Sulfur-doped carbon dots synthesis under microwave irradiation as turn-off fluorescent sensor for Cr(III)

In-Brain Multiphoton Imaging of Vaterite Cargoes Loaded with Carbon Dots

Biocompatible fluorescent agents are key contributors to the theranostic paradigm by enabling real-time in vivo imaging. This study explores the optical properties of phenylenediamine carbon dots (CDs) and demonstrates their potential for fluorescence imaging in cells and brain blood vessels. The nonlinear absorption cross-section of the CDs was measured and achieved values near 50 Goeppert-Mayer (GM) units with efficient excitation in the 775-895 nm spectral range. Mesoporous vaterite nanoparticles were loaded with CDs to examine the possibility of a biocompatible imaging platform. Efficient one- and two-photon imaging of the CD-vaterite composites uptaken by diverse cells was demonstrated. For an in vivo scenario, CD-vaterite composites were injected into the bloodstream of a mouse, and their flow was monitored within the blood vessels of the brain through a cranial window. These results show the potential of the platform for high-brightness biocompatible imaging with the potential for both sensing and simultaneous drug delivery.

Pyrimidine-5-carbonitrile derivatives as sprout for CQDs proveniences: Antitumor and anti-inflammatory potentiality

A comparative study is proposed to show the effect of variation in the heteroatoms in the main skeleton of CQDs proveniences, on their affinity for nucleation of CQDs, as anti-inflammatory and anticancer drugs. Heterocyclic-based CQDs sprout was successfully exploited for preparation of three CQDs proveniences, named as; 2-(2,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-4,6-dioxo-6,11-dihydro-4H-pyrimido[2,1-b] quinazoline-3-carbonitrile (compound A), 2-(2,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-4,6-dioxo-4H,6H-benzo[e]pyrimido[2,1-b][1,3]oxazine-3-carbonitrile (compound S) and 2-(2,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-4,6-dioxo-4H,6H-benzo[e]pyrimido[2,1-b][1,3] thiazine-3-carbonitrile (compound T). Chemical formulas of CQDs proveniences & CQDs were verified via FTIR, 1HNMR, 13CNMR & XRD. Particle size of TM-CQDs, A-CQDs, S-CQDs & T-CQDs were estimated to be 3.7 ± 1.4, 4.6 ± 1.6, 5.9 ± 1.6 nm and 3.0 ± 1.3 nm, respectively. All of CQDs proveniences & CQDs were examined for their affinity as anti-inflammatory drugs via Griess assay. CQDs ingrained from TM (TM-CQDs) were detected with the highest NO inhibition% by increasing its concentration from 10 up to 100 μM to be 40 % to 89 %, respectively. Moreover, their anti-tumor performance against MCF-7: breast Adenocarcinoma cell line was approved via sulforhodamine B assay, whereas, IC50 was evaluated for TM-CQDs, A-CQDs, S-CQDs and T-CQDs to be 38.16, 36.09, 100 and 100 μg/ml, respectively.

Poly(ethylene imine)-chitosan carbon dots: study of its physical-chemical properties and biological in vitro performance

Carbon dots (CDs) have been quickly extended for nanomedicine uses because of their multiple applications, such as bioimaging, sensors, and drug delivery. However, the interest in increasing their photoluminescence properties is not always accompanied by cytocompatibility. Thus, a knowledge gap exists regarding their interactions with biological systems linked to the selected formulations and synthesis methods. In this work, we have developed carbon dots (CDs) based on poly (ethylene imine) (PEI) and chitosan (CS) by using microwave irradiation, hydrothermal synthesis, and a combination of both, and further characterized them by physicochemical and biological means. Our results indicate that synthesized CDs have sizes between 1 and 5 nm, a high presence of amine groups on the surface, and increased positive ζ potential values. Further, it is established that the choice and use of different synthesis procedures can contribute to a different answer to the CDs regarding their optical and biological properties. In this regard, PEI-only CDs showed the longest photoluminescent emission lifetime, non-hemolytic activity, and high toxicity against fibroblast. On the other hand, CS-only CDs have higher PL emission, non-cytotoxicity associated with fibroblast, and high hemolytic activity. Interestingly, their combination using the proposed methodologies allow a synergic effect in their CDs properties. Therefore, this work contributes to developing and characterizing CD formulations based on PEI and CS and better understanding the CD's properties and biological interaction.

Synthesis of Doped/Hybrid Carbon Dots and Their Biomedical Application

Carbon dots (CDs) are a novel type of carbon-based nanomaterial that has gained considerable attention for their unique optical properties, including tunable fluorescence, stability against photobleaching and photoblinking, and strong fluorescence, which is attributed to a large number of organic functional groups (amino groups, hydroxyl, ketonic, ester, and carboxyl groups, etc.). In addition, they also demonstrate high stability and electron mobility. This article reviews the topic of doped CDs with organic and inorganic atoms and molecules. Such doping leads to their functionalization to obtain desired physical and chemical properties for biomedical applications. We have mainly highlighted modification techniques, including doping, polymer capping, surface functionalization, nanocomposite and core-shell structures, which are aimed at their applications to the biomedical field, such as bioimaging, bio-sensor applications, neuron tissue engineering, drug delivery and cancer therapy. Finally, we discuss the key challenges to be addressed, the future directions of research, and the possibilities of a complete hybrid format of CD-based materials.
