Abstract
BACKGROUND A successful transition from the NICU to home is fundamental for the long-term health and well-being of preterm infants. Post-NICU discharge, parents may experience a lack of support and resources during the transition to home. The purpose of this scoping review was to identify post-NICU discharge interventions that may reduce parental stress and provide support to families with preterm infants. METHOD Systematic searches of databases, i.e., PubMed, Web of Science, and CINAHL. Inclusion criteria were data-based articles: 1) published in English between 2011 and 2021, 2) published in peer-reviewed journals, (3) focused on families with preterm infants, and (4) focused on interventions to reduce parental stress and provide support to families with preterm infants post-NICU discharge. RESULTS 26 articles were included and synthesized. We identified the following face-to-face and remote communication interventions: in-person home visits, phone/video calls, text messages, periodic email questionnaires, mobile/website apps, and online social networking sites. DISCUSSION Families may highly benefit from a comprehensive family-focused post-NICU discharge follow-up intervention that includes face-to-face and remote communication and support. Post-NICU discharge interventions are imperative to provide education related to infant care and health, increase parental confidence and competency, increase parent-infant relationship, promote emotional and social support, reduce unplanned hospital visits, parental stress, and maternal post-partum depression.

Abstract
The Tromsø Intervention Study on Preterms (TISP) randomized 146 preterm born children (<2000 g) either to the Mother-Infant Transaction Program-Modified (MITP-M, n = 72) or to a preterm control group (n = 74). In addition, 75 full-term babies were followed up until 9 years of age. TISP was conducted at the University Hospital Northern Norway (UNN) and only infants who did not have congenital anomalies and families where the mothers’ native language was Norwegian were included. The study investigates the effect of MITP-M on cognitive and social development including behavioral problems, quality of life and stress in the family. The results have so far been published in various journals. The aim of this article is to give a comprehensive overall presentation of the main findings and discuss implications for clinical practice and further research. Parents in the intervention group were superior in “reading” their infants’ temperament, and at 3, 5 and 7 years of age the intervention group scored significantly higher on well-known tests of cognitive outcome. At 9 years of age, the intervention group had fewer attentional problems, better school achievements and a better quality of life. From the first year onwards, mothers and fathers in the intervention group reported lower levels of stress than parents of in the preterm control group.

Abstract
A preterm birth represents a stressful event having potentially negative long-term consequences. Thirty-three children born preterm (<33 weeks gestational age) and eleven full-term children participated in a nine-year longitudinal study. Perinatal Risk Inventory (PERI) was used at birth to assess the perinatal stress. Salivary cortisol, collected four times a day over two consecutive days, was measured with radioimmunoassay technique at six months and nine years to assess the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Mothers reported post-traumatic symptoms on a self-report questionnaire 12 months after their child's birth and children's adjustment problems at 9 years of child age on the Child Behavior Checklist. Results showed a significant difference in cortisol regulation at nine years between preterm and full-term children but no differences in adjustment problems. Whereas biological factors (i.e., PERI, cortisol regulation at six months) explained cortisol at nine years, maternal post-traumatic symptoms were predictive of adjustment problems in their child. In conclusion, very preterm birth has some long-term consequences on the HPA-axis regulation at nine years. Although cortisol regulation is mostly influenced by biological factors, the presence of maternal post-traumatic symptoms predicts the manifestation of adjustment problems in both groups. This shows the importance of maternal psychological well-being for child development. Further research is needed to understand the exact consequences of premature birth on cortisol regulation and the implication for the child's development and health.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine self-reported and parent-reported health-related quality of life (HRQL) in adults born extremely preterm compared with control participants born at term and to evaluate trajectories of health status from adolescence to early adulthood. STUDY DESIGN The EPICure study comprises all births <26 weeks of gestation in the United Kingdom and Ireland in 1995 and control participants born at term recruited at age 6 years. In total, 129 participants born extremely preterm and 65 control participants were followed up at the 19-year assessment. HRQL was measured by the Health Utilities Index Mark 3 multiattribute utility (MAU) scores. Only parent-reported HRQL was available at 11 years of age. RESULTS Participants born extremely preterm without neurodevelopmental impairment had significantly lower MAU scores at 19 years than controls (median [IQR]: 0.91 [0.79, 0.97] vs 0.97 [0.87, 1.00], P = .008); those with impairment had the lowest scores (0.74 [0.49, 0.90]). A 0.03-0.05 difference is considered clinically significant. Parent-reported findings were similar. Participants born extremely preterm with impairment rated their health significantly better than their parents did (0.74 vs 0.58, P = .01), in contrast to those without impairment and controls. Between 11 and 19 years, median parent-reported MAU scores decreased from 0.87 to 0.77 for participants born extremely preterm (P = .01) and from 1.00 to 0.97 for control participants (P = .02). CONCLUSIONS Among young adults born extremely preterm, both participants and parents rated their health status less favorably than control participants born at term. The decline in MAU scores from adolescence to early adulthood following extremely preterm birth indicates continuing health issues in young adult life.

Abstract
The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate the effect of an infant mental health intervention, the Newborn Behavioral Observations system (NBO), versus usual care (UC) on infant neurodevelopment and maternal depressive symptoms in early intervention (EI). This multisite randomized trial enrolled newborns into the NBO (n = 16) or UC group (n = 22) and followed them for 6 months. Outcome measures included the Battelle Developmental Inventory (BDI-2), Bayley Scales of Infants Development (BSID-III), and Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). The CES-D and BSID-III were collected at 3- and 6-months post EI entry and the BDI-2 was collected at EI entry and 6-months post-EI entry. We estimated group differences [95% CI], adjusting for program characteristics. At 6 months, the NBO group had greater gains in Communication (b = 1.0 [0.2, 1.8]), Self-Care (b = 2.0 [0.1, 3.9]), Perception and Concepts (b = 2.0 [0.4, 3.6]), and Attention and Memory (b = 3.0 [0.4, 6.0]) than the UC group. The NBO group also had greater decline in maternal postnatal depressive symptoms (b = -2.0 [-3.7, -0.3]) than the UC group. Infants receiving the NBO infant mental health intervention had greater gains in cognitive and adaptive functions at 6 months than infants receiving UC. Caregivers receiving NBO care had greater improvements in maternal depressive symptoms than caregivers receiving UC.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess parents' views of their children's health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and the association between neonatal morbidities and HRQoL in children with severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) who survived to 18-36 months of corrected age. STUDY DESIGN Study population included infants born <32 weeks of gestational age with severe BPD. At 18-36 months of corrected age, parents of children with severe BPD completed age appropriate validated Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory assessing parental views of their child's physical (PHY-QoL) and psychosocial HRQoL (PS-QoL). Ten neonatal morbidities provided a composite morbidity score between 0 and 10. Linear regression evaluated associations between PHY-QoL and PS-QoL with composite morbidity score, adjusting for gestational age, sex, corrected age at assessment. RESULTS Seventy children (67% male, gestational age 26.1 ± 2.0 weeks, and birth weight 797 ± 318g) were enrolled at 27.1 ± 5.8 months of corrected age. Mean PHY-QoL and PS-QoL were 78.0 ± 21.9 and 75.3 ± 17.9, respectively, both significantly lower than reported means for term and preterm cohorts, with the exception of emotional QoL. Adjusted postnatal composite morbidity score was cumulatively associated with poorer PHY-QoL (P = .002) and poorer PS-QoL (P = .015). Presence of each additional neonatal morbidity was associated with a 4.4-point decrease in PHY-QoL and 2.8-point decrease in PS-QoL. CONCLUSIONS In this cohort, parental perceived HRQoL for their child with severe BPD was lower than expected for term and preterm populations. Neonatal morbidities had an additive association with poorer parental assessment of PHY-QoL and PS-QoL. These findings may aid in care of children with severe BPD and their families, both in the intensive care nursery and postdischarge.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The need for behavioral health services, service utilization, and predictors of utilization was examined in children with moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) relative to a comparison group of children with orthopedic injury (OI) 6.8 years after injury. METHODS A total of 130 children hospitalized for moderate-to-severe TBI (16 severe and 42 moderate) or OI (72) between the ages of 3 and 7 years, who were enrolled at the time of injury at 3 tertiary care children's hospital and one general hospital in Ohio, and completed a long-term follow-up 6.8 years after injury were included in analyses. RESULTS Adolescents with TBI (moderate [38%] and severe [69%]) had significantly greater rates of need than those with OI (17%). Behavioral health services were utilized by 10% of the sample with no injury group differences (OI: 6%; moderate: 17%; severe: 13%). Early treatment and white race were associated with less service utilization; 77% had an unmet need, with no injury group differences (OI: 75%; moderate: 75%; severe: 82%). Rate of unmet need was greater among white than non-white children. CONCLUSION Children who sustain a TBI in early childhood experience persistent and clinically significant impairments even years after injury. Rates of unmet need were high for all injury groups. Findings underscore the importance of long-term monitoring to identify developing needs and prevent significant complications/deficits.

Abstract
Behavioral and emotional problems are one of the most frequent chronic conditions diagnosed among children born prematurely. The high prevalence of these pathologies is a matter of concern because of their impact on family life, school performance, and social interaction, but also because of current limitations in early detection and access to treatment. This is a review of the various mechanisms by which premature birth affects social and emotional development, and a discussion about strategies that may help support emotional and social development in this high-risk population.

Abstract
Introduction Parents have a major impact on the outcome of health care of preterm infants. Parents’ engagement in meaningful activities could have an impact on their own health and wellbeing and therefore be relevant in neonatal intensive care. The aim of this study was to explore meaningful activities of parents of very low birth weight (VLBW) preterm infants with the purpose to further the understanding of their clinical relevance and to foster their consideration in clinical practice and research of neonatal intensive care. Methods A total of 36 parents of preterm infants born prior to complete 37 weeks of gestation with VLBW (≤1.500 grams) were asked to participate in a focus group interview. Interview transcripts were used to analyse the content of the focus group interviews using meaning condensation method by Steinar Kvale. Results Thirty-six parents participated in a total of twelve focus groups. Parents reported that the meaning of certain activities changed due to preterm birth. Meaningful activities, like bathing the baby and gardening, could foster a transition from a feeling of parental immaturity to a feeling of maturity, following health care instructions to possessing health care skills, and a functioning-only state to a balance of activities. Conclusions In neonatal intensive care, nurses contribute to delivering parental education and thereby facilitate experiences of being a mature parent and of possessing health care skills. Occupational therapy could be used to help re-engage in meaningful activities and maintain a balance of activities in parents of VLBW preterm infants.

Abstract
Background Various intervention programs exist for parents of preterm babies and some systematic reviews (SRs) have synthesised the evidence of their effectiveness. These reviews are, however, limited to specific interventions, components, or outcomes, and a comprehensive evidence base is lacking. The aim of this meta-review was to appraise and meta-synthesise the evidence from existing SRs to provide a comprehensive evidence base on the effectiveness of interventions for parents of preterm infants on parental and infant outcomes. Methods We conducted a comprehensive search of the following databases to identify relevant SRs: Cochrane library, Web of science, EMBASE, CINAHL, British Nursing Index, PsycINFO, Medline, ScienceDirect, Scopus, IBSS, DOAJ, ERIC, EPPI-Centre, PROSPERO, WHO Library. Additional searches were conducted using authors’ institutional libraries, Google Scholar, and the reference lists of identified reviews. Identified articles were screened in two stages against an inclusion criteria with titles and abstracts screened first followed by full-text screening. Selected SRs were appraised using the AMSTAR tool. Extracted data using a predesigned tool were synthesised narratively examining the direction of impact on outcomes. Results We found 11 SRs eligible for inclusion that synthesised a total of 343 quantitative primary studies. The average quality of the SRs was ‘medium’. Thirty four interventions were reported across the SRs with considerable heterogeneity in the structural framework and the targeted outcomes that included maternal-infant dyadic, maternal/parental, and infant outcomes. Among all interventions, Kangaroo Care (KC) showed the most frequent positive impact across outcomes (n = 19) followed by Mother Infant Transaction Program (MITP) (n = 14). Other interventions with most consistent positive impact on infant outcomes were Modified-Mother Infant Transaction Program (M-MITP) (n = 6), Infant Health and Development Program (IHDP) (n = 5) and Creating Opportunities for Parent Empowerment (COPE) (n = 5). Overall, interventions with both home and facility based components showed the most frequent positive impact across outcomes. Conclusions Neonatal care policy and planning for preterm babies should consider the implementation of interventions with most positive impact on outcomes. The heterogeneity in interventions and outcomes calls for the development and implementation of an integrated program for parents of preterm infants with a clearly defined global set of parental and infant outcomes.

Abstract
The quality of care that families and infants receive during their time on the neonatal unit will be influenced by the well-being of the people who care for them. The emotional work of caring for infants and families in this demanding setting often goes unrecognized and can result in stress, burnout, and compassion fatigue, which in turn are a threat to the quality of care. Resilience and well-being can be fostered by encouraging self-maintenance, supportive systems organization, providing a healthy working environment, education, and opportunities for reflection.
