Comparison of models for estimating methane emission factor for enteric fermentation of growing-finishing Hanwoo steers

Effects of different feeding systems on ruminal fermentation, digestibility, methane emissions, and microbiota of Hanwoo steers

This study evaluates how different feeding systems impact ruminal fermentation, methane production, and microbiota of Hanwoo steers native to Korea. In a replicated 2 × 2 crossover design over 29 days per period, eight Hanwoo steers (507.1 ± 67.4 kg) were fed twice daily using a separate feeding (SF) system comprising separate concentrate mix and forage or total mixed rations (TMR) in a 15:85 ratio. The TMR-feeding group exhibited a considerable neutral detergent fiber digestibility increase than the SF group. However, ruminal fermentation parameters and methane production did not differ between two feeding strategies. In addition, TMR-fed steers expressed elevated Prevotellaceae family, Christensenellaceae R-7 group, and an unidentified Veillonellaceae family genus abundance in their rumen, whereas SF-fed steers were rich in the Rikenellaceae RC9 gut group, Erysipelotrichaceae UCG-004, and Succinivibrio. Through linear regression modeling, positive correlations were observed between the Shannon Diversity Index and the SF group's dry matter intake and methane production. Although feeding systems do not affect methane production, they can alter ruminal microbes. These results may guide future feeding system investigations or ruminal microbiota manipulations as a methane-mitigation practice examining different feed ingredients.

Breed and Season-Specific Methane Conversion Factors Influence Methane Emission Factor for Enteric Methane of Dairy Steers

This study determined the breed and the season-specific methane (CH4) conversion factor (Ym) and the emission factor (EF) for the enteric CH4 of dairy steers. The Ym values for Holstein and Jersey steers at different seasons were calculated using the IPCC 2006 equations by incorporating the input and/or output value of the chemical composition of feed, methane production, methane yield, dry matter intake, and methane energy emission. EFs were categorized into five types depending on the 2019 refinement to the IPCC 2006 Tier 2 equations used. EFA was calculated from Equation 10.21A (New), while other EFs were estimated from the Equation 10.21 which were designated according to the gross energy intake (GEI) and Ym as EFB (GEIi and Ym), EFC (GEIii and Ym), EFD (GEIii and Ym (6.3)), and EFE (GEIii and Ym (4.0)). The calculated overall Ym for Holstein and Jersey steers were 4.90 and 7.49, while the recorded EF of group EFA were 56.44 and 67.42 kg CH4/head/year for Holstein and Jersey steers, respectively. For Holstein steers, EFD was overestimated (75.91 vs. 48.20~58.15), while in Jersey steers, the EFF underestimated the EF (kg CH4/head/year) compared to others (40.15 vs. 63.24~73.28) (p < 0.05). Mixed analysis revealed that the breed influenced EFs of all the EF groups, while the season, and the breed × the season influenced EFs of group EFC, EFD, and EFF. The overall results recommended using the breed-specific Ym for the estimation of the EF for enteric methane in dairy steers.

Methane emission factors and carbon fluxes from enteric fermentation in cattle of Nepal Himalaya

This study presents a first estimate of the country-specific enteric methane (CH₄) emission factors (EFs) and the net CH₄ fluxes for the local and improved cattle breeds (LCB and ICB) in Nepal using the IPCC Tier 2 methodology. The country-specific herd structure, morphological and feed characteristics data of cattle were collected from the field survey. In LCB, adult males had the highest mean live body weights (BWs) ranging from 222 ± 42 kg in the Hill to 237 ± 36 kg in the Plain region, while for improved cattle, adult females had the highest BW of 334 ± 45 kg in the Hill to 308 ± 38 kg in the Plain regions. Weight gains of ICB were higher than the LCB. Local calves gained BWs of 97 ± 20 g day^-1, while improved calves gained a weight of 202 ± 41 g day^-1. The CH₄ EFs ranged from 13 ± 3 to 46 ± 9 kg CH₄ head^-1 yr^-1 for different age-groups of the LCB, while for the ICB, the EFs ranged from 14 ± 3 to 75 ± 15 kg CH₄ head^-1 yr^-1. Overall, the EFs were 33 ± 7 and 46 ± 9 kg CH₄ head^-1 yr^-1 for LCB and ICB, respectively. The estimated enteric EFs of cattle in the Hill and Plain regions were not statistically different (p > 0.05), but a significant difference existed between the breeds (LCB and ICB; p < 0.05). The net CH₄ flux was 254 ± 51 Gg yr^-1 from enteric fermentation in cattle of Nepal using the country-specific EFs, about 15% higher than using the default EFs (221 ± 66 Gg yr^-1). We underline that the emission estimation, deploying the country-specific EFs, will be more accurate, contributing to reduce the uncertainties in the national GHG inventories and supporting the mitigation actions.

Estimation of Greenhouse Gas Emission from Hanwoo (Korean Native Cattle) Manure Management Systems

The agricultural sector is considered one of the major sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions globally. The livestock industry as a significant contributor, is accounting for about 18% of GHG emissions measured in carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent from agricultural practices. Depending on farming practices and climatic conditions, GHGs such as methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from livestock agriculture can vary significantly. Country-specific emission factors are, therefore, needed for a precise estimation of GHG emissions and to avoid uncertainties. This study was aimed at estimating the CH4 and N2O emission fluxes from Hanwoo (the most famous and popular Korean native cattle) manure management systems. CH4 and N2O emission fluxes from litter in the Hanwoo cattle barn and composting lot were monitored and calculated for 52 weeks using the dynamic chamber method. The calculated monthly average fluxes of CH4 and N2O from litter in the cattle barn ranged from 0.0 to 30.0 ± 13.7 and 0.896 ± 0.557 to 2.925 ± 2.853 μg/m2 s, respectively during the whole measurement period. While during the composting period, the monthly average of CH4 and N2O emission fluxes were varied from 1.449 ± 0.783 to 86.930 ± 19.092 and 0.511 ± 0.410 to 2.629 ± 1.105 μg/m2 s, respectively. The calculated emission fluxes of CH4 and N2O from manure management systems in this study were almost 5.4 and 2.1 times, respectively higher than the values reported for the Asian, South and North American countries in the 2006 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories. Overall, this study initiates the process along with signifies the importance of developing country-specific GHG inventories for the effective reduction of GHG emissions from the livestock sector in Korea.
