Abstract
Metabolic syndrome exhibits associations with diverse neurological disorders, and its potential influence on the cerebral cortex may be one of the many potential factors contributing to these adverse outcomes. In this study, we aimed to investigate the causal relationship between metabolic syndrome and changes in cerebral cortex structure using Mendelian randomization analysis. Genome-wide association study data for the 5 components of metabolic syndrome were obtained from individuals of European descent in the UK Biobank. Genome-wide association study data for 34 known cortical functional regions were sourced from the ENIGMA Consortium. Data on Alzheimer's disease, major depression, and anxiety disorder were obtained from the IEU Open genome-wide association study database. The causal links between metabolic syndrome elements and cerebral cortex architecture were evaluated using inverse variance weighting, Mendelian randomization-Egger, and weighted median techniques, with inverse variance weighting as the primary method. Inverse variance weighting, Mendelian randomization Egger, weighted median, simple mode, and weighted mode methods were employed to assess the relationships between metabolic syndrome and neurological diseases (Alzheimer's disease, major depression, and anxiety disorder). Outliers, heterogeneity, and pleiotropy were assessed using Cochran's Q test, MR-PRESSO, leave-one-out analysis, and funnel plots. Globally, no causal link was found between metabolic syndrome and overall cortical thickness or surface area. However, regionally, metabolic syndrome may influence the surface area of specific regions, including the caudal anterior cingulate, postcentral, posterior cingulate, rostral anterior cingulate, isthmus cingulate, superior parietal, rostral middle frontal, middle temporal, insula, pars opercularis, cuneus, and inferior temporal. It may also affect the thickness of the medial orbitofrontal, caudal middle frontal, paracentral, superior frontal, superior parietal, and supramarginal regions. These findings were nominally significant and withstood sensitivity analyses, showing no substantial heterogeneity or pleiotropy. Furthermore, we found an association between metabolic syndrome and the risk of Alzheimer's disease, major depression, and anxiety disorder. This study suggests a potential association between metabolic syndrome and changes in cerebral cortex structure, which may underlie certain neurological disorders. Furthermore, we found an association between metabolic syndrome and the risk of Alzheimer's disease, major depression, and anxiety disorder. Early diagnosis of metabolic syndrome holds significance in preventing these neurological disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a severe mental illness with high relapse rates and high mortality. Depression not only severely limits psychosocial functioning but also reduces quality of life. It can also negatively affect patients' clinical parameters, including lipid metabolism markers. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and risk factors of hyperlipidemia (HL) in patients with MDD who were hospitalized for the first time. METHODS In this study, we enrolled 981 patients with MDD who were hospitalized for the first time, collected their demographic data and biochemical indicators, and evaluated their clinical symptoms. We divided the patients into HL and non-HL subgroups based on whether they had co-morbid HL. We compared whether there were significant differences between the two groups regarding demographics and general clinical information. RESULTS A total of 708 of 981 MDD patients were described as being in the hyperlipidemic group, with an incidence of 72.17%. Clinical Global Impression Scale-Severity of Illness (CGI-SI) score and Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD) score are risk factors for co-morbid HL in patients with MDD. The area under the ROC curve for the CGI-SI and HAMD score and their combined discriminatory ability was approximately 63%, 67%, and 68%, respectively. CONCLUSION The prevalence of HL was high in patients with MDD who were first hospitalized; Higher HAMD score and CGI-SI score were risk factors for the development of HL in MDD; The HAMD score and the CGI-SI score are predictive of the severity of HL.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cholesterol is an essential component of the neuronal cell membrane and is crucial for neuronal function; however, the role of cholesterol levels in Parkinson's disease (PD) is debatable. This study investigated the complex relationship between total cholesterol (TC) levels, body mass index (BMI), and cognition in patients with PD. METHODS This study included 321 drug-naïve patients with PD who underwent dopamine transporter (DAT) imaging and baseline neuropsychological tests. Multivariate linear regression and Cox regression models were used to investigate the effect of TC levels on the composite score of each cognitive domain and dementia conversion after adjusting for covariates, respectively. Interaction analyses were performed to examine the interaction effect between TC levels and BMI on baseline cognition and dementia conversion. RESULTS TC levels and cognition showed no significant relationship after adjusting for potential confounders. A significant interaction effect between TC levels and BMI was observed in frontal/executive function and dementia conversion. Further analyses showed that TC levels were positively associated with frontal/executive function in the under-/normal weight group (β = 0.205, p = 0.013), whereas a negative relationship existed between TC levels and frontal/executive function in the obese group (β = - 0.213, p = 0.017). Cox regression analyses also showed the differential effects of TC levels on dementia conversion according to BMI (under-/normal weight group: hazard ratio [HR] = 0.550, p = 0.013; obese group: HR = 2.085, p = 0.014). CONCLUSIONS This study suggests a cross-over interaction between TC levels and BMI on cognitive symptoms in PD.

Abstract
We aimed to assess the association between rice intake and cognitive function among Qatari adults and test the interactions with health conditions. Data from 1000 adults aged ≥18 years old who attended the Qatar Biobank (QBB) study were used. Rice dietary intake was measured by a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), and mean reaction time (MRT) was used as an indicator of cognitive function. Linear regression and structure equation models were used. The mean rice consumption was 7.6 times/week (SD 2.0). The sample had a mean MRT of 717 milliseconds (SD 205). Rice consumption was positively associated with MRT. Across the quartiles of rice intake, the regression coefficients (95% CI) for MRT were 0.0 (reference), 22.4 (-7.8, 52.6), 36.3 (5.1, 67.5), and 34.5 (2.6, 66.4). There was a significant interaction between rice intake and hypertension, BMI, and blood lipids in relation to MRT. The association between rice intake and MRT was only observed among those with hypertension, overweight/obesity, low LDL, and low total cholesterol levels. Serum magnesium did not mediate the association. High rice consumption was associated with a higher MRT, especially among those with hypertension, overweight/obesity, low LDL, and or low total cholesterol levels. Further longitudinal studies are needed to confirm the findings.

Abstract
Purpose The prevalence of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) associated with lipid levels is increasing worldwide. Our purpose is to analyze the distribution level and influencing factors of lipid in the whole population and to put forward suggestions for preventing abnormal lipid levels. Methods The study was based on a sample of 91,480 Chinese who participated in a nationwide physical examination program in Wuhan, a midland city in China, in 2018. The distribution of blood lipid in the population was observed using average, and the relationship between the influencing factors and blood lipid level was observed by quantile regression (QR). Results A total of 91,480 people were evaluated in this study, among which 59,165 (64.68%) were female with a mean age of 51.71 ± 10.82 years. QR results showed that different physical examination indexes had different effects on lipid levels. Fasting plasma glucose (FBG) has the largest QR coefficient and BMI had positive effects on total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). In males, age has a positive influence on TC, LDL-C, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), while in females, age has a positive influence on all four indexes. Conclusion We found that the TC and LDL-C levels of females were more susceptible to age than males, and the lipid levels of older females were higher than males. BMI has a greater effect on lipid levels in males than in females. Regardless of gender should pay attention to dyslipidemia caused by diabetes and abnormal liver function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between body mass index (BMI) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) has not been clearly elucidated in middle-aged and older adults. This study aimed to evaluate the non-linear dose-response relationship between BMI and LDL-C in males and females. METHODS Data was obtained from two nationally representative surveys in China-the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS, 2009) and China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS, 2011-2012). To evaluate the sex differences in the association between BMI and LDL-C, the generalized additive models with a smooth function for continuous BMI and smooth-factor interaction for sexes with BMI were used. Segmented regressions were fitted to calculate the slopes with different estimated breakpoints among females and males. RESULTS A total of 12,273 participants (47.1% male) aged 45 to 75 years were included. The generalized additive models revealed that a non-linear relationship between BMI and LDL-C level in both sexes after adjustment for age, residence, education levels, marital status, drinking, smoking status, and cohort (CHNS or CHARLS). Slopes of the association between BMI and LDL-C association changed at BMI 20.3 kg/m2 (95% CI: 18.8 to 21.8) in females and 27.1 kg/m2 (95% CI: 25. 8 to 28.4) in males. Below these BMI breakpoints, LDL-C levels increased 1.84 (95% CI: 1.45 to 2.31) in males and 3.49 (95% CI: 1.54 to 5.45) mg/dL per kg/m2 in females. However, LDL-C levels declined - 1.50 (95% CI: - 2.92 to - 0.09) mg/dL per kg/m2 above BMI of 27.1 kg/m2 in males. The non-linear association BMI and LDL-C in males and females was varied by cohort source, age groups, and the number of metabolic syndrome criteria. CONCLUSIONS In the Chinese middle aged and older adults, the BMI and LDL-C relationship was inverted U-shaped with a high level of LDL-C at a BMI of 27.1 kg/m2 in males, and an approximately linear association was observed in females.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tea and coffee consumption is associated with cognitive function in some studies. OBJECTIVE We aimed to identify tea and coffee drinking patterns and their association with mean reaction time among Qatari adults. METHOD The study included 1,000 adults aged 20 years and above attending the Qatar Biobank Study (QBB). Habitual tea and coffee consumption during the previous year was assessed by questionnaire. Tea and coffee drinking patterns were identified using factor analysis. In a computer-based self-administered touch screens test, mean reaction time (MRT) was used as an indicator of cognitive function. RESULTS The mean age of the participants was 35.8 (SD 10.3) years. Herbal tea and regular coffee consumption was inversely associated with MRT. In the multivariable model, compared with non-consumers, the regression coefficients for MRT were -34.3 (-65.4, -3.3) and -37.9 (-71.0, -4.7) for daily consumers of herbal tea and regular coffee, respectively. Of the two tea and coffee drinking patterns identified, pattern 1 (high consumption of tea, Arabic coffee, and herbal tea) was not associated with MRT but pattern 2 (high loadings of instant coffee, regular coffee, and Karak) was inversely associated with MRT in the unadjusted model. There was a significant interaction between pattern 2 and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) in relation to MRT. Pattern 2 was inversely associated with MRT among those with a low LDL. CONCLUSION There was an inverse association between regular coffee and herbal tea consumption with mean reaction time. There was an interaction between Western coffee pattern and LDL.

Abstract
The relationship between physical activity amount and cognitive function in elderly Koreans has received little attention. This study therefore aimed to understand the independent and common link between cognitive function and physical activity levels among elderly Korean adults. This study recruited a total of 2746 elderly adults (1348 males and 1398 females). All participants were assessed for cognitive functioning using the Korean Dementia Screening Questionnaire Cognition (KDSQ-C). The computerized Korean version short form of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) used in this study was entirely based on the long, self-administered, usual week-long IPAQ found in the IPAQ manual of operation. In the unadjusted model, elderly adults who met the recommended level of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity were more likely to have a sufficient level of cognitive function. Hemoglobin, creatinine, cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), LDL-C, and HDL-C differed significantly between groups. A negative correlation was found between KDSQ-C score and the moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) amount per week. Physical activity amount is associated with cognition function in Korean elderly adults. Increasing physical activity may improve hemoglobin and creatinine and be involved in improving serum lipid profiles in elderly adults. Thus, physical activity has been suggesting as a useful tool to reduce the risk of cognitive function associated with aging.
