Macroscopic Lattice Boltzmann Method

The lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) is a highly simplified model for fluid flows using a few limited fictitious particles. It has been developed into a very efficient and flexible alternative numerical method in computational physics, demonstrating its great power and potential for resolving more and more challenging physical problems in science and engineering covering a wide range of disciplines such as physics, chemistry, biology, material science and image analysis. The LBM is implemented through the two routine steps of streaming and collision using the three parameters of the lattice size, particle speed and collision operator. A fundamental question is if the two steps are integral to the method or if the three parameters can be reduced to one for a minimal lattice Boltzmann method. In this paper, it is shown that the collision step can be removed and the standard LBM can be reformulated into a simple macroscopic lattice Boltzmann method (MacLAB). This model relies on macroscopic physical variables only and is completely defined by one basic parameter of the lattice size δx, bringing the LBM into a precise “lattice” Boltzmann method. The viscous effect on flows is naturally embedded through the particle speed, making it an ideal automatic simulator for fluid flows. Three additional advantages compared to the existing LBMs are that: (i) physical variables can directly be retained as the boundary conditions; (ii) much less computational memory is required; and (iii) the model is unconditionally stable. The findings are demonstrated and confirmed with numerical tests including flows that are independent of and dependent on fluid viscosity, 2D and 3D cavity flows and an unsteady Taylor–Green vortex flow. This provides an efficient and powerful model for resolving physical problems in various disciplines of science and engineering.

Signalling molecule transport analysis in lacunar-canalicular system

Mechanical loading-induced fluid flow in lacunar-canalicular space (LCS) of bone excites osteocyte cells to release signalling molecules which initiate osteo-activities. Theoretical models considered canaliculi as a uniform and symmetrical space/channel in bone. However, experimental studies reported that canalicular walls are irregular and curvy resulting in inhomogeneous fluid motion which may influence the molecular transport. Therefore, a new mathematical model of LCS with curvy canalicular walls is developed to characterize cantilever bending-induced canalicular flow behaviour in terms of pore-pressure, fluid velocity, and streamlines. The model also analyses the mobility of signalling molecules involved in bone mechanotransduction as a function of loading frequency and permeability of LCS. Inhomogeneous flow is observed at higher loading frequency which amplifies mechanotransduction; nevertheless, it also promotes trapping of signalling molecules. The effects of shape and size of signalling molecules on transport behaviour are also studied. Trivially, signalling molecules larger in size and weight move slower as compared to molecules small in size and weight which validates the findings of the present study. The outcomes will ultimately be useful in designing better biomechanical exercise in combination with pharmaceutical agents to improve the bone health.

Integrative modeling of drug therapy and the bone turnover

BACKGROUND

Denosumab has been successfully used for the postmenopausal osteoporosis treatment. This research is focused on the computational analysis of the effect of denosumab on bone remodeling.

METHODS

Inspired by the advancement in the field of multiscale modeling , this research encompasses on the cellular and molecular bone remodeling key players. The model is designed to cover all the dominant interacting factors and their respective gradients. During this research, we have performed numerical experiments to validate our mathematical model, by interfacing it with the parametric values available in the literature.

FINDINGS

The novelty of our work relies in the fact that we have considered the effect of estrogen, sclerostin and NFATc1 during osteoporosis and their combined effect with the variable effect of denosumab during therapy.

INTERPRETATIONS

From our analysis, we have concluded that denosumab suppresses osteoclast differentiation, that results in reduced bone resorption. These results are in agreement with the experimental findings.

Physics of fractional imaging in biomedicine

The mathematics of imaging is a growing field of research and is evolving rapidly parallel to evolution in the field of imaging. Imaging, which is a sub-field of biomedical engineering, considers novel approaches to visualize biological tissues with the general goal of improving health. "Medical imaging research provides improved diagnostic tools in clinical settings and supports the development of drugs and other therapies. The data acquisition and diagnostic interpretation with minimum error are the important technical aspects of medical imaging. The image quality and resolution are really important in portraying the internal aspects of patient's body. Although there are several user friendly resources for processing image features, such as enhancement, colour manipulation and compression, the development of new processing methods is still worthy of efforts. In this article we aim to present the role of fractional calculus in imaging with the aid of practical examples.
