Abstract
The risk of depression is influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. It has been suggested that epigenetic mechanisms may mediate the risk of depression following exposure to adverse life events. Epigenetics encompasses stable alterations in gene expression that are controlled through transcriptional, post-transcriptional, translational, or post-translational processes, including DNA modifications, chromatin remodeling, histone modifications, RNA modifications, and non-coding RNA (ncRNA) regulation, without any changes in the DNA sequence. In this review, we explore recent research advancements in the realm of epigenetics concerning depression. Furthermore, we evaluate the potential of epigenetic changes as diagnostic and therapeutic biomarkers for depression.

Abstract
Alterations in brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression have been suggested to mediate the influence of environmental factors on the emergence of depression through epigenetic modifications. However, research on this subject in the developmental population is lacking and the pathophysiology of adolescent depression remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the alterations in BDNF expression and global DNA methylation in depression among adolescent girls. Thirty female inpatients with the initial diagnosis of depression were assessed before and after the period of antidepressant treatment and compared with thirty age-matched healthy controls. The assessment involved BDNF and proBDNF serum levels, the BDNF gene exon IV promoter methylation, and global DNA methylation. The methylation level in the BDNF gene exon IV promoter was significantly lower in the studied group compared with the control and correlated negatively with the severity of depression. The test distinguished the studied group from the controls with a sensitivity of 37% and specificity of 90%. The differences were no longer present after the period of antidepressant treatment. No differences in the global DNA methylation, BDNF, and proBDNF levels were found. We concluded that decreased methylation in the BDNF exon IV promoter could be considered as a biomarker of a depression state among adolescent girls.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Cognitive impairment is a core feature of bipolar disorder (BD) and major depressive disorder (MDD). Deficits in processing speed (PS) and sustained attention (SA) may be particularly impaired and may underpin a broader profile of deficits, however current knowledge of the nature of these impairments is limited by heterogeneous results in the literature. Few reviews to date have attempted to disentangle sources of heterogeneity to assess the presence and magnitude of impairments in PS and SA in BD and MDD. METHODS One hundred and three studies were reviewed to examine performance in tests of PS and SA in BD (n = 3452) and MDD (n = 5461) compared to healthy controls (n = 8016). Neuropsychological methodology used in the literature was summarised. Data were meta-analysed to assess impairments in PS and SA for each neuropsychological test separately. Subgroup analysis was performed across mood states to investigate sources of heterogeneity. RESULTS Impairments were found across most neuropsychological tests, with small to large effect sizes for BD (range: d = 0.19-0.96) and MDD (range: d = 0.29-0.86). Impairments were present in symptomatic states and euthymia in most cases. Some outcome measures were not impaired in euthymia. Heterogeneity was observed for most neuropsychological tests and remained after separating by mood state. There inadequate data to meta-analyse some outcome measures, particularly for symptomatic groups. CONCLUSION Impairments in PS and SA in BD and MDD can be observed across most neuropsychological tests. Future research should further investigate the nature of these impairments across mood states, controlling for clinical confounds.

Abstract
Depression is a prevalent occurrence among Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients, yet its underlying mechanism remains unclear. Recent investigations have revealed that several pathophysiological changes associated with Alzheimer's disease can lead to mood disorders. These alterations include irregularities in monoamine neurotransmitters, disruptions in glutamatergic synaptic transmission, neuro-inflammation, dysfunction within the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) axis, diminished levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and hippocampal atrophy. This review consolidates research findings from pertinent fields to elucidate the mechanisms underlying depression in Alzheimer's disease, aiming to provide valuable insights for the study of its mechanisms and clinical treatment.

Abstract
AIMS Cigarette smoking is a preventable risk factor for various diseases such as cancer, ischemic stroke, cardiac stroke, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Smoking cessation is of great importance not only for individual smokers but also for social health. Regarding current cessation therapies, the effectiveness of nicotine replacement is limited, and the cost of varenicline medication is considerable. Thus, a method for screening smokers who are responsive to cessation therapy based on the therapeutic effectiveness is required. Peripheral biomarkers reflecting smoking dependence status are necessary to establish a method for achieving effective cessation therapy. METHODS Methylation status of smokers' blood DNA was evaluated focusing on SHATI/NAT8L, an addiction-related gene. Eight CpG sites in SHATI/NAT8L were quantified by pyrosequencing. RESULTS There was no difference in the methylation status of this gene between smokers (n = 129) and non-smokers (n = 129) at all CpG sites. No correlations between the methylation status of SHATI/NAT8L and indicators of smoking dependence were found. CONCLUSIONS Although the present study found no significance in the DNA methylation of SHATI/NAT8L among smokers, the exploration of predictable peripheral biomarkers for the effectiveness of smoking cessation therapy is required.

Abstract
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a disorder of gut-brain interaction, is often comorbid with somatic pain and psychological disorders. Dysregulated signaling of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and its receptor, tropomyosin-related kinase B (TrkB), has been implicated in somatic-psychological symptoms in individuals with IBS. Thus, we investigated the association of 10 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the regulatory 3' untranslated region (UTR) of NTRK2 (TrkB) kinase domain-deficient truncated isoform (TrkB.T1) and the BDNF Val66Met SNP with somatic and psychological symptoms and quality of life in a U.S. cohort (IBS n=464; healthy controls n=156). We found that the homozygous recessive genotype (G/G) of rs2013566 in individuals with IBS is associated with worsened somatic symptoms, including headache, back pain, joint pain, muscle pain, and somatization as well as diminished sleep quality, energy level and overall quality of life. Validation using U.K. BioBank (UKBB) data confirmed the association of rs2013566 with increased likelihood of headache. Several SNPs (rs1627784, rs1624327, rs1147198) showed significant associations with muscle pain in our U.S. cohort. Notably, these SNPs are predominantly located in H3K4Me1-enriched regions, suggesting their enhancer and/or transcription regulation potential. Together, our findings suggest that genetic variation within the 3'UTR region of the TrkB.T1 isoform may contribute to comorbid conditions in individuals with IBS, resulting in a spectrum of somatic and psychological symptoms that may influence their quality of life. These findings advance our understanding of the genetic interaction between BDNF/TrkB pathways and somatic-psychological symptoms in IBS, highlighting the importance of further exploring this interaction for potential clinical applications.

The associations between DNA methylation and depression: A systematic review and meta-analysis. J Affect Disord 2023; 327:439-450. Abstract
BACKGROUND Growing evidence suggests that epigenetic modification is vital in biological processes of depression. Findings from studies exploring the associations between DNA methylation and depression have been inconsistent. METHODS A systematical search of EMBASE, PubMed, Web of Science, and PsycINFO databases was conducted to include studies focusing on the associations between DNA methylation and depression (up to November 1st 2021) according to PRISMA guidelines with registration in PROSPERO (CRD42021288664). RESULTS A total of 47 studies met inclusion criteria and 31 studies were included in the meta-analysis. This meta-analysis found that genes hypermethylation, including BDNF (OR: 1.15, 95%CI: 1.01-1.32, I2 = 90 %), and NR3C1 (OR: 1.43, 95%CI: 1.09-1.87, I2 = 88 %) was associated with increased risk of depression. Significant association of SLC6A4 hypermethylation with depression was only found in the subgroup of using original data (OR: 1.09, 95%CI: 1.01-1.19, I2 = 52 %). BDNF hypermethylation could increase the risk of depression only in the Asian population (OR: 1.18, 95%CI: 1.01-1.40, I2 = 91 %), and significant associations of NR3C1 hypermethylation with depression were found in the group for depressive symptoms (OR: 1.34, 95%CI: 1.08-1.67, I2 = 85 %), but not for depressive disorder (OR: 1.89, 95%CI: 0.54-6.55, I2 = 94 %). LIMITATIONS More studies are needed to explore the factors that might influence the estimates owing to the contextual heterogeneity of the pooling of included studies. CONCLUSIONS It is noted that DNA hypermethylation, namely BDNF and NR3C1, is associated with increased risk of depression. The findings in this study could provide some material evidence for preventing and diagnosing of depression.

Abstract
Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) plays an essential role in neuronal survival, especially in areas responsible for memory and learning. The BDNF Val66Met polymorphism has been described as a cognitive modifier in people with neuropsychiatric disorders. BDNF levels have been found to be low in children with learning disorder (LD). However, Val66Met polymorphism has not been studied before in such children. The aim was to investigate the presence of BDNF val66Met polymorphism in a group of children with specific LD and to verify its impact on their cognitive abilities. The participants in this cross-sectional study (N = 111) were divided into two groups: one for children with LD and the other for neurotypical (NT) ones. Children with LD (N = 72) were diagnosed according to the DSM-5 criteria. Their abilities were evaluated using Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale, dyslexia assessment test, Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities, and phonological awareness test. Genotyping of BDNF Val66Met polymorphism was performed for all participants. The frequency of the Met allele was 26% among children with LD (6 children had homozygous, 26 had heterozygous genotype). The percentage of participants with deficits in reading, writing, and phonemic segmentation was higher in Met allele carriers when compared to non-Met allele carriers in LD group. The frequency of Met allele among NT children was 3.85% (0 homozygous, 3 children had heterozygous genotype) (p = 0.00001). The high frequency of Val66Met polymorphism among children with LD introduces the BDNF gene as a genetic modifier of learning performance in some children who manifest specific learning disorder (developmental dyslexia).

Abstract
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a debilitating psychiatric disorder, the third leading global cause of disability. Regarding aetiopathogenetic mechanisms involved in the onset of depressive disorders, the interaction between genetic vulnerability traits and environmental factors is believed to play a major role. Although much is still to be elucidated about the mechanisms through which the environment can interact with genetic background shaping the disease risk, there is a general agreement about a key role of epigenetic marking. In this narrative review, we focused on the association between changes in DNA methylation patterns and MDD or depressive-like phenotype in animal models, as well as mechanisms of response to antidepressant drugs. We discussed studies presenting DNA methylation changes at specific genes of interest and profiling analyses in both patients and animal models of depression. Overall, we collected evidence showing that DNA methylation could not only be considered as a promising epigenetic biomarker of pathology but could also help in predicting antidepressant treatment efficacy. Finally, we discussed the hypothesis that specific changes in DNA methylation signature could play a role in aetiopathogenetic processes as well as in the induction of antidepressant effect.

Abstract
The development of information technology has a profound impact on the development of education. The integration of information technology into the teaching of professional courses has changed not only teaching methods and means, but more importantly, the teaching philosophy, teaching organization, and teaching evaluation are supported by information technology. Changes and progress have also been made. Piano improvisational accompaniment is an indispensable and important course in the teaching of music majors in colleges and universities. Relying on the information-based teaching environment and means, systematically designing piano impromptu accompaniment teaching for music performance majors to improve the effectiveness of teaching is a new exploration in the education and teaching reform of the current higher vocational music performance talent training courses. This study analyzes and studies the problems existing in the current teaching of piano improvisation accompaniment in colleges and universities and proposes the feasible strategies of piano improvisation accompaniment teaching in a targeted manner, to provide reference and guidance for the majority of educators.
