Abstract
Neuroinfections rank among the top ten leading causes of child mortality globally, even in high-income countries. The crucial determinants for successful treatment lie in the timing and swiftness of diagnosis. Although viruses constitute the majority of infectious neuropathologies, diagnosing and treating viral neuroinfections remains challenging. Despite technological advancements, the etiology of the disease remains undetermined in over half of cases. The identification of the pathogen becomes more difficult when the infection is caused by atypical pathogens or multiple pathogens simultaneously. Furthermore, the modern surge in global passenger traffic has led to an increase in cases of infections caused by pathogens not endemic to local areas. This review aims to systematize and summarize information on neuroinvasive viral pathogens, encompassing their geographic distribution and transmission routes. Emphasis is placed on rare pathogens and cases involving atypical pathogens, aiming to offer a comprehensive and structured catalog of viral agents with neurovirulence potential.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sepsis remains a global health burden associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Bacteria are known to be the predominant pathogens in sepsis; however, viral etiologies in sepsis are still under diagnosed. Respiratory viral pathogens have been previously linked to sepsis, but the knowledge of incidence, disease burden and mortality of viral-induced sepsis remains limited. This study aimed at understanding the role of respiratory viral infections in the causation of sepsis in liver disease patients. METHODS In this retrospective study, the clinical records of liver disease patients with influenza-like illness, whose requests for respiratory viral testing were received from January 2019 to December 2022, were reviewed. Respiratory viruses were identified using FilmArray 2.0 respiratory panel (BioFire Diagnostics, Utah, USA). RESULTS Of 1391 patients tested, a respiratory viral etiology was detected in 23%. The occurrence of sepsis was seen in 35%. Among these, isolated viral etiology with no other bacterial/fungal coinfection was found in 55% of patients. Rhinovirus/Enterovirus was found as the most common underlying viral etiology (23.4%). The sepsis prevalence was higher among patients with associated comorbidities (45%) and decompensated cirrhosis (84%). On multi-variable analysis, no factor was found independently associated with sepsis-related mortality. CONCLUSION This study underlines the importance of isolated viral etiology in causation of sepsis among liver disease patients. Patients with comorbidities, older age and decompensated cirrhosis are at an increased risk of developing sepsis and are associated with poorer outcomes. Accurate and timely identification of the viral etiology in sepsis would prevent the misuse of antibiotics and improve overall patient care.

Abstract
A 3-year-old male with X-linked lymphoproliferative syndrome type 1 underwent an unrelated umbilical cord blood transplant (UUCBT). The week prior to transplant the patient tested positive for adenovirus (HAdV) with a viral load of <190 copies/mL and was started on cidofovir. UUCBT proceeded as scheduled, and the patient engrafted on day +19. The patient's HAdV load in serum continued to rise with resulting hepatic dysfunction, despite ongoing therapy with cidofovir and HAdV specific T-cell infusions. The patient died 6 months after transplantation having never cleared the virus. Next generation whole genome sequencing and sequence data analyses identified an intertypic recombinant HAdV-C P1H2F2 closely related (99.6% similarity) to genotype C108 in the isolates from three blood specimens obtained during the last week of life. Incidentally, the de novo assembly strategy enabled the detection of an adeno-associated virus type 2 (AAV2) genome in the DNA purified from the plasma isolates. Proteotyping analysis revealed minor differences in the predicted amino acid sequences for E1A, E1B 19K, E1B 55K, DNA polymerase, penton base, and fiber. None of the mutations previously described for HAdV-C5 variants resistant to cidofovir were identified. In silico restriction enzyme analysis revealed a distinct Sac I profile for the identified virus, supporting its designation as a C108 variant.

Abstract
Viral conjunctivitis is one of the most common acute eye diseases. The fall and winter months are known to be the main season for viral infections which is also reflected in the ophthalmological outpatient clinics. Viral conjunctivitis is often accompanied by symptoms of the upper and lower respiratory tract, fever, chills, arthralgia or skin lesions. The spectrum of pathogens comprises DNA viruses such as Adeno-, Herpes simplex and Molluscum contagiosum as well as RNA viruses. Symptoms caused by pandemic pathogens such as SARS-CoV-2 and mpox viruses can also cause ocular manifestation. Viral conjunctivitis is often self-limiting leaving no residual symptoms, however an ophthalmologist should be consulted if there are inflammatory symptoms of the anterior eye accompanied by visual disturbance. It is particularly important to recognize the affection of corneal or even intraocular structures early to initiate an adequate and effective therapy. Affection of the cornea, vitreus or retina can result in temporary or permanent impairment of the field of vision and visual acuity. The diagnosis is usually made without further tests on the basis of the typical clinical presentation. Rapid tests or PCR diagnostics are also available for confirmation. In most patients the treatment is symptomatically with artificial tears and antibiotic eye drops in cases accompanied by secondary bacterial infections, not prophylactically. If the cornea or other ocular structures are affected by certain viruses, local as well as systemic virostatic therapy is initiated. The most important prophylactic measure is meticulous and consistent hygiene.

Abstract
Adenoviruses (AdVs) cause infections in humans that range from mild to severe, and can cause outbreaks particularly in close contact settings. Several human AdV types have been identified, which can cause a wide array of clinical manifestations. AdV types 4 and 7 (AdV-4 and AdV-7), which are among the most commonly circulating types in the United States, are known to cause acute respiratory disease that can result in hospitalization and rarely, death. Currently, the only vaccines approved for use in humans are live virus vaccines against AdV-4 and AdV-7, though these vaccines are only authorized for use in U.S. military personnel. While they are efficacious, use of these live virus vaccines carries considerable risks of vaccine-associated viral shedding and recombination. Here, we present an alternative vaccination strategy against AdV-7 using the virus-like particle platform (AdVLP-7). We describe the production of stable recombinant AdVLP-7, and demonstrate that AdVLP-7 is structurally analogous to wild-type AdV-7 virions (WT AdV-7). Preclinical immunogenicity studies in mice show that AdVLP-7 elicits a potent humoral immune response, comparable to that observed in mice immunized with WT AdV-7. Specifically, AdVLP-7 induces high titers of antibodies against AdV-7-specific antigens that can effectively neutralize AdV-7.

Abstract
Adenovirus pneumonia is common in pediatric upper respiratory tract infection, which is comparatively easy to develop into severe cases and has a high mortality rate with many influential sequelae. As for pathogenesis, adenoviruses can directly damage target cells and activate the immune response to varying degrees. Early clinical recognition depends on patients' symptoms and laboratory tests, including those under 2 years old, dyspnea with systemic toxic symptoms, atelectasis or emphysema in CT image, decreased leukocytes, and significantly increased C-reaction protein (CRP) and procalcitonin (PCT), indicating the possibility of severe cases. Until now, there is no specific drug for adenovirus pneumonia, so in clinical practice, current treatment comprises antiviral drugs, respiratory support and bronchoscopy, immunomodulatory therapy, and blood purification. Additionally, post-infectious bronchiolitis obliterans (PIBO), hemophagocytic syndrome, and death should be carefully noted. Independent risk factors associated with the development of PIBO are invasive mechanical ventilation, intravenous steroid use, duration of fever, and male gender. Meanwhile, hypoxemia, hypercapnia, invasive mechanical ventilation, and low serum albumin levels are related to death. Among these, viral load and serological identification are not only "gold standard" for adenovirus pneumonia, but are also related to the severity and prognosis. Here, we discuss the progress of pathogenesis, early recognition, therapy, and risk factors for poor outcomes regarding severe pediatric adenovirus pneumonia.

Seasonal Trends in the Prevalence and Incidence of Viral Encephalitis in Korea (2015-2019). J Clin Med 2023; 12:jcm12052003. Abstract
Viral infections are a common cause of encephalitis. This study investigated the relationship between the incidence of encephalitis and that of respiratory and enteric viral infections in all age groups from 2015 to 2019, using the Health Insurance Review and Assessment (HIRA) Open Access Big Data Platform. We identified monthly incidence patterns and seasonal trends using the autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA). The Granger causality test was used to analyze correlations between encephalitis incidence and the positive detection rate (PDR) at 1-month intervals. A total of 42,775 patients were diagnosed with encephalitis during the study period. The incidence of encephalitis was highest in the winter (26.8%). The PDRs for respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV) and coronavirus (HCoV) were associated with the trend in encephalitis diagnosis in all age groups, with a 1-month lag period. In addition, an association with norovirus was observed in patients aged over 20 years, and with influenza virus (IFV) in patients aged over 60 years. This study found that HRSV, HCoV, IFV, and norovirus tended to precede encephalitis by 1 month. Further research is required to confirm the association between these viruses and encephalitis.
