Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study is to estimate the association between night work and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among French workers. The association between cumulative duration of night work and HRQoL was also investigated. METHODS Three career-long night work exposure groups were defined at inclusion in the CONSTANCES cohort: permanent night workers, rotating night workers and former night workers. Day workers with no experience of night work were the reference group. HRQoL was assessed using the Short Form Health Survey (SF-12), in particular the physical component summary (PCS) and mental component summary (MCS) scores, with a higher score indicating better HRQoL. Several linear regression models were built to test the association between night work exposure and HRQoL. The relationship between cumulative duration of night work and HRQoL scores was analyzed using generalised additive models. RESULTS The sample consisted of 10,372 participants. Former night workers had a significantly lower PCS score than day workers (β [95% CI]: - 1.09 [- 1.73; - 0.45], p = 0.001), whereas permanent night workers had a significantly higher MCS score (β [95% CI]: 1.19 [0.009; 2.36], p = 0.048). A significant decrease in PCS score from 5 to 20 years of cumulative night work was observed among former night workers. CONCLUSIONS Former night workers had poorer physical HRQoL in contrast to permanent and rotating night workers who had similar or even better HRQoL than day workers, suggesting the well-known healthy worker survivor effect. Consequently, both current and former night workers require regular and specific follow-up focused on the physical components of their health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Staff in residential long-term care (RLTC) experience significant physical and mental work demands. However, research on specific interventions to promote staff health and well-being in RLTC facilities is limited. This systematic review aimed to synthesize the current evidence on health promotion interventions among RLTC staff. METHODS A comprehensive systematic literature review was conducted on studies published between January 2000 and April 2023. Four electronic databases were searched, including PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), and PsychArticles via EBSCO. The review followed the guidelines outlined in the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) protocol. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed using the Risk of Bias Assessment tool (RoB 2). RESULTS A total of 26 publications, referring to 23 different interventions with a randomized controlled design were included. Among these interventions, ten used training/educational approaches, six used behavioral approaches, and seven employed a multimodal approach. Significant improvements in health and well-being outcomes were found in four interventions using a training/educational approach, three interventions using a behavioral approach, and four interventions using a multimodal approach. Within the interventions studied, twelve specifically targeted the reduction of job demands, while only one intervention exclusively addressed job resources among RLTC staff. Furthermore, ten interventions addressed primary outcomes that encompassed both job demands and job resources. CONCLUSION Current evidence for health promotion interventions among RLTC staff is still limited, but research suggests that there is potential to improve certain outcomes related to RLTC staff health and well-being. Future research is recommended to contemplate a tailored intervention design that encompasses both individual-level and organizational-level approaches, and gender-specific physiological and sociological characteristics of RLTC staff. Moreover, detailed reporting of the development process, and research on the interaction between job demands and resources of RLTC staff are also recommended.

Abstract
The Nigerian healthcare industry is bedevilled with infrastructural dilapidations and a dysfunctional healthcare system. This study investigated the influence of healthcare professionals' well-being and quality of work-life (QoWL) on the quality of care (QoC) of patients in Nigeria. A multicentre cross-sectional study was conducted at four tertiary healthcare institutions in southwest, Nigeria. Participants' demographic information, well-being, quality of life (QoL), QoWL, and QoC were obtained using four standardised questionnaires. Data were summarised using descriptive statistics. Inferential statistics included Chi-square, Pearson's correlation, independent samples t-test, confirmatory factor analyses and structural equation model. Medical practitioners (n = 609) and nurses (n = 570) constituted 74.6% of all the healthcare professionals with physiotherapists, pharmacists, and medical laboratory scientists constituting 25.4%. The mean (SD) participants' well-being = 71.65% (14.65), QoL = 61.8% (21.31), QoWL = 65.73% (10.52) and QoC = 70.14% (12.77). Participants' QoL had a significant negative correlation with QoC while well-being and quality of work-life had a significant positive correlation with QoC. We concluded that healthcare professionals' well-being and QoWL are important factors that influence the QoC rendered to patients. Healthcare policymakers in Nigeria should ensure improved work-related factors and the well-being of healthcare professionals to ensure good QoC for patients.

Abstract
This qualitative study explored potential factors that lead to turnover and absenteeism and how to improve well-being and retention among professional older-adult-caregivers in Alberta's assisted living (AL) and long-term care (LTC) facilities. Four hundred and forty-seven participants aged 45-54 years were interviewed through a five-item, content-validated open-ended questionnaire. The questionnaire was self-administered in the English language and the soft copy of their responses was transferred into NVIVO version 12 software for coding. A thematic narrative analysis grounded in the "happy productive worker" theory was completed. The main themes were caregivers' perception of the factors affecting their well-being, absenteeism, and turnover, and caregivers' suggestions on ways to improve their well-being and retention. Participants reported that their professional well-being was suboptimal. They suggested that their employers should provide them with the needed social, psychological, and professional support, improve wages and hire more staff to ameliorate absenteeism and turnover rates.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The organizational context in healthcare (i.e., the work environment) is associated with patient outcomes and job satisfaction. Long-term care is often considered to be a challenging work environment, characterized by high job demands, low job control, a fast work pace and job dissatisfaction, which may affect patient care and increase staff turnover.This study aims to investigate the organizational context in nursing homes and the features of favorable or less favorable work environments. METHODS This study is a cross-sectional study of registered nurses and licensed practical nurses in Bergen, Norway (n = 1014). The K-means clustering algorithm was used to differentiate between favorable and less favorable work environments, based on the Alberta Context Tool. Multilevel logistic regression analysis was used to investigate the associations between individual sociodemographic factors, nursing home factors and the probability of experiencing a favorable work environment. RESULTS 45% of the sample (n = 453) experienced working in a favorable work environment. Contextual features (especially a supportive work culture, more evaluation mechanisms and greater organizational slack resources) and individual features (having a native language other than Norwegian, working day shifts, working full time and belonging to a younger age group) significantly increased the likelihood of experiencing a favorable work environment. CONCLUSION The work environment in nursing homes is composed of modifiable contextual features. Action in relation to less favorable features and their associated factors should be a priority for nursing home management. This survey indicates that specific steps can be taken to reduce the reliance on part-time workers and to promote the work environment among staff working the night shift.

Abstract
This cross-sectional study evaluated and quantified the possible association of psychological symptoms and health status ratings on the burnout of healthcare workers from a tertiary medical center. Demographic data were obtained through a questionnaire survey. We evaluated their psychological symptoms using a 5-item Brief Symptom Rating Scale (BSRS-5) and burnout was measured using the Chinese version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory–Health Services Survey. The study began in Nov. 2018 and ended in Nov. 2020. A total of 2813 participants (men = 296, 10.5%; women = 2517, 89.5%) completed the questionnaires between December 2018 and March 2019. The response rate and complete rate were 71.7% and 93.2%. The multivariate analysis showed that, as the BSRS-5 level added, the odds ratio (OR) of burnout increased (BSRS-5 scores 6–9, 10–14, and 15–20; OR = 1.83, 3.23, and 9.15, separately; p value < 0.05). Overall, men (≥ 30 years of age) and women staffs with BSRS-5 scores ≥ 6; women with longer working hours (more than 46 h/week), men and women (≥ 30 years of age) working night shifts, and poor health status ratings were highly associated with burnout. The findings highlight the importance of screening for the BSRS-5 scores and health status ratings level for healthcare professionals at high risk of burnout, especially men ≥ 30 years of age and women with stressful working conditions.

Abstract
Shift work is associated with systemic chronic inflammation, impaired host and tumor defense and dysregulated immune responses to harmless antigens such as allergens or auto-antigens. Thus, shift workers are at higher risk to develop a systemic autoimmune disease and circadian disruption with sleep impairment seem to be the key underlying mechanisms. Presumably, disturbances of the sleep-wake cycle also drive skin-specific autoimmune diseases, but epidemiological and experimental evidence so far is scarce. This review summarizes the effects of shift work, circadian misalignment, poor sleep, and the effect of potential hormonal mediators such as stress mediators or melatonin on skin barrier functions and on innate and adaptive skin immunity. Human studies as well as animal models were considered. We will also address advantages and potential pitfalls in animal models of shift work, and possible confounders that could drive skin autoimmune diseases in shift workers such as adverse lifestyle habits and psychosocial influences. Finally, we will outline feasible countermeasures that may reduce the risk of systemic and skin autoimmunity in shift workers, as well as treatment options and highlight outstanding questions that should be addressed in future studies.

Abstract
Background Non-standard work schedules (NSWSs), occurring outside of regular and predictable daytime hours, may negatively affect worker and family health. This qualitative study sought to understand worker perspectives on the health and well-being impacts of NSWSs among full-time, transportation maintainers, correctional, and manufacturing workers. Methods Forty-nine workers participated in 8 focus groups. Data were transcribed and analyzed with ATLAS.ti, using the constant comparative method to identify themes and sub-themes. Results Workers reported that long work hours and irregular and unpredictable schedules posed the biggest obstacles to their well-being. Workers reported that NSWSs were associated with behavior impacts (poor family and social connections, poor eating, poor sleep, lack of exercise recovery), physical health impacts (exhaustion, weight gain) and extended work exposures (increased stress, increased accidents). Conclusions This highlights the importance of developing and implementing effective workplace interventions to address these barriers to health and health behaviors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Shift work affects health status of healthcare providers and patients. We assessed the effect of shift work on psychomotor activities of emergency medicine residents of 3 university hospitals. METHODS The participants were enrolled to perform selected psychomotor tests via the Vienna test system (VTS) after written consent. They passed 4 episodes of test performance before and after 2 consecutive day and night clinical shifts of 12 hours. The status of general health, circadian rhythm, sleepiness, smoking habits, and the scores of the cognition test (COG), the determination test (DT), and the visual pursuit test of emergency medicine residents were compared before and after morning and night shifts. RESULTS Overall, 23 residents (34.8% were male) performed tests. The mean (SD) age was 35.7 + 8.5 years. The mean general health and circadian scores before and after day/night shifts were not different. The Stanford sleepiness scale showed higher scores after night shifts. In the cognition test, the sum of correct rejections was higher after day shifts. Moreover, in the DT results, correct responses were more prevalent, the omitted responses were fewer accompanied by better median reaction time after day shifts. The sum of correct rejections of the COG test showed difference in terms of improved results in night tests compared to day-shift tests. The mean reaction time of the DT showed significant difference with shorter reaction time in night-shift tests. The visual pursuit test results were not different between day and night shifts. CONCLUSIONS Sleepiness was higher after night shifts. The results of selected psychomotor tests showed that the psychomotor function of the residents was not delayed or worse after night shifts in comparison to the day shifts.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Numerous studies have investigated factors for non-specific chronic low back pain (NSCLBP) in nurses, and have reached different conclusions. Evidence-based recommendations are required for the prevention and treatment of NSCLBP in nurses. OBJECTIVE This meta-analysis aimed to systematically review and quantify the factors of NSCLBP in nurses. METHODS Eleven databases were searched. The odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were pooled using meta-analysis, and either a fixed-effect or random-effect model was used based on heterogeneity across included studies. RESULTS Eighteen publications including 11,752 nursing staff were included. Being female (pooled estimate [95% CI], 1.56 [1.24-1.96]; P< 0.001), married (1.89 [1.38-2.60]; P< 0.001), overweight (0.63 [0.43-0.93]; P= 0.02), working at least 10 years (0.65 [0.48-0.89]; P= 0.007), and working night shifts (2.19 [1.16-4.21]; P= 0.02) were positively related to NSCLBP. Junior college education (0.60 [0.47-0.77]; P< 0.001) and job satisfaction (0.58 [0.47-0.73]; P< 0.001) were negatively related. Age (0.80 [0.50-1.27]; P= 0.34) and physical exercise (0.99 [0.39-2.49]; P= 0.98) were not related. CONCLUSIONS This is the first meta-analysis to quantify the risk factors for NSCLBP in nurses. Being female, married, working night shifts, overweight, working at least 10 years and dissatisfied with work are risk factors. High-quality prospective studies are required to validate the findings of this study.
