Pheochromocytomas and paraganglionomas are rare neuroendocrine tumors. The multisystem effects of these tumors on the pregnant woman and fetus, the timing of surgery in relation to the pregnancy, and the pharmacological treatment have several anesthetic implications. Case reports on elective cesarean section followed by postpartum resection of the tumor are scarce. A case is presented of a 31-year-old nulliparous female where an antenatal diagnosis of a paraganglionoma was made at 19 weeks gestation for whom an elective cesarean section was performed at 31 weeks gestation under graded lumbar epidural anesthesia, followed by an elective open surgical removal of the tumor six weeks postpartum.

Pheochromocytoma disguised as gestational hypertensive disease during pregnancy: A case report

Pheochromocytoma is often diagnosed prior to pregnancy. Sometimes, the disease may be diagnosed for the first-time during pregnancy masking itself as a hypertensive disease in pregnancy. Early diagnosis and timely, appropriate management reduce possible maternal and fetal complications. We identified a case of pheochromocytoma during pregnancy misdiagnosed as preeclampsia.

Pheochromocytoma-Induced Tako-Tsubo Syndrome: An Uncommon Presentation

BACKGROUND

A pheochromocytoma-induced tako-tsubo syndrome is a life-threatening complication of the rare endocrinological disease. The association between the two syndromes is known, though seldom reported in literature, but the categorization is still debated.

CASE REPORT

In this article, we provide two examples of clinical presentation of this rare condition, its diagnosis using point-of-care ultrasound, its management in the emergency department, and finally, a literature review. WHY SHOULD AN EMERGENCY PHYSICIAN BE AWARE OF THIS?: In case of a tako-tsubo syndrome-like myocardial dysfunction in a patient with unknown medical history, or recorded hypertensive or tachycardic peaks, a point-of-care ultrasound scan extended to the kidneys could help evaluate for a reversible underlying trigger cause such as pheochromocytoma.
