Abstract
BACKGROUND Functional constipation is prevalent among older people. It has major effects on the quality of life of them, as well as the high costs of treatment. This study investigated functional constipation and risk factors affecting older people living in Shahreza, Iran. MATERIALS AND METHODS This cross-sectional study was performed on 200 older people in Shahreza. They were selected by simple random sampling. We used the Rome III Criteria, the Elderly Physical Activity Questionnaire (PASE), and related questions from the SIB system (integrated health system). After completing the questionnaires, the data were analyzed using the mean and standard deviation, Chi-square test, independent-samples t-test, Fisher's exact test, and Mann-Whitney test. RESULTS The prevalence of functional constipation was 45%. There are significant relationships between functional constipation with dental problems (P = 0.02), intake of fluid (P = 0.001), fruits (P = 0.001), and vegetables (P < 0.001), polypharmacy (P = 0.003), and antidepressants (P = 0.008), history of colon (P = 0.003) and anal (P = 0.001) diseases, stroke or mobility disabilities (P = 0.002), the level of physical activity (P = 0.002), and gender (P = 0.04) in older people living in Shahreza. CONCLUSIONS According to the high prevalence of functional constipation in the studied older people, it is necessary to focus on controlling risk factors and planning to prevent the destructive effects of social restrictions on older people during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/PURPOSE Gastrointestinal (GI) dysmotility is categorized by muscle or nerve dysfunctions in any portion of the GI tract, which leads to abnormalities in GI motor and sensory function. Symptoms may vary depending on the organ affected and can be debilitating. Treatment usually involves diet and lifestyle changes. Pharmacotherapy is limited in effectiveness with various side effects. Transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TES), a noninvasive, needleless technique that provides electrical stimulation using cutaneous non-needle electrodes, has become increasingly popular. It has been shown to be beneficial in treating GI motility disorders. METHODS This review paper navigates through the different TES techniques, including transcutaneous peripheral nerve (vagal/sacral/tibial nerves) electrical stimulation, transcutaneous electrical acustimulation (stimulation via acupuncture point), transcutaneous interferential current therapy, and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. KEY RESULTS As we delve deeper, we explore the promising effects of TES on dysphagia, gastroesophageal reflux disease, functional dyspepsia, gastroparesis, postoperative ileus, constipation, and irritable bowel syndrome. The literature at hand speaks volumes about the therapeutic prowess of this noninvasive technique. CONCLUSION & INFERENCES The time is ripe to evaluate further the full therapeutic potential of TES, a noninvasive, nonpharmaceutical, nonsurgical, and home-based self-administrative technique in managing GI motility disorders.

Abstract
Objective: Chemotherapy-induced constipation (CIC) adversely affects the quality of life of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. This study aimed to investigate the clinical effects of transcutaneous acupoint electrical stimulation (TAES) on CIC. Methods: Sixty NSCLC patients who received chemotherapy at Hunan Cancer Hospital, Changsha, China, were assigned to the TAES (n = 30) or control (n = 30) group using Research Randomizer. In the TAES group, four acupoints, namely Tianshu, Quchi, Zusanli, and Shangjuxu, were stimulated six times a week, lasting for 4 weeks, while the control group received the usual care. The Bristol Stool Form Scale (BSFS) and the Constipation Assessment Scale (CAS) were used. Results: Both the BSFS and CAS scores for the experimental group were significantly higher than that for the control group (P = 0.004 and P < 0.001 separately). Conclusions: TAES was effective for alleviating constipation in NSCLC patients receiving chemotherapy and was a safe and practical nursing intervention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Managing chronic constipation is challenging as patients frequently remain dissatisfied with laxative treatments. Novel studies using transabdominal electrical interferential therapy in children have shown benefit but there are inadequate adult studies. AIM To examine the effects of transabdominal interferential stimulation on bowel symptoms and quality of life in women with refractory constipation. METHODS In a single-blind, randomised, sham-controlled pilot study, women aged ≥18 years with refractory constipation were randomised to receive interferential stimulation (with crossing of electric currents) or a novel sham stimulation (with no crossing of currents) for 1 hour a day for 6 weeks. Primary outcome was the number of patients with ≥3 spontaneous bowel movements/week. Secondary endpoints included change in PAC-SYM (Patient Assessment of Constipation-SYMptoms), PAC-QOL (Patient Assessment of Constipation-Quality of Life) and an overall symptom severity score (measured at baseline, mid time point of stimulation, end of treatment and 3 months after cessation of treatment). RESULTS Interferential therapy (n = 17) met the primary outcome in 9(53%) compared with 2(12%) with sham therapy (n = 16) (P = 0.02). Interferential therapy resulted in reductions in PAC-SYM (P = 0.03) and overall symptom scores (P = 0.05). Laxative use more than halved in 66% with interferential therapy compared with 14% with sham therapy (P = 0.01). Significant improvements in symptom outcomes were maintained at 3 months. There were no treatment-related adverse effects. CONCLUSION Transabdominal interferential electrical stimulation is effective in reducing constipation in adult women. Three months after therapy, response is maintained and quality of life improved. Not allowing currents to cross intra-abdominally was an effective placebo. Abstract
Chronic constipation is a common symptom that regularly affects the quality of life of adult patients. Its treatment is mainly based on dietary rules, laxative drugs, perineal rehabilitation and surgical treatment. The French National Society of Coloproctology offers clinical practice recommendations on the basis of the data in the current literature, including those on recently developed treatments. Most are noninvasive, and the main concepts include the following: stimulant laxatives are now considered safe drugs and can be more easily prescribed as a second-line treatment; biofeedback therapy remains the gold standard for the treatment of anorectal dyssynergia that is resistant to medical treatment; transanal irrigation is the second-line treatment of choice in patients with neurological diseases, but it may also be proposed for patients without neurological diseases; and although interferential therapy may be a new promising treatment, it needs further evaluation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Functional constipation is a common condition in children. We assessed the effectiveness of combined interferential (IF) electrical stimulation and pelvic floor muscle (PFM) exercises on functional constipation in children. METHODS We conducted a single-center, double-blind randomized clinical trial study during 2014-2017 in Tehran, Iran. Ninety children, aged 5-13 years, who fulfilled Rome III criteria were enrolled and randomly assigned into two treatment groups. Case group (n=45) underwent IF electrical stimulation and PFM exercises, whereas the control group (n=45) received PFM exercises plus sham stimulation. A complete bowel habit diary (with concerning data on the frequency of defecation per week, stool form, and the number of fecal soiling episodes), a constipation score questionnaire, and a visual pain score were recorded before, after the treatment and 6 months later for all participants. In addition, children in both groups were assessed with a constipation-related quality-of-life questionnaire before, after the end of treatment sessions, and 6 months after the treatment. RESULTS Treatment success was achieved for 88.4% of children in the case group compared with 43.2% of children in the control group after the treatment (P<0.003). The median constipation score was reduced in both groups, with the cases having significantly lower scores after the treatment (4 vs. 8, P<0.000). Stool form normalized in 75.6% of the cases and 45.5% of the controls after the treatment (P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS Our results showed that using IF electrical stimulation as an adjuvant therapy to the medical and rehabilitation programs significantly boosts the effects of treatment among these patients.

Abstract
The concept of therapeutic percutaneous neuromodulation has, until recently, been limited by the ability to penetrate deeply enough to stimulate internal organs. By utilizing 2 medium frequency, slightly out of phase electrical currents passing diagonally through the abdomen, a third, low frequency current is created at the point of bisection. This interferential current appears to stimulate nerve fibers in the target organs and may have a therapeutic action. The aim of the study is to review the use of transcutaneous interferential electrical stimulation with a focus on its application in gastroenterology, particularly in motility disorders. Studies involving use of interferential current therapy were searched from Medline, PubMed, and Scopus databases, and articles pertaining to history, its application and all those treating abdominal and gastrointestinal disorders were retrieved. Seventeen studies were identified, 13 involved children only. Eleven of these were randomised controlled trials (3 in adults). Four trials were from the one center, where each paper reported on different outcomes such as soiling, defecation frequency, quality of life, and colon transit studies from the one pool of children. All studies found statistically significant improvement in symptom reduction. However, weaknesses in study design were apparent in some. In particular, finding an adequate placebo to interferential current therapy has been difficult. Interferential current therapy shows potential as a novel, non-pharmacological and economical means of treating gastrointestinal dysfunction such as constipation. More studies are needed particularly in the adult population. However, the design of a suitable placebo is challenging.

Abstract
Introduction. Opioid-induced constipation (OIC) is a principal complication secondary to analgesic therapy for cancer pain patients who suffer moderate to severe pain. In this study, we observe the efficacy and safety of transcutaneous acupoint interferential current (IFC) stimulation in those patients with OIC. Methods. A total of 198 patients were randomly allocated to the IFC group and control group in a 1:1 ratio. Finally, 98 patients in the IFC group received 14 sessions administered over 2 weeks, whereas 100 patients in the control group took lactulose orally during the same period. Observation items were documented at management stage and at follow-up stage according to Cleveland Constipation Scales (CCS), pain Numeric Rating Scales (NRS) and Patient Assessment of Constipation Quality of Life (PAC-QoL). Results. The total curative effects of the IFC group and the control group were indistinguishable (76.5% vs 70.0%, P = .299). Regarding CCS and PAC-QoL scores, no significant difference was observed between the 2 groups during the management time and at the follow-up stage of week 3 (P > .05, respectively), but groups were distinguished at the follow-up stage of week 4 (P < .001 and P = .031, respectively). The pain NRS decreased significantly at management stage week 2 and follow-up stage week 3 and week 4 (P = .013, P = .041, P = .011, respectively). Conclusions. Transcutaneous acupoint IFC therapy over acupoints of Tianshu (ST25) and Zhongwan (RN12) may improve constipation and quality of life in cancer patients receiving opiates; further studies are worthwhile.
