesarean delivery (CS), and premature rupture of membranes (PROM), were estimated using adjusted logistic regression models and subgroup analysis. RESULTS Pregnant women with higher pre-BMI values were positively related to the risk of GDM, GHT, and CS. In the subgroup analysis, underweight BMI was associated with a decreased risk of CS and GDM in pregnant women with the MTHFR A1298C AA or C677T CC genotype, while overweight/obese BMI was associated with an increased risk of GDM and CS in different MTHFR variants. Moreover, pregnant women with MTHFR A1298C AC + CC or C667T CC were found to have an increased risk of GHT in the MTHFR A1298C AA or C667T CT + TT genotype. A remarkable association was observed between the obesity group with MTHFR A1298C AC + CC (OR = 6.49, CI: 2.67-15.79) and the overweight group with the C667T CC genotype (OR = 4.72, CI: 2.13-10.45). CONCLUSIONS MTHFR gene polymorphisms exert a modifying effect on the association between maternal pre-BMI and the risk of GHT, CS, and GDM. Pregnant women with a high pre-BMI with specific MTHFR genotypes should be considered for GHT development.

Abstract
Hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) is an autosomal recessive inherited metabolic disease caused by variations in folate metabolism genes, characterized by impaired methionine metabolism and accumulation of homocysteine (Hcy) in the blood serum. It was shown that men usually have higher plasma Hcy levels than women, but have not yet assessed the leading factors of these differences, which is important for the development of personalized protocols for the prevention of folate metabolism disorders in couples with reproductive disorders. This study aimed to analyze the effect of intergenic and gene-factor interactions on the risk of developing HHcy in men and women of married couples with reproductive disorders. In our study were involved 206 married Caucasian couples (206 males and 206 females) from central regions of Ukraine with early pregnancy losses in the anamnesis. We found that the incidence of HHcy in men was significantly higher than in women. Gender differences in folic acid and vitamin B12 levels were identified. The best predictors of HHcy in men (MTRR (A66G), MTHFR (C677T), MTR (A2756G), vitamin B12 level) and in women (MTHFR (C677T), MTR (A2756G), vitamin B12 level) were selected by binary logistic regression. There was no significant difference in the distribution of genotypes by the studied gene variants when comparing men and women with HHcy. Our findings demonstrate that there is a gender difference in the development of HHcy. This difference is caused by intergenic interaction and by environmental factors, in particular, nutrition and vitamins consumption.

Abstract
Evidence suggests a potential relationship between gestational weight gain (GWG) and adverse birth outcomes. However, the role of maternal genetic polymorphisms remains unclear. This study was conducted to investigate whether the relationship of GWG with risk of adverse birth outcomes was modified by methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) polymorphisms. A total of 2,967 Chinese pregnant women were included and divided into insufficient, sufficient, and excessive groups based on the Institute of Medicine (IOM) criteria. Polymorphisms of C677T and A1298C in gene MTHFR were genotyped. Multivariable logistic regression models were introduced after controlling major confounders. Excessive GWG was found to increase the odds ratio (OR) for macrosomia [OR = 3.47, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.86–6.48] and large-for-gestational age (LGA, OR = 3.25, 95% CI: 2.23–4.74), and decreased the OR for small-for-gestational age (SGA, OR = 0.60, 95% CI: 0.45–0.79). Pregnant women with insufficient GWG had a higher frequency of SGA (OR = 1.68, 95% CI: 1.32–2.13) and a lower rate of LGA (OR = 0.51, 95% CI: 0.27–0.96). Interestingly, significant associations of GWG categories in relation to low birth weight (LBW), macrosomia, and SGA were only suggested among pregnant women with MTHFR A1298C AA genotype. Among pregnant women with insufficient GWG group, an increased risk of 3.96 (95% CI: 1.57–10.01) for LBW was observed among subjects with the A1298C AA genotype, compared to the AC+CC genotype group. GWG categories are closely related to LBW, macrosomia, SGA and LGA, and the associations were modified by the polymorphism of MTHFR A1298C.

Abstract
Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) polymorphism plays a fundamental role in susceptibility to various diseases, including cancers and autoimmune diseases. In the current study, we aimed to compare genotype and allele frequency variations of rs1801131, one of the most common variants found in the MTHFR gene, among Saudi smokers and non-smokers. We hypothesized that genetic variations of this gene are responsible for many diseases, particularly those caused by cigarette smoking (CS) such as pulmonary diseases, oral cancer and lung cancer. We performed a case-control study on a sample of 235 healthy smokers and 239 healthy non-smokers in Saudi Arabia. The rs1801131 SNP genotypes were determined using a genotyping assay and multiple in silico algorithmic software programs were used to identify the effects and structural functions of the rs1801131 (Glu429Ala) mutation. Using chi-squared tests, we found that, among smokers, TG and GG genotype carriers had 0.209-fold (OR = 0.209, P < 0.005) and 0.427-fold (OR = 0.427, P = 0.003) lower risks of CS-related disease compared to TT reference genotypes. In addition, this protective effect was observed in Saudi smokers independent of age, gender, types of smoking, duration, and average daily smoking consumption. Filling a research gap by exploring this topic in the Saudi population, the current findings indicate that genotype and allele distributions of MTHFR rs1801131 polymorphism present fundamental protective effects against the risk of CS-related disease. These findings should be verified in future studies with larger sample sizes, different ethnicities, and patients suffering from CS-related diseases, such as oral cancer and lung cancer.

Combination of Exercise and Vegetarian Diet: Relationship with High Density-Lipoprotein Cholesterol in Taiwanese Adults Based on MTHFR rs1801133 Polymorphism. Nutrients 2020; 12:nu12061564. Abstract
We examined the association between high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and exercise and vegetarian diets, in Taiwanese adults, based on the Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) rs1801133 polymorphism. Using regression models, we analyzed historical data collected from 9255 Taiwan Biobank (TWB) participants from 2008 through 2015. Exposure to exercise was associated with higher HDL-C (β = 1.0508 and 1.4011 for GG and GA + AA individuals, respectively), whereas a vegetarian diet was associated with lower HDL-C (β = −6.2793 and −4.6359 for those with GG and GA + AA genotype, respectively). We found an interaction between exercise and diet among GG individuals (p = 0.0101). Compared with no exercise/no vegetarian diet, vegetarian diet/no exercise was associated with a 5.1514 mg/dl reduction in HDL-C among those with GG genotype (β = −5.1514, p < 0.0001) and a 4.8426 mg/dl reduction (β = −4.8426, p < 0.0001) among those with GA + AA genotype. Vegetarian diets in combination with exercise predicted a 6.5552 mg/dl reduction in HDL-C among GG individuals (β = −6.5552) and a 2.8668 mg/dl reduction among GA + AA individuals (p < 0.05). These findings demonstrated that vegetarian diet alone was associated with lower HDL-C, no matter the rs1801133 genotype. However, the inclusion of regular exercise predicted much lower levels among GG individuals, whereas levels among GA + AA individuals were relatively higher.

Abstract
"Quantile-dependent expressivity" is a dependence of genetic effects on whether the phenotype (e.g., triglycerides) is high or low relative to its distribution in the population. Quantile-specific offspring-parent regression slopes (βOP) were estimated by quantile regression for 6227 offspring-parent pairs. Quantile-specific heritability (h2), estimated by 2βOP/(1 + rspouse), decreased 0.0047 ± 0.0007 (P = 2.9 × 10-14) for each one-percent decrement in fasting triglyceride concentrations, i.e., h2 ± SE were: 0.428 ± 0.059, 0.230 ± 0.030, 0.111 ± 0.015, 0.050 ± 0.016, and 0.033 ± 0.010 at the 90th, 75th, 50th, 25th, and 10th percentiles of the triglyceride distribution, respectively. Consistent with quantile-dependent expressivity, 11 drug studies report smaller genotype differences at lower (post-treatment) than higher (pre-treatment) triglyceride concentrations. This meant genotype-specific triglyceride changes could not move in parallel when triglycerides were decreased pharmacologically, so that subtracting pre-treatment from post-treatment triglyceride levels necessarily created a greater triglyceride decrease for the genotype with a higher pre-treatment value (purported precision-medicine genetic markers). In addition, sixty-five purported gene-environment interactions were found to be potentially attributable to triglyceride's quantile-dependent expressivity, including gene-adiposity (APOA5, APOB, APOE, GCKR, IRS-1, LPL, MTHFR, PCSK9, PNPLA3, PPARγ2), gene-exercise (APOA1, APOA2, LPL), gene-diet (APOA5, APOE, INSIG2, LPL, MYB, NXPH1, PER2, TNFA), gene-alcohol (ALDH2, APOA5, APOC3, CETP, LPL), gene-smoking (APOC3, CYBA, LPL, USF1), gene-pregnancy (LPL), and gene-insulin resistance interactions (APOE, LPL).

Abstract
BACKGROUND Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene polymorphisms have been associated with overweight people and obesity. The goal of this study was to investigate the relationship of the MTHFR 677C>T polymorphism with obesity and biochemical variables in young individuals of Mexico. METHODS A total of 316 young individuals were included in the study, 172 with normal weight (NW) and 144 with over weight/obesity. Body mass index (BMI) was classified as NW, overweight, and obesity. Also, waist circumference was measured. Moreover, glucose, total cholesterol, and triglycerides were determined. Genotyping for MTHFR 677C>T polymorphism was performed by the PCR-RFLP method. RESULTS There was no difference in the distribution of the MTHFR 677C>T polymorphism between individuals with NW and overweight/obesity; neither when they were divided by overweight vs NW, nor when we contrasted obese vs NW. However, an analysis stratified by gender showed a significant protector effect of the TT genotype against obesity in males and elevated waist circumference in females. Also, overweight/obese individuals with TT genotype had less risk of high cholesterol or triglycerides than overweight/obese subjects with the other genotypes. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that the MTHFR 677T polymorphism might not be a risk factor for being overweight/obesity. Rather, on the basis of our results, this variant could be a protector effect. However, further large-scale population-based studies are still necessary to clarify the role of the MTHFR 677C>T polymorphism in overweight, obesity, and lipid profile level.

Abstract
Background The interaction between folate pathway gene polymorphisms and homocysteine, serum lipid leverls are poorly understood in patients with recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA). The aim of this study is to explore the effects of folate pathway gene polymorphisms (the 5–10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase, MTHTR C677T, MTHFR A1298C and the methionine synthase reductase, MTRR A66G) and their interactions with homocysteine on serum lipid levels in patients with RSA. Methods A total of 403 RSA women and 342 healthy women were randomly selected. Genotyping of the MTHFR C677T, A1298C and MTRR A66G were performed by TaqMan-MGB technique. Serum homocysteine, folate, fasting glucose, fasting insulin, Interleukin 6, Tumor necrosis factorα (TNFα) and lipid profiles were measured according to the kits. Continuous variables were analyzed using 2-sample t-tests. Categorical variables were analyzed and compared by χ2 or Fisher’s exact tests. Unconditional logistic regression model was applied to test the interactions of gene polymorphisms on RSA. Results The distribution of genotype of CC, CT TT and T allele of MTHFR C677T, genotype of AA and C allele of MTHFR A1298C, and genotype of AA, AG and G allele of MTRR A66G were different between cases and controls (all p were < 0.05). There were significant interactions between MTHFR C677T-A1298C and MTHFR A1298C-MTRR A66G in RSA group and control group, with ORs of 1.62 (95%CI: 1.28–2.04, p < 0.001) and 1.55 (95%CI: 1.27–1.88, p < 0.001), respectively. Serum TNFα level and insulin resistant status (HOMR-IR) were higher in RSA group than in control group (p = 0.038, 0.001, respectively). All the three gene SNPs except MTRR 66AG gene variant had detrimental effects on HOMA-IR (all p were < 0.05). RSA group who carried the MTHFR 677CT, TT, CT/TT genotypes and MTRR 66AG, AG/GG genotypes had detrimental effects on serum homocysteine levels, the MTHFR 677CT, CT/TT genotype carriers had favorable effects on serum folate levels, the MTHFR 677TT, CT/TT, 1298 AC, AC/CC genotype carriers had detrimental effects on serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels, and the MTRR 66AG genotype carriers had lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels than the AA genotype carriers (all p were < 0.05). Conclusions Interaction between the MTHFR C677T, A1298C and MTHFR A1298C, MTRR A66G are observed in our RSA group. Besides, all the three gene SNPs except MTRR 66AG gene variant had detrimental effects on HOMA-IR. MTHFR C677T and MTRR A66G gene variants had detrimental effects on serum homocysteine levels and insulin resistance status, while MTHFR C677T, A1298C and MTRR A66G gene variants had detrimental effects on certain serum lipid profiles.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Numerous studies have explored the role of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase gene (MTHFR) C677T polymorphism and homocysteine (Hcy) concentration in obesity, but the results are inconsistent. Hence, we performed a meta-analysis implementing Mendelian randomization approach to test the assumption that the increased Hcy concentration is plausibly related to the elevated risk of obesity. METHODS Eligible studies were selected based on several inclusion and exclusion criteria. Correlations between MTHFR C677T and obesity risk, MTHFR C677T and Hcy concentration in obesity, Hcy concentration, and obesity were estimated by ORs, effect size and standard mean difference with their corresponding 95% CIs, respectively. Furthermore, Mendelian randomization analysis was performed to estimate the relationship between Hcy level and obesity. RESULTS Consequently, this meta-analysis implemented with Mendelian randomization approach was conducted among 8,622 cases and 29,695 controls. The results indicated that MTHFR C677T is associated with an increased risk of obesity (for T vs C: OR=1.06, 95% CI=1.02-1.10; for TT vs CC: OR=1.13, 95% CI=1.03-1.24). Moreover, in obese subjects, the pooled Hcy concentration in individuals of TT genotype was 2.91 mmol/L (95% CI: 0.27-5.55) higher than that in individuals of CC genotype. Furthermore, the pooled Hcy concentration in subjects with obesity was 0.74 mmol/L (95% CI: 0.36-1.12) higher than that in controls. The evaluated plausible OR associated with obesity was 1.23 for 5 μmol/L Hcy level increase. CONCLUSIONS Through this meta-analysis, we emphasize a strong relationship between Hcy level and obesity by virtue of MTHFR C677T polymorphism.

Abstract
Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) catalyzes conversion of methylene tetrahydrofolate to methylte trahydrofolate. MTHFR C677T polymorphism has been regarded as a risk factor for various vascular diseases. Our study aimed to investigate the distribution frequencies of this polymorphism among Hakka population living in southern China. We retrospectively recruited 5102 unrelated Chinese Hakka subjects. MTHFR C677T polymorphism was tested using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and DNA sequencing. A total of 2358 males and 2744 females (aged from 10 years to 101 years) were included in this study. In total, 2835 (55.63%) subjects were homozygous for the C allele (CC), 1939 (38.00%) subjects were heterozygous (CT), and 325 (6.37%) subjects were homozygous for the T allele (TT). The allelic frequency of mutant T was 25.37% with 325 individual homozygous for this defective allele resulting in a frequency of about 6.37% for the TT genotype. According to the study results, the overall frequency of MTHFR C677T genotypes did not differ significantly among the gender and age groups. Our study showed the prevalence of MTHFR C677T polymorphism in a large ethnic Hakka population living in southern China. It would be important implications for the primary prevention of various vascular diseases.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Within the last decade, it was realized that during and after long-duration spaceflight, some astronauts experience ophthalmic abnormalities including refractive changes, optic disc edema, globe flattening, choroidal folds, and cotton wool spots. Much research has been initiated and conducted, but little evidence is available to differentiate affected crewmembers. RECENT FINDINGS The first published data to distinguish between affected and nonaffected crewmembers identified biochemical differences in affected astronauts: one-carbon pathway metabolite concentrations were higher in these individuals than in nonaffected astronauts, even before flight. These data led to findings that genetics and B-vitamin status were predictors of the incidence of the ophthalmic abnormalities. A multihit hypothesis was developed, with genetics and B-vitamin status as two of several important elements that all contribute to endothelial dysfunction and ultimately to ophthalmic changes after flight. One of these contributing factors - response to carbon dioxide exposure - was recently documented to be affected by the same one-carbon pathway genetics. SUMMARY This line of research may help identify which astronauts are at risk of these ophthalmic changes, and allow targeted treatment. This research may have implications for clinical populations, including patients with polycystic ovary syndrome, that have similar biochemical, endocrine, and genetic characteristics, and it may shed light on why links between cardiovascular disease and the metabolites homocysteine and folate have been elusive and confounded.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The associations of the 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase gene (MTHFR) rs1801133 polymorphism with coronary artery disease (CAD) and plasma lipid levels have been widely investigated, but the results were inconsistent and inconclusive. This meta-analysis aimed to clarify the relationships of the rs1801133 polymorphism with CAD and plasma lipid levels. METHODS By searching in PubMed, Google Scholar, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Wanfang, VIP and CNKI databases, 123 studies (87,020 subjects) and 65 studies (85,554 subjects) were identified for the CAD association analysis and the lipid association analysis, respectively. Odds ratio (OR) and standardized mean difference (SMD) were used to determine the effects of the rs1801133 polymorphism on CAD risk and lipid levels, respectively. RESULTS The variant T allele of the rs1801133 polymorphism was associated with increased risk of CAD under allelic model [OR = 1.11, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.06-1.17, P < 0.01], additive model (OR = 1.25, 95% CI = 1.14-1.37, P < 0.01), dominant model (OR = 1.11, 95% CI = 1.04-1.17, P < 0.01), and recessive model (OR = 1.22, 95% CI = 1.12-1.32, P < 0.01). The T carriers had higher levels of total cholesterol (TC) (SMD = 0.04, 95% CI = 0.01-0.07, P = 0.02) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (SMD = 0.07, 95% CI = 0.01-0.12, P = 0.01) than the non-carriers. CONCLUSIONS The meta-analysis suggested that the T allele of the rs1801133 polymorphism is a risk factor for CAD, which is possibly and partly mediated by abnormal lipid levels.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the relationship between gene polymorphism of MTRR A66G and lower extremity deep venous thrombosis (DVT). METHODS Two hundred and two patients with DVT as experimental group and 240 normal adults (control group) were enrolled in this study and white blood cells were collected, respectively. Polymorphism of the 66 loci in MTRR gene was detected by polymerase chain reaction-sequence-specific primers (PCR-SSP) in two groups. The frequency of genotype and allele distribution of each group was compared. RESULTS The frequency of AA, AG and GG genotypes in 66 sites of MTRR gene were 26.76%, 4 3.66% and 29.58% in DVT group and 43.57%, 44.28% and 12.14% in control group, respectively. There was no significant difference in the distribution frequency between two groups (χ = 3.2, P > .5). CONCLUSIONS The gene polymorphism of MTRR A66G may not be an independent genetic risk factor in DVT in China.

Abstract
Objective To investigate the association of the MTHFR C677T gene polymorphism with metabolic syndrome (MetS) in people in Hubei Province, China. Methods A case–control study was conducted with 651 subjects with MetS (MetS group) and 727 healthy controls (control group) at Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University between January and December 2016. The MTHFR C677T genotype was detected by the gene chip technique and clinical data were collected. Results Body mass index, waist circumference, the waist-hip-ratio, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, fasting insulin, triglyceride, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, and homocysteine levels, and the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance were higher in the MetS group than in controls. The risk of MetS was higher for the TT genotype and T allele carriers than for the CC genotype and C allele carriers. With MetS, the TT genotype increased the risk of elevated blood pressure, fasting glucose levels, and triglyceride levels. Patients with MetS and the TT genotype showed more severe abdominal obesity, dyslipidaemia, insulin resistance, elevated blood pressure, elevated fasting glucose levels, and hyperhomocysteinaemia compared with those with the CC genotype. Conclusions In this population, MTHFR C677T gene polymorphism may be a risk factor for MetS.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of selected polymorphisms LEP (G2548A), MTHFR (C677T) and FTO (rs1121980) on body mass index in humans. In the study participated 79 people from Slovakia with some genetic relatedness. Genomic DNA was isolated from the buccal swabs using a commercial kit Qiagen DNA Mini Kit (Qiagen). The detection of SNP polymorphisms in human genes LEP, MTHFR and FTO was performed using molecular genetics methods such as PCR-RFLP and ARMS. The most common genotypes in all 3 polymorphism were found in heterozygous form (for LEP AG = 0.5190, for MTHFR CT = 0.519, for FTO CT =0.4051). The LEP gene had increased frequency of G allele (0.5506), the MTHFR gene T allele (0.6646) and FTO gene T allele (0.50635). The least frequent genotype in LEP was AA (0.1899), in MTHFR was TT (0.0759), in FTO it was CC (0.2911). According to the results we can assume that the genotypes AA (LEP G2548A), CC (FTO rs1121980) and TT (MTHFR C677T) in case of women have a protective effect on the prevalence of obesity, based on BMI, compared to the other genotypes and this polymorphism is gender-specific. Added anthropometric measurements, blood test and extension of the group in the future evaluation could increase the statistical relevance in relation to obesity and gender-specificity.

Abstract
The introduction of mandatory fortification of grains with folate in 1998 in the United States resulted in 767 fewer spina bifida cases annually and a cost saving of $603 million per year. However, far more significant medical cost savings result from preventing common diseases, including myocardial infarction, stroke, dementia and osteoporosis. A cost-effectiveness analysis showed a gain of 266 649 quality-adjusted life-years and $3.6 billion saved annually, mainly due to the reduction of cardiac infarction. The recommended folate intake in Japan is 240 μg/day whereas it is 400 μg/day internationally. Our Sakado Folate Project targeted individuals with genetic polymorphism of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase or with hyperhomocysteinemia. Using, for example, folate-fortified rice, resulted in an increase in serum folate and a decrease in serum homocysteine in the participants, and reduced medical costs were achieved by decreasing myocardial infarction, stroke, dementia and fracture. Due to the small population of Sakado City (approximately 101 000) and small number of births (693) in 2015, a decrease in spina bifida could not be confirmed but there was a significant decrease in the number of very low birthweight infants. The genome notification of subjects was effective in motivating intake of folate, but the increase in serum folate (from 17.4 to 22.5 nmol/L, 129%) was less than that observed following compulsory folic acid fortification of cereals in the USA (from 12.1 to 30.2 nmol/L, 149.6%). Mandatory folic acid fortification is cheap in decreasing medical costs and is thus recommended in Japan.
