Anthropometric and metabolic indices in assessment of type and severity of dyslipidemia

Pre-treatment risk predictors of valproic acid-induced dyslipidemia in pediatric patients with epilepsy

Background: Valproic acid (VPA) stands as one of the most frequently prescribed medications in children with newly diagnosed epilepsy. Despite its infrequent adverse effects within therapeutic range, prolonged VPA usage may result in metabolic disturbances including insulin resistance and dyslipidemia. These metabolic dysregulations in childhood are notably linked to heightened cardiovascular risk in adulthood. Therefore, identification and effective management of dyslipidemia in children hold paramount significance. Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, we explored the potential associations between physiological factors, medication situation, biochemical parameters before the first dose of VPA (baseline) and VPA-induced dyslipidemia (VID) in pediatric patients. Binary logistic regression was utilized to construct a predictive model for blood lipid disorders, aiming to identify independent pre-treatment risk factors. Additionally, The Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve was used to evaluate the performance of the model. Results: Through binary logistic regression analysis, we identified for the first time that direct bilirubin (DBIL) (odds ratios (OR) = 0.511, p = 0.01), duration of medication (OR = 0.357, p = 0.009), serum albumin (ALB) (OR = 0.913, p = 0.043), BMI (OR = 1.140, p = 0.045), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) (OR = 1.038, p = 0.026) at baseline were independent risk factors for VID in pediatric patients with epilepsy. Notably, the predictive ability of DBIL (AUC = 0.690, p < 0.0001) surpassed that of other individual factors. Furthermore, when combined into a predictive model, incorporating all five risk factors, the predictive capacity significantly increased (AUC = 0.777, p < 0.0001), enabling the forecast of 77.7% of dyslipidemia events. Conclusion: DBIL emerges as the most potent predictor, and in conjunction with the other four factors, can effectively forecast VID in pediatric patients with epilepsy. This insight can guide the formulation of individualized strategies for the clinical administration of VPA in children.

Development and validation of a simple-to-use nomogram for self-screening the risk of dyslipidemia

This study aimed to help healthy adults achieve self-screening by analyzing the quantitative relationship between body composition index measurements (BMI, waist-to-hip ratio, etc.) and dyslipidemia and establishing a logical risk prediction model for dyslipidemia. We performed a cross-sectional study and collected relevant data from 1115 adults between November 2019 and August 2020. The least absolute shrinkage selection operator (LASSO) regression analysis was performed to select the best predictor variables, and multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to construct the prediction model. In this study, a graphic tool including 10 predictor variables (a "nomogram," see the precise definition in the text) was constructed to predict the risk of dyslipidemia in healthy adults. A calibration diagram, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, and decision curve analysis (DCA) were used to verify the model's utility. Our proposed dyslipidemia nomogram showed good discriminative ability with a C-index of 0.737 (95% confidence interval, 0.70-0.773). In the internal validation, a high C-index value of 0.718 was achieved. DCA showed a dyslipidemia threshold probability of 2-45%, proving the value of the nomogram for clinical application for dyslipidemia. This nomogram may be useful for self-screening the risk of dyslipidemia in healthy adults.

Relationship between anthropometric indices and Mizaj (temperament) in Persian medicine

Background

The process of diagnosis and treatment in Persian medicine (PM) are based on the concept of Mizaj (temperament). Among the indices of Mizaj determination, anthropometric indices are less influenceable regarding age change and other environmental factors. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between anthropometric indices and Mizaj.

Methods

Four PM experts determined the Mizaj of 121 participants. Those who had ≥70% agreement in their Mizaj determination by the experts were selected and their anthropometric indices were measured. The best cutoff point of each index and its relationship with the defined Mizaj were extracted using Receiver Operative Characteristic Curve and Binary Logistic Regression.

Results

52 out of 121 participants entered the main study. The warm-Mizaj people had larger dimensions in height, shoulder, chest, palm and sole width, and head height. Cold-Mizaj people had smaller dimensions in weight, height, shoulder, chest and head. High levels of BMI, chest depth and head dimensions had the highest correlation with the wet Mizaj and lower dimensions of these indices had the highest correlation with the dry Mizaj.

Conclusion

Among the anthropometric indices, chest, palm, sole dimensions, head height and weight had the highest correlation with warmness/coldness and BMI, head width and chest dimensions had the highest correlation with wetness/dryness. The BMI which is more closely related to the soft tissue, only correlates with the wetness/dryness, while, bone dimensions are associated with warmness/coldness. Further studies are needed to metricize the anthropometric indices for Mizaj determination.

Development and validation of a carotid atherosclerosis risk prediction model based on a Chinese population

Purpose

This study aimed to identify independent risk factors for carotid atherosclerosis (CAS) and construct and validate a CAS risk prediction model based on the Chinese population.

Methods

This retrospective study included 4,570 Chinese adults who underwent health checkups (including carotid ultrasound) at the Zhenhai Lianhua Hospital, Ningbo, China, in 2020. All the participants were randomly assigned to the training and validation sets at a ratio of 7:3. Independent risk factors associated with CAS were identified using multivariate logistic regression analysis. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator combined with 10-fold cross-validation were screened for characteristic variables, and nomograms were plotted to demonstrate the risk prediction model. C-index and receiver operating characteristic curves, calibration plots, and decision curve analysis (DCA) were used to evaluate the risk model’s discrimination, calibration, and clinical applicability.

Results

Age, body mass index, diastolic blood pressure, white blood cell count, mean platelet volume, alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase, and gamma-glutamyl transferase were identified as independent risk factors for CAS. In the training, internal validation, and external validation sets, the risk model showed good discriminatory power with C-indices of 0.961 (0.953–0.969), 0.953 (0.939–0.967), and 0.930 (0.920–0.940), respectively, and excellent calibration. The results of DCA showed that the prediction model could be beneficial when the risk threshold probabilities were 1–100% in all sets. Finally, a network computer (dynamic nomogram) was developed to facilitate the physicians’ clinical operations. The website is https://nbuhgq.shinyapps.io/DynNomapp/.

Conclusion

The development of risk models contributes to the early identification and prevention of CAS, which is important for preventing and reducing adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events.

The association of a body shape index and visceral adiposity index with neurotrophic, hormonal and metabolic factors among apparently healthy women: a cross-sectional analysis

Purpose

A body shape index (ABSI) and visceral; adiposity index (VAI) can reflect some cardio-metabolic risk factors in the population. To the best of our knowledge, there are no previous studies conducted on the assessment of the association between neurotrophic factors, Ghrelin and Obestatin with ABSI and VAI. We aimed to investigate this association among apparently healthy women.

Methods

Ninety apparently healthy women were recruited in the present study. All participants were in need of dietary intervention for weight loss and participated in the study before receiving any intervention. Dietary, anthropometric, physical activity, stress level and biochemical assessments, as well as blood pressure measurements were done for all participants.

Results

Women in the highest tertile of ABSI had significantly lower SBP compared to the lowest ABSI tertile. Women who were in the highest tertile of VAI had significantly lower serum Obestatin levels compared to the first and second tertiles in both crude and adjusted comparisons. Serum NGF, Obestatin and Ghrelin levels were significantly lower in the highest tertile of VAI compared to the lowest tertile in both crude and adjusted comparisons. HOMA-IR, serum insulin, LDL-C, TG and TC were significantly higher in the highest tertile of VAI compared to the lowest tertile. QUICKI in the highest tertiles were significantly lower than the first tertile in adjusted model.

Conclusion

This evidence can be useful for researchers in applying appropriate anthropometric indices regarding different populations with multifactorial metabolic complications. The current findings need approving by prospective population study and also clinical trial researches.

Novel and traditional anthropometric indices for identifying metabolic syndrome in non-overweight/obese adults

Background

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) in non-overweight/obese people is insidiously associated with cardiovascular disease. Novel anthropometric indices can reflect central obesity better than the traditional anthropometric indices. Therefore, we hypothesize that these newly developed anthropometric indices can better identify MetS in non-overweight/obese people than conventional indices.

Methods

Cross-sectional data of sociodemographic, biochemical and anthropometric indices were collected from 2916 non-overweight/obese Chinese people. A body shape index (ABSI), body roundness index (BRI), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), weight-adjusted-waist index (WWI) and abdominal volume index (AVI) were calculated. Partial correlation analysis was used to clarify the correlation between anthropometric indices and MetS variables. Binary logistic regression analysis was applied to assess the association between anthropometric indices and MetS and its components. Receiver-operating characteristic curve was used to identify the diagnostic ability of anthropometric indices for MetS and its components. The area under curve (AUC) difference between WHtR and each new anthropometric index was compared in pairs.

Results

After adjusting for covariates, AVI had the optimal ability of identifying MetS (AUC: 0.743 for male, 0.819 for female) and the strongest correlation with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (coe: − 0.227 for male, − 0.207 for female) and the highest odds rations (OR) with low HDL-C group (male: OR = 1.37, female: OR = 1.55). The WHtR was comparable to BRI in assessing MetS (AUC: 0.739 for male, 0.817 for female). WHtR or BRI could also well identify hypertension (AUC: 0.602 for male, 0.688 for female) and dysglycemia (AUC: 0.669 for male, 0.713 for female) and female’s high triglyceride level (AUC 0.712). The recognition ability of the two was equivalent. The ability of ABSI and WWI to identify MetS was weak.

Conclusions

AVI is the optimal anthropometric indices to identify MetS in non-overweight/obese Chinese adults. BRI and WHtR can also be considered as discriminators, while ABSI and WWI are weak discriminators. WHtR is easy to measure. So, it is recommended as an early preliminary screening method for the MetS in non-overweight/obese people.

Evaluation of Eight Anthropometric Indices for Identification of Metabolic Syndrome in Adults with Diabetes

PURPOSE

Several previous reports have highlighted the association between adiposity and risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS). Although it is necessary to identify which adiposity indices are best suited to identify MetS, no such study has been completed in diabetic patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of eight anthropometric indices to identify MetS in diabetic, middle-aged and elderly Chinese patients.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

A cross-sectional study was conducted in 906 type 2 diabetic patients in Guangxi.

RESULTS

The highest odds ratios for the identification of MetS were identified with CUN-BAE (OR = 28.306). The largest areas under the curve (AUCs) were observed for WHtR and BRI in men aged 40-59; CUN-BAE in men aged 60 and over; WHtR, BRI, and TyG in women aged 40-59; and BMI for women aged 60 and over. The weakest indicator for the screening of MetS in type 2 diabetes was the ABSI.

CONCLUSION

The most effective anthropometric indicator for the identification of MetS varied across sex and age subgroups.

Effectiveness of body roundness index in predicting metabolic syndrome: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Body roundness index (BRI) is a new anthropometric index developed to predict both body fat and the percentage of visceral adipose tissue. Our aim was to investigate whether BRI is superior to traditional anthropometric indices in predicting metabolic syndrome (MetS). This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted using Pubmed, Scopus and Web of Sciences databases. The estimated pooled areas under curve (AUCs) for BRI predicting MetS was higher than body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), body shape index (ABSI) and body adiposity index (BAI), similar to waist circumference (WC) and lower than waist-to-height ratio (WHtR). However, the difference between BRI and BMI, WC and WHtR predicting MetS was statistically non-significant. Similar results were found with the summary receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC-SROC). In addition, the non-Chinese population had pooled AUCs greater than the Chinese population for all indices. Pooled ORs showed that BRI is associated with an increased MetS risk. In conclusion, BRI had good discriminatory power for MetS in adults of both sexes from diverse populations (AUC > 0.7; AUC-SROC>0.7). However, WC and WHtR offer the best performance when screening for MetS, and non-significant differences were found with BRI. In contrast, BRI was superior to BMI, WHR, ABSI and BAI in predicting MetS.

Anthropometric indices and cut-off points in the diagnosis of metabolic disorders

OBJECTIVE

Identifying metabolic disorders at the earliest phase of their development allows for an early intervention and the prevention of serious consequences of diseases. However, it is difficult to determine which of the anthropometric indices of obesity is the best tool for diagnosing metabolic disorders. The aims of this study were to evaluate the usefulness of selected anthropometric indices and to determine optimal cut-off points for the identification of single metabolic disorders that are components of metabolic syndrome (MetS).

DESIGN

Cross-sectional study.

PARTICIPANTS

We analyzed the data of 12,328 participants aged 55.7±5.4 years. All participants were of European descent.

PRIMARY OUTCOME MEASURE

Four MetS components were included: high glucose concentration, high blood triglyceride concentration, low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentration, and elevated blood pressure. The following obesity indices were considered: waist circumference (WC), body mass index (BMI), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), body fat percentage (%BF), Clínica Universidad de Navarra-body adiposity estimator (CUN-BAE), body roundness index (BRI), and a body shape index (ABSI).

RESULTS

The following indices had the highest discriminatory power for the identification of at least one MetS component: CUN-BAE, BMI, and WC in men (AUC = 0.734, 0.728, and 0.728, respectively) and WHtR, CUN-BAE, and WC in women (AUC = 0.715, 0.714, and 0.712, respectively) (p<0.001 for all). The other indices were similarly useful, except for the ABSI.

CONCLUSIONS

For the BMI, the optimal cut-off point for the identification of metabolic abnormalities was 27.2 kg/m2 for both sexes. For the WC, the optimal cut-off point was of 94 cm for men and 87 cm for women. Prospective studies are needed to identify those indices in which changes in value predict the occurrence of metabolic disorders best.

The Usefulness of Anthropometric Indices to Identify the Risk of Metabolic Syndrome

Despite several papers having been published on the association between adiposity and the risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS), it is still difficult to determine unambiguously which of the indices of nutritional status is the best to identify MetS. The aim of this study was to analyze the ability of six anthropometric indices to identify MetS in the Polish population. The highest odds ratios for the occurrence of MetS, according to International Diabetes Federation (IDF), were noted for the following indices: waist-to-height ratio (WHtR, OR = 24.87) and Clínica Universidad de Navarra-body adiposity estimator (CUN-BAE, OR = 17.47) in men and WHtR (OR = 25.61) and body roundness index (BRI, OR = 16.44) in women. The highest odds ratios for the modified definition of MetS (without waist circumference) were found for the following indices: WHtR (OR = 7.32), BRI (OR = 6.57), and CUN-BAE (OR = 6.12) in women and CUN-BAE (OR = 5.83), WHtR (OR = 5.70), and body mass index (BMI, OR = 5.65) in men (p < 0.001 for all). According to the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analyses conducted for the identification of MetS, defined in accordance with IDF, the largest areas under the curve (AUCs) in men were observed for WHtR and CUN-BAE indices, whereas in women, they were observed for WHtR and BRI. In the analysis carried out for the identification of MetS (according to modified definition, without waist circumference), the AUCs were larger for WHtR and BRI in women, while in men, they were larger for CUN-BAE, BMI, and WHtR. BMI was also characterized by a relatively strong discriminatory power in identifying individuals with MetS. An optimal cut-off point for MetS, in accordance with the conventional definition, for both sexes was the value of BMI = 27.2 kg/m². The weakest predictor of the syndrome was the ABSI (a body shape index) indicator. The most useful anthropometric indicator for the identification of MetS, both in men and in women in the Polish population, was WHtR. The optimal cut-off points for WHtR equaled 0.56 in men and 0.54 in women.

The influence of Body Roundness Index on sensorial block level of spinal anaesthesia for elective caesarean section: an observational study

In this prospective trial, we investigate the effectiveness of maternal Body Roundness Index in predicting the spread of spinal anaesthesia and vasopressor requirement in parturients receiving spinal anaesthesia during the elective caesarean section. We prospectively enrolled 175 parturients. Spinal anaesthesia performed with 10 mg 0.5% hyperbaric bupivacaine at the L3-L4 intervertebral space and the optimal cut-off points of the BRI evaluated as 6.59 by receiver operating characteristic analysis calculating area under the curve. Parturients were divided into two groups with BRI <6.59 and BRI ≥6.59 for analyses. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to test for a relationship between variables and maximum sensory block level and vasopressor requirement. BRI was found as an independent risk factor associated with maximum sensory block level (OR = 1.378, 95% CI: 1.125-1.687, p = 0.002). Hypotension and bradycardia events after spinal anaesthesia was not associated with BRI and other variables. The present study indicates that BRI was a practical tool to predict spinal drug distribution in term parturients undergoing caesarean delivery.Impact statementWhat is already known on this subject? Spinal anaesthesia is a commonly used anaesthetic technique for the caesarean section. However, the spinal drug distribution is highly unpredictable. Anthropometric variables may predict the intrathecal drug distribution in parturients. Body Roundness Index (BRI) captures body circumference regarding height to predict body fat percentage, consider the shape of the human body as an ellipse. An ellipsoid body shape might affect the spread of spinal anaesthesia.What do the results of this study add? Our results show that the BRI was as an independent risk factor associated with maximum sensory block level in term parturients undergoing caesarean delivery.What are the implications of these findings for future clinical practice and/or further research? A future study would present the possibility to design a formula for the exact amount of local anaesthetic to be used in spinal anaesthesia with the aid of maternal BRI.

Relationship between body-roundness index and metabolic syndrome in type 2 diabetes

Background: The present study evaluated the relationship between body-roundness index (BRI) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in type 2 diabetes. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 585 type 2 diabetes in Qinhuangdao. MetS was defined as per the Chinese Diabetes Society. Results: The BRI was strongly associated with the odds of having MetS in both males and females after adjustment for age, history of diabetes, and body-mass index (P<0.05). AUC of the BRI were 0.824 for males and 0.775 for females (P<0.001). The optimal cutoff points for the BRI were 3.85 in males (sensitivity 76.5%, specificity 82.1%) and 4.05 in females (sensitivity 76.4%, specificity 70.3%). Conclusion: The BRI was correlated with MetS and was an effective indicator for the screening of MetS in type 2 diabetes.

Feasibility of anthropometric indices to identify dyslipidemia among adults in Jilin Province: a cross-sectional study

Background

Dyslipidemia and other cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors have a strong association with obesity. Anthropometric indices have been widely used to evaluate obesity in clinical and epidemiological studies. We aim to investigate association between serum lipid levels and different anthropometric indices.

Methods

Our study included 17,554 participants. We mainly investigated area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) curves and optimal operating points (OOPs) between the anthropometric indices and serum lipid levels or categories of abnormal serum lipid indices.

Results

For predicting one/two categories of abnormal serum lipid indices among the anthropometric indices, AUROC value of WC was the highest in men (0.718), and AUROC values of BRI and WHtR were the highest in women (0.700 and 0.700) (all P < 0.001); OOP of WC was 82.450 in men; OOPs of BRI and WHtR were 3.435 and 0.504 in women. For predicting three/more categories of abnormal serum lipid indices among the anthropometric indices, AUROC value of WC was the highest in men (0.806), and AUROC values of BRI and WHtR were the highest in women (0.783 and 0.783) (all P < 0.001); OOP of WC was 84.150 in men; OOPs of BRI and WHtR were 3.926 and 0.529 in women.

Conclusions

WC was a good predictor for one/two or three/more categories of abnormal serum lipid indices in men. However, BRI and WHtR were good predictors for one/two or three/more categories of abnormal serum lipid indices in women. ABSI showed the weakest predictive power.

Sex- and Age-Specific Optimal Anthropometric Indices as Screening Tools for Metabolic Syndrome in Chinese Adults

OBJECTIVES

To compare the predictive ability of six anthropometric indices for identification of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and to determine their optimal cut-off points among Chinese adults.

METHODS

A total of 59,029 participants were enrolled. Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), a body shape index (ABSI), body roundness index (BRI), and conicity index (CI) were measured. Receiver-operating characteristic curves analyses were performed to determine the discriminatory power of these indices for the identification of cardiometabolic risks and diagnosis of MetS. The differences in the area under the curve (AUC) values among the indices were evaluated. The Youden index was used to determine the optimal cut-off points.

RESULTS

WHtR and BRI exhibited the highest AUC values for identifying MetS and most cardiometabolic risk factors in both sexes, whereas ABSI showed the lowest AUC value. The general optimal cut-off points in women were 23.03 kg/m² for BMI, 77.25 cm for WC, 0.490 for WHtR, and 3.179 for BRI; those in men were 24.64 kg/m² for BMI, 87.25 cm for WC, 0.510 for WHtR, and 3.547 for BRI. The AUC values and cut-off points of the indices were also analyzed in each age and BMI category.

CONCLUSIONS

In Chinese adults, WHtR and BRI showed a superior predictive power for MetS in both sexes, which can be used as simple and effective screening tools for cardiometabolic risks and MetS in clinical practice.

Anthropometric Indicators of Adiposity Related to Body Weight and Body Shape as Cardiometabolic Risk Predictors in British Young Adults: Superiority of Waist-to-Height Ratio

Frequently reported poor dietary habits of young adults increase their risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS). Excess adiposity is the most established predictor of MetS, and numerous anthropometric measures have been proposed as proxy indicators of adiposity. We aimed to assess prevalence of MetS in young adult population and to make comparison between weight- and shape-oriented measures of adiposity to identify the best index in association with measured body fat and as a risk predictor for MetS. Healthy males and females aged 18-25 years from the Northwest of England were recruited using convenience sampling (n=550). As part of the assessment of the overall health of young adults, the biochemical variables and adiposity measures BMI, waist circumference (WC), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), new BMI, Body Adiposity Index (BAI), Clinica Universidad de Navarra-Body Adiposity Estimator (CUN-BAE), and A Body Shape Index (ABSI) were assessed. Linear regression analysis was used to investigate the association between the proxy indices of adiposity and measured percentage body fat. The odds ratio with 95% confidence interval was used to investigate the relationship between cardiometabolic (CM) risk factors and proxy measures of adiposity. The discriminatory power of these measures for diagnosis of MetS was investigated using area under the receiver operating characteristic curve. Body weight-related indicators of adiposity, particularly CUN-BAE, had stronger association with measured body fat compared with body shape-related indices. In relation with MetS, body shape-related indices, particularly elevated WC and WHtR, had stronger associations with CM risk compared with body weight-related measures. Amongst all indices, the best predictor for CM risk was WHtR, while ABSI had the weakest correlation with body fat, MetS, and CM risk. Indices directly associated with WC and specifically WHtR had greater diagnostic power in detection of CM risk in young adults.

Comparison of the ability to identify arterial stiffness between two new anthropometric indices and classical obesity indices in Chinese adults

BACKGROUND AND AIMS

The association between anthropometric indices of body composition and arterial stiffness is inconclusive. The objective of this study was to examine the predictive ability of two new obesity indices: a body shape index (ABSI), and a body roundness index (BRI), for the identification of arterial stiffness among Chinese adults, as well as to compare the relative strength of association between the anthropometric indices and arterial stiffness.

METHODS

A total of 10,197 subjects were recruited in this cross-sectional study. We tested the association between anthropometric indices (body mass index [BMI], waist circumference [WC], waist-height-ratio [WHtR], ABSI and BRI) and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (PWV). Receiver operating characteristic curve and area under curve (AUC) were employed to evaluate the predictive value of the anthropometric indices for identification of arterial stiffness.

RESULTS

After adjusting for confounding variables, BRI (linear regression: 0.112; AUC: 0.726; OR: 1.228 for female and linear regression: 0.047; AUC: 0.631; OR: 1.173 for male) exhibited a more powerful predictive ability of arterial stiffness than ABSI (linear regression: 0.110; AUC: 0.674; OR: 1.315 for female and linear regression: 0.058; AUC: 0.610; OR: 1.150 for male) and WC (linear regression: 0.078; AUC: 0.699; logistic regression: negative for female and linear regression: negative; AUC: 0.593; logistic regression: negative for male) while having a similar predictive value to that of WHtR (linear regression: 0.113; AUC: 0.726; OR: 1.228 for female and linear regression: 0.047; AUC: 0.631; OR: 1.185 for male) among both sexes. BMI (linear and logistic regression: negative; AUC: 0.660 for female and 0.568 for male) had the lowest predictive power in both sex categories. The optimal cut-off of WHtR for detecting arterial stiffness was 0.49 in females and 0.53 in males, that of BRI was 3.19 in females and 3.89 in males.

CONCLUSIONS

WHtR, ABSI and BRI were significantly associated with arterial stiffness. BRI and WHtR, rather than ABSI, showed superior predictive abilities for arterial stiffness in both sexes.
