Abstract
Rice straw management, along with the prevalent practice of residue burning, poses multifaceted challenges with substantial environmental and human health implications. After harvest, a considerable amount of straw is left behind, often disposed of through burning, releasing several pollutants into the environment. Carbon dioxide (CO2) dominates at 70%, accompanied by methane (CH4) at 0.66%, carbon monoxide (CO) at 7%, and nitrous oxide (N2O) at 2.09%. This process further compounds issues by depleting soil nutrients like nitrogen and organic matter. This review focuses on strategies for residue management and using straw as value-added by-products. We address research gaps and offer potential recommendations for rice straw management using economically feasible and practical routes. We elaborate that to improve rice straw digestibility, utilization in mushroom cultivation, and other value-added products, low silica (Si) rice varieties must be developed using modern technologies including marker-assisted selection breeding or genome editing. Developing low Si rice could also reduce arsenic uptake by rice, as rice plants use the same transporters for the uptake of both elements. Conversely, silica is also indispensable for quality rice production; hence, optimizing silicon content in rice is worth investigating. More research is required to understand the extent of silicon's effect on the utilization of straw for various purposes. This review also discusses the importance of educating farmers about the straw burning issue and its environmental consequences. We highlight the significance of tailoring rice straw management methods to local suitability, moving away from a universal approach. More extension work is needed to encourage farmers to opt for environmentally and economically sound options for rice straw management. Policy intervention to incentivize farmers and develop technologies for the widespread use of rice straw for various industries and product development could help in the management of rice straw and will also create a circular economy.

Abstract
Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogels were enhanced mechanically through the addition of lignin-rich nanocellulose (LCN), soluble ash (SA) and montmorillonite (MMT) for dye removal. The hybrid hydrogels reinforced with 33.3 wt% of LCN had a 163.0% increase in storage modulus as compared to the PVA/0LCN-33.3SM hydrogel. LCN can be added to the PVA hydrogel to alter its rheological properties. Additionally, hybrid hydrogels were highly efficient in removing methylene blue from wastewater, which was attributed to the synergistic effects of the PVA matrix supporting embedded LCN, MMT, and SA. The adsorption time (0–90 min) showed that the hydrogels containing MMT and SA had high removal efficiency, and the adsorption of methylene blue (MB) by PVA/20LCN-13.3SM was greater than 95.7% at 30°C. It was found that MB efficiency decreased with a high MMT and SA content. Our study provided a new method for the fabrication of polymers-based eco-friendly, low-cost and robust physical hydrogels for the MB removal.

Abstract
The adsorbed ash and lignin contained in waste wheat straw (WWS) have been the essential factors restricting its high-value utilization in biorefinery. Hence, humic acid (HA) and FeCl3 as the additives of hydrothermal pretreatment were applied to simultaneously enhance the removal of lignin and eliminate the acid buffering of ash in WWS, respectively. The results showed that the xylan and lignin removal of WWS pretreated with 10 g/L HA and 20 mM FeCl3 could be efficiently increased from 61.4% to 72.9% and from 14.7% to 38.7%, respectively. The enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency and ethanol yield of WWS were increased this way from 44.4% to 82.7% and from 20.55% to 36.86%, respectively. According to the characterization of WWS, the synergistic interaction between HA and FeCl3 was beneficial to the cellulose accessibility and surface lignin area of WWS changed in positive directions, leading to the improvement of hydrolysis efficiency.

Abstract
The current study heterologously expressed a cutinase from Fusarium verticillioides by Pichia pastoris and investigated its properties and effects on the hydrolysis of rice straw. The optimal pH and temperature for F. verticillioides cutinase were 8.0 and 50 °C, respectively. F. verticillioides cutinase had poor thermal stability and could be inhibited by some metal ions, inhibitors, and detergents (5 mM), including Ni2+, Zn2+, Cu2+, Ca2+, Mn2+, sodium dodecyl sulfate, EDTA, and Tween-20. F. verticillioides cutinase could tolerate 15% methanol and dimethyl sulfoxide but was significantly repressed by 15% ethanol and acetone with 48% and 63% residual activity, respectively. F. verticillioides cutinase could degrade the cuticle of rice straw with palmitic acid and stearic acid as the main products. However, the dissolving sugars released from the rice straw treated with F. verticillioides cutinase were significantly reduced by 29.2 μg/mL compared with the control (107.9 μg/mL). Similarly, the reducing sugars produced from the cellulase hydrolysis of rice straw pretreated with F. verticillioides cutinase were reduced by 63.5 μg/mL relative to the control (253.6 μg/mL). Scanning electron microscopy results showed that numerous tuberculate or warty protrusions were present nearly everywhere on the surface of rice straw treated with F. verticillioides cutinase, and some protrusions even covered and blocked the stomata of the rice straw surface. Current limited data indicate that F. verticillioides cutinase might not be an appropriate choice for improving the utilization of agricultural straws.
